Died
LANE--At
his residence in Liberty Township, on
Friday, June 1, 1883, Mr. Henry
Lane.
The deceased was aged about 52 years and
was a native of Ohio. At an early
day he moved to Iowa and settled in this
county, where he lived constantly until
his death.
He
was among the first to enlist and go out
to battle for his country in the late
war, and was sergeant of company
K., 30th Iowa infantry. After
bravely and nobly doing his part in many
hard fought battles, he was dangerously
wounded October 21, 1863, at Cherokee,
Alabama, the bullet entering his head
just behind the left ear, and from some
peculiarity of the wound was never
removed. He never entirely
recovered, and after 20 years of almost
continual suffering, died from the
effects of the wound.
The funeral was held from the late
residence of the deceased on Saturday
last, and all that remained mortal of a
kind and generous husband and father, a
good and respected citizen, and a brave
and noble soldier, was consigned to the
last earthly resting place in the
cemetery in Liberty Township.

Three families (and Four
Generations!):
(1) the couple standing in the center
are Ezra
T. Wells and [new great-grandmother] Eliza M. Louisa
Gwin Lane Wells;
(2) seated between them is Eliza's son
by her first marriage, John Gwin
(Guinn?) Lane, and seated beside
him is his wife, Emma Mumford Lane, with her
father, [new great-grandfather] Josiah Mumford,
standing behind her and next to Eliza;
(3) holding the baby, firstborn son Lowell Edison
Flack [born 30 Dec
1900], is John's and Emma's
daughter, Tempa
LeAlva Lane Flack, with her
husband, Edwin
P. Flack, standing behind her and
next to E. T. Wells. (Tempa and Edwin
are my great-grandparents.)
This photo was taken [est. 1901] in John and
Emma Lane's home in Yuma, Colorado, which
John Lane had built for Emma and where my
family still lives and farms. In fact, we
are an official Centennial Farm in Colorado,
thanks to John Lane and Edwin Flack and
their descendants.

[John
M. Gwin Note:
Lowell Edison Flack, the baby in this
photo, was born, according to Sallie's
data, 30 Dec 1900 in Westboro,
Atchison Co., MO. Here he
appears to be perhaps a year old, so
let's estimate the date to be about
December 1901. That would've
been a perfect opportunity to
celebrate four things: the first
Christmas of the new century, the
first birthday of this first
great-grandchild of both Eliza and
Josiah Mumford, and the first
Christmas in John's and Emma's brand
new home in Colorado. I can
imagine everyone's anticipation of
this event--train rides across Kansas
(and even farther for Mr. Mumford),
getting the new house ready for its
first house guests, first visit from
the great-grandparents, wanting
everything to be just perfect, and on
and on. On another note, Ezra
would die in two and a half years, so
this may have been the only time these
people were photographed
together. Finally, John Gwin
Lane's father, Henry William Lane,
whose photo appears above this photo,
had died some seventeen years earlier,
perhaps leading to John's reunion with
his mother and stepfather, Eliza and
Ezra (though we do not yet know
exactly when John was first reunited
with his mother).]

John G. Lane
Imbued with the typical progressive spirit
of the west, John G. Lane has become the
owner of one of the fine farms of Atchison
County [MO],
owning a valuable tract of three hundred and
ten acres. A native of Iowa, he was
born in Richmond, Washington County, on the
22nd of September 1855, and is a son of
Henry W. Lane, who was one of the first
settlers of that county. The father
was a native of Ohio and a son of Reynolds
Lane, who removed from the Buckeye state to
Indiana, locating near Terra Haute. In
that locality Henry W. Lane spent the days
of his boyhood and youth upon a farm, and
when twenty years of age he made his way to
the wilds of Iowa, settling at Richmond,
Washington County. His father also
came to this state and died in Madison
County at the age of eighty-two. His
wife passed away in Indiana. When the
Hawkeye state was upon the wild western
frontier, Henry W. Lane became identified
with its interests. Indians stalked in
motley garb through the forest, and deer and
wolves were frequently killed.
He married Miss Eliza Guinn [sic--Eliza Louisa
Gwin, above], a lady of
intelligence and refinement, belonging to
one of the old southern families. She
was born in Burlington, Iowa and was a
daughter of Richard Guinn [sic--Richard
Walton Gwin],
a prominent resident and one of the early
settlers of the Hawkeye state. He died
in Montgomery, Kansas, at the age
eighty-two, and his wife passed away at the
age of eighty years. At the time of
the Civil war, Mr. Lane, the father of our
subject, responded to the country's call for
troops and aided in the preservation of the
Union. He was a farmer by occupation,
and for many years followed that pursuit in
Lucas county, Iowa, where he died in 1883,
at the age of fifty-five years. In
politics he was a stalwart Republican, and
socially he was connected with the
Independent Order of Odd Fellows. At
the time when he "wore the blue" on southern
battlefields he sustained a gunshot wound
which ultimately caused his demise.
His widow married E. T. Willis [sic--Ezra T. Wells, above and
below]
and now resides in Wilson county,
Kansas. [John
M. Gwin Note--12 Dec 2019;
Eliza was not Henry Lane's widow but was
divorced from him. Henry died some
twenty years after Eliza married Ezra
Wells.]
John G. Lane, the only child of his parents,
was reared on the old home farm in Iowa and
from an early age was employed at work in
the fields, assisting in the plowing,
planting and harvesting. The public
schools of the neighborhood afforded him his
educational privileges, and his boyhood days
were quietly passed on the home farm.
At the age of twenty-two he was united in
marriage to Miss Emma Mumford, a lady of
good family, who was born, reared and
educated in Lucas county, Iowa, and was a
daughter of Josiah Mumford. Her father
was one of the pioneers of the Hawkeye state
and was one of the veterans of the Civil
war.
Mr. and Mrs. Lane remained in Iowa until
1882, when they came to Atchison County, and
for five years thereafter our subject
cultivated rented land. With the
capital he had then acquired through his
industry and energy, he purchased a fine
farm in 1887, the tract comprising three
hundred and ten acres of good land.
His is one of the desirable and attractive
farms of the county, everything about the
place being in excellent condition. A
substantial residence stands upon a natural
building site and is surrounded by
ornamental trees. There is likewise a
house for a tenant upon the place, and the
facilities for raising stock are
ample. Mr. Lane now feeds about one
hundred head of cattle each year, besides a
like number of hogs.
He has four children, namely: Tempa, the
wife of Ed Flack; Zella, Lloyd, and Rex; and
he has also lost two children, who died in
early life. Mr. Lane gives his
political support to the men and measures of
the Republican party. His wife is a
member of the Methodist Episcopal
church. He possesses a cordial nature
that wins friends, a social disposition that
enables him to keep them, and as a citizen
has gained a reputation for sterling worth
that is indeed enviable.

