05.  Jolene Bell "Jody" Holmes (jodybell58 is her Ancestry DNA handle) has some of these Guinns in her tree, AND she and I are DNA matches through Ancestry.com DNA who predict that she and I are somewhere between fifth and eighth cousins!  That means that in Summer 2020 we have finally made a verifiable connection between my 4g-grandpa Isom/Isham Gwin (who has at least a son and a grandson named Chesley Richard Gwin) and the Chesley Richard Guinn who married Levinia Clay and left behind all these wonderful Arkansas Guinn descendants!

Listed here as Emily, in 1870 as Nancy, and in 1900 as Emmin N., there is no doubt as to her identity in any of the three censuses. In 1900 she reports that 4 of her seven children are still living, which  confirms that the seven children listed here must indeed be all of her children.

This is clearly Emmie N. (Nancy Emily or Emiline), though it was mistranscribed as "Eunice" by Ancestry.com. She reports here that three of her seven children have died, confirming that the seven children listed in 1880 are all of their children--there are no others. Kathryn Guinn reports that John F. and  James R. are two of the three who have died by 1900. The third is still unknown to us.

Subject: William Wiley Guinn - Born in Alabama/Mississippi 25 Dec 1834; Died 4 Sep 1902 Drew County, Arkansas

Dear Mr. Gwin,

I was so excited and thankful to find your website (http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/gwinrichard.htm) last night.  We have been trying to find the ancestors of my husband's great-great-grandfather William Wiley Guinn.  William Wiley Guinn is listed on various census documents as being born in either Alabama or Mississippi. He was born on 25 Dec 1834 and died on 4 Sep 1902 in Drew County, Arkansas (probably Saline Township).

1.  In the 1880 and 1900 censuses he is listed as being born in Mississippi and the place of his parents' birth is listed as unknown.  In 1880 and 1900 he was living in Saline, Drew County, Arkansas.

2.  I believe I found him in the 1860 census in Magnolia, Columbia, Arkansas living as an "overseer" in an attorney's household (Benjamin and Susan Askew - Susan was born in Alabama).  The name on that census was "Wiley Gwin" and he is listed as being born in Mississippi.

3.  I definitely found our William Guinn in the 1870 census listed as "William Grisom?" born in Alabama.  At that point he is with his wife, Nancy Emily [Dunlap] with their young children.  They were in Marion, Drew County, Arkansas.

4.  In 1910, his son William Jefferson Guinn listed William Wiley Guinn as being born in Mississippi.

5.  He died in 1902 and is buried in Monticello, Drew County, Arkansas in the Rough and Ready Cemetery (see: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21079535.)

So, it appears that the only place he is listed as being born in Alabama is the 1870 census.  It seems more likely that he was born in Mississippi.

I found I a Samuel Guinn listed in the 1860 census for Saline, Drew County, Arkansas.  He was 10 years older than my William Wiley Guinn and was listed as being born in Alabama.  His first three children were listed as being born in Mississippi and his next four children were listed as being born in Arkansas.  It made me wonder if he could have been an older brother of my William Wiley Guinn and if that could have been the reason that William Wiley Guinn's family eventually settled in Saline, Arkansas.  I will attach the census documents in case you would like to see them.

Thanks for any help you might be able to give our family!

Kathryn in Virginia

Hi John!

Below is the information I have compiled so far.  We REALLY appreciate all of the help you are giving to us by posting the information at your website!  Those highlighted in yellow and underlined are my husband's ancestors.  The dates, etc. have been obtained from the census documents, findagrave.com, and Lena May [Jordan] Guinn's Bible record.

Thanks again so much!

Kathryn

Subject: Chesley R. Gwinn - William Wiley Gwinn/Guinn

Hi Ms. Ward!

