OBITUARY
Harry August Sostman,
96, of Manchester, died
Friday (April 17, 2009) at
his home.
Harry was
born on July 10, 1912 in
St. Louis, MO, the oldest
son of the late Herman and
Carrie (Bickell) Sostman.
He grew up in the Hill
neighborhood of St. Louis
with the likes of Joe
Garagiola and Yogi Berra
as neighbors. He, too,
played baseball in his
late teens, pitching and
playing third base for a
local St. Louis team. He
was an avid baseball and
hockey fan all of his
life, and had a passion
for coin collecting, which
he shared with his
granddaughter, Mary Alice.
A World War II Veteran,
Harry first served with
Battery A, 239 AA
(Searchlight) Bn, and was
stationed with a
searchlight battalion on
Hillstown Road in
Manchester in 1942. While
serving there, he
contacted Alice Lewis, the
sister of one of his best
friends from St. Louis,
who was then living in New
York City. After a few
dates, they married on a
weekend pass, and she
remained the love of his
life even after her death
in August, 1999.
On his return from the
service, Harry was
employed by Cheney
Brothers in their dye
house, leaving there to go
to work as a driver for H.
J. Heinz in East Hartford
and then to East Hartford
Warehouse as a forklift
operator. He was a
longtime member of
Teamster's Local 559. He
retired in 1972.
A wonderful, gentle,
loving friend, brother,
husband, father, Papa and
Great-Papa, Harry will be
deeply missed by his
children, Harriet Sostman
Abraham and her husband
Jerry of Syracuse, NY,
Ellen Sostman Laramie of
Bolton, Raymond Laramie of
Glastonbury, James R.
Sostman and his wife
Laurrie of Bloomfield, and
his neighbor Audrey
Grande, who was like a
daughter to him.
He greatly loved
and was adored by his nine
grandchildren and their
spouses, Melissa Ongur and
her husband Dost, Sasha
Stein and her husband
Aaron, Hope Hudson and her
husband Steve, Mark
Abraham, Joshua Abraham,
Angela Laramie, Mary Alice
Laramie, Thomas Conroy and
Greg Conroy.
He was extremely proud of
his four great-grand
children, Lily and Henry
Stein and Derin and Dilan
Ongur.
Harry remained close to
and is survived by two
brothers and
sisters-in-law, Jim and
Marilyn Sostman and Bob
and Shirley Sostman, his
sister Mary Gwaltney, his
sister and brother-in-law,
Peggy and Jim LaHaye, his
sister-in-law Imogene

[Jerry
Abraham Note--October
2017:
Hello. We are Jerry
and Harriet Abraham (gen.
29). We have been
finding so much information
in your postings.
Thank you. My wife is
descended from Thomas
Walker and Polly Gwin.
[The Thomas Walker (gen. 24)
pictured on the website (b.
ca. 1857) looks a lot like
Harry Sostman did to his
family, so we were able to
determine they are 1st
cousins, 4 times
removed.] There are
two more generations on our
line to add after gen. 29 in
your lists :) --six in gen
30 and eight (so far) in
gen. 31!
But the
reason I write, other than
to say hello and thank you,
is to ask if you have found
any further data on the
Robert J. Wright
ancestry. We have
reached a dead end as far as
documentation goes. If
you have not, have you found
any sources on that, or on
the Collins Family?
Specifically, although
several of these lines go
back to revolutionary times,
we have been trying to see
if any of these
branches--Walker, Gwin,
Wright, Collins--had any
patriots documented as
daughters or sons of the
American Revolution?
You are
of course welcome to look at
our ancestry site, if you
haven' t already, and if we
can help with any data,
please let us know.
Best regards,
Jerry Abraham, Oct 2017]
Hope
Hudson and her
husband Steve,
Thomas Conroy and
Greg Conroy.

we know that Mary Canterbury Gwin was alive

that James was alive at least as late as

somewhere between ages 0 and 9, making him
somewhere between ages 30 and 39 in 1850,
old enough to have a large family. And
so we keep those possibilities open here.]