OBITUARY
Max
LaVerne Harper was born to
Betheen Faris Flack and Earle
Bartlett Harper on August
14, 1926, in Yuma, Colorado.
He was the oldest of three
brothers, including Howard
and Jim, with whom he would
share a lifelong partnership. During
the depression, when Max was
seven years old, his family
moved one mile
east of Yuma to the farm then
owned by Edwin P. Flack, his
maternal grandfather.
His
father, Earle, started milking
a few cows to benefit of his
own family, and soon
they were providing milk to
neighbors. Eventually, the
Harper Dairy was established,
and Max and Howard helped
deliver milk to the doorsteps
around Yuma.
Max graduated from Yuma Union
High School with the class of
1944. Max
Harper and Phyllis Jean Davis
were married on February 9,
1945, just about
the time of Max’s induction
into the United States
Army. He served in the 7th
Infantry Division in the
Philippines, Japan, and Korea.
After
Max returned from military
service, he went back to work
on the Harper Dairy,
eventually becoming a partner
with his father Earle and
brothers Howard and Jim.
Together, they expanded the
dairy operation to include a
large farming operation
growing wheat, corn, sugar
beets, soybeans, alfalfa, and
other crops. Max was
very active in his community
through the Lions Club, the
Yuma County Fair Board, and
the Yuma School Board.
For many years, he refereed
high school football and
basketball games in northeast
Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska.
In agricultural ventures, he
served as a member of the
Board of Directors of the
Rocky Mountain Sugar Beet
Growers Association, Mountain
States Dairymen Association,
and Dairy Farmers of America.
He was a candidate for
political office in 1990 and
was appointed by Governor Roy
Romer to the Colorado
Agricultural Commission where
he served for twelve years.
When
Max retired from farming, he
and Phyllis purchased a second
home in Sun City West,
Arizona, where they spent
winters and from which Max
continued to travel to DFA
board meetings. He
became an avid golfer after
his retirement, and he
developed lasting friendships
in Arizona with other sunbirds
and many Arizona
friends. During the
summers, he continued to golf
and play cards with his circle
of friends in Yuma.
Max
continued
to be interested and involved
in politics, and in 2007 he
attended the Democratic
Party’s State Convention and
Barack Obama’s acceptance
speech at Invesco Field.
In
August 2010, Max and Phyllis,
along with other Harper family
members, accepted a Centennial
Farms Award at the Colorado
State Fair in Pueblo,
Colorado, capping off a
lifetime spent in farming with
his brothers and his children.
Along
with wife Phyllis and son
Joe’s family, Max was an
active member of St. John’s
Catholic Church.
Max
was preceded in death by his
wife Phyllis, parents Earle
and Betheen Harper,
mother-in-law Rowena Davis,
brother Howard Harper, niece
DeeDee Harper, sons-in-law
Calvin Houston and Glen
Gordon, brother-in-law Jack
Davis, four infant daughters,
and many close relatives in
the Harper, Flack, Lane, and
Morris families. Along the
way, Max lost many close
friends whom he continued to
miss.
Max
is survived by his brother Jim
and wife Dianne Harper;
sister-in-law Maxine Harper;
daughters, Lynda and Sallie
Harper; son Joe and wife
Barbara Harper; grandchildren
Nathan Houston, Naomi Gordon,
Seth Park-Beach and wife Sung,
Jeremy Beach, Sarah Wynn and
husband Robert, Chelsea
Wiebers and husband Mark, and
Todd and Gabe Harper;
great-grandchildren Ethan and
Noah Houston, Max Park-Beach,
Trinity and Lily Wynn; his
nieces and nephews who were
very special to him, and a
host of wonderful friends.
Max
died after a brief illness on
November 3, 2012 in Yuma,
Colorado, at the age of
eighty-six.