Thank you for posting your Gwinn family history information at http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/gwinnchesleyleviniaclay.htm.  Diane Yarbrough brought the website to my attention.  I have previously posted at John Gwin's pages also at: http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/guinnwilliamwiley.htm (two minor corrections to the info on that page -- my husband is the great-grandson of the William Jefferson Guinn mentioned there).  After Diane brought your webpage to my attention and after doing some researching, I believe that my husband's great-great-grandfather, William Wiley Guinn, was the son of Chesley R. Gwinn and Levinia Clay.  A quick background summary:  my husband's parents died when my husband was very young, and he was adopted and raised by his grandmother, Floy Belle Guinn (her maiden name).  She was the daughter of William Jefferson Guinn (and Lena May Jordan), who was the son of William Wiley Guinn (and Nancy Emily Dunlap).  My husband and I both had numerous conversations with Belle about her parents and grandparents.  Besides that, we have found census documents, etc., for those families.  Here is the info that I have:

1.  William Wiley Guinn at times went by his middle name (spelled various different ways including Wiley and Wylie).

2.  There was a Wiley Gwin in Magnolia, Columbia, Arkansas in 1860, age 26, born in Mississippi, and living in 1860 in the Askew household. Mr. Askew was a "lawyer & farmer" and Wiley Gwin was an "overseer".  I believe this was my William Wiley Guinn.

3.  My William Wiley Guinn and his wife, Nancy Emily [Dunlap] Guinn, were with their family in 1870 in Marion, Drew, Arkansas.  They had three children:  a daughter named "Emiline" (age 2), a son named "John F." (age 1), and a son named "James R." (age 1/12 months).  William Wiley Guinn was listed as William Guinn (the last name appears to read "Grisom"), age 35, born in Alabama.

4.  My William Wiley Guinn and his wife, Nancy Emily [Dunlap] Guinn, were with their family in 1880 in Ouachita Township, Hot Springs, Arkansas.  His name appears as "Wm W. Guinn" with wife "Emily".  They had seven children:  Elminia E. (age 12), John F. (age 11), James R. R. (age 10), Samuel L. (age 8), Susan B. (age 7), "Wm. J." age 5 (this is my husband's ancestor), and Alonzo N. (age 1).  William Wiley Guinn was listed as being age 45 and being born in Mississippi.  (As a side note, I believe their oldest daughter's name might have been "Elvinia" instead of "Elminia" and that her name was a cross between Nancy Emily's mother's name "Elizabeth" and William Wiley's mother's name "Levinia".  Just a theory!)

5.  My William Wiley Guinn and his wife, Nancy Emily [Dunlap] Guinn, were with their son, William Jefferson Guinn, in 1900 in Saline, Drew, Arkansas.  William Wiley Guinn was listed as "Wylie W. Guinn".  He was listed as being born in December 1834 in Mississippi, being married for 35 years (married in about 1865).  His wife is listed as being the mother of 7 children, 4 still living.

6.  I found William Wiley and Nancy Emily [Dunlap] Guinn at findagrave.com with their sons John F. and James R. R. Guinn.  They are buried at Rough and Ready Cemetery in Monticello, Drew Co., Arkansas. Here is the info found there:

W.W. Guinn - b. December 25, 1834 d. September 4, 1902
Nancy Emily Guinn - b. July 3, 1837 d. May 23, 1918
John F. M. Guinn - b. February 12, 1868 d. March 5, 1894 "s/o W.W. & N.E. Guinn"
James R. R. Guinn - b. May 31, 1870 d. December 3, 1891 "s/o W.W. & N.E. Guinn"
Here are the links (for William Wiley and Nancy Emily):

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSsr=41&GScid=56023&GRid=21079527&