Re: Mary "Polly" Walker—Genealogy
Connection
John, Michael, and James:
My name is Nicholas (Nick)
James Adams. I've been doing some work
on exploring my family tree, and while doing
so I stumbled upon your website. As I
was tracing my family history, I think that I
have found substantially more information
about Mary "Polly" Walker, descendant of
Thomas Walker Jr & Polly Gwin, than what
you currently have captured.
Please see the attached
picture from the Oregon Biographical and Other
Index Card files as well as an anecdote that
was captured from the:
Oregon Biographies Project
An Illustrated History of
Central Oregon,
Western Historical
Publishing Company,
Spokane, Washington, 1905,
page 260-261.
They link my dad's
2xgreat-grandma to your ancestors. Since
your website had a lot of missing information
on this connection, I thought that I would
share it with you. I'm happy to provide
the other Census data that I used to make the
link between myself and Mary "Polly" Walker.

I hope that you all find this connection
correct and interesting.

7 Jun 2020—A Biography of Alvin A Thomas
and Mary Jane Quinn
A Biography of Alvin
A. Thomas and Mary Jane Quinn
ALVIN A. THOMAS, deceased.
Among the worthy pioneers
of the great state of Oregon, the name of
Alvin A. Thomas appears well up in the roll of
honor. He was a man of staunch Christian
character and lived the faith that makes
faithful and manifested in his career the
principles of Christianity in everyday life.
He was born in Michigan on
October 6, 1837, the son of Laren L. and Mary
A. (Mathews) Thomas, natives of the eastern
part of the United States. The mother died
when this son was small. The father died in
Marion County, Oregon.
Our subject was educated in
Michigan and Oregon whither he came with his
father, who had married Eliza Spoors.
Settlement was made in Marion County, and they
took a donation claim, where the father
remained until his death. His widow still
resides there. The date of this journey across
the plains was the forties.
Our subject was reared
principally in the Willamette Valley, and
there on April 12, 1860, he married Miss Mary
J. Quinn, the wedding occurring in Clackamas
County. Mrs. Thomas' parents were Joseph and
Polly (Walker) Quinn. They were married in the
east and crossed the plains in 1852. The
father suffered terribly from the cholera, but
survived. The mother was born in Orange
County, Indiana, on November 10, 1822, and
died in Clackamas County, on August 7, 1888.
Mrs. Mary J. Quinn
Thomas was born in Indiana
a
and well remembers the trip across the plains.
After her marriage in Clackamas County, she
and her husband resided there until 4 Jul 1900
when they came east of the mountains, the
Cascade Range, and since then she has resided
with her daughter, Mrs. Sigman. At
Dufur, on March 22, 1904, Mr. Thomas was
called to depart from the scenes of his
earthly labors and enter in to the realities
of the world beyond this wilderness way. He
died as he had lived, a true Christian, and
all knew that a good man had that day been
taken from among them. He was buried with
becoming ceremonies and his remains rest in
the Dufur Cemetery. He had for many years been
a member of the Christian Church as his widow
is now, and they supported the faith with
zeal.
To Mr. and Mrs. Thomas six
children have been born: Margaret E. Thomas,
the wife of Alvin Sigman, who is mentioned
elsewhere in this work; Polly A. Thomas, the
wife of Cyrus Covey, on a farm nearby; Walter
A. Thomas, a teamster at Boyd; Lorenzo M.
Thomas, a farmer near Prineville; Charles K.
Thomas, at Dufur; and William H. Thomas, who
died March 1, 1884, aged eighteen.
Mrs. Thomas' mother bore
sixteen children; she was a woman of whom it
may be said because of her Christian life,
that she was a real "mother in Israel."

