I am seeking information on Captain Sylvester Gwin, who was from Lawrence County, Mississippi. He was a Circuit Clerk there before the Civil War, and enrolled in the Confederate Army as war broke out, receiving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, then 1st Lt., then Captain of Company A.
After the war, I believe he left the Lawrence County area for maybe Neshoba County? He is said to be buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Jackson, MS. Lincoln County was made from parts of several counties, including Lawrence County, and his memory was honored when the old soldiers and women of the county named their United Confederate Veterans Camp the Sylvester Gwin Camp and the Sylvester Gwin Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
I am researching his name and history in advance of our Sons of Confederate Veterans Convention that will be held in Lincoln County this coming June [2006]. I would also appreciate any photos of Mr. Gwin.

Gwin--William McNichols, John Thomas, Malcom: William McNichols Gwin
torreyhunter (View posts) Posted: 19 Jan 2000 There was a William McNichols Gwin who lived in Mississippi. We think he was a brother to my ancestor Joseph Gwin. As far as we know, there were only 4 children in the family: Joseph, William, Richmond and a girl whose name I don't know. There could easily have been more children. William and his wife, Sarah Sutton Gwin, are listed in detail in the 1860 Mississippi Census for Lawrence Co., Mississippi. I have listed their children on the web page: http://www.gwingenealogy.net/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/gwintorrey.htm. One of William's descendent's found his will in Issaquena Co., Mississippi, but I have not seen a copy. I am very interested in finding Joseph and William's parents. We have looked for years all over Tennessee and come up empty; do you have any information behind that generation?

"I sleep in Jesus, blessed sleep from which none ever wakes to weep"
From: Lincoln County, Its People by Yvonne McGlothin:
"Colonel William Gwin was born in the state of Tennessee. He moved to Lawrence County, MS (now Lincoln) when only a small boy.
He was first married in the beginning of manhood, and his first wife soon died. He was again married Dec. 30, 1830, to Miss Sarah Sutton. There were born to them 17 children, 5 boys and 12 girls.
Col. Gwin was truly a patriotic citizen, taking a deep interest in all that pertained to the welfare of his country. He filled several offices during his lifetime. He lost two sons in the Civil War;, joined the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, and was baptized about 51 years ago." Also: In 1861 he was elected to the Secession Convention over the brilliant F. T. Cooper.
He is a first cousin of Wm. M[cKendree] Gwin, ex-senator of California who recently died in New York City. His father was a noted Methodist minister and a favorite of General Andrew Jackson.

Torrey Gwin Hunter's NOTES: This information is as accurate as I can make it. There are lots of unanswered questions, and my only source for William M. Gwin's 13 children is the 1860 census.
Stan Gwin sent me this web address - we have corresponded a little because I think his William Gwin (gen. 1) is my Joseph Gwin's brother. This is the same William whose marriage to Susan Sutton on 12/22/1830 is recorded in Bok. 2, Page 70 of the Lawrence County, Mississippi Marriage Records. I couldn't find this in your [John McDonald Gwin's] line but maybe I missed it; since William Sutton Gwin is your grandfather, the Suttons must be in there somewhere. I have not been able to go behind Joseph, but I do have documented information from Joseph forward and would love to participate in the web site if you do think the families are connected.

of 9 Jun 99 is a most interesting addendum!--jmg ]
My attention has only recently turned to a quest for William (the
father--1. above)--for years
we
have
all been trying to find out what happened to Joseph.
The
story
of
that
puzzle
could
fill
three
sheets
of
regular
typing
paper,
single
spaced--in
short,
we
finally
discovered he had been killed
in
the Alamo, but having been in Texas only 7 mos. or
so
before
that unfortunate occurrance, apparently no one knew he had
any
family
to notify. If he had not signed a promissory note in Oct. of
1835
which was included with his administration papers, we might not
ever
have
found him. As it is, the spelling of his last name has
only
recently been corrected on the marker, and his first name is still
wrong
almost everywhere (they have him as James). My husband has
teased
me for years about stopping in every little place in Texas to
inquire
about
Joseph
Gwin.
My advice to the newly initiated--watch out! Genealogy can be addicting! - Torrey
Hi Torrey!
Just stopping in for a minute to say hi! I hope you and all yours are well. Have you been able to find out any more in your Gwin line? It sure looks to me like we're probably related, and someday I sincerely hope we'll find out for sure. : -)
I've found out quite a bit about my
family and have redone my
website.
The starting page is now

Best to you for now--
In Jesus,

Hi - Not much forward progress on this
end. Instead I fear that the
reverse might be true. Diane Hester, a lady from Montana, found
some
Louisiana
research which seems to indicate that my Joseph Gwin and Stan's
William
Gwin are not brothers after all. Instead, William McNichols Gwin
is
probably
a brother to her Malcolm Gwin. Still, one nice thing
has
come
of my mystery - I have gotten to "meet" quite a few really nice
Gwins
via
the internet. Keep in touch - Torrey