7.  When searching for William Wiley Guinn in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, I found a Samuel Guinn, with a wife, Mary, in the 1860 federal census in Saline, Drew, Arkansas (where William Wiley and Nancy Emily [Dunlap] Guinn were in 1900 and probably until the time they died).  This Samuel Guinn was 36 years old (born about 1824).  Both he and his wife, Mary, were listed as being born in Alabama.  Their first three children (Nancy A., Zachariah, and William H.) were listed as being born in Mississippi.  Samuel and Mary's younger four children (Chestley R., Martha L., Josephine, and Francis M.) were listed as being born in Arkansas.  At the time I found this document, I thought that this was possibly an older brother of my William Wiley Guinn.  They both had the Alabama/Mississippi connection, same generation, and they both ended up in Saline, Drew, Arkansas.  After seeing your webpage and the One World Tree for Chesley R. Gwinn and Levinia Clay, I believe that these two Guinn men (Samuel and William Wiley) that ended up in Saline, Drew, Arkansas) were brothers and were the sons of Chesley R. Gwinn and Levinia Clay.

8.  I just located the census document that you mentioned on your webpage for Samuel Gwinn in
1850 in Lauderdale, Mississippi (the son of Chesley and Levinia Gwinn) (page 27 of 60 for "not stated", Lauderdale County).  The surname appears to be "Givan".  However, the family matches that of the Samuel and Mary Guinn family in Saline, Drew, Arkansas.  The children in Lauderdale in 1850 were Nancy, Zachary T., and Henry Clay.  Plus, the Samuel Guinn family in 1860 in Saline had the son Chestley R. Guinn, which was probably a misspelling of Chesley R. Guinn.  Samuel probably was naming that son after Samuel's father.

9.  In 1850, two pages after the record for Samuel Gwinn in Lauderdale, Mississippi, I believe my William Wiley Guinn is listed at the top of the page (page 29 of 60).  His older sister Elizabeth is the last name listed on the previous page (page 28 of 60).  They are living next door and near the Clay families (Levinia Clay Gwinn's siblings).  William's name appears as "Wm Wayne".  His sister's last name appears to read Gwin or Guin.

10.  There are also IRS tax documents at ancestry.com for a Chesley R. Gwin (1865, Athens [possibly Selma area], Alabama), C. R. Gwinn (1868, Hot Springs, Arkansas), and C. R. Gwinn (1869, Hot Springs, Arkansas).  I wonder if this was Chesley and Levinia's son Chesley?  There was also a military listing for Confederate Civil War Soldiers for a C. R. Guinn with the alternate name of Richard C. Guinn from Arkansas.  I wonder if that could be the son of Chesley and Levinia?  There are other Chesley Gwins listed from Alabama in the Confederate Civil War soldiers listings.

11.  There is a pension record listed for William Wiley Guinn (listed as Wylie W. Guinn) at http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=aebf95a2af&view=att&th=1239d070d17399c3&attid=0.6&disp=inline&zw.  (Thank you so much to Diane Yarbrough for finding that document!)

Well, I had better stop here before this email gets way too long!  If you are interested in information about William Jefferson Guinn's family (son of William Wiley Guinn), please let me know.  I will try to attach some of the documents I mentioned above.

Thanks!

Kathryn

P.S.  I will copy this email to John Gwin, Rita Litchfield, and Diane Yarbrough.

1.  Diane Yarbrough contacted us in October 2009 to contribute this information. She believes--as do I--that online exposure of family information in a format such as this makes that data much more available to other family members and allows them to contact us more readily.  She has now--Spring 2011--shared the fruit of her ongoing research; she believes she may have discovered who Arminta's father is.

2.  The various census documents available through Ancestry.com

3.  Jody Bell (jodybell58) has some of these Guinns in her tree, AND she and I are DNA matches through Ancestry.com DNA who predict that we are somewhere between fifth and eighth cousins!  That means that we have finally made a connection between my 4g-grandpa Isom/Isham Gwin and Chesley Richard Guinn who married Levinia Clay and left behind all these Arkansas Guinns!

Diane Yarbrough says that Arminta's parents were b. in Mississippi, according to the 1880 census. Since young Arminta and her brothers are here in AR with Anna Turkenett who was also b. in MS, might we speculate that Anna is Arminta's maternal aunt, nee Gwin, and perhaps war widow of Mr. Turkenett/Tarkenett?