OBITUARY
Duane “Doc” Flack was
born June 7, 1935, in Albuquerque, New
Mexico to Lula Markley Flack and Carroll
Elliott Flack. When Duane was young,
the Flacks moved to Greeley, Colorado and
added a brother, Norman Eugene, to the
family. Duane passed away March 31,
2020.
Duane graduated from
Greeley High School in 1953. In
December 1956 Duane married the love of
his life, Colleen Barnett of
Greeley. On that day, the “new”
First Congregational Church opened its
doors for their very first services.
He continued his education at Colorado
A&M graduating in 1957 with a
Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, then
received his Doctorate of Veterinary
Medicine from CSU in 1959.
In 1965 Duane joined
Monfort of Colorado as their resident
veterinarian. During his 32 years
there, Doc grew with the company to become
Manager of the Feedlot Division and a
Group Vice President of Monfort of
Colorado. Toward the end of his
career with Monfort, with a desire to help
the beef industry increase productivity
and add value, Duane created and was
the CEO of Monfort Integrated
Genetics. Duane also served as
President of Colorado Cattle Feeders,
Director of the National Cattlemen’s
Association, Member of the Food Animal
Task Force of the AVMA, the Foreign
Diseases Committee of the USDA, and the
Advisory Committee to the Commissioner of
the Food and Drug Administration. In
1991 Doc was awarded the Colorado Cattle
Feeders’ “Top Choice” Consultant of the
Year, and in 1996 the Award of Excellence
from the American Association of Bovine
Practitioners. Duane was an honored
Alumnus and Faculty member of CSU College
of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical
Science. Dr. Flack, among other
things, was also recognized as the Man of
the Year by the Greeley Jaycees, and
National Veterinarian of the year. Without
hesitation, Doc would attribute the weight
of his achievements to the company he
worked for and the people he worked with.
After retiring from
Monfort, Duane formed Associated
Agricultural Consultants. Doc
continued his work both nationally and
internationally training others to farm,
raise cattle, manage resources, and how to
provide their communities with life
sustaining professions and food sources.
Among a number of
organizations he belonged to and
contributed to, one of his favorites was
being a member and President of the
Milliken Fire Protection District Board of
Directors. During his tenure, he was
instrumental in the transition from an all
volunteer department to what has now
become the volunteer and career
firefighters department, Front Range Fire
Protection District.
Dr. Flack was a true
patriot who loved America. He was a member
of the ROTC in college and an avid student
of WW II, and he organized community
caucuses and served as a delegate to
Republican State Convention.
Duane and Colleen had
three daughters; Cynthia, Lauretta,
and Susan. No matter what else
demanded his attention, Doc’s family
always knew that they were his first
priority.
Duane was preceded in
death by his parents, in-laws, and
daughter Susan. He is survived by his wife
Colleen, brother Norman (Linda), his
daughters and their husbands -- Cynthia
(Kerry Vance), Lauretta (Dr. Mark Smith),
Grandchildren and Spouses -- Christine
(Chad), Kelly (Jesse), Nicholas, Justin,
Levi, Jacob, Lucas (Antoinette), Garrett
(Lindsie), Lindsey, and
Great-Grandchildren -- Rogan, Henry,
Harrison, Taylor, Kadence, Aiden.
Doc was a deep thinker,
a masterful planner, had a heart of gold,
and was a man of rare character. He will
be greatly missed.

age of 82, with his wife Linda and his
sister-in-law by his side.
Norm attended Greeley
public schools graduating from Greeley
High School in 1957. During these
years he earned many regional and national

competitions. He was a gifted
football player and was on the All State
All Stars in 1956-57. He received a

returned for his MA in Entomology in 1987.
He married the former

three children, and they later divorced.
Norm had a varied and
interesting series of careers going to
work for the Federal Land Bank and then
moving into savings and loan banking. For
a while during these years he farmed in
Weld County and then began farming full

America, the Caribbean, Canada and
Europe. Norm was also a skilled

quoted in the box, above,

the latter declares there were
three. Though we don't know in
what gaps they were actually born, I
have chosen for expediency's sake to
list the three here, in the ten-year
gap between Tempa and Zella. I
chose three over two because three
is closer to what I feel must have
been even more and unmentioned early
deaths (in the form of miscarriages)
in the five-year and six-year gaps

Pleasant
Valley Church Centennial
Celebrated 100 years of
service 12 Sep 2010
From
the online church
history page
maintained by Lee Zion
comes
the following paragraph
regarding the church's first
service:
"The
building was dedicated August
28, 1910, and the Yuma
Pioneer reported that the
building contained a "splendid
Williams organ". Upon
completion,
the congregation boasted
nineteen members and a salaried
preacher. Rev. York was
paid a yearly salary of $69.65
by the churches he served;
Pleasant Valley’s share was
$12.40. The first service
at the new church was a gala
affair. A quartet consisting of
Wesley and Ralph Weekly, Lena
Buchanan and Zella
Lane Lackey, drove out
from Yuma in a carriage rented
from the local livery stable to
perform."

