BIOGRAPHY: Elk County, Kansas History Book, part 7. E. Haigler, farmer, P O Grenola, was born in Virginia in 1824; in 1830 his parents settled in Ohio, remaining there about ten years, and thence to Iowa. In 1857, he emigrated to Kansas, locating in Calhoun County, and was among the earlist settlers in the county, and put up the first saw-mill in the county. At the end of two years, located in Miami County. At the end of two years, settled in Coffey County. While there, in 1861, he enlisted in the Second Kansas Infantry, serving six months. He then returned to Miami County, and was there five years. In 1871, he located in Howard County (now Elk) just after the survey was made. His claim is on Section 35, Township 31, Range 9; was seventy miles from a railroad when he took his claim. He has well improved the place, which contains 160 acres, all under cultivation, excepting twenty-one acres of pasture, all fenced, and he has planted a fine orchard of seventeen acres, about the best in the county, and has all kinds of fruits. He takes great pride in his fruit-growing, and besides the common fruits has a few specialties, among which will be found whortleberries. His peach and apple crops are very large. In 1841, he was married in Washington County, Iowa, to Miss Gwin, of that place. They have six children--Mary, Smiley, Isabelle, Erastus, Laura, and Clara. |

Grenola, Kansas, Thursday, March 4, 1926Sarah Ann, third daughter of Richard and Nancy Gwin, was born in Louisa County, Illinois, August 23, 1831, and died March 2, 1926, at the age of 94 years.
She moved with her parents to Iowa when about 4 years old, where in 1847 she was united in marriage to Enoch Haigler, who departed this life on October 20, 1896. To this union were born nine children, four of whom preceded her to the grave.
Grandma Haigler, as she was known to a large circle of friends, was a devoted Christian woman, having united with the Christian Church at the age of sixteen and followed the teachings of this church to the very last. To write the history of her life would be to write the history of the frontier days of the middle west.
Born in Illinois when that state was considered to be the western edge of civilization, she moved with her parents to Iowa and then with her husband and family to Jackson County, Kansas, in 1858, later moving to Coffey County.
In 1871, she with her family moved to Elk County, Kansas, and settled on a claim, and here she and her husband, as had always been their custom, set about to organize a church, for no matter where they were, God always came first.
On March 2, 1926, about 9 a.m., Grandmother Haigler started on her last journey to that promised land where there is no parting and where it will surely be said to her as it was said to Him who died on Calvary's tree, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
Mrs. Haigler died at Independence at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hines. The body was brought to Grenola where she had lived most of her life, and funeral was held Wednesday, and interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery.

In the fullness of years, she has passed away. There is no great grief, only a hush in the house and that sense of emptiness that comes to even a crowded household after a death.
Your mother was a wonderful woman. You can be proud of her fine record. The memory of her sweet life must be precious to you. The outstanding impression which her life made upon me was that of poise.
Hers was a life well spent, admired, and loved, and [she] leaves behind an influence which no human mind can trace.
She was a Christian, and in her heart she holds the faith that sees the light beyond the tomb.
She loved the truth and hated a lie. To be honest and honorable were her highest virtues.
She was always true to her convictions.
She lived the full cycle of her years. Upon her face was the glow of an immortal dawn. Her faith had not faltered nor wavered through the vicissitudes of time. Her hope was in God.
We, too, have her hope. We believe in the Father's house of many mansions. We must catch the light of her vision and walk in it. We must follow her as she followed Christ.
She gave her life to her Savior nearly eighty years ago and for fifty years has been identified with the Church of Christ at Grenola.
She leaves to cherish her memory one brother, Richard Gwin of Jefferson, Kansas, and three daughters and one son: Mrs. Mary Stiles of Grenola, Mrs. Laura Hines of Independence, Mrs. Clara Binkley of Oklahoma City, and Erastmus M. Haigler of Ponca City, Oklahoma--also twenty-four grandchildren, fifty-two great-grandchildren, and fifteen great-great-grandchildren.
She leaves the precious memory vouch safe to us in the kind deeds done, in the hearts of those whom she touched to finer and better things.