The 1870 census shows that all over the South, families who were able to do so were taking in war orphans and widows in large quantities. (E.g., see my own gg-grandfather, William Gwin, in 1870.) Further, these expanded families were pooling their resources to survive the economic devastation in the War's
and Reconstruction's wake. Might we then further speculate that this Lemon Monk, 14, and who we also speculate to be Lemon's brother, William, 7, living next door in household 99, are such war orphans?

Diane thinks this is Arminta's brother James. Granted, he has the right age and POB; nevertheless, it seems to me that this is inconclusive, especially since there is so much distance between Van Buren and Cleveland counties. I think for now that we should be more tentative in calling this our James.

(1) on 31 July 1875, Thomas J. Green and John W. Corden (or Corder) bound themselves in the amount of $100 to Dorsey Co., AR, if Thomas failed to marry Mittie Gwyn within 60 days;
(2) on 31 July 1875, the county clerk of Dorsey Co., AR, commanded that Thos. J. Green, 25, and Mittie Gwyn, 18, be married by anyone authorized to do so;
(3) on 8 Aug 1875, Laban F. Oaks, Justice of the Peace of Dorsey Co., AR, lawfully married them, and
(4) on 11 Sep 1875, the  Dorsey Co. Circuit Court clerk filed the above license and certificate in Marriage Records Book One, page 11.

Subject: Gwin:  "As-of-Yet UnRelated Family"  Armita Jane Gwynn Green

Mr. Gwin,

I have run across your webpage "
As-of-Yet UnRelated Family."  May I contribute what little information I have regarding my gg-grandmother and her two brothers to this page?  They are Gwynns.  Of course this is the spelling my family recognizes, but the surname has been spelled several ways.  I believe that these siblings were abandoned, so who really knows the correct spelling of the name.

I can supply the few censuses that I have from Arkansas and Armita's marriage record.  Over the past six months, I have recruited help from several Gwin, Gwyn, Guin researchers and have yet to have any progress.  My hope is that by adding my information to your website page that someone will recognize my branch of the family.  After looking at your webpage, I think, through wild speculation of my own, there might be a connection with William Wiley Guinn.  William and Armita were living in adjacent counties and buried only 30 miles from each other.

I have only been able to track my gg-grandmother Armita Jane (Arminta Ann, nickname Mittie) back to an 1870 census (see above) which shows she and her brothers were born in Texas.  An 1880 census shows both her parents were born in Mississippi.  Armita and her two older brothers, James and David, show up in Arkansas in 1870 living in the Turkenett household.  I have no clue as to the names of Armita's parents.  By 1880 Armita is married, and her two brothers go their separate ways.

If adding may family information is amenable with you, please let me know in what type of format you would like to have the information.

(I have attached a photo of her just for kicks.  There is not much resemblance at all.)

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

John,

Thank you so much for agreeing to add my family information.  I do believe that there will be a greater access and response through your website than through a typical message board.

I have included a copy of her marriage license and a screen print of my collected data for Armita and Thomas.        Married:  31 July 1875 Rest, Dorsey Co. (Now Cleveland Co.), Arkansas  She is listed as Mittie Gwyn.

Your entries look great!  If anything, please correct, in the 1870 census, the spelling of Minta to Arminta and note that her nickname was Mittie.  You may also want to include the census information regarding her brother James from 1880 as listed below:

12 June 1880 Van Buren County, Arkansas, Sugar Loaf
148/150
Jinkins, J. B. W M 55 Married Farmer NC/NC/NC
Clemintine W F 50 M Keeping House Wife NC/NC/NC
Gwin, James M W 28 Single Hired Farm Laborer TX (No listing for parents' birth)

I am sending you a second e-mail following this one.  It contains my speculated account of William Wiley's and Armita's connection.  This account is the same information I have sent out to other Gwin researchers.  Just thought you might get a kick out of reading what my imagination can do.

