One of our objectives is to tie together as many of these GWIN lines (all variations of spellings) as possible. It seems that a good way to do this is to create as many pages as we can, place them online, and see who can spot something that the rest of us have missed so far.

1. In September 2002, after I decided to pursue this route of building and posting as-of-yet unrelated pages, I contacted two people with whom I have been corresponding and asked them to supply information for the page. The first of these is Ms. Marsha White of Jefferson Co., AL, wife of Walter Miller White, one of Littleton's great-grandsons. She sent me copies of the following documents:

3. In May 2010 (and again in Jun 2012) Lise Deshea emailed us with some documentation on her line (including the will of someone who may turn out to be Littleton's father!--see the yellow box immediately below).

4. In Dec 2014, Jenna Hahn contacted us from 24.03 Kathryn's line to report that she is a great-granddaughter of Kathryn's granddaughter Donie Bell Gwin. Her email prompted me to update this page, including a renumbering of the generations (starting with Littleton, formerly gen. #24, now gen. #23).

5. In Nov 2017, Sheila Quick, mother of Jenna Hahn, contacted us. She has already updated her line a little, and I'm looking forward to seeing more that she has said she would send! :-)

Johnie T. Gwin, age 86, of Adger, AL, passed away Friday, May 15, 2015. Mr. Gwin retired from the Army National Guard, was a member of the American Legion and the Bible Baptist Church, and retired from the city of Bessemer after thirty-six years of service.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home with burial following in Prudes Creek Cemetery. Bro. Tony Wilmoth and Bro. Brent Higginbotham will be officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, May 18, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

OBITUARY

Betty J. Gwin "Granny" Hayes, born July 29, 1937 passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2015. She was a longtime member of Brookside Church of Christ and more recently West Concord Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her sons, Doug Hayes and Shane Hayes and her son-in-law, Wade Pickle.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at West Concord Church of Christ with burial at Prudes Creek Cemetery, Adger, AL.

         My daughter, Jenna Hahn, just showed me your page. Wow, I applaud you for taking on such a massive project! I did notice a few mistakes and understandable confusion within the Littleton Gwin line. If you would like, I can send you the info that I have to help clear up some of it.
         I have been doing research off and on since the early 1990's. Some of my info is from the Birmingham Library and online research. But much of it is from family. My mother was Vivian Johnson Hudson, daughter of Donie Gwin Johnson. Mother lived to be 96 and had an amazing memory until the end.
        I'm going to look through your site more thoroughly to see where I might be of some help.
        One thing that jumped out at me, though, was about my grandmother's siblings list. Her birth name was Olis Donie, listed in the census at age 7 as Olis D. Mother said that her mother hated that name and later had it changed to Donie Bell. So on the list of children, Donie Bell and Olis D are one and the same (daughter of William Richard Gwin).
        Also there is much confusion about Littleton's wives. Family lore did indeed say he was married in NC, had two sons that he left behind with his first wife (not sure of her name). However, Mary Burchfield and Mary Lockhart are the same person. Mary Polly Burchfield married John Lockhart first. Then she's listed as Lockhart when she married Littleton Gwin. He died in 1844, then she married Isaiah Parsons, (listed as Polly Gwin).
        This is just what I can remember without looking through all my papers and notes. I hope this helps!

Hi. My great-grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Gwinn Wallace of Jefferson Co., AL. She died in 1888 in childbirth. She had two surviving children, including my grandfather, M. D. Wallace.

Family lore has it that her father's name was Jepton or Jeptha Gwinn, but my mother says she was told there was a connection to a Judge Gwinn.
I would like to share a photo with you. This shows Mary Gwinn with her husband, Alfred Robert "Rob" Wallace, and their children. The baby on Mary's lap is my grandfather, Moltie Dee Wallace, and his sister, Leona is standing.

I found a Mary E. Gwinn listed as a baby in the 1860 census of Freelands, Jefferson, AL, in the home of Stephen and Ellen Gwinn, but I don't know if this is my great-grandmother. If you have any information that may help me, I would appreciate your assistance. Lise DeShea

As I looked at several census returns, specifically 1880 of Jefferson Co., AL, and 1900 of the same, it at first seemed to me that the 26.01--N. Mary Gwin, below, b. 1862 to Chesley and Nancy Minerva Gwin, might be Lise's g-grandmother--indeed, I even had this photo posted there. But new data she learned from her mother after we began studying this more closely led her back to her original theory, and I concur.]

Subject: More on Jeptha, Ellen and Mary E. Gwinn

...When we last communicated, I had drawn the conclusion that the Stephen T. Gwinn in the 1860 census must have been Jeptha T. Gwinn; there is a baby named Mary E. in his household, and I concluded she must be my great-grandmother. Today I found a document (attached) on Fold3.com that provides details about Jeptha's death as a result of wounds suffered in the Battle of Missionary Ridge at Chattanooga in 1863. It's a fascinating document, and it lists Ellen D. Hamer as his widow. The second attached document is some kind of widow's claim. You'll note that A.D. Hamer is a witness attesting to Ellen's identity as Jeptha's widow. The widow's claim also lists *three* minor children; previously I knew only about Mary E. and John D. Gwinn, who was a year old in the 1860 census for "Stephen" T. Gwinn. (I'm not trying to keep track of the spellings Gwin vs. Gwinn; some of these documents have both spellings on the same page.)

Here's my latest conclusion: By 1870 I believe Ellen had gotten remarried to a man named James Wallace. See the attached census page. Transcriptions erroneously have listed the children with the last name Gain. But all of the ages match up -- Ellen's, Mary's, John's and even Lina Eugenia (sp? hard to tell from the document), who is listed as 8 years old; therefore, she would have been born about 1862, after the 1860 census and before Jeptha Gwinn's death.