[John M. Gwin Note: Mr. Travis Wham of Elk Co., Kansas, found LaFayette's grave just east of Grenola, KS, while hunting in a field in Dec 2009. Then still in high school, Travis researched his find online, found this website of mine, and contacted me.
There are 13 other graves there, too, he says, and there's a fence around them. The graves are located halfway between Moline and Grenola exactly one-half mile north of U.S. highway 160 and not quite a quarter mile east of County Road 264. They are located in the corner where two hedgerows come together to make an ell. Here is a link to a Google satellite photo of that location.

shared with me, John M. Gwin, in June 2010 by Ms. Dorothy Keplinger, volunteer docent at the
Grenola Grain Elevator Museum, and found by her in the Haigler file at the museum.
In the early days before the railroad extended past Independence, Kansas, Enoch Haigler and sons Lafayette, Smiley, and Erastus and two other men freighted lumber, nails, hardware, building supplies, and a lot of other merchandise from Independence to Oxford and Wellington. They would pick up flour, cornmeal, and other milled products from the Oxford mill. They got apples and other fruits and vegetables at Wellington and took them back to Independence to ship by rail to the cities back East. It was on one of these trips as they were returning to Independence by way of Grenola and were camped on Grouse Creek, that Lafayette died. They had made camp for the night, had supper and bedded down the stock, and were all asleep. One of them heard a noise and on investigating found it was coming from Lafe's wagon. He was having a nightmare. They awakened him, and all smoked a pipe of tobacco. As he seemed to be alright, they went back to bed. He started it all over again, and they couldn't get him awake, and he died in Smiley's arms.

Bonnie Louise Stiles Hobbs, of Oklahoma City, OK, formerly of Vernal, UT, passed away peacefully at home with family members at her side on Jan. 31, 2008.
Bonnie was born Aug. 26, 1922 in Grenola, Kansas to Edison E. Stiles and Mabel Altha Wood Stiles. She married William R. "Dick" Hobbs on Nov. 16, 1941 in Seminole, OK. Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter, Jareita Kay Strickland. She is survived by one son, Joe Hobbs, and daughter-in-law Jacque Hobbs, of Vernal; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Bonnie was laid to rest next to her husband and life partner in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Farmington, NM.

Jareita Kay “Kay” Strickland, 63, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, died Saturday, October 20, 2007, in Norman, OK. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 26, 2007, at Crosspointe Church with Joe Grizzle officiating.
Mrs. Strickland was born February 26, 1944 in Seminole, OK to William Robert and Bonnie Louise Stiles-Hobbs. Kay married Jim Strickland on June 26, 2004 in Las Vegas, NV. She enjoyed spending time with her girlfriends and formed the Girls Night Out Club. They would meet the second Thursday of every month for food, fun, and laughter. Kay was a loving daughter who devoted her time to take care of her elderly mother whom she loved dearly. Kay was not only a wonderful mother to her children, she was also their best friend.
No matter how busy she was, she always made time for her grandchildren. They were the light of her life.
Kay was preceded in death by her father, William Robert Hobbs of Vernal, Utah. Survivors include husband, Jim Strickland of the home; three daughters: Kim Priesner of Blanchard, OK; Shannon Moore and husband Bruce of Norman, OK; Cheri Lyn Smith and husband Terry of Norman, OK; two sons: Shayne Strickland of Oklahoma City, OK; and Clint and wife Koi Strickland of Noble, OK; mother, Bonnie Louise Hobbs of Oklahoma City, OK; brother, Joe Hobbs of Vernal, Utah; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends. DIED
Nancy Bell Haigler was
born in Washington County, Iowa, December 30,
1854. She moved with her parents to
Kansas in 1858 where she has resided ever
since.She was married to W. J. Tabor in August 1875; to this union were born four children, one son and three daughters, two little girls, Sadie and Osey, dying in infancy. She is survived by the son, Edwin Tabor of Upper Lake, California, and one daughter, Mrs. Carrie Dubendorff of Oklahoma City. Funeral services were held at her home Friday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by H. Wade, pastor of the Christian Church of Moline, amid a bed of roses brought by the sympathizing friends and heartbroken relatives. Her body was taken to Greenlawn Cemetery to await the judgement day. S. B. Haigler was tried in Justice Lanter's court Monday and fined $5 and cost amounting to about $35. On default of payment he was taken to Howard where he is now in the county jail. Haigler's offense was getting drunk Christmas and using profanity on the streets.