Rev.
Stanley G. Lane of
Joliet, Illinois, went home to God
Wednesday evening, December 30,
2015, after struggling with
Alzheimer's and a heart condition
since 1997.
He
was born in Yuma, Colorado, on
August 20, 1925, the only child of
Lloyd J. and Nellie (Atkinson)
Lane. They worked a ranch
just outside of town where Stanley
was a cowboy.
He was a
U. S. Army Tech Artillery Sergeant
during World War II serving in
France and Germany.
He met
the love of his life, Betty Lou
Voight, while stationed in
Oklahoma. They were married
June 6, 1947.
Stanley
graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan
University and Garrett Theological
Seminary and took chaplain
training at Topeka State Mental
Hospital, all while being a
Methodist minister at Kingston,
Illinois; Scale's Mound, Illinois;
Elizabeth, Illinois; and
Williamsburg, Kansas. He was
the chaplain at the Illinois Youth
Commission Reception Center for
Delinquent Boys on McDonough in
Joliet in 1961 and served for 30
years. He was instrumental
in starting the Community Services
Center, the Senior Services
Center, and the Big Brothers of
Will County. He served on
numerous boards throughout Will
County and later volunteered at
Saint Joseph's Hospital for over
ten years.
Stanley
is survived by his children:
Jerry (Jean Evans) Lane, Sydney
(Catherine) Lane, David Lane, and
Linda (Stephen) Meiser, eleven
grandchildren, and thirteen
great-grandchildren.
Stanley
was preceded in death by his wife
of 63 years, Betty, in 2010;
grandson Jeremy L. Lane in 2013;
daughter-in-law Mary Lane in 2014;
and his parents.
Stanley
requested full military honors at
Abraham Lincoln National
Cemetery. Since most friends
and associates are sensitive to
weather, the family will hold
memorial services in the spring of
2016 at Grace United Methodist
Church and the Abraham Lincoln
National Cemetery. We hope
you will bring your families to
see this honor to one of our
nation's veterans.
Memorials
to Grace United Methodist church
of Joliet in lieu of flowers are
greatly appreciated.

I received the following Facebook
post from David's brother, Cousin
Sydney Lane:
My brother,
David, who is Viktor's
grandfather, collapsed and died at
his home. We made arrangements for
cremation. There will be no
services.
David was 66.
He had spent most of his working
life as a paramedic and then
training officer working out of
the Grady Hospital system of
Atlanta. These are the
hospitals that see the hardest
cases and from some of the most
dangerous communities.
During his career, he had been
shot, stabbed, and burned. On a
call to a convention center, he
revived a heart attack victim and
received a glowing letter from
those attending the convention--of
cardiac specialists! For
reviving a 'dead' victim, David
received the Gold Star Award that
is given for bringing someone back
from the brink.
His wife, Mary, preceded him in
death from cancer.
He
is survived by his son, Thomas;
his daughter, Robyn (Phillip) of
Georgia and her son (David's
grandson), Viktor; his brothers,
Jerry Lane (Jean) of Illinois and
Syd Lane (Cathy) of Georgia; and
sister, Linda Meister, nee Lane

Harper Note:
My {grand} uncle Rex visited my
Grandma Harper on occasion when I
was a little girl. I remember him
being a very tall man with a
strong build, and of course, he
had a large nose. He was a
formidable presence in the
household when he came to see
us--polite, but in charge.
Nelly Lane
(Uncle Lloyd's wife) was still
alive when my grandmother passed.
She was a tiny, bent woman at the
time. I have met Stanley Lane, who
is still living. I can't
remember if Stanley is Lloyd's or
Rex's son; I'll have to look that
up. Stanley's wife passed away
last summer. I think he must
be Lloyd's son. Anyway, he
is a minister and conducted the
service for my grandmother. I
believe he worked in prisons for
several years.
There is a
Dallas Lane on Ancestry.com who is
a cousin; again, not sure which
family. I would like to find
the Lackeys--Zella's family. Her
grave is in San Bernardino.
My dad told several funny stories
about their son Donald Lackey
trying to work on the farm--and
invariably messing something up.]