Thanks again!!!  Your help is truly appreciated.

Diane Yarbrough

Following is Diane's theory as to how William Wylie Guinn is related to her gg-grandmother, Arminta (Gwin) Green.
To remind us all that this theory is based on sheer speculation rather than on fact, I had reduced it several times.
This was so that no one would read the theory (without reading this disclaimer first) and assume it to be true.
Nevertheless, her theory is very plausible due to the fact that all the dates and places are aligned.
So before you copy this and paste it to a text document as if it were true, remember: it's

Below is the correspondence which I have been sharing with other Gwin researchers.  You may or may not be interested in reading this, but I thought you might get a kick out of it.  Just remember, that I am piecing information and dates together purely by SPECULATION.  But the dates fit and the story is plausible.  (It may not be a great idea to publish this information on the website.  I am stretching my imagination to put a story together.)
I don't want to get too excited, but I found William W. Guinn in Arkansas, and, yes, the dates fit, IF Emily is his second wife.  I could still be wrong and do not have any concrete evidence on which to base my speculation that William could have had another wife other than Emily.  But you never know.  One has to start looking outside of the box when one hits a brick wall.
Check out the attachment I made showing the counties that William and Armita lived in.  The starred area in Lincoln county is where Armita lived in the later years of her adult life.  The starred area in Drew county is where William Wylie Guinn is in 1900 when he is about 66.  (There are approximately 30 miles between Star City, Lincoln Co., and Wilmar, Drew Co. where each are respectively buried.)  If there is truly a connection between William and Armita, they have been dancing around each other throughout the years in neighboring counties.  Could William have been keeping an "eye out" for his kids?  William also had two older brothers who migrated to Arkansas, Chesley living in Hot Springs and Sam in Drew County.

(I have also added census information below to help support my family history.)

Okay............William is born in Alabama in 1834 and orphaned at age one.  His grandfather Samuel, who lived in Mississippi, took custody of him until his death in 1848 when William was 14.

Let's say that William and wife #1 got married in Mississippi when he was about 17.  William and wife #1 moved to Texas by 1851 and had their first child James by 1852.  Daniel/David is born in 1854, TX and was followed by Armita in 1857, TX.  Does wife #1 have a fourth child and die in childbirth in 1858 - 1860? (I am not able to find any TX census to show their time in Texas. Possibly moved there in 1851 and moved out in 1859?)

From reading other researcher's accounts of W. W. Gwinn, they show that William's siblings were living in Mississippi, Texas, and Arkansas.  I remember reading that two of his brothers were living in Arkansas (Hot Springs Co. & Drew Co.) and that another family member was working in Cherokee Co., Texas.  Other references were made to Rusk and Panola counties in Texas also.

William picked up his kids and moved to Arkansas, say by 1860.  As a widower, he had three children under 10.  The two boys are "deaf or dumb, blind, insane or idiotic" as listed in the 1870 census.  From the same 1870 census, the three children were living with Anna Turkenette (no relation that I know of) in Jefferson Co., AR.  I also noticed that there were others listed in this classification on the same census page.  Was this possibly a community of people with the same "afflictions"?  You would tend to think if the boys were "farm hands" that they were somewhat functional.  (There are "deaf mutes" in my father's generation from that branch.)  Did William leave Armita with her brothers to "sweeten the pot" so that Anna Turkenette would take the lot?

William Wylie Guinn finds a job in Columbia Co, AR, in 1860 with no wife or children as shown in the 1860 census.  He was living with the Askews and was working as an overseer for them.  (Columbia Co. is on the southwestern border of TX and AR.)  He could have passed through Columbia Co. and found a job, taken the kids up to Jefferson Co., and returned to earn a living in Columbia Co.)

