1. Much of the following information is from a copy of excerpts from the book The "Connection" in East Tennessee by Olga Jones Edwards and Izora Waters Frizzell, which copy was sent to me in December 1999 by Cousin Edith Walker, my newly-discovered cousin from Georgia. I now own a copy of this book myself.
On this page
and the "Magill" page, the code "TCIET" refers to this book.
For example, TCIET#432 is the book's reference
number for John Walker, Sr.
2. Today, 15 Mar 2003, I found in my WALKER files a printout entitled "Descendants of John Walker, Sr." that I must have copied from someone's online Genealogy page. I'm sorry I cannot now give you the source of this information, but I share it with you here in hopes that someone may recognize it and identify the owner. All material from this source appears below in this italicized green text, and all of it should be taken as unproven.
3. The sources for John and Jane Walker Gwin's information may be found on their page.
4. Cousin Alice Foster-Blevins is the
source for the details in this orange
color of the descendants of 23.07(2) Rebecca
"Becca" Walker and Elijah "Lige" Hatcher, below.

Cousin-once-removed Rhonda
E. Harrill Jones has provided an extensive
insight into her own line descending from John Walker I
of Wigton, Scotland, through William Marion Walker.
Her notes are included throughout in these
green-background boxes.

We start with Generation
18: John Walker I of Scotland who married Jane McKnight,
according to Cousin Rhonda. His children, then,
are Generation 19; his grandchildren are Generation 20;
and so on. I, his 8g-grandson, am in Generation
28. My own grandchildren, Gen. 30, are his
10g-grandkids!

Scotland; m. Jane McKnight.
|
21.05--John Walker, Sr., b. WFT est. 1713-1744 in what was then Greene Co., NC--after 1796 was/is Greene Co., TN; d. 1796, Greene Co., TN; m. Mary Anderson; TCIET#432; five ch.;
John Walker, Sr., lived and died in Greene Co., NC (since 1796, TN), at his home on Meadow Creek. (Descendants often refer to him as "MCJW"--Meadow Creek John Walker.) His will, written on Feb. 18, 1796, was probated later that year. Except for the information it contains, we know almost nothing about John Walker. A Joseph Walker who married into the Magill family (just as John's children did) witnessed his will and may have been his brother, as he did not have a son Joseph. A close association also seems to have existed between John Walker and Charles Kilgore, Sr., who was one of the executors. [John M. Gwin Note: This Charles Kilgore is perhaps the brother of Martha Kilgore who married this Daniel Walker on 26 May 1788. Perhaps Charles married one of the senior John Walker's daughters and is thereby his son-in-law. IF THIS IS THE CASE, then any descendants of Daniel and Charles would be double cousins.]
John Walker, Sr., received two land grants for a total of 275 acres on Meadow Creek. Grant 459 is recorded in Book 2 page 30, the other in Book B p. 259. Both were granted 20 Sep 1787. On 1 Nov 1786, a John Walker received two grants for 500 acres on the French Broad, but these may have been to another John Walker.
Mary, the widow of John Walker, outlived her husband by seven years, as her estate was settled on 28 Jan 1803. Apparently she made her home with her son Anderson after her husband's death, as Anderson was in charge of her financial affairs when she died. A copy of the settlement follows:
Anderson Walker exhibits in
court an Inventory of the Estate of Mary Walker, deceased,
in the following to wit: "a just and full inventory of all
debts goods and chattles belonging to the estate of Mary Walker of
Greene Co., Tenn., deceased, as came to the knowlege of the
subscribed administrator of the said Estate as follows:"
John Walker's will is interesting and
factual. Some punctuation has been added some spelling
changed. Part of the preamble is omitted.
JOHN WALKER'S WILL--FEB. 18, 1796 In the name of God Amen. I, John Walker Senr., of Green County and State of Tenn. being disordered in body but not in mind, do make my last will and testament; item, my beloved wife Mary Walker should have the negro wench and her child Phebe, one horse, jack, saddle and bridle and one bed and furniture and what she thinks she needs. And likewise it is my will that whoever of my children's hands the young wench Phebe shall fall into, that she should be free at twenty-five years of age and to keep her and pay her for her work and not to let her run through the country. Item, it is my will that my sons JOHN, THOMAS, ANDERSON, and DANIEL WALKER and MICHAL BLEW, my son in law, should have equal part of all my movables. Item, it is my will that my negro man Charles should choose which of my sons he will have for his master and whatever he is appraised to, for his master to pay all the rest their part of praisement. Land divided between my sons Anderson and Daniel Walker. My son Daniel Walker and Charles Kilgore should be my executors of this my last will and Testament. I revoke and disclaim and disannul all other wills. This is my last will. To witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this Eighteenth Day of February 1796. John Walker (his mark) Signed, sealed, and delivered in the presence of James Brown Senr. Jurat, John Walker Jurat, Joseph Walker Jurat. |