Here's Claire's
excellent
OBITUARY:
Denman
Claire Lane was born in
Neodesha, Kansas on August 22, 1931
to Rex Wells Lane and Beva Marie
(Henderson) Lane. He passed away on
May 9, 2019 at Elm Heights in
Shenandoah, Iowa.
After living
about 10 years in Neodesha, his
family packed up and moved to
Blanchard, Iowa. Coming from a
bigger town with paved streets, and
moving into Blanchard on a rainy day
with muddy, unpaved streets, he said
he wondered where in the world his
parents had brought them!
But he quickly
grew to love this little town, where
he met and made many life-long
friends.
While he was in
high school, he also met Ruby Irvin,
who was forever the love of his
life. After Claire graduated with
the Blanchard class of 1950, he and
Ruby were married on March 4, 1951.
They had just celebrated their 68th
anniversary.
Just a few months
after getting married, Claire and
his brother-in-law Bob Irvin,
entered into the U.S. Army. They
served during the Korean Conflict.
They were both stationed in Germany,
and were both discharged in 1953.
After returning
home, Claire worked for Lane
Drilling Company with his father,
Rex, and his brother, Carroll.
Not only did the brothers work
together, but they had married
sisters, so they were all
especially close. Both families were
growing, and Claire and Ruby’s
children, Teresa and Dwight, were
born during this time.
Claire’s father
Rex was always quite an
entrepreneur, and in 1960 he landed
a contract with the US Corp of
Engineers to drill 100 water wells
in each of the countries of Turkey
and Iran. So Claire and his
brother-in-law Dale Nally went to
Iran, and Rex and Carroll went to
Turkey, where they each spent one
full year working before returning
home. It was a hard time being away
from his family, but oh, what an
adventure and what stories he loved
to tell!
Then, thinking maybe he was ready to
try a different career path, he and
Ruby decided to move their little
family to South Gate, CA where his
oldest brother Verle lived. They
lived in California during 1963-1964
and enjoyed the new adventure,
experiencing everything they
possibly could while they were
there. But the pull of friends and
family returned them to Blanchard.
Claire and
Carroll continued growing Lane
Drilling after the death of their
father, and eventually the company
included Carroll’s sons and
grandsons.
Claire was also
very active in the United Methodist
Church and helped with dinners and
many activities that the town of
Blanchard held. He also served as
the mayor of Blanchard twice, once
in the late 1960’s and the second
term in 2008.
In 1983, Lane
Drilling sold to Stang Hydronics of
California, a major dewatering
company. Carroll moved to their
California office, and Claire
continued to work for them, drilling
wells all over the country. Stang
Hydronics was then purchased by
Griffin Dewatering, Inc., in 1988.
Claire and Ruby moved to Omaha, and
he worked out of their Omaha office
for two years.
In 1990, Claire
decided to give up drilling, as it
was requiring him to be gone from
home more and more, and he then went
to work for NSK-AKS in Clarinda. He
retired on his birthday in 1996.
He enjoyed his
retirement, spending time working
and doing welding jobs in his little
shop in Blanchard.
With health
problems in 2010, he and Ruby moved
to Essex to be closer to their
daughter and his healthcare.
They ended up
enjoying living in Essex very much,
and the move became permanent. They
enjoyed being closer to family and
being able to see their
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren every time they
came to town.
After some new
health problems during the last
year, Claire entered Elm Heights on
April 29, 2019.
Preceding Claire
in death were his parents, Rex and
Beva Lane; parents-in-law Warren and
Essie Irvin; brothers Verle Lane and
his wife Evelyn and Carroll Lane and
wife Betty; brother-in-law Dale
Nally; and sisters-in-law Ann Lane
and Ikie Lane.
He is survived by
his loving wife, Ruby; daughter
Teresa (Dennis) Perry of Essex; son
Dwight (Pam) Lane of Oakland, NE;
grandchildren Derek Perry (Tony
Vincent), Lisa (Jake) Strickland,
Dallas (Amanda) Lane, and Valerie
(Ryan) Holzer; great-grandchildren
Kaylee Lane, Connor and Ellie
Perry-Vincent, Taylor and Ty
Strickland, and Cameron and Delaney
Holzer; stepgrandchildren Ryan Yorty
and Sarah Yorty and her daughter
Peyton; also sister, Floy
Nally; brother-in-law, Bob
Irvin and wife Mary Ann; and many
loving nieces and nephews.

services will be held June 30, 2019

Mom had four kids: Bruce Dale Nally,
Michael Rex Nally, me--Kathryn Marie
Nally, and our younger sister Karen
Kay Nally. We all have
children, and there are quite a few
grandkids, too!
Mom (Floy) was born in Neodesha,
KS (on her mothers'
birthday). They moved to
Blanchard, Iowa, when she was
four. That is where I grew
up. Blanchard is around 15
miles from Westboro, MO. When I
was a young teen, we went out to
Colorado to see our distant
cousins. I remember meeting
these cousins who looked a lot
like my grandpa Rex and my
uncles. Grandma Lane's
(Beva) family also lived in
Neodesha and are buried
there. I moved to Kansas
eight years ago and am located
only 90 minutes from
Neodesha. Mom and I
visited the town a few years ago
and saw the locations of where
everyone lived. Kathy