SMILEY B. HAIGLER
Smiley Baumon Haigler was born in Washington County, Iowa, February 23, 1856, and died in Chautauqua County, Kansas, March 10, 1916, age 60 years and 16 days. He came to Miami County, Kansas, with his parents in 1858, and the family again moved to Elk County, Kansas, in 1871. In 1888 on June 8th, he was married to Mary Rule of Winslow, Arkansas, who survives to mourn her loss. To this union were born Will, who lives at Morehead, Kansas; Mrs. Sarah Lewis of Grenola, Kansas; Miss Laura Manning of Kansas City; Mrs. Alta Patterson of Moline; and Lucy, Eugene, Mary, John, Enoch, and Martin, who are still at home with their mother. His aged mother, whose home is at Oklahoma City; one brother, Erastus Smiley of Ponce City; and four sisters mourn his sudden death. His sisters are Mrs. J. E. Stiles of Grenola; Mrs. Bell Tabor of Grenola; Mrs. J. C. Hines of Independence, Kansas; and Mrs. John Binkley of Oklahoma City. The deceased had been making some complaint of stomach trouble, but it was not considered serious, and he went to work as usual on last Monday. On Friday morning after breakfast he complained of feeling badly, and a doctor was promptly summoned, but before medical aid could reach him, he was beyond the reach of human skill. The funeral was held on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Methodist Church whith which the family is connected; the interment was in the Greenlawn Cemetery. The widow and children in their sudden trouble have the sympathy of the community. To every home sooner or later then must come trouble and bereavement. The most tender affection and the most devoted attachment will not keep death away, but seldom does it come without some warning of its solemn approach. Let us all the more assist with our sympathy those who suffer from such a sudden calamity.

Blanche married in Oct 1926 in El Paso, TX, to Herbert Cox, Sr. (b. 9 Nov 1904 in El Paso, TX; d. 2 Jan 1985 in Hemet, CA; bd. unk.). They had one child. I have their divorce record somewhere, but can't remember the date. Blanche later remarried Albert Mallicoat. Herbert also remarried Bonnie McCoy (who is the great-grandmother I grew up with; she remembered a lot of info I have today). Neither new marriage brought any children. shared in June 2010 by Ms. Dorothy Keplinger, volunteer docent at the Grenola Grain Elevator Museum, and found by her in the Haigler file at the museum.
Mr. Carl Manning and Miss Laura G. Haigler were united in marriage, Saturday evening, July, t, [sic]1913, in the reception room of the office of the Probate Judge at Howard, Kansas, Mrs. A. Cullison probate judge pro tem, officiating.
The bride was gowned in white massaline satin draped over white voile. The groom wore the conventional black.
Mr. William and Miss Sarah Haigler, brother and sister of the bride, accompanited them. Russel Wilber took them up in his Studebaker car.
This event ended a romance which started when Mr. Manning placed his name and address in some merchandise ordered by the Misses Haigler in May, 1912 of the Montgomery Ward & Co., store.
Mr. Manning is foreman in the furniture department of the above firm and has lived in Kansas City most of his life. Mrs. Manning is the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Haigler of this city.
This young couple have a host of of relatives and friends to wish them well over life's journeys.
Mr. and Mrs. Manning left Sunday morning for Kansas City, Mo., and will be at home for the present at 2106 Troost Ave.

