grandfather, Isom Gwin (wife Mary Canterberry)
was a Baptist preacher in E. Tennessee and

(Elizabeth's great-granddaughter's) Note: Elizabeth
Lincoln Denton was the daughter of Josiah
Lincoln and Catherine Barlow. Josiah Lincoln was
the brother of Thomas Lincoln father to
President Abrahm Lincoln. President Lincoln is
quoted in a remark about Josiah, "He removed
early in life to Harrison Co., in southern IN,
the 2nd county east of that in which his brother
Thomas afterwards settled and there died.
According to Abraham Lincoln, writing 4-2-1848,
"My recollection of what I have heard is that he
has several daughters, and only one son,
Thomas--their post office is Corydon, Harrison
Co., IN." Writing later that year, he
stated that "Uncle Josiah had three daughters
and an only son, Thomas." From

Barbara Denton,
b. 1827 (Daughter of Isom and Elizabeth
Lincoln Denton
of Harrison CO, IN--Elizabeth was a first cousin to President Abraham Lincoln) Barbara Denton was born in Indiana January 1827. Died in Cedar County Mo. December 16th 1907. Aged 80 years. 10 months. 19 days, Was married to Joseph Barkley in November 1843. And to this union were born 12 children. 10 boys and 2 girls. Five children have gone on before. There is left to mourn the death of a mother five sons and two daughters. The sons were all at her bed side when she died, but the girls could not be present. Besides the children there are 28 grand-children and 13 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. She was converted in early life and joined the Methodist church and has lived a consistent Christian life. Her remains were laid to rest in the Lindley Prairie Cemetery. Besides her husband there to await the resurrection of the Just. Funeral was conducted by the writer. Scripture lesson Matthew 28. with first Cor. XV. 4758. Text St John. XI latter clause 2nd verse. The 1900 Federal Census for Madison, Missouri (Cedar County) (Bear Creek Post Office) shows Francis M. Barkley, a widower age 50, born January 1850 in Missouri. Living with him were his children: Benjamin Barkley, age 18, born October 1881; Louis Barkley, age 15, born September 1884; Sarah Barkley, age 11, born August 1888; and Nora Barkley, age 9, born August 1890; all born in Missouri. She was born Saturday, September 17, 1923, in Bryan County to Angus M. and Leona Frances (Annai) Giles. She married Charlie F. Barkley September 1938 in Denison, Texas. She was a member of the Colbert First Baptist Church. She was retired from the Pillsbury Company, a former member of the Eastern Star, enjoyed playing the piano and arranging flowers, and was very artistic. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and other brothers and sisters. She is survived by her brother Bill Giles, Colbert, and sisters Fern Bush, Denison, Texas; Lorene Garvin, Elmore City, Oklahoma; Louise Hannan, Colbert; Joann Korbelic, Wylie, Texas; and Donella Baecht, Savoy, Texas. Last night I found Wilford
Denton's Civil War records. His middle initial
was 'H' and he served in Company F of the Indiana
59th Infantry. I'm not sure if he left before
or after Thomas (although Thomas was pretty late
into the war). Their father Isom may be the
same Isom Denton listed in the records of the
Indiana 144th Infantry, Company E. If so, Isom
joined his unit on 2 June 1865, several months after
Thomas passed away.
I was able to find a list of where Thomas' regiment
was throughout the war. Apparently Thomas died
the day before the Battle of Franklin.
Nashville National Cemetery was first started as a
place to bury casualties from the Battle of Franklin
and from the various hospitals around the area.]