Eliza L. Gwin Lane m2. Ezra T. Wells
Cousin Sallie
Harper's family photo, at the top of
this page, confirms this photo, right,
owned and contributed by Cousin Cordelia
Fischer, to be that of Ezra T. Wells,
not Richard Gwin, as Cordi and I had earlier
surmised from the pencilled inscription, visible here,
in Cordi's album.
Cordi
Fischer says that this photo is
labeled on the back,"Sis of Anna Bear
Freeman". Since it was taken
in Independence, Kansas (photographer's
stamp visible above), where Ezra and
Eliza lived and worked, Cordi
believed--and I agreed--that
it
was most likely Ezra and
Eliza. But
we were wrong--see below.
|
This means that the photo Cordi and I
had earlier thought was that of Ezra and
Eliza, left, is not
them at all. See below for the
remaining six possibilities.
|
|
|
Actually,
the mystery couple in the above picture
could be that of ANY one of Anna Bear
Freeman's sisters and her husband.
We had only chosen Eliza because she lived
in Independence, KS, where the photo was
taken. A list of all eight--now
six-- possibilities,
then, follows:
24.01--Mary Gwin
and Gideon Bear [No, a
photo we just got from Cousin Pat Critz
eliminates Mary.]
24.04--Jane Gwin
and Jehu
William Haigler
24.05--Sarah Ann
Gwin and Enoch
Haigler
24.06--Martha Gwin
and William
W. Snyder
24.08--Eliza Louise Gwin
and Henry Lane [No, we now
know they were divorced before she moved
to KS; he stayed in Iowa and probably
never was in Independence. And now
we even have his photograph.]
24.10--Elizabeth
Gwin and either Moses Adams
or William
S. Bartholomew
24.11--Margaret M.
Gwin and Ephraim Moore,
John Dillon,
or Dr.
Benjamin Parker
24.12--Caroline C.
Gwin and John H. Dunn

HELEN M. WELLS

Sept. 22, 1980 |
This stone for Patricia J. Wells, right,
has only a date of birth on it, leading us at
first to believe she was still alive in May
2008. However, when the family of Paul
and Helen were later found in the 1930 census
with one-year-old son Royce A. but without Patricia,
it became an even greater possibility that
Patricia's dates of birth and death were the
same, she perhaps even being stillborn. |
|
It
reads:
PATRICIA J.
SEPT. 3, 1925
|
Since
Helen's dates, above, seem to correspond
to Paul's, she must be his wife, and Patricia
must be their daughter.

{John M. Gwin
Note: In her notes
on the illness and death of R. W.
Gwin, Sr., above,
Cousin Cordelia Fischer identified
"Mrs. E. T. Wells" as being "Eliza T.
Gwin, wife of Ezra T. Wells". If
her identification is correct (and I
have no reason to believe it is not),
then this Mrs. Wells could be this
Eliza Louisa Gwin, since cursive
capital ells and tees are often
mistranscribed for each other.
Mrs.
E. T. Wells has been called
twice of late to the bedside of her
aged father, R. W. Gwin, living near
Independence, who is not expected to
live. He is 82 years of age. [Cordelia
Fischer Note: This
(Mrs. E. T. Wells) is Eliza
Gwin, wife of Ezra T. Wells.]}

This is clearly the family of our
Ezra T. Wells. Butler, MO, is 35 mi. SE of
Paola, KS. Ezra and
Eliza were living in Stanton, KS, in 1860 just
after they were married; in Indiana in 1861
when Albert was born; here in Butler, MO, in
1870; and finally in Neodesha, KS, in 1880
(and where Eliza is still living in 1910).

This is clearly the family of our
Ezra T. Wells. Cousin Cordi Fischer says that
Ezra was a druggist as was his son Albert;
however, I've not yet seen any evidence of
Ezra being a druggist. He is listed as a
shoemaker in 1860 and 1880, a farmer in 1870,
and a Justice of the Peace in 1900.

OK, this gives us Albert's wife's

Vanhorn, or did she marry again after Albert's

suspect the latter.

Hello, Mr. Gwin,
I just came across your genealogy pages on the web,
and I believe we are relatives.
Eliza Louise Gwin is my great-great-great
grandmother. Her parents were Richard W. Gwin and
Nancy Watkins. As noted on your site, Eliza was
married twice, first to Henry Lane, from whom she
was divorced. She then married Mr. E.T. Wells. She
states on a late census that she had two living
children. While you have Albert Wells as one of her
children, the guess that her other living child was
also a Wells is incorrect. She had a son with Mr.
Lane--John Guinn Lane--my great-great grandfather. I
am enclosing a photograph.
Standing in the back row (L to R) are my
great-grandfather Edwin P. Flack, Mr. E. T. Wells,
Eliza Gwin Wells, and Mr. Mumford, father-in-law to
John Lane. Seated (L to R) are my great-grandmother,
Tempa LeAlva Lane Flack, holding her firstborn son
Lowell Edison Flack, Eliza Gwin's son John Guinn
Lane, and his wife, Emma Mumford Lane. This photo
was taken in John & Emma Lane's home in Yuma,
Colorado, which John Lane had built for Emma, and
where my family still lives and farms. In fact, we
are an official Centennial Farm in Colorado, thanks
to John Lane and Edwin Flack and their descendants.
Edwin and Tempa are the parents of my grandmother,
Betheen Faris Flack. She and her husband Earle
Harper raised three sons, Max, Howard, and
Jim. Max (my father) and Jim are still living.
(I would prefer information about living people is
not posted on the web.)
While it is difficult to say, the photo you have
identified on your page as being Mr. E. T. Wells and
Eliza Gwin does not look like the same couple to me.
Eliza Gwin had a dark complexion, according to what
I have been told. I do not believe there was much
contact between my grandfather John Lane and his
Lane and Wells half-siblings after he moved his
family to eastern Colorado.
Thanks so much for all of your hard work. It was
great to see the picture of Richard and Nancy Gwin
and to have the information about the location of
their graves. I do have a public family tree on
ancestry.com, but until finding your site today, I
was not sure of some of my information.