------------------------------------------------------------------------
It states that John Walker of Tuckleechee Cove was a member of the Friends (Quakers). This may--or may not--have to do with the reason that Isham Gwin did not name John Gwin in his will. We know that Isham was a Baptist preacher (with quite a temper, we understand!) who was sent/released from the Wear Valley Baptist Church (along with his wife and son William) to pastor/preach at the church in Tuckaleechee Cove. We assume this is where John met Jane Walker, whom he married on 8 Apr 1812 (John and Jane are my ggg-grandparents). We also assume that if this marriage had the blessing of Isham and Mary, that Isham would have married them. But as it was, they were married by Joseph Walker--Jane's brother and a Justice of the Peace! Furthermore, John would have left soon afterward to fight with Andy Jackson in the Indian Wars in Alabama, and as Friends/Quakers were pacifists, this may not have set well with Jane's parents (that is, if Thomas and Elizabeth were also Friends/Quakers). So perhaps John and Jane moved to Alabama in order to physically separate from BOTH their parents. (The abovementioned son William, who married Susanna Beard and also moved to Alabama, is also missing from Isham's will; he shows up in Alabama also, so perhaps he, too, was intentionally left out of the inheritance because he sided with John.) Regardless, we know that Isham and the rest of his family moved to Indiana where Isham and Mary both died and are buried.
In 2005: and now we may have the rest of the story. The biography of one of Isham's Indiana grandsons tells of Isham's growing hatred of slavery and how he freed his own slaves and left Tennessee with others of his family and neighborhood to move to the free state of Indiana in order to be away from this evil. Meanwhile, sons William and John (and perhaps Chesley as well) moved to Alabama in disagreement with their father. The earliest settlers [ie. of Blount Co., TN] were mainly Scotch Presbyterians, and the first churches were organized by them. In 1786 Eusebia Church was organized in the McTEER neighborhood, it is thought by Hezekiah BALCH. A large log building was erected, and later a camp-ground was constructed near by. In 1792 or 1793 New Providence Church was organized in the vicinity of CRAIG's fort, now Maryville, by Rev. Gideon BLACKBURN, who also established Baker's Creek Church soon after. In 1796 the nucleus of a colony of Friends was formed near where Friendsville now is, by John HACKNEY, James MATTHEWS, James ALLEN and John WALKER. The next year William GRIFFITH located in the vicinity of Unitia, and Thomas JONES and William and Daniel DURHAM on Cloyd's Creek. The land in the vicinity of Louisville was obtained by Robert, John and James GILLESPIE under the act of the Legislature to promote the erection of iron works. They built a small furnace and forge, which they ceased to operate as soon as they obtained a title to the land. The erection of small tub mills was begun with the earliest settlement of the county. The first is said to have been built near McTEER's fort. After the organization of the county, in 1795 and 1796, permits to erect mills were granted to the following persons: John CRAIG, on Pistol Creek; John WALKER, in Tuckaleechee Cove; Samuel THOMPSON, on Crooked Creek; Thomas GIBSON, on Gallaher's Creek, and James McNUTT, on Pistol Creek.
The raising of cotton being an important industry in the early history of the county, a large number of cotton-gins were erected. Those in operation in 1802 were owned by Thomas BERRY, James SCOTT, Samuel HOUSTON, William STANFIELD, William LOWRY and Patrick COLLINS.

the firelight. He herded droves of horses loose over
the mountains to the plantation market in Alabama.

nine bushels of wheat. This he could carry full on his

[John
M. Gwin Note: From the DOB and POB of Otis
and Stella, we get pieces of Joseph's and Virginia's
story: for some reason between 1900 (after Otis was born)
and 1903 (when Stella was born), this family struck out
for Indian Territory. We don't yet know why they
moved or where in Oklahoma they lived, but they lived
there for at most ten years, and then, for whatever
reason, they returned before the 1910 census to the place
from which they'd left.]

[Edith
Walker NOTE: Some additional info--I
found Jane's sister Margaret was married to Eli
Tipton, and their first six children were born in
TN. But the
seventh was born in Alabama ca. 1831. That leads me
to believe that they may have followed Peggy's
sister Jane and husband John Gwin (23.05 above) to
Alabama.
Margaret and Eli moved on to Mississippi, then on to
Polk Co., TX. In 1860 they were in Walker Co., TX.];

Dear John:
Thanks for your message. I printed off the Walker information you
suggested. I am especially interested in:
4.2 Jim Walker who m. Polly Lambert. Do you know anything further about him? (He was under 3.1 Capt. William Bill Walker)
4.1 James Walker who moved to AL. (under James Magill Walker). Could he have possibly moved to AR instead of AL?
My maternal line is Bell, and there were lots of Bells in Madison and Dallas Co. AL.
While searching in Madison Co. AL in 1810-1820 I ran across the name of Gwin and Walker several times.
My James Gilmore Walker recorded on census reports that he was b. in TN. That doesn't mean he didn't go to AL before going to AR. I have been unable to determine where he was m. even though his first child ws b. in 1841 in AR. He must have been m. in 1840 but I cannot find where he is in the census. He doesn't appear to be in AR unless he was living in the HHold with his father at that time and, of course, children aren't listed by name in 1840.
Thank you for leading me to this info. I will keep trying to make the connections. Do you have any Arkansas connections?