Martin W. Haigler
HUTCHINSON - Martin Watkins Haigler passed away on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 at the Golden Plains Health Care Center in Hutchinson, Kan. He was 93 years of age and a long-time resident of Hutchinson.
Martin was born on June 19, 1910, at Grenola to Smiley Bonham and Mary LouAllen (Rule) Haigler. He attended school at Grenola except for one year when he attended school at Pleasant Hills, Mo., while working as an apprentice baker. He graduated from Grenola High School in 1928.
His father died when Martin was five years old. As a young boy, he gained experience at herding cows, delivering milk and groceries in his wagon, and working for the grocery store and drug store in Grenola. Martin also worked for the Grenola bakery which began his life's work.
On June 19, 1932, he married Shirley Lucille Rutherford at Howard, and to this union were born four sons, Dan, Jack, Glen, and Clark. In 1940, Martin completed a baking course at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn., and was employed at bakeries in Willmar, Minn., Watertown, S. D., and Salem, Ore. Shirley and Martin later returned to Kansas where he was employed as manager of a wholesale cake and sweet goods plant in Hutchinson until his retirement in 1973.
He is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hutchinson, a member of Silver Leaf Chapter #464, Order of the Eastern Star in Hutchinson, and has been a member for 66 years of Hope Masonic Lodge #155 in Howard.
He is survived by his wife., Shirley; his sons, Dan and his wife Betty of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Jack and his wife Mary of Canon City, Colo.; Glen and his wife Laura of Towanda, Kan.; and Clark of California; 29 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and nine sisters and brothers.
Graveside services were held at 2 p. m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at the Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard with services conducted by Hope Masonic Lodge #155.
A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church of Hutchinson. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.
The funeral arrangements are being made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Travis Wham of Kansas found LaFayette's
grave just east of Grenola, KS,
while hunting in a field in Dec 2009. There are 13
other graves there, too, he says, and there's a
fence around them. The graves are located
halfway between Moline and Grenola exactly
one-half mile north of U.S. highway 160 and not
quite a quarter mile east of County Road
264. They are located in the corner where
two hedgerows come together to make an ell.
Lafayette married and died before he was 30. I don't know if he and his wife had any children. |

Retired Staff Sgt. Grant Brooks, Jr.
Staff Sgt. Brooks, 62, died April 5, 2001, of cardiac arrest at his home in Widefield. He was a civil service printing press operator and retired from the Army after 22 years of service.
Staff Sgt. Brooks was born April 16, 1938, in Paris, Ky., to Grant and Sallie (Franks) Brooks Sr., who are deceased. He was married Oct. 31, 1999, to Dianne Perryman.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Michael E. Haigler Jr. of Colorado Springs, Max B. Haigler of Kearney, Neb., and Matthew M. Haigler of Colorado Springs; a daughter, Melissa D. Haigler of Las Vegas; three foster sons, Lasief V. Swisher, Eugene Jones and Maurice Ledbetter, all of Colorado Springs; and three grandchildren, Michael E. Haigler III, Darius L. Haigler and Xavier S. Haigler, all of Colorado Springs.

History of the Grenola Christian Church
Our history goes back to the
little town of Canola. In the spring of
1870, the Hart brothers, John, James, and Hugh,
laid out a town site to which they gave the name
of Canola. The land was owned by James Reid
and H.L. Corum. (We still have Corum Creek
just south of town.) The first establishment
was a general store belonging to the Hart
brothers. They later built a two -story
hotel. John Reid built a schoolhouse.
In 1879, the population of Canola was around
100. Just a few miles to the north, there
was a rival town called Greenfield. It had
been established in 1869 on a claim belonging to
A. A. Toby.
In 1870, a young man named Robert
Lawyer came to Kansas and settled on a claim on
the Caney River. (At that time it was called
Cana River.) He was born in Ohio, grew up in
Illinois, and moved to Bates County, Missouri in
1869. Bob Lawyer built a cabin on his
homestead and planted a crop. In December of
1871, Bob returned to Missouri and married Miss
Nellie Gardner. They returned to their cabin
home near Canola.
Both Bob and Nellie were faithful
Christians. They worked in the union Sunday
School which met in the local school house.
(M.S. Miller taught in this school the winter of
74-75. He was described as a good teacher,
was a bachelor in those days, and had a strong
disposition to play with the big boys and girls.)
After a few years, Bob and Nellie
longed for a New Testament Church in their
community. On January 22, 1876, Bob Lawyer
and a young minister, Leonard Mason, called a
meeting for the purpose of organizing a Church of
Christ with the Bible alone as their guide.
Leonard Mason chaired the meeting and Bob Lawyer
acted as clerk. Eighteen people responded
and became the charter members of the Canola
Christian Church.