Thanks
for
writing back, cousin John. I thought you might be
excited to know about a "missing" branch of the
family.
I am enclosing a link to John G. Lane's profile in
my ancestry.com Harper Family Tree. There are some
other photos of the family, as well as some
information about the land. The story about John
Lane is interesting - as it claims his mother Eliza
was widowed. I know this isn't the case, as John's
father Henry Lane
remarried a Clarissa
Godlove - and had several more children with him. I
recall seeing a census where John was living with
his father and step-mother and half-siblings prior
to his marriage. A cousin Jim Macrander - from Emma
Mumford Lane's side - has provided me with
information on the Lane siblings, as well as the
Mumfords.
We were told by an old aunt that the Lanes were
Cherokee. I have been thinking that Nancy Watkins
was perhaps then the Cherokee relative, but it is
obvious from her photo that she is not. Interesting
that they ended up living in Osage country.
I look forward to more reading on your site
tomorrow. Yes, you can use the names of living
relatives. Just leave out the details about
location for the time being.
All my best,

Albert Wells (John Lane's half brother) is living
with Rex Lane and his family in Neodesha in 1930.
Also - Rex's middle name is Wells - Albert's last
name.
Obviously, the families stayed close.
Hope all is well with you and yours,

Thanks, Sally!
I posted it to the page--great find!
John
John,
My Uncle Rex visited my Grandma Harper on occasion
when I was a little girl. I remember him being a
very tall man with a strong build, and of course, he
had a large nose. He was a formidable presence in
the household when he came to see us. Polite - but
in charge.
Nelly Lane (Uncle Lloyd's wife) was still alive when
my grandmother passed. She was a tiny, bent woman at
the time. I have met Stanley Lane - who is still
living. I can't remember if Stanley is Lloyd or
Rex's son; I'll have to look that up. Stanley's wife
passed away last summer. I think he must be Lloyd's
son. Anyway, he is a minister and conducted the
service for my grandmother. I believe he worked in
prisons for several years.
There is a Dallas Lane on ancestry.com - who is
cousin; again - not sure which family. I would like
to find the Lackey's - Zella's family. Her grave is
in San Bernadino. My dad told several funny stories
about their son Donald Lackey trying to work on the
farm - and invariably messing something up.
Have a good day,
Cousin Sallie

In June 2012,
Cousin Teresa Perry emailed us and updated several
details in her line--thanks, Teresa!
Directly below
is a copy of an
1859
Plat Map of English River Township,
Washington
Co.,
IA,
sent in by my cousin, Pat Critz, in May 2012.
INTRODUCTION
For the
benefit of readers who may not know, a
township is a six-mile square of land
containing 36 square miles. Each of
these square miles is called a
"section". The 36 sections are always
numbered starting in the northeast corner of
the township with Section 1. Section 2
is immediately to the west, continuing west
through sections 3, 4, 5, and 6.
Section 7 is immediately south of section 6,
then the sections are numbered to the east
with 8 through 12. This back-and-forth
pattern continues until section 36 is
reached in the southeast corner of the
township. In the map below, I used
red ink to highlight the borders of each
section and to circle each of the 36 section
numbers.
Each section contains 640 acres. Half
a section, then, is 320 acres, and a quarter
section is 160 acres. A quarter of a
quarter section is 40 acres. Find
section 1 in the map below. Can you
see that the northeast quarter section (160
acres) belonged to someone whose name
appears to be John Wembarker (if i'm reading
it correctly)? The southeast quarter
section belonged to a John Jegge. In
the northwest quarter section, S. Deitz
owned the top 80 acres, and two people with
the initials T. F. and J. M. owned the
bottom two 40-acre plots. The
southwest quarter section was subdivided
into four forty-acre plots, one of which was
owned by the same T. F., two of which were
owned by a J. S., and one of which was
evidently unowned.
SOME POINTS OF INTEREST
With that
introduction, several landmarks can be readily
seen:
- First, find the English
River meandering from west
to east across the middle of the township
through sections 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, and
13.
- Next, see Absalom Bush's
80-acre farm in section 19. (His
daughter Catherine married Richard W.
Gwin's son, William W.
Gwin (click any link to go
to the page for that individual).
- Moving east to sections 23 and 26, one
will notice the 240 acres of the J. Critz
family. Gideon and Mary Gwin Bear's
youngest child, Winnie Bear, made the
connection to this family when she married
Charles
Henry Critz in 1886, and they
became ancestors-to be of Hal and Pat
Critz (who sent us this plat map
and Bible pages).
- The town of Richmond
lay on 80 acres in section 30, and the 200
acres of Richard
W. Gwin and Sarah
Watkins Gwin appear a half
mile to the west in sections 30 and 31.
- A dotted line, which appears to be a
road, crosses the township through
sections 5, 8, 17, 20, 19, 30, and 31,
connecting the town of Richmond with what
could be a smaller village on the east
side of section 8 and extending to points
north and south of the township.
- Four 40-acre plots appear in sections 31
and 33, each labeled "G. B." and outlined
in pink. I cannot prove this, but I
believe them to have been those of Gideon
Bear and Mary Gwin Bear.
- And finally, sections 34 and 35
contained the 160 acres (and one more
40-acre plot marked P. F. east of and
adjacent to those 160) of Pressley
Figgins
who married Nancy E. Bear.