Lizzie was
the only child of Thomas J. Denton (1845-1864)
and Mahala Floyd (b. 1849) and was named after
her two grandmothers, Fannie
Boston and Elizabeth
Lincoln. Elizabeth was the
daughter of Josiah
Lincoln and first cousin to Pres.
Abraham Lincoln.
Lizzie's parents were married on January 28, 1864 in Harrison County, Indiana. Shortly after that, Thomas, perhaps inspired by his older brother Wilford, joined the 9th Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Company E to fight for the Union. On November 29, 1864, he died of malaria just outside of Nashville, TN. Lizzie was born the following January. On November 1, 1866, Mahala married Thomas' older brother, David Franklin Denton. They never had any children together, but David raised Lizzie as his own in Depauw, IN. |
Danny was the youngest son of John Henry Stonecipher and Catharine Rosenbarger. He was named after his maternal grandfather, Erasmus "Asa" Rosenbarger. Danny grew up with three older brothers and an older half sister. Their names were: Rachel Ann Herbaugh (1846-1931); Philip Stonecipher (1850-1918); William Henry Stonecipher (1853-1920); and Emanuel W. Stonecipher (1855-?). Danny and all of his siblings spent their lives in Harrison Co., IN, in the area around Depauw and Milltown. The only exception was William Henry, who moved to Pikes County to become a dentist. The rest of the brothers were all farmers. He then set to work building a home for his family in Depauw, Indiana, which was probably completed around 1885. They had two barns, with horses, cows, pigs, and chickens, and plenty of forest to hunt in. Danny is said to have been a very pleasant man who was always joking with his grandchildren. He was on the short side, and somewhat old fashioned. For example, even when it was out of style, he continued to eat with a knife instead of a spoon. Danny and Lizzie were parents to five children: Cort Franklin (1885-1976); an unnamed baby girl (1888); Sophie (1891-1893); Hala Alice (1893-1928); and Edgar Reader (1897-1970). In 1928, Hala died giving birth to her third child. Three years later, Lizzie had a heart attack while walking from the barn to the house and passed away. Danny was the only one left. Danny and Lizzie's youngest son, Edgar, had three children of his own, a boy and two girls. They lived in a cabin on top of a hill in Depauw and could see their grandfather's house from their own. Every night, Danny, who had no electricity or running water, would light an oil lamp downstairs, and by this sign the children knew that their grandfather was safe. One night, Danny rearranged his furniture so that the light no longer shone through the window. The girls and their friend Norma Saunders walked all the way to his house. When they reached the yard, sneaking through the darkness, they heard him singing a hymn. Satisfied, they went home without letting him know they were there. Danny grew sick, possibly with pneumonia, in 1943. He went to live with his nephew Jim in town and died there at the ripe old age of 85. His son Edgar inherited the farm. |

Edgar was the youngest child of Danny Stonecipher and Lizzie Denton. He grew up in the house his parents built, in Depauw Indiana. He had two siblings that he knew: his brother Cort (1885-1976), and his sister Hala (1893-1928). On March 4, 1919, in Corydon, Indiana, Edgar married Annie Taylor, daughter of Henry Taylor and Emma Deweese. They had three children together, Jesse Evan (1919-1969), Emily Elizabeth (b. 1924), and Anna Mae (b. 1927). Some time around 1925, the family moved to Delavan, Tazewell, Illinois. They were not alone. Annie's parents, brothers, and her aunts and uncles on both sides of the family had already relocated to Delavan. They all worked as farmers there. Eventually, Edgar and Annie moved back to Indiana with their daughters, where they lived in the little cabin that Annie grew up in, on top of a hill in Depauw. They had a big garden, and raised chickens. After his father Danny died in 1943, Edgar and Annie moved into the farmhouse that Danny and Lizzie had built. They lived a simple life, with no electricity or running water. In all, they were blessed with 20 grandchildren, who often visited them at their home. Edgar smoked all his life, and eventually developed emphysema. He lived to be 72 years old. Obituary:

Hospital, at the age of 72 years.
A lifelong resident of the Milltown community, he was a son of the late Daniel and Fannie Elizabeth Denton Stonecipher. At an early age, he united with the Christian Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna Taylor Stonecipher; two daughters Mrs. Joe (Emily) Thompson..., Mrs. J. W. (Anna Mae) Ransdell...; a brother, Cort Stonecipher, Jeffersonville; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews. A son, Evan, preceded him in death one year ago. Funeral services were held Friday, May 15 at Newkirk Funeral Home in Milltown. Bro. Jack Oliver officiated. Burial was in Milltown Cemetery. |