The very next day, January 23,
1876, Bro. Mason baptized Lafayette and Myrtle Haigler
and Margaret Considine in the Caney River.
Isabel Hawkins joined by letter. This made a
total of 22 members. The first elders were
Robert Lawyer and W. H. Guy. The first
deacons were W. T. Fuson and James W.
Chaplin. And, of course, the first minister
was Leonard Mason.
In March of 1877, Bob Lawyer drove
his team and wagon 29 miles to Elk City to get
Thomas Fanchier to come to Canola to hold a
two-week meeting. There were 20 additions by
immersion. In February of 1880, Fanchier
held another meeting with five more members
added. The congregation continued meeting at
Canola for the next five years.
In 1879, the Kansas City, Lawrence
& Southern Kansas Railroad was built through
the southern part of Elk County joining
Independence and Winfield. The railroad
passed between Greenfield and Canola about equal
distance from each. Both towns needed the
advantage of the railroad, so they consolidated on
July 7, 1879 and formed a new town on the
railroad. They used parts of both names and
called their town “Grenola”. It grew rapidly
since the business houses of both towns moved to
the new site. By 1884, there was a
population of 700. There were three general
stores, two groceries, one furniture store, two
drug stores, two millineries, two hardwares, two
hotels, three billiard halls, two restaurants, two
blacksmith shops, two wagon shops, one saddlery
shop, two livery barns, and one lumber and coal
yard.
By 1884, the leaders of the Canola
Christian Church could see the need for relocating
to Grenola. Many of their members had
already built homes in Grenola. It was on
June 14, 1885, that the Canola Christian
congregation dedicated their new frame building on
Chestnut Street and became known as the Grenola
Christian Church.
At the time of this move to
Grenola, the minister was James L. Jacobs and
elders were Robert Lawyer and T. M. Miller.
Deacons were A. B. Kessinger and O. C.
Shackelford. This makes six generations of
Kessingers who have worshipped with our
congregation.
In the early days, two additions
were made to the building. A vestibule was
added to the front and a 14-foot addition was
built across the back. Later, this room was
partitioned into two classrooms. But in the
early days, the ladies wanted a meeting room that
was large enough for quilting.
Until the 1950’s, the Grenola
Church was a member of the Disciples of Christ
organization. Each year reports were sent to
the headquarters at Topeka. In 1908, the
membership was 137. By 1918, it had dropped
to 96. It reached a high of 229 in
1924. There were 62 additions that
year. Enos O. Wonder was minister. By
1950, membership was down to 130.
No history of the church would be
complete without mentioning Belle Reid Yates, the
church’s only woman minister. She served for
18 years – nine years from 1913 to 1922 and nine
years from 1928 through 1937.
Mrs. Yates was born Isabelle Jane
Fouts in 1860 in Iowa. She came to Kansas
with her parents in 1874. They took a claim
a mile west of the Moline Cemetery. In the
fall of 1875, at the age of 15, Belle got a job
teaching school for $16.75 a month. Seven
years later, in 1882, she began teaching in the
Grenola Schools. She met Duncan Reid, the
local postmaster, and they were married in
1883. They were the parents of one son,
Frank. Mr. Reid died in 1901. Belle
carried on as postmaster for several years.
It was during this time that she
was an active worker in Women’s Relief Corps and
did a good deal of traveling and speaking.
She preached her first sermon in 1897 when she was
stranded by high water in a western Kansas
town. In 1906, Belle was married to Abram
Yates, a local hardware merchant.
In 1912, the Grenola Christian
Church was without a minister. The church
board asked Mrs. Yates if she would preach for
them. She said “yes” but that she wanted to
be ordained first. Members of the Board