[John
M. Gwin Note, 11 Jun 2016:
I can't remember where I got the following
"LANE FAMILY" pictures and story, nor can I
recall why the pictures did not copy.
Perhaps I got it all from Cousin Sallie
Harper's page on Ancestry.com.
At the bottom it is attributed to "Betty
Lane", and a search of the word "Betty" on
this page reveals only two possibilities as
the writer: Betty Lou Voight
(who married Lloyd's son, 27.01--Stanley Gwin
Lane) and Betty Jean Irvin (who
married Rex's son, 27.02--Carroll Leon Lane.
Since the latter's death is mentioned in the
text, I'll say that the former is the
author. I must have received the
original as a handwritten text, since some of
the the words were evidently illegible and
left blank in my transcription. My
apologies today go to whomever sent me the
original, since I didn't even remember to list
that person as my source. I must be
getting old. Sorry.]
LANE FAMILY
F227
John and Emma Lane
and Tempa, Zella, and Lloyd in 1894
Lloyd Lane and Nellie Atkinson were married in 1918.
Dennis Lane, of Scottish ancestry, arrived in Ohio
in the 1700's. Acquiring much land, he set
about finding himself a bride. On Oct. 5,
1805, he married Elizabeth Harrison. On June
14, 1811, Reynolds Lane was born. Life was
harsh, and many young women died. Elizabeth
died soon and Dennis "bound out" Reynolds to Henry
Ward, whose wife was Elizabeth's sister,
Rebecca. They were given $500 and were to
treat Reynolds as their own. Dennis also left
Reynolds a parcel of land. Dennis married
twice more, on Feb. 25 1813, to Leah Arnett, who
died, and on May 15, 1822, to Margaret
Newland. His children were: Lilly, John,
Suckey, Noble, Hooper, and Mitchell. Lilly,
Nobel, and Mitchell remained in Ohio.
John G. Lane and
grandson Stanley in 1929.
Reynolds
married Hannah in
1838. Children were Hester,
born in Ohio, then they moved to Indiana, where Atlantic,
Levi, and Harrison
were born. Feeling the call to the west, they
moved to Washington County, Iowa. Henry W. Lane, born 1832,
was 14 at the time and went with them. He could
have been Reynolds' son. Born in Iowa were Harrison, Mariah, George R., Josiah,
Hannah, and John L.
In 1856, Reynolds returned to Iowa to sell his
land. His half brother Hooper
and his family moved back with Reynolds.
Henry
W. Lane grew up there and married Eliza Gwin Jan.9,
1853. They had a son, John
Gwin Lane, Sept. 22, 1855. Henry
W. and Eliza parted, and she went to Kansas to live
with her folks. April 29, 1860, Henry W. married
Clarissa Godlove, a
widow with three children. The Civil War broke
out, and Henry felt the call of duty on the Union
side. He and his half brother Levi
enlisted Aug. 16, 1862, in Co. K, 30th
Regiment. Levi
died of typhoid fever Oct 23 in Mississippi. Henry W. was promoted to
first sergeant. Upon arriving at Cherokee
Station, Ala., fierce fighting broke out, and Henry W. was shot over the
left occipital of the left ear, Oct. 23, 1963.
For some reason they could not remove the
bullet. He returned home to continue farming and
raise a family; children were Lenora,
George, Torrance, and Lulu. Henry lived with
his father for some time, as he was listed with them
in the 1860 census. At some time John went to
live with his mother, who had married Ezra Wells in 1858 and had a
son, Al. Henry W.
died June 1 1883. He and Clarissa are buried in
Niswender Cemetery, north of Lucas. Eliza, born
April 6, 1837, died Dec. 6, 1911. She and Ezra
are buried in Neodesha Cemetery in Neodesha, Kansas.
John
Gwin Lane grew to manhood and moved to
northwest Missouri where he married Emma
Iona Mumford Feb. 3, 1878.
Children were
Tempa Lealva Lane, born Oct. 1, 1878;
Cordah Aletha Lane, born July 11, 1883;
Orie Lane, born April 19, 1886, who
died very young;
Zella Lane, born Sept. 30,
1887;
Lloyd J. Lane,
born July 26, 18__; and
Rex Wells Lane,
born March 10, 1899. Emma was in frail health,
and thinking the climate would be better in dry air,
John moved his family to Yuma in 1910. When they
were unloading their possessions, George
Huey, pioneer rancher, said he had
never seen such a fine pair of mules. The Lanes
always enjoyed having good livestock.
Tempa
Lane married Edwin
Purcell Flack Feb. __, 1901.
They had three children: 1. Lowell E. Flack married Ada Bash. 2.
Betheen Faris Flack (became
Mrs. Earle B. Harper
on 22 Jun 1925 in Denver, CO) had attended a year of
college and showed promise of becoming a good
artist, a talent she enjoyed. Betheen was