Children:Thomas WALKER (Dev'lin' Tom), got his nickname because he was always teasing people. Tom Walker and wife, Eliza Jane MYERS, owned several acres of land along the foot of Cove Mountain in Wear's Valley, Sevier County, TN. With a homesite in the vicinity of what is now known as Cove Mont, he raised a family there, and as each of his sons married, he would build that son a house nearby on his land. After his wife, Eliza, died, he married Eva Rosanna MAPLES KING (widow of Lewis KING) on 3 April 1879 (five days after Eliza died). They had no children. Thomas and Eliza WALKER are both buried in Mattox cemetery, Sevier County, TN.1. John WALKER, Jr. married Rebecca MAGILL 22 May 1788 in Greene County, TN

[John M. Gwin NOTE: But contrary to Cousin Alice Foster-Blevins' report here regarding child no. 9, Tom WALKER, another Walker descendant, Cousin Michael Shelby Walker, who claims DNA-proven descent from Thomas WALKER and Elizabeth MAGILL WALKER through this Thomas Walker, Jr., says that the latter married Polly Gwin, oldest sister of John (above, who married Jane). On another note, John Gwin (see no. 6 above) did have a sister, Sarah Gwin (see no. 4 above), born 1806, but she married in 1824 at age 18 in Harrison Co., IN, to William M. Huston after moving from the Wear Valley to Indiana with her parents, Isham and Mary Ann Canterbury Gwin, as proven by the probate record of the will of Isham and by the Marriage Records for Indiana, Bk. 2, p. 72, according to Cousin Doris Gyarmati. I suppose that Sarah Gwin Huston could have been the widow of Joseph Walker prior to moving and that she could then have been the same as the Sarah Guinn listed above; however, she'd have to have married Joe Walker when she was 12-14--very young indeed!]
http://www.sevierlibrary.org/genealogy/indians/cherokee.htmSEVIER COUNTY SETTLERS VERSUS CHEROKEE INDIANS
By J. A. Sharp c.1952
No settlers on the Tennessee frontier suffered more from Indian attacks than those who settled in the country South of the French Broad river, of which the present Sevier County was a part. When the first settlers crossed this river and staked out land claims in the Boyd's Creek valley about 1783, the Cherokee Indians had not relinquished their rights to the land. Therefore, the first residents of Sevier County were merely "squatters" on lands to which they had no titles.
Small wonder then that early Sevier County gave strong support to the newly formed State of Franklin, which created the County in March, 1785, and whose governor, John Sevier, in June, 1785, made a treaty with the Cherokee that permitted white settlements here. This treaty was negotiated on Sevier County soil at Henry's Station, "North of the River," near the mouth of Dumplin Creek, in the present Kodak section.
However, the majority faction of the Cherokee, not present at the signing of the Treaty of Dumplin, soon repudiated the agreement and were upheld by the Confederation Congress in the Treaty of Hopewell, signed with the Cherokee in November, 1785. The latter treaty did not permit white settlement south of a line in the region of Greeneville, and all settlers in the present Sevier and Blount counties and part of Knox County were ordered to leave within six months. Also, the Indians were authorized to drive them out if they did not move. Needless to say, they did not move, and more people continued to cross the French Broad and settle here.
Throughout its brief existence the State of Franklin continued its efforts to extinguish the Cherokee claim to Sevier County. And in 1786 Colonel Samuel Wear, perhaps Sevier County's most prominent early citizen, was one of the Franklin agents that negotiated with the Cherokee the Treaty of Coyattee that confirmed the Treaty of Dumplin and extended the area for white settlement as far south as the Little Tennessee river, where the main "Overhill" Cherokee towns were located.
After the downfall of the State of Franklin in 1788, support of the separatist movement was confined largely to Sevier County, or the country South of the French Broad. The people here realized that only the Franklin government recognized their land titles and that both North Carolina and the Confederation government supported the Cherokee claim. This led to the formation of a "Lesser Franklin" government, with “Articles of Association" similar to the earlier Watauga Association. In 1789 these "Articles" were adopted at Newell's Station, the county seat of Sevier County after the Franklin government, and which served as the seat of government for the wider area of "Lesser Franklin" on all the settled country South of the French Broad .
The "Lesser Franklin" government ended in 1791 when Governor William Blount of the newly formed Southwest Territory met the Cherokee chieftains on the site of the future Knoxville and signed with them the Treaty of Holston. The Indians now acknowledged the authority of the United States government and ceded to the United States all of their lands south of the French Broad, almost as far as the Little Tennessee River.
Despite the above sessions of their lands South of French Broad to the Franklin government and the Southwest Territory, the Cherokee continued their raids on the frontier settlers of Sevier County from the first settlement in 1783 until the end of the century. The Indians had little understanding of treaties, contracts, or deeds. Too, lacking any central government, the signatures or marks of a few head warriors did not obligate other chieftains who failed to sign the treaties. Least of all did such agreements constrain young and restless braves, who saw themselves rapidly being dispossessed of a rich heritage by a more energetic race.
Tennessee's second historian, Dr. J. G. M. Ramsey, has described these Indian perils and dangers faced by the pioneer settlers in the South of French Broad area in the following apt words:
“Could a diagram be drawn, accurately designating every spot signalized by an Indian massacre, surprise cur depredation, or courageous attack, defense, pursuit or victory by the whites, or station, or fort, or battlefield, or personal encounter, the whole of that section of country would be studded over by delineations of such incidents. Every spring, every fort, every oath, every farm, every trail, every house, nearly, in its first settlement, was once the scene of danger, exposure, attack, exploit, achievement, death."For several years innumerable accounts of such Indian atrocities on the Tennessee frontier filled the pages of the Knoxville Gazette, Tennessee’s first newspaper, which started publication in 1791. Thus we are furnished with the best contemporary record of Indian depredations, and the Sevier County Indian stories recounted here were taken from the files of this old newspaper. One of the first of such stories, the murder of the Richardson family, for whom Richardson's Cove was named, appeared in the Gazette of December 29, 1792. This fall story is quoted as follows:
"On Saturday the 22nd instant, a party of Indians went to the home of Mr. Richardson, . . . on Little Pigeon, twenty-five miles from this place, and killed Mrs. Richardson, Mrs. Foster, Miss Schult and two children with tomahawks and a war club, the latter of which they left in the house and went off. It appears that they had laid in wait, upon a hill which overlooked Richardson 's door, many hours and took the opportunity of his absence, of only half an hour to massacre his family.A similar story, appearing in the Gazette of March 23, 1793 , is quoted:On the next day, John Barkim, in the same neighborhood, in search of his horses, saw two Indians attempting to catch them; on which he fired upon one who dropped his arms, but it is feared it did not kill him."
"On Saturday the 9th instant, James Nelson and Thompson Nelson (brothers) were killed and scalped by Indians, on Little Pigeon, about twenty five miles from this place. These Indians had formed an ambuscade on a path near Mrs. Nelson's house. These young men were struck by eight balls; from which it is conjectured that there were that number of Indians; and were headed by a fellow called Towahka, who also hosted the party that killed Richardson's family. By this barbarous and bloody deed, an aged mother is bereaved of her only support, in her declining years."Also, in the same issue of the old papers "On Wednesday the 20th instant, on Pigeon,... thirty miles from this place, _________ Taylor was fired on and killed, by a party of Indians, who had formed an ambuscade on a path he was traveling, near a station. The number of guns fired by the Indians, at that time, was such as to induce the people out of the station to believe it was attacked by a considerable party."The exact site of the Richardson home is unknown to this writer, but it was undoubtedly in Richardson’s Cove. The Nelson brothers and their mother also may have lived in the same "East Fork" section. Since Taylor was killed near a "station," this could have been near Wear's Fort at the mouth of Walden's Creek on the "West Fork" of Little Pigeon, where Colonel Samuel Wear settled between 1783 and 1785, and built his log house which became the fort or "station." Later, "stations" or blockhouses, for the protection of the settlers, were created in both Richardson's Cove and Jones Cove, but it is not believed any were there in 1793.