Stonecipher. JoAnn was a 1960 graduate of East
Aurora High School. She was a member of the
United Food and Commercial Workers International
Union Local 189 for 20 years. JoAnn was in her
twentieth year of employment at Jewel Food
Stores when her illness resulted in a disability
leave in 1988. She was a member of the Fourth
Street United Methodist Church of Aurora.
Survivors include her son, David R. Barbara was a graduate of East Aurora High School class of 1966. She worked at Dopaco in St. Charles for 13+ years. Barbara enjoyed swimming with her grandchildren. She loved her pets and enjoyed her plants and gardens. Survivors include her children, Angela (Brent Freeman) Tigrett, Jodeen (Mickey) Tigrett-Hanks and Terry (Kim Klingel) Tigrett, Jr.; her grandchildren, Ryan Freeman, Jake Klingel, Private Myranda Hanks US Army, Madison Tigrett, Samantha Klingel and Tristan Tigrett; her siblings, Shirley Stallmann, Jesse (Linda) Stonecipher, Beverly (Ray) Gonzalez, Bill (Mary) Stonecipher and Pat Stonecipher; many nieces and nephews. I thought you might be interested in some updates on the Isom Denton family. It turns out that Isom's son 25.09--Thomas J. Denton (b. 1845) married Mahala A. Floyd (daughter of Alexander Floyd and Frances Boston) on January 28, 1864, in Harrison County, IN. Then Thomas joined the Civil War, serving in the 9th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry, Co. E, as a private. On November 29, 1864, he died of malaria in Tennessee (only age 19) and was buried in Nashville National Cemetery. Mahala, pregnant, applied for widow's pension. She was only 16, so her father Alex signed as her guardian. My great-great-grandmother Lizzie, daughter of Thomas and Mahala, was born on January 12, 1865 in Depauw, Harrison, IN. Then on November 1, 1866, Thomas' older brother David Franklin Denton married Mahala in Harrison County. They never had any children together, so David has no blood descendants. Still don't know where David and Mahala are buried, but I did find Thomas and David's brother, Wilford Denton, in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Depauw (at least, I assume it's him--don't know of any other Wilford Dentons born around 1842 who lived in Depauw). The dates on the stone were 25 April 1842 - 8 July 1888. And of course that birth date would apply to his twin, James. Another thing you could add is that the Mary Floyd who married to William Denton was actually Mary Eliza Floyd, Mahala's younger sister. So Mary's parents are also Alexander Floyd (1814-1880) and Frances Boston (1815-1869), and her own dates are 1853-1886. Last night I found Wilford Denton's Civil War records. His middle initial was 'H', and he served in Company F of the Indiana 59th Infantry. I'm not sure if he left before or after Thomas (although Thomas was pretty late into the war). Their father Isom may be the same Isom Denton listed in the records of the Indiana 144th Inf., Co. E. If so, Isom joined his unit on 2 June 1865, several months after Thomas passed away. I was able to find a list of where Thomas' regiment was throughout the war. Apparently Thomas died the day before the Battle of Franklin. Nashville National Cemetery was first started as a place to bury casualties from the Battle of Franklin and from the various hospitals around the area. What I am curious about is how many of the Denton brothers fought in the Civil War? According to Find A Grave, Isom joined, even though he was 53, and being Pres. the youngest daughter of Danny and Lizzie
Stonecipher, and the only one to live to
adulthood. She grew up on her parents' farm
in Depauw, Indiana, and had two brothers:
Cort, who was eight years older than her,
and Edgar,
who was four years younger.
Hala was named after her maternal grandmother, Mahala A. Floyd. Her middle name, Alice, may have also come from her grandmother. Hala attended Malwell College in Milltown, Harrison Co., IN. When she was in her late teens, she moved away from home to work at a restaurant in New Albany. Here is a postcard she wrote to her parents during that time (grammar corrected): May 15, 1913 Dear Mama and Papa, This is Hala in the dining room. Looks like one forsaken. They are not very good --. moved to Louisville, KY, and had three
children: Eugene (nicknamed "Stump"),

few days afterwards.
Hala's mother Lizzie died three years later, in 1931. Hala is buried next to her brother Edgar in Milltown Cem., with her parents up the hill from them. OBITUARY
Alliene Mae Wetzel, 80, Depauw, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at Indian Creek Health & Rehab Center in Corydon. Born Dec. 16, 1927, at Hancock Chapel, she was the daughter of the late Thomas E. and Pearl I. Vance McCutcheon. She was a self-employed beautician, a homemaker and a member of Hancock Chapel United Methodist Church. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylord L. Wetzel, and a brother, Marvin W. McCutcheon. Survivors include a daughter, Wanda M. Wiseman of Ramsey; three sons, Leroy G. and Carlton R. Wetzel, both of Ramsey, and Rowland D. Wetzel of Depauw; a sister, Ardella Dodge of Depauw; a brother, Harold L. McCutcheon of Corydon; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation: Monday, Nov. 24, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 25, after 8 a.m. at Swarens Funeral Home in Ramsey.