Hello all, I'm doing fine. You are more than welcome to post my suspicions or opinions; please (John) delete the two previous emails. I have carbon copied Washington (GWINN's) and Torrey GWIN Hunter in an effort to keep them informed with my speculations. ------------ Some people indicate this Joseph GWIN to be one of the "Defender of the Alamo". I'm not contesting that, .... but I have some speculations as to who he could possibly be. What I'm suggesting is that I believe the Joseph GWIN, who appears on the 1830 Lawrence Co., Mississippi Census (father of Civil War Capt Sylvester GWIN) is the same Joseph GWINN who married Rebecca OWENS (1818) and Rebecca MOBLEY (1829) and is the son of James "Jr." GWINN and Mary "Polly" FROGGE who lived in Cumberland Co., KY after 1811. I believe this to be a logical presumption. Here are some facts and thoughts: 1.) Joseph GWINN,
who
lived in Cumberland & Wayne Co., Kentucky, born
11 Mar 1797, VA
(now WV) who married
Rebecca OWENS in 28
Jul 1818, Wayne Co., KY, had at least four children:
Sarah Jane (b.
1819),
William F. (b. 1820), Joseph L. (b. 1824), Owen P. (b. 1827). According to a book
(Historic Sketches
of Walla Walla, Whitman,
Columbia and Garfield Counties - Washington
Territory by FRANK
T. GILBERT, Portland, Oregon, 1882), Joseph L. GWINN
(b. 1824) states,
"His father went to New Orleans to follow his trade as
a carpenter,
when the subject of this sketch was but four years old
(1828)."
(Basically, he abandoned his first wife in 1828.)
a.) Mrs. Rebecca
(OWENS)
GWINN, as the years rolled by and no tidings came from
her absent
husband, settled on a farm given to her by her father
(Reuben OWENS),
raised her children till they married. Her
children convinced her
to move near Unionville, in Putman Co., Missouri ,
around 1845-1846,
where they lived until 1864, then moved to Walla Walla
Co., WA, until
her death in 1867.
2.) A researcher (Charles Peyton) has informed Beckie Rawdon (another researcher) in her notes, he claims that this Joseph GWINN (b. 1797), in Cumberland & Wayne Co., KENTUCKY, was the son of James "Jr." GWINN (b. 1774) and Mary "Polly" FROGGE (b. 1775). (I agree with Charles Peyton on this.) a.) James "Jr."
GWINN,
was son of James "Sr." GWINN (b.1744) and Nancy
CARLILE (b. 1750),
grandson of Robert GWIN (b.1717/1725) and JeanKINCAID
(b.1720/1724) of
Calf Pasture, Augusta Co. VA. Proven is
that James "Jr."
GWINN's brother Joseph GWINN (b. 1783), married Mary
"Polly"TAYLOR (b.
1786) and their 1st child was named SYLVESTER GWINN
(b.
1805). This makes Joseph (b. 1783) the
uncle of Joseph (b.
1797), andSYLVESTER (b. 1805), a 1st cousin of Joseph
GWINN (b. 1797).
b.) James "Jr." GWINN and Mary "Polly" FROGGE had at least 9 children, "Jesse Blaine GWIN, published that they had 12 children, but I believe that (12) count was a mis-inturpation of the 1820 Cumberland Co., KY census. Jesse should not have counted those engaged in agriculture, but did. c.) One of James "Jr." GWINN and Mary "Polly" FROGGE children, was George (brother of suspected Joseph GWIN). George GWINN married Jane DAVIS and their children were: James M. (ca. 1828), 1-female unknown (ca. 1825/1830), 1-male unknown (1825/1830, suspect my Francis MarionGWINN), John M. (b. 1830), George W. (b. Nov 1832), SYLVESTER L. (b. 1835), Cyrus W. (b. 1837), William R. (b. 1842), Alfred C. (b. 1845), Martha E. (b. 1847), Mary A. (b. 1852). (now we have two brothers, each naming a son SYLVESTER). 3) Monticello,
Lawrence
Co., Mississippi ... is only 160 miles, due north of
New Orleans,
Louisiana.
4) Lawrence County - Mississippi Marriages Records, 1826-1900 Name: JOSEPH GWINN Spouse: REBECCA MOBLEY Marriage Date: 08 Mar 1829 5) Concerning Richmond GWIN, and the 1830, Lawrence Co., MS census of Joseph GWIN (below), Richmond is recorded as one of males age 10-15 years old, which means in 1850 he should've been 30-35, but 1850 census indicates he's 26 years old (below). I believe the 1850 census to be in error. Either way, I do not believe Richmond was a son of Joseph GWIN, a cousin, nephew, or younger brother. I do not think he he was a son of Rebecca MOBLEY. " If " the 1850 census was correct, .... then Rebecca MOBLEY would've been 12-13 years old when she had Richmond, but I believe he was slightly older, which means he definitely would've been even younger, combined with the fact that they (Joseph GWINN and Rebecca MOBLEY) did not marry till 1829. 6) I do not believe the 1830 Lawrence Co., Mississippi, Census is quite true. It indicates that Joseph GWIN was 20-30, and I believe him to be slightly older (33 years old), but since his mother-in-law was living with them (1830), "I believe, it was possibly easier" for them to marry, if everyone thought he was slightly younger. 7) Most importantly "Sylvester GWIN" indicates his father's birth state as "KENTUCKY" on the 1880 Census. -----------------------------------------------

Sheila Gwin
October 24, 2010 Subject: gwin in natchez Lucien, my name is Sheila Gwin, and I live in Laurel. I saw your photo in the 2010 gala for LLT. I did not attend, although I was a longtime member and in the cast of two productions in 1970. Was not aware there was another Gwin here -- I know of an attorney, Lucien Gwin, in Natchez. Are you prehaps related to those Gwins? My cousin, John Gwin, has a family tree posted on the internet. My family line is at www.gwingenealogy.net/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/GwinJamesBassettSr.htm. My father is Dr. J. V. Gwin -- far left in the photo of the link. It would be interesting to see if you fall into one of these lines. But if not, we're still all Gwins. Love to hear from you. Gwin
October 18 Hi, I am related to the Natchez Gwins; my dad and grandfather are both attorneys there. I am the fourth. I have never met any other Gwins, so this is interesting to me. I looked at your family line, but I didn't recognize any names, although I did do it on my phone and wasn't able to see any of the children's names. I know there is a book on my family at one of my relatives in Natchez that might tell us if we were related. My dad would know a lot more about it than I would though. Well, it was nice to hear from you; hope to again soon. Lucien C. Gwin IV |