laughed and said, “You’ve been preaching all of
your life, why be ordained now?” But she was
very insistent, so the ceremony was planned.
On March 30, 1913, at the Grenola Church, Belle
Reid Yates was ordained a minister of the
gospel. She was 52 years old. The
church hired her as minister for $15 a
month. A few months later, her salary was
raised to $30.
When Mr. Yates became ill, they
went to Claremore, Oklahoma, thinking the mineral
baths would help his health. While living in
Claremore, Belle preached at four different
preaching points. She told the following
story about her work in Oklahoma. One Sunday
at Vertigris, she walked in just as the
superintendent was closing Sunday School. He
stopped, looked at her, and said. “I will
not stay in the house with a woman preacher or one
who wears a silk dress.” She walked to the
front and took hold of her dress and asked, “Shall
I take my dress off?” This broke the tension
and they asked her to stay.
Mr. Yates died in 1920.
Belle resigned her ministry at Grenola in July of
1922. During the twenties, she preached at
the Elk City church. She also held many
revival meetings, even going as far as Sacramento,
California, to hold a two-week meeting.
Mrs. Yates had an unusual but very
effective method of marriage counseling.
Whenever she heard that a couple were having
marital difficulties, she would pack a bag and
move in with them. She stayed until their
problems were worked out.
Mrs. Yates was a forceful
speaker. She felt that the Word she preached
was so important that no noises or confusion
should distract her listeners. On many
occasions, she would stop and sweetly say, “Will
the mother with the fretful baby please take the
baby out?” Teenagers misbehaving on the back
rows could expect her to stop her sermon, look at
them and not continue until the noise ceased.
Mrs. Yates was never heard to
speak ill of anyone. It was her custom at
funerals to say something good about the deceased
as she passed the casket. On one occasion, a
man died who was not all he should have
been. The community wondered what Mrs. Yates
could possible say good about him. But they
were not disappointed. As she passed his
casket, Mrs. Yates commented, “He was a good
whistler.”
Mrs. Yates said many times that
she wanted to die on Friday and be buried on
Sunday. It was on a Friday afternoon,
November 21, 1942, when several ladies of the
church were gathered at the community hall getting
ready for their annual bazaar, that word came that
Mrs. Yates was dying. Vera Jordan and Oea
Logsdon went to her home and stayed with her until
the end. She got her wish, dying on Friday
just before midnight. The funeral was held
on Sunday at the community hall to accommodate the
hundreds of grateful people who had been helped by
her both spiritually and physically. A choir
from the church sang. Belle Reid Yates was
82 years old when she went to be with her Master.
The following is a news article
written by Mrs. Yates on the occasion of the
fiftieth wedding anniversary of Robert and Nellie
Lawyer.
“It was another red
letter day in the history of the Grenola Christian
Church when the members “took time to be holy” in
honoring the golden wedding anniversary of R.M.
Lawyer and his wife who have been faithful members
of over forty years. He has been an elder
all that time and she has acted as becometh an
elder’s wife. After the morning service at
which time Mrs. Dora Brown united with the church,
the people all went to the building where Mrs.
Bacus and her class had spread the feast.
Here they were joined by many old friends who came
to do them honor. Mr. and Mrs. Lawyer were
seated in two golden wicker chairs, gifts from the
crowd. In front of them were beautiful gold
and white chrysanthemums, gift of Miss Dea Hart,
and seated with them were 31 relatives and all
together there were 134 who ate dinner with them”.
In 1944, the church purchased a
house to be used either as a parsonage or