On June 19, 1793, Wear's Fort was the scene of a major Indian attack, and the Gazette of June 29, 1793, reported that "in the night, a large party of Indians came into Wear's Cove, on Little Pigeon...and cut down much corn, stole ten horses and killed another, killed two cows and three hogs, which they skinned", for provisions, took seven bags of meal out of Wear's mill and broke sundry parts of it."
Thus it would appear that the first "Wear's Cove" was the lower part of Walden's Creek and the valley of the "West Fork" near the south of this Creek. In 1808 Samuel Wear obtained a Tennessee grant on an "improvement and occupancy" claim for almost 500 acres of fertile level land which extended from the mouth of Walden's Creek up the river almost to the present Pigeon Forge, but if Colonel Wear owned land or lived in the present Wears Valley, no proof of it has been found.
[John M. Gwin NOTE: We now have such proof. In the archives at the T. Elmer Cox Historical and Genealogical Library, Greeneville, Greene Co., TN, <grv@ggcpl.org> is the book East Tennessee Land Grants, Book 1-1, and on p. 283 is a deed no. 323 to a Mr. Obed Lovelady. Step five in the land survey description reads, "...then west with the land of Samuel Wear thirty-six chain and fifty links to a pine..." The land was surveyed 28 May 1807, so Col. Wear had the land next door to Mr. Lovelady at least on that date. Mr. Don Miller, Director of the Library, sent me a copy of this original deed. I am presently engaged in the Crowson's Cove Project in which these deeds' surveys are being platted and posted on our page at http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/CrowsonsCovePlatMaps.htm.] Perhaps the first people in Wear's Valley were the Crowsons, and the place was first called "Crowson's Cove."
On June 21, two days after the attack on Wear's mill, a small force of regular militia under one "Lieutenant Henderson" followed these Indians and "retook the horses and meal and three of the enemy's guns, killed two...and wounded a third." Apparently the Indians resisted when they saw the small force of whites, and nine of the latter were wounded.
Not satisfied with this result, sixty of tired, aroused, and angered Sevier County settlers met, probably at Wear's Fort, and chose Colonel Wear to command them. This was the beginning of the Tallassee campaign of the major Indians expeditions of the period, and composed entirely of Sevier County men. The use of such volunteers in offensive operations against the Indians had been forbidden by the territorial governor, William Blount, who had received his orders from the War Department of the newly established United States government. Only the regular militia could be used, and, if used at all, only in defensive operations. Nevertheless, “Lieutenant Henderson" and his militiamen joined the angry and defiant volunteers under Colonel Wear, who, in the words of the Gazette of July 13, 1793, “lamented the too-long neglect of succor from the general government of the United States."
Continuing from the Gazette, this entire force "marched to the mountains, where they discovered several trails, winding various ways, which at last terminated in one plain beaten path, leading to Tallassee, a town situated in the mountains boasted of by the Indians, as inaccessible to the white people. Near this town they overtook a number of Indians on the North bank of the Tennessee, when a heavy fire began on both sides; but the Indians soon leaped into the river, at which the white men ran to the bank, killed fifteen fellows, and took four squaws prisoners, which they have brought in with them, and wish to exchange for the property taken from them. During the engagement on the North, a sharp fire was kept up by the Indians from the South side of the river. It is to be regretted that a squaw was by accident killed in the water."
Colonel Wear's Tallassee expedition doubtless followed the branch of the Indian War Path from the French Broad that went up the west fork of Little Pigeon, and crossed some small mountains, to this Tuckaleechee town, and so on to the over-hill villages of the Cherokees." Tallassee was an "Over-hill" town on the Little Tennessee river just below the present Calderwood. To reach Tallassee from Wear's Fort, the logical route was through the present Wear's Valley, Tuckaleechee Cove, and Cade's Cove. This was probably the route of the War Party as well as Colonel Wear's men in 1793.
Indian depredations in Sevier County continued after the Tallassee expedition. The Gazette of May 23, 1794 contained this brief announcement: “On Tuesday the 5th instant Peter Pearcifield was killed by Indians near Wear's Cove..." Then in the issue of June 5, this sequel appeared:
"0n the 14th of last May, Joseph Evans, Thomas Sellers, and James Hubbart, junior, set out in pursuit of a party of Indians who had murdered Pearcifield, to take satisfaction; but not falling in upon their trail, they made towards Big Tellico town, where they discovered a large encampment of Indian warriors; in the night they went into their camp and killed four fellows asleep on the ground and immediately retreated, and got safe into the settlement on the 21st--Evans and his partly were dressed and painted like Indians."For 157 years this story of the murder of Pearsifield has been a tradition in the Crowson family of Wear's Valley. Mrs. R.W. Crosses, age 90, who has lived in Wear's Valley all of her life, remembers a slightly different version of this story, as told to her by Richard Crowson, her father-in-law. Recently she stated to this writer that Aaron Crowson, father of Richard Crowson, and a man named Pearcifield came from North Carolina to Wear's Valley to select homesteads, and that they, riding on their horses were attacked by the Indians in the gap of the mountain on the old Walden's Creek road. Pearcifield was shot, but Crowson escaped on his horse down Walden's Creek to Wear's Fort. Later he and other men returned and found Pearsifield's body which they buried on the Crowson land in Wear's Valley. Today an un-inscribed stone and a tree mark the site of this first grave in the Crowson family cemetery.Very few Indian attacks in Sevier County or elsewhere on the Tennessee frontier were reported in the Gazette after 1795. Sevier's expeditions against the Lower Cherokee towns in 1793 and Major Ore’s destruction of Nickajack and Running Water almost broke the warlike spirit of the Cherokee, but the issue of March 6, 1797, contained the following: "Just as this paper was going to press, we received information that on the 4th instant, Thomas Sheilds was killed by the Indians, in Sevier County, as appears by the deposition of Arnet Sheilds. They cut his head nearly off, took out his bowels, and otherwise shockingly cut and mangled him." Thomas Shields was a youth who lived with his parents, Robert Shields and Nancy Stockton Shields, early settlers in the upper Middle Creek section of the County.
Perhaps the last Indian murder in Sevier County was in 1800. Sometime in that year an Indian killed a boy named Tannover Runyan, who is believed to have been the son of Barfoot Runyan and Margaret Rambo Runyan, early settlers on the west fork of Little Pigeon. Mr. R. M. Runyan remembers the family tradition that the boy was killed in a field while searching for the family's horses. Again, as in 1793, when Colonel Wear led his unauthorized expedition against Tallassee, the aroused and indignant Sevier County settlers were on the verge of independent hostile action. The presence of Governor Archibald Roane, Tennessee's second chief executive, was required to quiet the people.
In 1798 peace was consummated at Tellico Block-house, where Governor Sevier and United States Commissioners met the Cherokee head men. The Treaty of Tellico extended the Tennessee area for white settlement almost to the junction of the Tennessee and Clinch rivers. After this, Sevier County no longer occupied such an exposed position on the frontier, and the people were enabled to lead a more peaceful life.