Notice that while I was
able to make this change
easily in the

have not been able to
figure out how to change

I have changed all the

Sorry. I hope this
is not too confusing for

OBITUARY
David
Albert Walker passed
away
on Wednesday, September 26, 2012,
at St. Alphonsus Hospital in the
arms of his two children, Jody and
Justin.
David was born on February 15,
1952, in Emmett, Idaho, to Charles
and Pearl Walker as the oldest of
four children. During his early
childhood his family lived
throughout Idaho, Oregon and
Montana. In eighth grade his
family returned to Emmett.
As a teen, Dave worked for Sanders
Farms, ran track, and was a member
of the high school choir. After a
year at Boise State University,
Dave was married and returned to
Oregon to pursue his dreams.
At the age of 20 Dave began his
career for Tektronix, Inc.
He obtained an Honorary Doctorate
from Oregon State
University. Dave was a
Corporate Industrial Engineering
Manager. His successes allowed him
to fulfill his dreams of owning a
boat to fish in and a cabin at the
beach.
He took an early retirement after
20 years with Tektronix. His
passion for boats led him on a new
career path, selling for Bayliner.
David was a single father to his
two children and raised them with
unconditional love and
support. David returned to
Emmett in 1992 and later met his
loving wife, Dorothy, at church.
They were wed in 2002, and he
acquired three stepchildren and
four grandchildren, all of whom he
treated as his own. He
retired from sales in 2008.
His years of retirement were spent
with his wife, mom, children, and
grandchildren, boating, fishing
and camping. Our beloved dad
put all others before
himself. He was
tenderhearted and adored his
family. We all know how much
he loved us, which is the greatest
gift he could have ever left
behind.
Dad was charming, gracious,
generous, and humble. He
loved God, and we are comforted
that we will be together again in
eternity. He was a big guy,
with a contagious smile, a huge
heart and a love for small things,
like his darling camper, the
"marsh mellow". He was truly
adored by his family. He was
a one-in-a-million dad, "Papa",
husband, son, brother and friend.
We are brokenhearted to lose him
unexpectedly and at such a young
age. We will carry on his
legacy of love and loyalty.
David is survived by his wife,
Dorothy; his mother, Pearl Walker;
his two children, Jody (Kelly)
Scott, and Justin (Amber) Walker;
stepchildren, Shawn, Angelina, and
Forrest; grandchildren, Jack
Burke, Cody Scott, Kaden, and
Logan Walker, Aubrey and Mathew
Williams, Allyson and Amanda Nida;
siblings, Coleen Matuska, Carl and
Darrell Walker; and many nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
father, Charles Edward Walker, and
his best friends and cousins,
Allen and Brad Walker.
A celebration of life will be held
October 14 at 2:30 p.m. at Wild
Rose Park in Emmett, Idaho.

Walker, and their children.]

birth as being unk., the photo of the
gravestone shows that it was once
broken off (the exposed stub still
shows), probably by vandals, then
later reinserted into the ground, the
bottom portion of the stone being
hidden in the ground. Nevertheless,
the words "DIED July 27, 1862, AGED
17..." do show, and it is assumed that
if the photographer had scraped away a
little of the dirt, one could have
seen James Farris' entire age in
years, months, and days, as was common
in the day. That he was 17,
however, places his DOB at about 1845,
the same as our James, so I believe this is
the grave of our cousin, son of
Mahala Walker Farris Chandler, and
grandson of Thomas and Polly Gwin
Walker. No other
Farris surnames are listed as being
buried in that cemetery.]

Ancestry.com lists a Nancy
E. Farris as having
married on 12 Feb 1873 in
Dubois, Dubois Co., IN, to Samuel
P. McCain. While
we have no proof yet that this
is our Nancy, Dubois County is
immediately south of Martin
and west of Orange, so the
geography fits. And if
she is ours, her age at this
marriage would have been about
23, so that fits as well.]

