San Jose, on Monday, July 1. A
second memorial service was held
Tuesday at Grass Valley Assembly
Church, Grass Valley, California.
Ray and Catherine Armstrong, parents
of Mrs. Frances Titus, her brother,

It is with indescribable
sadness that we share with you that Jeff
Rhoden passed into eternity last night (4
Aug 2021) after a two-week battle with
Covid.
Right now,
we simply ask for prayer and privacy for
DeAnna and the kids. If you would like
to help support them in this impossibly
difficult time, I will place a small
GoFundMe (just for practical needs in the
next couple of weeks) and a meal train in
the comments below.
Thank
you for your love for our family, thank you
for your prayers, and thank you for honoring
our request for privacy for Deanna and the
kids as they grieve.
God is with us, even in this.
We love you!

The
California Marriage Index records the
marriage of
a James S. Christenson to a Marcia
M. Gwin (b. 1939)
on 26 Jun 1959 in Los Angeles, CA (via
Ancestry.com). It
is not confirmed that this is OUR Marcia
Gwin; however,
there are no red flags at this time (Feb
2016) so the possi-
bility is not hindered. [John M. Gwin Note,
26 Apr 2016:
Voila! Cousin Danny's note, below,
confirms that this is indeed our Marcia.]
[Danny Gwin Note:
I finally found my aunt Marcia about two
weeks ago. She married James S.
Christensen in the 50's, and his job
required they travel overseas a lot. I
know they were in Germany for some years and
then London for several more. Had no
idea where they were and had no hope of
finding her (did not know their last
name). Found her by accident searching
for a phone number. Crazy the stuff
you find when looking for something/someone
else. I think she has family info,
possibly pics, but they are busy helping Jim
with a project right now. I hope to
get it soon. April 2016]
The California Birth
Index records the birth of a Marcia
Marie Gwin as 21 Oct 1938 in
Los Angeles County. The
mother's maiden name is listed as Clinfman.
(Our Marcia
M.'s mother's maiden name is Chapman, so it's easy to see
how this could be a
mistranscription.) Nevertheless, it
is not
confirmed that this is OUR Marcia Gwin;
however, there are
no red flags at this time (Feb 2016) so
the possibility is not
hindered.

John H. Gwin is not yet married,
though he will be in just a matter of a few
months, weeks, or even days. Where are the
Thompsons? I haven't been able to find them
yet anywhere in Kansas.

however, since we've been told her name was Mary

Aha! Mary Jane says here that her
parents are from Ireland and Pennsylvania.
Lauretta's death certificate (below) says that
her mother's maiden name is Thompson. A search for a
Mary Jane Thompson in Ohio
in 1850, turned up John and Mary
Thompson,
born in Ireland and Pennsylvania,
respectively, living in Cross Creek, Jefferson
Co., OH, with children John, 20; Matthew, 18; Mary Jane, 17 (b. ca.
1833); Moore, 11; Nancy, 9; Margaret,
7; Richard, 5; Caroline, 4; and Thomas, 1.
Surely this must be the family of John H.
Gwin's wife, Mary Jane. Now if we could just
find them in Kansas in 1860 or 65...

to be the same family as is listed on this

parents do not seem to be correct. Was John
just ignorant of the true places of birth?
Or was he perhaps absent (e.g., in the field
working?) when the census was taken, and his
wife answered the census as best SHE knew?

From his age
here, Charles is b. ca. Dec. 1904-Jan 1905.
In 1910, Lutitia reports that she has
had two children die. I'm guessing that
Charles is the 8th-born, the births of the
two deceased children having come in the
5-year gap between Richard and Charles.

OK, now I'm convinced that this is

not convinced at all that this is our Walton;
his mother's POB is correct, but his father's,

Arthur probably served in

We're almost convinced
that this is our Lauretta, d/o John H. and Mary
Jane Gwin. The 1957 death certificate below
helps us believe that, as do the PsOB of her
parents. (Her dad's POBwas IL, not IN, however.)

Modified Register for John
W THOMPSON
First Generation
1. John W
THOMPSON was born1,2 about 1770 in County
Tyrone, Ireland. He died3 in 1849 in Cross Creek,
Jefferson, Ohio, United States.
John W. Thompson emigrated from County Tyrone,
Ireland with his wife and four children around
1806.
He settled in the Cross Creek area of Jefferson County,
Ohio between 1807 and 1809, where additional
children were born. His children, with the exception
of Mary and Nancy, married and settled on nearby
farms in the Cross Creek/Steubenville area. Mary and
Nancy did not marry and lived out their lives on
the family farm.
His will was made in 1842 and probated in 1849, naming his
ten children. At the time of the making of
his will, his wife was still living, as he makes
settlement for her. It is assumed that she died
between
1843 and 1850, as she is not living with her daughters in
the 1850 census. No given name is known for
his wife, as she is referred to in his will as "my loving
wife."
After the distribution of his property, Mary and Nancy
remained on the farm until their deaths. As named
in the probate of his will, his children were: (1)
William, (2) Matthew, (3) Margaret, (4) John, (5) Moore,
(6)
James, (7) Nancy, (8) Richard, (9) Thomas and (10) Mary.
John's birth year was assumed from very broad age ranges
in 1830 and 1840 census records.

Identified in husband's will only as "my beloved
wife". Estate willed to her until her death was
distributed
in 1850; therefore assumed death 1849-50. Age
was assumed from very broad age ranges in 1830 and

(excerpt from biography of Matthew Thompson referring to
his father John Thompson)...."When he was
two years old his father brought him and the rest of the
family to the United States and located in
Jefferson county, Ohio, among the pioneers...John, grew to
maturity and was married when a young man
to Maria Ross, who was a native of Jefferson county, Ohio.
In 1850 they came to Washington county,
Iowa, and entered wild prairie land from the government
and here spent their latter years, Mr. Thompson
dying at the age of seventy-two. Twelve children were born
to them, two of whom died early, namely:
William, deceased; John, also now deceased, lived in
Pleasant township, this county; Mary, Moore,
Nancy, Margaret, Caroline, Thomas, Robert. Matthew, of
this review, was the third child in order of birth
in his father’s family...The parents of the subject were
forty-four days making the tedious and somewhat
dangerous overland journey from the Buckeye state to
Washington county, Iowa, bringing with them
three wagons and nine horses. They had hard work getting
through in many places. The father secured
one hundred and sixty acres of land here for which he paid
five dollars per acre. He began life in typical
pioneer fashion, erecting a log cabin and stable which, as
he prospered, gave way to more substantial
buildings, for in time he had a very comfortable home and
an excellent farm. He was a good citizen and
did a great deal for his community in many ways."

In the book The Thompson Family of Jefferson County, Ohio
compiled by Bob Hanes,
Albert Thompson recalled (p. 20): "Living across the
street from Grandma and
Grandpa Thompson in New Alexandria were three Thompson
'boys.' They were
James A. Thompson, born 1855, died 1934, William M.
Thompson, born 1858, died
1934 and J. Ellsworth Thompson, born 1862, died
1936. Actually they were all
bachelors. Their father was the brother of Richard
Thompson so they were cousins of
Thomas. They all played instruments. The
brothers, Grandpa Thompson and a
couple other farmers from the area would all get together
once a week to practice for
playing in the church orchestra on Sunday mornings."