------------------------------------------------------------------------Notes
Peter Huskey lived in the vicinity of Back Creek in Frederick County during the early 1750's thru mid-1750's. During that time, he was the chain carrier for four different land surveys there.Sometime during the mid-1750's, Peter Huskey and his family moved to Rowan Co., NC. They settled in the area where southern Guilford Co. and northern Randolph Co. are now located.
He was found along with his son John Huskey on the 'William Millikan's List of Taxables' for Rowan Co., NC, in 1768.
Family tradition says his first wife was killed by Indians. No information has been found to verify this.
Peter Huskey, Sr. was found on the 1778 tax list for Captain Cox's District in Rowan Co., NC. His land was valued at 142 pounds. His son Peter Huskey, Jr. was listed on the same tax list, and his land was valued at 202 pounds.
On Saturday, 8 Aug 1778, Peter Huskey was listed as a 'nonjuror' in Captain Cox's District of Rowan Co., NC. He refused to take the 'Oath of Affirmation and Allegiance' to the State of NC.
In 1785 Peter Huskey and his family were living in Wilkes Co., GA near his brother-in-law, William Ogle and his family according to '1785 Tax List of Wilkes Co., GA Six District, Edgefield Co, SC prior to 1790. Peter Huskey is listed as the head of household in 1790 and 1800 Federal Census of Edgefield Co., SC.
On 28 Oct 1797 Peter Huskey and his son Jonathan Huskey of Edgefield District, SC bought 200 acres of land from William McCarter of Abbeville District, SC. This land was originally patented to William McCarter on 6 Nov 1786 from the state of SC. It was situated in the 'District of Ninety Six and County of Edgefield on a creek called Rockey Creek waters of Stephens Creek.' (Deed Book 22, p 265/66)
On 6 July 1801 Peter Huskey bought 24.5 acres of land from the state of SC. It was situated in 'District of Edgefield on a small branch of Rockey Creek, waters of Stephen Creek and Savannah River.' (South Carolina State Archives, Columbia, S. C. - State Plats Vol. 38 (2nd), p 359)
On 30 Sep 1801 Peter Huskey bought 289 acres of land from William Brafford of Barnwell District, SC. This land was on 'Rockey Creek waters of Stephens Creek' in Edgefield District, SC.' (Deed Book 22, p 275/77)
It is believed that Peter Huskey sold his lands before leaving for Sevier County, Tennessee in 1804. In 1805 Peter Huskey brought his married children (Isaac, Jonathan, John, Sarah, and two other daughters) with the Ogle clan from Edgefield District, South Carolina to settle in the Walden's Creek area of Sevier County, Tennessee.
In 1805 Peter Huskey entered 57 acres of land in the Emert's Cove area of Sevier Co., TN and held it for a short time. From Tennessee State Library & Archives, Nashville, TN there is a land grant (No. 1815) for Frederick Emert, assignee of Peter Huskey. By this grant, Peter Huskey sold the 57 acres of land in the Emert's Cove area to Frederick Emert prior to the issuance of the land grant from the state of Tennessee in 1806.
Prior to the War of 1812, Peter Huskey went with some of his married children to Union Co., IL and then to Jefferson Co., MO.
Family tradition says Peter Huskey came back from the West (Union County, Illinois or Jefferson County, Missouri) and died in the White Oak Flats community. He probably died before 1830. He is not listed in the 1830 Federal Census of Tennessee, Illinois, or Missouri. No data on his burial place has been found.