Minerva was alive at least as late as 1850.]
[John M. Gwin Note:
This leaves a discrepancy with the DOB of
24.06 Anderson Walker, above, b.
<1832>; therefore, perhaps the birth
order is wrong or he is a different Anderson
Walker.]
[Mike Walker Note: John and Jim, I noted the
discrepancy in birth order, too. I think the
census records support a birth date of about
1833. In the 1850 census she reported a
birthdate of abt 1833 (age 17 in 1850 Martin
Co., Rutherford Twp., IN). She and John
already have a one-year-old child, Eliza. According to my cousin Pam
Green (I think that is where the 1825 date
came from) there is a marriage
certificate for Manerva Walker and John
Williams Simmons as follows:
Married: 10 Dec 1846 in
Martin Co., IN -- Marriage
License: 12 Oct 1846 in Martin Co., IN.
This would make her 13
years old at the date of marriage. If she
was born after Anderson (say 1834) she would
only have been 12 in 1846. My conclusion is
that cousin Pam is wrong and the census is
right. (I guess she could have married at
age 13, though! I hope not.)]

Because
of the dates of birth being several
years off, I'm not quite convinced
yet that the family of this George
H. Davidson from the 1880-1930
censuses, below, is ours, so I'm
listing them in the following format
for now to see if there are any
clues in later years (and no, I
didn't find any--still doesn't mean
that they are not the same family as
ours, though).

[Mary Ann
Ables Walker is NOT listed as
lvg w/William H. Walker in the
22 July 1870 census of
Shoals, Martin Co., IN;
therefore, I have also looked
for them, so far, in the
censuses of the remainder of
Shoals Town, Loogootee Town,
Center Twp., Lost River Twp.,
and Halbert Twp., as those are
the closest residential areas to
the Town of Shoals where Houston
was living and working. I
have not yet searched for her
and the girls in the other twps.
of Martin Co.]

[John M. Gwin
Note: "Huston" is named in
the probate of Isham Gwin's will. We
know that the probate occurred after his
wife's (Mary Canterbury Gwin's) death, and
we know that Mary Canterbury Gwin was alive
in the 1850 census.
I think this means that Huston was alive at
least as late as 1850.
SURE ENOUGH! Today, 31 Mar 2016, we
found him in the same 1860
census as (and just across town from) his
dad and stepmom--see 1860
census references immediately above.]
[John M. Gwin Note--6 Aug
2020: In
looking for the 1860 location of Halbert's
Bluff Post Office in Martin County,
Indiana, I found the page for Indiana
"Early Postmasters" at http://ingenweb.org/inmartin/postmasters.htm
from which I took the following two
excerpts:
1. "This
is a listing of early towns, their
dates of establishment, and the names
of their postmasters. The information,
from History
of Martin County, Indiana, Volume
II by
Harry Q. Holt, is used with the
permission of the family."
2. "Halbert's Bluff:
Name changed from Pleasant
Valley to Halbert's Bluff July 6,
1857. Name changed to Shoals, November
9, 1868."
So the closest post office
to the family home of Houston Walker in
1860 was today's Shoals,
located in today's Halbert Township.
Therefore, we assume that Houston and Mary
Walker and their family lived there in
1870. But when I found William H.
Walker, age 40, living alone and working
in a factory in 1870 Shoals, I theorized
that possibly all three had died during
the decade or that they had stayed on the
family farm while Houston worked in the
town during the week. And so I began
searching the 1860 census of the towns and
townships closest to Shoals for Mary Ann,
Nancy E., and Mary J. Walker. So far
that search has included the rest of the
town of Shoals, all of the town of
Loogootee, and all the rest of the
townships of Halbert, Center, and Lost
River. And while I've found several
other Walker and Ables families, I have
not yet seen our Walkers.]
[John M. Gwin
Note--6 Aug 2020: Here's
another early post office in Martin
County. It's listed in the 29 Aug
1870 census as being located in BAKER
Twp., which no longer exists.
"Mountain
Spring - Josiah Pierce;
Established September 16, 1850.
Discontinued November 18, 1879.
Re-established December 11,
1879 with Joseph S. Ikard first
postmaster. Discontinued March 15,
1905."]