Now, let me give you the kicker: I believe this James Wallace was the uncle of Alfred Robert Wallace--aka Rob Wallace, Mary's eventual husband and my great-grandfather! According to the attached 1870 census, this James Wallace was b. about 1836, which matches up with my previous research about the James Wallace whose parents were Jesse Tate Wallace and Apsie McMillan. Jesse was a brother to George Washington Wallace, b. 5 Jun 1826, father of Rob Wallace. I'm convinced that this Ellen Wallace is Jeptha's widow because A. D. Hamer, who attested to Ellen's identity, is the next name on the 1870 census--next door to Ellen and James. Based on his age, I suspect he may be her father.

OBITUARY

Tullahoma resident and Woodbury native Lura Christine Ragan, 80, died July 15 at Life Care Center in Tullahoma.

A homemaker, a member of Grundy Street Church of Christ and the Coffee County Farm Bureau, she was the daughter of the late Shelah and Thursa Todd Witty and was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Bailey Ragan Jr., in 1990.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Carl Bailey and Deborah Ragan, III, of Chesterfield, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Lura Virginia and Milton Davis of Tullahoma; brother, Carl Dean Witty of Athens, Ala.; sisters and brother-in-law, Maggie and Garry Colley of McMinnville and Emma Pearl Arnold of Nashville; grandchildren, Jason Ragan of Kansas City, Mo., James Ragan of Decatur, Ala., and Elisabeth Ragan of Chesterfield, Christopher Davis of Manchester and Patrick Davis of Tullahoma; and one great-grandchild, William Henry Davis of Manchester.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Daves-Culbertson Chapel in Tullahoma with Dean Witty officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hands on Science Center.

Hello again. Thank you for writing. You are obviously a Christian man, and I just wanted to say that my Dad knew where he was going, and it gives me great peace to know that he is in the arms of the Saviour. My husband is a pastor here in Va., and I shared the gospel with my parents years ago when I was a teenager. He and my Mom lived with my husband and me for two years, and at times it was hard, and I regretted it, but needless to say, I am so so glad that I asked them to come live with us. They moved to a retirement home about 7 mos. ago. You have down his mother as "Dessie", and her maiden name was Stewart. Her parents, William and Margaret Stewart, were strong Christians who came over from Scotland. So it's nice to see the godly line coming through from parent to child, etc. My dad's grandfather, whom he called Papa Cowen, was a judge. Judge Gwin. And he married one woman. She died. Then he married Dora, my GGrandmother, who was her sister! Then the other two sisters, who never married, came and lived with them as well. Interesting, isn't it? Anyway, my dad's issue, if you want it, is: Kay Cowen Minter, [PRIVATE] David Christopher Cowen, [PRIVATE] and Carol Jo Cowen Webb, [PRIVATE] Thanks. Hi John,

I found your website through genealogy.com. My great-grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Gwinn Wallace of Jefferson County, Alabama. She died in 1888 in childbirth. She had two surviving children, including my grandfather, M. D. Wallace.

I haven't done much research yet on my connection with the Gwin/Gwinn/Guin etc. family. Family lore has it that her father's name was Jepton or Jeptha Gwinn, but my mother says she was told there was a connection to a Judge Gwinn.

Your website looks like it will be immensely helpful, and I would like to share a photo with you. This shows Mary Gwinn with her husband, Alfred Robert "Rob" Wallace, and their children. The baby on Mary's lap is my grandfather, Moltie Dee Wallace, and his sister was Leona is standing.

I found a Mary E. Gwinn listed as a baby in the 1860 census of Freelands, Jefferson, Alabama, in the home of Stephen and Ellen Gwinn, but I don't know if this is my great-grandmother. If you have any information that may help me, I would appreciate your assistance.

Hi John,

I think I've found something exciting that will explain the competing theories about Littleton C. Gwin's marriage history and link Jeptha to his wife's family. I hope this isn't information that you already know.

According to this website (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/a/r/Ann-M-Carrier/FILE/0007text.txt), Mary Polly Burchfield was married three times:

1. John H. Lockhart on 3 Apr 1825;
2. Littleton C. Gwin on 14 Oct 1830;
3. Isaiah Parsons on 25 June 1846.

This would support the notion that Littleton died in 1844, not 1865 as shown on the gravestone. Because Mary Polly is buried with Littleton, all I can imagine is that the marker for his grave was purchased upon her death, and someone's memory about his death year was poor. Interestingly, the website listed above says she had filed a claim for her third husband's pension, but died before it was paid, and her children sought to have the funds released to them to help defray their expenses for burying her (and, perhaps, paying for their father Littleton's marker?! Who knows!).

Further, I'm attaching an image from the 1850 census, showing who I think are Mary Polly's parents (Thomas and Rebecca Burchfield, both b. in S.C.), with Jeptha, Rebecca and Jeremiah Guynn living in their household. Jeptha is listed as 14, giving him a computed birthyear of 1836. So it appears that after Mary Polly remarried in 1846, these children ended up living with her parents.

What a way to celebrate Mother's Day, tracking down the ancestors of my great-grandmother!

Hi John,

I think I've found Littleton's parents! I can't take credit for doing anything but digging on Ancestry.com. Another ancestry member had a transcription of Thomas Guinn/Quinn's will. His wife was listed on this member's family tree as Elizabeth Littleton. They had 13 children: Richard, John, Littleton, Jesse, William, Jeptha Decatur, Thompson, Chesley, Milley, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth and Nancy. The will is signed 2 Oct 1838, and this ancestry member says Thomas died in 1838. I have attached two files containing the two-page transcription.