7. Mary Ann OGLE
NotesMartha Jane Huskey Ogle was part Indian.
After the death of William, Martha took her five sons and two daughters for a short visit with relatives in Virginia. Her brother, Peter Huskey, and his family then accompanied them on their long trip to the East Tennessee area to establish their home.
They were in the Sevier County, Tennessee as early as 1805. There is a record in Tennessee State Library and Archives that shows Hercules and Thomas Ogle sold land to William Murphy in 1807. This land was situated in the area of "mouth of Walden's Creek" in Sevier County, Tennessee.
On 19 January 1811, Martha Ogle, "relict of William Ogle" and her sons relinquished to James Atchison of Edgefield County, South Carolina their claim on the property that William Ogle had bought from George Hagood in 1796. This deed of conveyance was recorded in Deed Book 31, p 291/92 in Edgefield County, South Carolina.
According to the church minutes of "Fork of Little Pigeon Church", Martha Ogle was the one of the group of people from White Oak Flats Community that asked the Fork of Little Pigeon Church to establish a church in White Oak Flats as an arm of the church in Sevierville in December 1817.
Sometime between December 1817 to July 1826, Martha Ogle died and was buried in Gatlinburg, Tennessee behind Hays House Restaurant. However, the SMHS lists Mary J. Ogle in White Oak Flats Cemetery.

