11 Rules for the Rough Draft (RD):

1. You may use pencil or pen. (In my class, the RD must be handwritten and not typed--this is to ensure that the student has done her/his own work. The TE and FD may be typed, however, and I encourage this whenever possible.)

2. You may use front and back of the paper.

3. You may use any abbreviations you wish.

4. You may have spelling and grammar errors.

5. Your paper may be torn, wrinkled, and messy--as long as you can read it!  :-)

6. You may single space.

7. You may correct any errors you wish.

8. Your handwriting may be sloppy, as long as you can read it yourself.

9. The length of the paper is not as important as is the organization.

10. Any quotes from other sources MUST be identified and the sources cited. Plagiarism is a definite no-no and will result in heavy penalties, including a zero on the paper and a hot slip. (See below.)

11. The grade will be based on the organization of the paper and (to some extent) the length.

12 Rules for the Teacher Edit Draft (TE):

1. You may use pencil, blue or black pen, or computer. (I encourage you to type your TE draft and FD on your computer since it is so easy to make minor corrections and reprint--if you've saved it, that is!)

2. You may use front and back of the paper.

3. You should not use abbreviations.

4. There will be no spelling or grammar errors to your knowledge.

5. Your paper may be torn, wrinkled, or messy.

6. You must skip lines (double space) in order to allow your proofreader to edit your work between the lines.

7. Errors may be corrected with proper editing marks only.

8. If the paper is not typed, your handwriting must be legible.

9. The paper must be at least as long as the assigned length.

10. The grade will be based on the types of errors made and the length.

11. Any quotes from other sources MUST be identified and the sources cited. Plagiarism is a definite no-no and will result in heavy penalties, including a zero on the paper and a hot slip. (See below.)

12. The Rough Draft must be stapled underneath.

12 Rules for the Final Draft (FD):
1. You must use black or blue pen or computer--no pencil. (I encourage you to type your TE draft and FD on your computer since it is so easy to make minor corrections and reprint--if you've saved it, that is!  :-)

2. You may use only the front of the paper.

3. You must spell out everything except standard abbreviations (Mr., Mrs., Dr., etc.).

4. There must be no errors.

5. Your paper must not be torn, wrinkled, or messy.

6. Your paper should be double-spaced, but it will be accepted single-spaced.

7. Errors may be corrected with White-Out, or that page may be recopied.

8. If the paper is not typed, you must use your best handwriting.

9. The paper must be at least as long as the assigned length.

10. Any quotes from other sources MUST be identified and the sources cited. Plagiarism is a definite no-no and will result in heavy penalties, including a zero on the paper and a hot slip. (See below.)

11. The grade will be based on all the above.

12. The Rough Draft and the Teacher Edit must be stapled underneath.

CAUTION!  Any quotes from other sources MUST be identified and the sources cited.  Plagiarism is the act of copying someone else's work and taking credit for it oneself. Plagiarism is a definite no-no and will result in very serious and heavy penalties, including a zero on the paper and a hot slip(In high school, this can result in failing and having to repeat the course!)
And plagiarizing copyrighted works can result in fines, imprisonment, or both! So learn it now: DO YOUR OWN WORK!