Then comes the war from 1861 to 1865 where he served as a private in the 6th regiment company K, Arkansas infantry, enlisting in Desha Co., AR. (Desha Co. is adjacent to Drew Co. and Jefferson Co. in 1860.)

After the war William met Emily and decided to start fresh with a new family. At  the time William married Emily in 1865 (Drew Co.), James was 13, Daniel/David 11, and Armita 9.  What also leads me to believe that this may have been William's second marriage is due to the age at which they were married.  William (age 33) and Emily (age 32) had their first child in 1868 in AR.

William and Emily are living in Ouachitah Township, Hot Springs Co., by 1880 with seven additional children.  William is still with Emily in 1900 and living in Drew Co. along with their son William J. who is 25.  William is buried in the Rough and Ready Cemetery in Monticello, Drew Co.

James Gwin, Armita's brother, shows up in Sugar Loaf, Van Buren Co., Arkansas in 1880.

FYI:  In 1870 Jefferson, Arkansas, Drew, and Desha counties were all adjacent to one another.  Sometime between 1870 and 1880 two new counties were added right smack dab in the middle of those counties: Lincoln and Dorsey (now Cleveland).  Lincoln became the central county.

Looking for parents and/or family of Armita Jane, David and James Gwynn.

Armita, nickname Mittie, is my gg grandmother. She has also been referred to as Armedda, Armidda, Arminta, Arminda, Annittie, etc.  Arminta's last name, as everyone is well aware, is spelled many different ways, too. The family name has been spelled most often as Gwin in the few censuses I have found for Armita and James. Mother and Father are said to be from Mississippi. Armita and her brothers are said to have been born in Texas, and they later show up in Arkansas in an 1870 census.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated!
See below for census information.

[John M. Gwin Note: Today a relative, "Ann Animas", contacted us with the names of these parents of Wiley P. Guinn and with information about a Genforum posting which further provided Henry's father as a Charles Guinn. Anyone wishing to contact this anonymous cousin may do so through me. ]

In June 2009, a relative who wishes to remain anonymous has provided data concerning eleven ancestors of Wiley Preston Guinn! To contact this relative, please email me.

John,

Would you forward the following information regarding Wiley Preston Guinn's sibling Reuben D. Guinn?

By the way...I have been able to obtain a copy of Armita's death certificate since we last corresponded.  (See attached.)  Feel free to add it to the website of "As Yet Un-Related Gwins" for Armita Jane Gwynn Green.  She was hiding under the name of Annittie Green.

Thank you!

Diane Yarbrough

Ann,

I am looking for my gg grandmother's parents.  I may have found a lead to Armita's father.  Would you share any information you might have regarding Reuben, Wiley Preston Guinn's sibling?  If this is the Guinn I am looking for, he would have been born in Alabama, married his first wife in Alabama, moved to Mississippi and then lands to Texas widowed with four children in 1847.

If Reuben is my ggg grandfather, he would have married for a second time around 1850 and had three more children by 1857.  Because I can not find him in an 1870 census, I speculate that he served in the confederacy and died in the the war.  His three children were born in Texas and show up in Arkansas in 1870 in the residence of Anna Turkenette.  (See supporting 1870 census below.)

Any clues or confirmations would be greatly appreciated,

Here is a Reuben D. Guinn:

Armita's first child was named Reuben.
The middle initial D. From Armita's death certificate, it lists her father's name as Daniel or David. (See attached certificate.)
Although he and his 1st child were born in Alabama, his 2nd and 3rd child were born in Mississippi.
His 4th child was born in Texas circa 1848.
Documented arrival in Navarro Co, Texas 1847, Reuben D. Guinn.
In 1850 census there is no wife/mother listed.  Widowed?  (See attached census.)
Navarro Co., TX land survey abstract Reuben Guinn 19 July 1854.
Had a younger brother named James.
IF...... Reuben D. re-married sometime between 1850 - 1852, could the following children in the census below have been Armita's 1/2 siblings?
(James 1852, Daniel/David 1854, Armita 1857)

I did find a Guinn listed in the Confederate Indigent Families Lists of Texas 1863 - 1865.  There were many Guinns in this area.  I have yet to confirm that the listing below is Reuben.