[John M. Gwin Note: The following obituary was Googled from the internet (emphasis mine):]KING, INA WALKER — age 86 of Gardner, IL, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at Ottawa Community Hospital in Ottawa, IL. Born April 30, 1917 in Sevier County to the late John H. and Mary (Trotter) Walker, Ina was raised and educated in rural Sevier County. She married Hoyel Sherman King December 22, 1939, and became a housewife and homemaker. In 1947 she and her husband moved to rural Kirksville, MO, where they lived for 20 years before moving to the Braceville-Gardner area in the mid 1960's. Sherman passed away June 24, 1983.
Ina was a niece of the famed Walker sisters of Little Greenbriar, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She researched and published a "Who's Who" book about her family genealogy. She was a member of First Families of TN, an organization of descendants from families who settled in TN prior to statehood in 1796. Ina loved writing poetry and has had several poems published. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, crafting, and gardening. Ina was a former 4-H leader and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Headrick's Chapel in Sevier County and attended the Church of Hope in Gardner. She was involved with the Senior Citizen Center and the Rebecca Circle church group both in Gardner.
She was preceded in death by her three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ernest and Lila Walker, George Walker, Roy Walker and Mattie Walker; seven sisters and four brothers-in-law, Ethel and Mack Maples, Minnie and John Maples, Pearl and Shannon Kirby, Marvin Trentham, Lucy Tallent, Edith Walker, Irene Walker, and an infant sister.
Survivors: children: John (Zelda) King, of Braceville, IL, Thelma (Lawrence) Buck, of South Wilmington, IL, grandchildren: Robin (Steve) Howard, of Wilmington, IL, Mark (Bobbi) King, of Gardner, Angela (David) Bexson, Sheri (William) Simms, Clayton (Heather) Buck, all of South Wilmington, IL; eight great-grandchildren: Trevor and Trent Howard, John Lawless, Kylie and Tori King, Cassi and Kristen Bexson, and Katie Simms; brother: Fred Walker, Wears Valley, TN; sister: Myrtle Trentham, of Loudon, TN; sister-in-law: Rowena Walker; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service 2 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Hickman officiating. Interment will follow in Mattox Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mattox Cemetery Fund, Cotter Circle, Sevierville, TN 37862. The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM Saturday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
My name is Catharine E. Walker Lindsay. I am the great-granddaughter of Joseph Walker, son of John Walker and brother of the Greenbriar Walker sisters. When my aunt and uncle were teenagers, they visited the Sisters at the cabin. My ggf was known by his family as Idaho Joe Walker. I had a chance to come to Johnson City, TN, and some friends and I hiked to the cabin. In searching the net for general information on the Sisters I found your site. Grandpa Joe was not big on sharing family history, so we only had bits and pieces of his background. Joe married Catharine Belle Maggart and they had children, one being Edis Virginia who married Clive John Lindsay. They had children the oldest being Clive Walker Lindsay, my father. I really appreciated the information on your site--it helps fill out the picture for that part of my family. Thank you. Catharine Lindsay
[John M. Gwin Note: (Thanks for sending this, Catharine--good to meet you, Cousin!)]
[John M. Gwin Note: (Thanks for sending this, Cousin Dan!)]I have discovered a poorly documented Walker living in Patty Hollow. Patty Hollow is reportedly located on Walden's Creek in Sevier County, TN. This is very near Edward Murphey (practically next door), and the "Meadow Creek" Walkers of Crowson Cove are very close as well. This information is scattered over a large number of web sites, and no two seem to match. I can confirm almost nothing. The couple is reported to have had 13 children. Some researchers report she is part of Walker DNA Group #1, but I don't know how such an assertion can be made for a poorly documented female.A Joshua Patty, son of John Patty (Paty), reportedly married Nancy Walker in the Union District of SC. Nancy was reportedly the daughter of Robin Walker.
Rev. Joshua Patty is reported dead by 1863 in Sevier Co. His wife reportedly removed to Polk Co., NC, and died 11 Mar 1876. She was intered in Bright Springs Cem., Polk Co., NC.

Subject: Walker - Gwin - HodgesHi --
If you check in Lunenburg/Pittsylvania/Goochland areas you'll find early Walkers there.
• David Gwinn witnessed a deed from Levi Bowling of Hawkins Co., TN ca 1830-40.
• David Walker, s/o John Walker, had a sister Nephany who married Edmund Hodges of Goochland, later Pittsylvania. They had a son named Jesse Hodges who married Nancy [nee unk.]. Jesse Hodges had a daughter, Nephany Hodges who married William Bowling. They lived on Bearskin Creek in Pittsylvania which was later split..... Nephany & William Bowling moved to Weakley, TN where they died after 1850. These Walkers and Hodges are very well documented.
• Edmund Hodges, s/o Thomas Hodges, had a brother named Welcome William Hodges. You'll find Welcome Hodges in the early TN records.Ernie Perry