additional classrooms. The house was moved
two blocks up the street. Do you remember
how the sidewalk to the east of the church was all
broken up? This happened when they moved the
building. Harry McGlasson was pulling it
with the old county caterpillar. The
building was on two sycamore logs. He
crossed the sidewalk to reach the foundation they
had fixed just north of the church building.
Joe Samuels was the minister. After he left,
there were several student ministers from Phillips
University, so there was no need for a
parsonage. The house was rented. It
was not until July of 1954 that it was decided to
fix up the old house and use it as a
parsonage. The Hughes were the first to live
in it. It was also used by the Bumps,
Wilsons, Cordells, and Barry Willbanks.
Later it was used for classrooms and class
parties. In 1971, the church purchased
another parsonage about two blocks south.
Some of the women of the congregation tore the old
building down in July of 1973. Our present
parsonage was built in 1985. Harvey and
Ethel Richardson were the first to use it.
They were followed by the Paul Beighley family and
then by Wallace and Wanda Wartick.
In 1953, thirty-three acres of
land was given to the church by Ethel
Wilkerson. It was to be a permanent memorial
to her parents, J.R. and Sallie Mann. It
must be used for church purposes and cannot be
sold. At the present, the land is in the
soil bank, and the proceeds go into the church
treasury.
During the fifties, the
congregation left the Disciples organization and
became an independent Christian Church. The
two ministers who provided leadership at this time
were Paul Hesser (51-53) and Warren Hughes
(53-57). The complete break came in
1957. Board Member Wallace Wartick led in
drawing up a church constitution. It was
adopted on February 17, 1957. The Grenola
Christian Church is a congregationally governed
body, incorporated under the laws of the State of
Kansas.
Willis Fowler was minister in 1966
when it was decided to add an educational
unit. A building committee of seven was
selected to oversee and report to the
congregation. They were Byron Stiles,
Albert Miller Sr., Frank Hawkins, Carl Reeves,
Maxine Fowler, Mamie Burdett, and Walter
Smith. The old Cloverdale Church building
was purchased for $100. This 24 by 40-foot
structure was moved 10 1/2 miles into
Grenola. Many hours of labor were donated by
members as they prepared this building for
use. The completed building contained a 10
by 14-foot kitchen, a rest room, cloak room and a
24 by 30-foot auditorium.
The church has always realized the
importance of good youth programs. The
Christian Endeavor was strong during early
years. Later in the forties and fifties,
there was an active Youth for Christ. The
church supports the camping programs. For
years, it has been the policy of the church to pay
camp expenses for any child who needs help.
Since 1950, 47 young people have attended Bible
colleges and are now engaged in Christian
work. Youth ministers have been hired to
work with our young people. Youth groups
meet every Sunday evening.
As the church grew, more space was
needed for classrooms and other church
activities. In 1990, the two buildings were
connected. This provided four new
classrooms, two restrooms, and a large fellowship
area. In 1996, the congregation saw the need
for a larger sanctuary. Work was begun on an
addition to the west side of the original
building. In 2001, work was begun on a new
entrance to the building. This was finished
just in time for the 125th anniversary celebration
on June 22, 2001.
In 2006, the minister is Wallace
Wartick, who is in his 19th year with us.
Elders are Ronald Allison, Lynn Kelly, Dean
Keplinger, Dwane Kessinger, Tom Kessinger, Jack
Perrigo, and Dave Wolfe. Deacons are Perry
Fulsom, Don Land, Donnie Miller, and Josh
Kessinger.
The work in Grenola is going
forward, as the board members, minister, and
congregation strive to keep to the purpose as