Subject: Armitta Jane Guinn Green & Reuben D. Guinn

Hi John!

It has been a long while since we have corresponded.  I think I have found Armitta's father!  Just wanted to get your take on this.  Thanks for your help and insight.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Diane Yarbrough
Dallas, Texas

I have been researching Reuben Davis Guinn.

I have reason to believe that he is my ggg grandfather if he married a 2nd time, but have yet to make a concrete connection between him and Armitta Jane Guinn.

I have gathered a bit of information about his first wife, Emeline Harris Guinn, and their six children.  Reuben was born in Alabama.  Emeline was born in Mississippi.  Reuben and Emeline were married in Alabama.  They had six children, one born in Alabama, three in Mississippi, and two in Texas.  Emeline died in 1850 in Navarro, Texas, from puerperal fever, ten days after giving birth to their son Wiley D. Guinn in Feb 1850.

Knowing that Reuben's smaller children were parceled off to the Harris family members in Texas, the older children were placed on other neighboring farms, and that Reuben was 36 at the time of her death, I am thinking (hoping) that he married a 2nd time and started another family in Texas during the 1850's.

Here is what I know:

(Attached is a study of Reuben's family names; sibling chart.  The names in red are those which repeat between the generations.)

Before the war Reuben was in Texas, and then I find an R. Guinn reporting to the Pine Bluff, AR, tax officials after the war, approximately 20 miles from Bartholomew Township, Jefferson County, where Armitta, James and David are living in 1870 with Anna Turkenette.  I don't know where he is during the war.  He turned 50 in 1864, so he most likely did not serve.  He was a wheel wright and wagon maker and associated with blacksmiths.  So he could have worked for the war effort. I have found a Reuben Goen, confederate, 8th Regiment, Texas Infantry (Hobby's) Company H, Private.  I am currently checking this piece of information out with other Civil War buffs.

In the 1866 Arkansas Districts two and three of the US tax assessment, there is a W. B. Green listed next to an R. Guinn.  Thomas Jefferson Green, Armitta's husband, grew up in W P Green's household his entire life until he married Armitta.  Is this where the Greens and the Guinns get introduced?

The 1870 census below (which I have already shared with you) is my oldest data I have for Armitta.  In later censuses she stated that her parents were born in Mississippi.  Knowing that Reuben lived for a period of time in Mississippi before coming to Texas, maybe this was the only information Armitta would have had about her parents.

As for Anna Turkenette, I have yet to make a connection, but there are Turknettes and Monks living in the adjacent counties to Navarro and Ellis counties were Reuben purchased property.  (See attached maps.)

Reuben Davis Guinn:  has property in Navarro Co. and Ellis Co., TX
Charles Guinn (younger brother):  has property in Collin Co., TX
Wiley Preston Guinn (younger brother):  has property in Cooke Co., TX
These counties are satellites of Dallas.

Armitta named:
her first child Reuben Ebenezer (After her father?)
her second child Wesley (after her uncle John Wesley, Reuben's brother?)
her third child John Buck (after her uncle John Wesley, Reuben's brother?)

Hey John!

Just thought that I would share an update on Reuben Davis Guinn.

Don't you just hate it when the FACTS get in the way?  Well, Reuben Davis Guinn is not my ggg grandfather.  Armitta and her brothers were born during the 1850s.