John, I stumbled on your site recently after reading a 1998 article sent to me about the Walker Sisters of Little Greenbriar. The sisters were grandaunts of my husband’s. My husband died in 1995, a decorated (Agent Orange victim) Vietnam Vet. I wondered if it would be useful to you to know a little bit about a collateral line in your Walker genealogy? I’m taking this from a hand-written version he made in about 1973. Some of his info came from the TCIET book, some came from family info, and some from visiting the local cemeteries. Where I have some additional collateral info, I have noted that.
Notations: b (born) d (died) = (married) =1 (first marriage) =2 (second marriage)
The line would be: John Walker Sr.Children of John N. Walker and Margaret Jane King included the “Walker Sisters,” and of the boys, William Wiley Walker. This would be 6.2 on your web page. And it is William Wiley, not Wiley William, as listed there. b Sept 2, 1868, d Feb 5, 1925, buried at Mattox Cemetery, Wears Valley, TN. Married Nov 29, 1897 to Martha Jane Trotter (b Dec 28, 1874, d Jan 25, 1960, buried at Mattox Cemetery, Wears Valley, TN). I have 2 generations of the Trotter line. Their children:
His son Thomas Walker
His son Capt. William Walker
His son “Devil” Tom Walker
His son John N. (Hairy) Walker
Mary Jane Walker (b Jan 12, 1899, d in the 1990s in Albuquerque, NM)= John Andrew Abbott (b Jan 22, 1896, d Oct 12, 1966, buried in Mattox Cemetery). I have some of their line
Martha Alice Walker (b Apr 7, 1901, d March 23, 1947) = Lafayette Ault
Nancy Lena (called Lena) Walker (b Feb 12, 1904, died in the 1990s in Florida) =1 Ralph Human =2 Harry Dyer =3 Willie Hicks. I have some of their line
Louisa Evelyn Walker (b Mar 3, 1906, d May 30, 1963) = Luia (?) H. Abbott
John Frank Walker -- this is my husband’s father. I can get the death date but don’t have it right at hand. See info below
Josie Caroline Walker (b April 14, 1912, d between 1980 and 1990 in Tennessee) = James David Ward. I have some of their line.
Marjorie Ellen Walker (b Mar 22, 1915, d ? in Tennessee) = Odes Louis Shelton (b Oct 18, 1913, d ? in Tennessee). I have some of their line.
Note: Giles Daniel Walker was a brother to William Wiley Walker. “Uncle Dan” was thus a great uncle to my husband, Ronald William Walker. Uncle Dan served honorably in World War I. My husband remembers visiting the Walker Sisters (his great aunts) at their cabin at Little Greenbriar, and I have a few photos. When the last sister died, Uncle Dan was their last surviving sibling. Family history has it that he took what he wanted from their cabin, piled the remainder in the yard out front, and lit a large bonfire to keep it from going to the National Park Service, who had bought the homestead and its contents from the Walker Sisters earlier but allowed them to live there. Blankets exist that were woven on the loom he burned, as well as quilts.
John Frank Walker (called Frank, b May 14, 1908, d Oct, 1974, in Maryville, TN, buried at Headrick’s Chapel Cemetery, Wears Valley, TN) = Annis Clementine Melton (called Clementine, b Jan 11, 1916, d Sept 28, 1978 in Maryville, TN, buried at Headrick’s Chapel Cemetery, Wears Valley, TN). Married Oct 13, 1934. 4 children
Alma Delores Walker (b Aug 9, 1935) =1 Paul James Smith (no children) =2 Jesse James Wade, Jr (b Apr 22, 1933, d Feb 10?, 2003 in Tyler, TX) (no children), divorced.
Allen Dean Walker (called Dean, b Feb 28, 1943, d April 25, 1944, buried at Headrick’s Chapel Cemetery, Wears Valley, TN)
Ronald William Walker (b Jan 24, 1947 in Maryville, TN, d Oct 6, 1995 in Fort Collins, CO, buried in Grandview Cemetery, Ft. Collins, CO) = Celia Jean Smith (me! b Jan 11, 1949 in Salem, OR). Married June 2, 1973 in Maryville TN. 2 children. See below
Terry Lynn Walker (called Rusty, b Aug 23, 1951) =1 Avis (no children) =2 Tara (3 children, Robert William, Michael Stephen, Rachael Elizabeth)

John Myers recorded in his Bible that he was born on 26 Oct 1792 and said he was reared in Horse Creek, Greene Co., TN. He married in that county to Jane Dunn, daughter of Daniel Dunn and his wife Rhoda. Jane was born on 20 Oct 1792, and her birth date is recorded in her father's Bible, her husband's Bible, and on her tombstone in the Myers Cemetery in Townsend, TN.
The Headrick, Myers, and Dunn families moved as a group to Blount Co., TN about 1821. Dates of their removal vary because some of them retained land in Greene Co., TN and were back and forth for a number of years. The Headricks and Myers were of German extraction.
In Aug.1929 the John Myers Bible was in the possession of his Fancher granddaughters. It was copied by Etta Slatery that year.
John Myers and his wife had three children when they moved to Blount Co. They moved lock, stock, and barrel. Among their household goods was a spinning wheel made by Jacob Lindsay in 1818 which by 1929 was in the Fancher home. John Myers' rifle was given to his son John, and he in turn gave it to his grandson John. It was reported to be in the possession of a descendant also named "John Myers" who lives in Blount Co. at this time.
The author "Olga Edwards" has a powder horn that belonged to John Myers. It is actually a gourd in which the powder was carried. Age has colored it a rich brown, and it is polished from year of usage.
The 1830, 1840, 1850 censuses of Blount Co. show John Myers and his family. He was dead by 1860, and his widow Jane Dunn was living with their youngest daughter Susan Tipton in Townsend in Tuckaleechee Cove, TN.]