The following is a list of the Soldiers of the War of the Rebellion residing in Elk county, Kansas as returned by the township assessors:

The Soldier List
The list of old soldiers published by the Courant a few weeks ago was very incomplete, owing to the neglect and carelessness of many of the township trustees in taking the soldier census. The list we published was taken from the County Clerk's record and would have been correct had the trustees carefully performed their work. We already have about thirty names which were omitted from the list and it is our desire to, as soon as possible, publish a supplemental list, giving all who were missed in the first list. We call on all the township trustees, the post commanders, the old soldiers, everybody, who can help us gather up the names, which should have appeared on the other list--to help us in this work. We would like the names sent in by the 1st of October if possible.

F. J. Hatfield, M. D., Olathe, Kan., is a leading member of the Johnson county
medical profession. Dr. Hatfield was born near Dayton, Ohio, October 19, 1861,
and is a son of John and Clarissa (Miller) Hatfield, both natives of Ohio and
descendants of pioneer American stock. The paternal grandfather Hatfield was a
native of Virginia and settled in the Northwest Territory, a part of which
composes the State of Ohio, about 1800. He and two other brothers were making a
trip down the Ohio river when they were attacked by hostile Indians and became
separated. The other two brothers were never heard from. John Hatfield, the
father of our subject, was engaged in the packing and cattle business at
Cincinnati before the Civil war. When that conflict came on, his business was
practically ruined and he met with heavy financial losses, and in 1862 removed
to Indiana and located twelve miles south of Fort Wayne, where he remained until
1878, his wife dying there in February, 1863, aged thirty-four years. Later he
came to Kansas and died at Grenola, April 3, 1893. The Hatfield family consisted
of seven children, as follows:
Martha J. married William McBride, and is now a widow, residing in Oklahoma;
Horace, a capitalist, residing at Portland, Ore.;
Phoebe, now deceased, was the wife of James Heffling;
Elizabeth married L. Robinson, Holdenville, Okla.;
Mary B., married George Earl, Fort Wayne, Ind.;
John M., retired, Pratt, Kan.; and
Dr. F. P., [sic] the subject of this sketch.
Dr. Hatfield attended the public schools of Indiana until sixteen years of age,
when he removed to Illinois and attended a private school at Rushville, Ill. He
then taught school in Schuyler county, that State, for two years and in the
meantime also attended school. In 1880 he came to Kansas and was engaged in
teaching in Brown county for two years when he went to Elk county, where he also
was engaged in teaching for two years. He then took up the study of medicine
under the preceptorship of Dr. J. B. Lewis, of Howard, Kan., and after pursuing
his studies there one year, he entered the Eclectic Medical Institute,
Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was graduated in the close of 1886, with the degree
of Doctor of Medicine. During his vacation of 1885 he was engaged in practice at
Jackson, Tenn., when yellow fever was epidemic at that place. In 1886 he went to
Grenola, Elk county, and was engaged in the practice there until 1908. He also
studied pharmacy and passed the State board examination in 1901 and also
conducted a drug store in connection with his practice. Dr. Hatfield has had an
active business career outside of his field of professional work. He has been
largely interested in the development of the oil and gas field of Elk county,
having bought out a developing company there and after having done considerable
work in that line sold his interests to the Standard Oil Company at a good
substantial profit. However, he still owns several hundred acres of undeveloped
territory in that section of the State. In 1908 he came to Olathe where he has
since been engaged in the practice of his profession and has, perhaps, the best
practice in the county. He has a fine home on a forty-acre tract adjoining the
city of Olathe, on the west, and his offices are located on West Park Street,
opposite the court house. He is interested in various commercial enterprises in
Johnson county, being vice-president and director of the Patrons Bank and a
director in the Olathe Electric Light and Power Company. Dr. Hatfield has been
twice married, his first wife being Miss Mollie Elliott, daughter of R. M.
Elliott, of Grenola, Kan., to whom he was married December 27, 1887; she died
May 7, 1903.
On June 11, 1905, Dr. Hatfield was united in marriage
to Miss Mae Haigler, of Elk county, Kansas. They have
two children, Marie Patricia, born March 17, 1907,
and Franklin P., Jr., born May 26, 1912. Politically Dr.
Hatfield is a Democrat and takes a keen interest in the affairs of the party. He
has been a member of the Kansas State board of medical examination and
registration since 1901, with the exception of Governor Stubb's administration.
During the course of his residence in Elk county he served three terms as
coroner of that county and was a member of the board of United States pension
examiners during President Cleveland's second administration. He is a member of
the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and a member of the grand lodge. He was
trustee of his local lodge for twenty-five years. He is a thirty-second degree
Mason and belongs to the Wichita consistory. Dr. Hatfield has taken considerable
post-graduate work. In 1897 he took a course at the New York Post-Graduate
Medical School, specializing in operative surgery, and for a number of years
specialized in surgery but recently is devoting himself more along the lines of
general practice, and specializing in ear, eye, nose and throat diseases in
which he has met with unusual success.