I recently found listings of Rueben's probate records and documentation from his administrator Lorenzo Dow Powell (Reuben's brother-in-law). I sent off for several listings from the County of Navarro and was so excited when they arrived only to find out that Reuben died in testate on 05 Nov 1850 in Navarro County, Texas.  (Navarro Texas Probate Records; Term 1850 Book C, pp. 346 - 348)

Reuben died approximate nine months after his wife Emaline (Emily) B. Harris Guinn died from puerperal fever.  He left six children behind possibly a seventh according to the 1840 Chickasaw County, Mississippi census.
I still think that I am close to the right family.  I am going to see if I can find that child that was born between 1832 - 1835 listed on the 1840 census.  If Armitta's oldest sibling was born in 1852 it is a possibility that this seventh child could be her father.  The R D Guinn that I find the the 1866 Tax Collections below in an earlier e-mail to you could possibly be this child.  R D Guinn Jr.??????

Well.........Happy Hunting to me!!!!!!

Hope all is going well with you!
Thanks for your continued interest.  Will keep in touch.

Diane

Diane,

Here's a better idea, I think:  I've placed them at the bottom of the page as an appendix to which I can link any data we wish later.

Nothing is online yet--I'll upload everything at once when they're all in place.

Hi Diane--I got these lovely jpegs and am screening them carefully to see just which ones will fit where on the page.  THANK you!

As always, please check the page from time to time (http://www.gwingenealogy.net/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/guinnwilliamwiley.htm) to proofread and make sure I haven't erred with your work.

Diane,
Yes, I got it.
I looked for it earlier as well (on Mar 24), and there it was also--opened but unanswered.  I have no idea what I did with it then, so please accept my apologies in my ignorance.  I have to go in a moment, so no time now to study it.  If you do not hear from me in two days, please write again!
Hopefully I'll talk to you tomorrow on this.
John

Hey John,

I just had not heard a response to this e-mail I sent to you last March.  I fully understand that this has to come second and other things in life may have pulled you away.  But I am so anxious to hear from you.  So I am re-sending the e-mail with an updated attachment.
(I removed the old sibling chart from the previous e-mail and attached the new one.)

(If you would, shoot me a quick e-mail just to let me know that you got this.)

Hi John!

It has been a long while since we have corresponded.  I think I have found Armitta's father!  Just wanted to get your take on this and get any kind of pointers from you on how to research further from here.

Thanks for your help and insight.  Let me know if you have any quesitons,

Diane Yarbrough

I have been researching Reuben Davis Guinn.  I have reason to believe that he is my ggg grandfather if he married a 2nd time, but have yet to make a concrete connection between him and Armitta Jane Guinn.

I have gathered a bit of information about his first wife Emeline Harris Guinn and their six children.  Reuben was born in Alabama.  Emeline was born in Mississippi.  Reuben and Emeline was married in Alabama.  They had six children.  One born in Alabama, three in Mississippi and two in Texas.  Emeline died in 1850 in Navarro, Texas from puerperal fever, ten days after giving birth to their son Wiley D. Guinn in Feb 1850.  Knowing that Reuben's smaller children were parceled off to the Harris family members in Texas, the older children we placed on other neighboring farms and that Reuben was 36 at the time of her death, I am thinking (hoping) that he married a 2nd time and started another family in Texas during the 1850's.

Here is what I know:

(Attached is a study of Rueben's family names; sibling chart.  The names in red are those which repeat between the generations.)

Before the war Reuben was in Texas and then I find a R Guinn reporting to the Pine Bluff, AR tax officials after the war; approximately 20 miles from Bartholowmew Township, Jefferson County where Armitta, James and David are living in 1870 with Anna Turkenette.

In the 1866, Arkansas Districts two and three, of the US tax assessment, there is a W B Green listed next to a R Guinn.  Thomas Jefferson Green, Armitta's husband, grew up in W P Green's household his entire life until he married Armitta.  Is this where the Greens and the Guinns get introduced?

The 1870 census below (which I have already shared with you) is my oldest data I have for Armitta.  In later census she stated that her parents were born in Mississippi.  Knowing that Reuben lived for a period of time in Mississippi before coming to Texas, maybe the only information Armitta would have had about her parents.

TIME LINE (I have saved several documents in PDF form supporting the information in this time line.)
