We are looking for information on George Holmes Gwin(b.
1-1-1819--d. 10-19-1905) in regard to prior descendants.
We think his father might be John Gwin,
born around 1755-1760 but we have no accurate
information.
Any information on this Gwin family would be
greatly appreciated. -Have had some messages from Joyce
Hornback but we have not matched anyone as yet. Thank
you very much.

Ruth,
Believe that the George Holmes Gwin family was
part of the following:
Edmund Gwin, Pittsylvania Co VA, had a son named
George Holmes Gwin. George Holmes Gwin left a
will that was probated in 1796 in Pittsylvania Co., VA,
and names the following children:
1. Mary Gwin,
2. Nancy Gwin,
3. Elizabeth Gwin,
4. John Gwin; moved to Harrison Co., IN,
in 1802 or 1803.
5. Jesse Gwin,
6. Holmes Gwin,
7. Thomas Gwin, b. Pittsylvania Co., VA; d.
White Co., IN.
Is this the correct family?

Paula, What I found was that George Holmes Gwin
had a son named John Gwin b. 1755-60 who moved
to Harrison Co., IN in 1802 or 1803. No wife is given.
Children listed:
1. James Gwin
2. George Gwin
3. Edmund Gwin, b. 1785 in Pittsylvania Co VA m 1812 to
.......Harbison of Danville, VA
4. Edmund Gwin II
5. John Gwin (Jr.)
6. Holmes Gwin
This is from the book "The History of the Gwin Family" by
Jesse Blaine Gwin. His ref: "Americans of Gentle Birth"
Pittman, Vol 1, p. 228 Vol. 2, p. 134 But I must also tell
you that the book "Americans of Gentle Birth" does have a
great deal of mistakes. It could well be that child
#2 George Gwin and child #6 Holmes Gwin was one and the
same person.

Joyce: I do not believe we are related either to the
families listed above as subject. However, your earlier
message to me was interesting on the George Holmes
Gwin family. My husband is wondering if John
Gwin that moved to Harrison Co., IN, in 1802 or
1803 might have a son George Holmes Gwin (b.
1-1-1819; (born in Harrison Co., IN--d. 10-19-1905 in
Brookston, IN) and he would be my husband's
great-grandfather. If the son could be George Holmes
Gwin, he married Elizabeth Ann (Lamb). Thanks
for the info, we have nothing on any earlier
generations.

Joyce , how are you related to Elizabeth Ann Gwyn
who married Rev. James Jenkins? Also, how are
you related to Sarah Ransome married to Capt.
Richard Gwyn (Jr.)? I'm trying to find out when
the Ransome/Gwyn line married into the Blanton family.
Thomas Blanton and his wife Jane McGuffy were married
1682 in VA. Their original lands were near the
Rappahonnack River in K & Q Co. Also looking for
association with the Starke/Wyatt families. Family names
in Blanton Bible are Ransome Gwyn Blanton and Wyatt
Starke Blanton. The names are spelled correctly. Any
help you might give would be appreciated. Paula

Hi Paula,
Capt Richard Gwyn was born in 1738 in Gloucester
Co., VA, and died in 1777 Wilkes Co., NC.
He was the son of Hugh M. Gwyn and his 1st
wife Peyton Humphrey. Hugh M. Gwyn was born in
1702 and died in 1768. He lived on Gwyn's Island at
"Gwynville" where he served 42 years on the vestry of
Kingston Parish, Mathew Co., VA. Hugh and Peyton had
three children:
1. Capt Richard Gwyn 2. Walter Gwyn 3. Sarah Gwyn
Hugh M. Gwyn married 2nd Lucy Reade who died 15
Jul 1772 in Kingston Parish, Gloucestor Co., VA. Hugh and
Lucy were the parents of three children:
1. Frances Gwyn 2. James Gwyn who never married 3. John Gwyn who never married.
I am a Gwin, and my family was not part of the Hugh Gwyn
family. My Ancestor was Mordecai Gwin of
Orange Co., NC, but I did a lot of research on that VA
family before I found out.

Paula, Elizabeth Ann Gwyn, b. 1779, d. 1842, mar. Rev.
James Jenkins (b. 1764; d. 1847). He was from
Camden, SC. Elizabeth Ann Gwyn was the dau. of Capt.
Richard Gwyn and his wife Sarah Ramsome. In 1775, the
Gwyns moved to the Yadkin Valley, Wilkes Co., NC, &
settled at "Green Hill". The name Ramsone was used in
the family several times.
Hope that this helps.

Elizabeth Ann GWYN Blanton, b. 6 JAN 1818
Martha Smith Blanton, b. 1 MAY 1820
Marriage and Death and migration info available.
William and Elizabeth Blanton were devout Methodists
who built churches. They were best friends and next-door
neighbors of the Rev. James Jenkins and Elizabeth Ann
Gwyn in Camden/Wateree Kershaw Co., SC. I have
documented all Bible info up to the marriage. I need to
know place of marriage and information on their familes.
How were the Gwyns related to the Jenkins, just by
Elizabeth Ann's marriage? How about the Blantons? Also
how are the Blantons involved with the Gwyns, through
Richard Ransome Gwyn? The early Blantons, Thomas and
Jane McGuffy Blanton, were married in 1680 VA. Original
land grants were in Essex/Caroline Co.s. Other early
associations were Long, Little, Young, Ware, Starke.
Looking for WARE/Wyatt or Ware/Gwyn or Gwyn/Wyatt/Starke
tc marriages.
Blantons also migrated to Harris Co GA and built
churches there. Would be interested in any Methodist
information you might have concerning these families.

Holmes Gwin by Ruth (Glick) White 352 of 423 Go
Great-great-great-great:
According to a Family history, Col. Edmund Gwin owned a ship taken by
the Continental Govt. during the Revolutionary War.
This is very doubtful. His son, George Homes Gwin, had one or more sons in
the war and died in 1796. There were other Edmund Gwins in Va. at the time.
Great-great-great:
George Homes (Holmes) Gwin
was a plantation owner on the Sandy River near
Dansville, Va. There are one hundred or more court
cases documented in the court records at Chatham, Va.
plus a very interesting will dated 1796. The court
cases included bad debts, trespassing, assault &
battery, fornication, and accused of harbouring his
son John who was a deserter from the Revolutionary
War. Jesse Gwin and
maybe another brother apparently were in that war. In
the 1790 census George Homes Gwinn
was listed as head of the household_----ten whites
nine blacks.
Around 1800 the Sons began selling their lands on the
Sandy River. Deeds amounting to about 2000 acres are
recorded at Ghatham, Va. George Homes Gwin had four daughters and
seven sons for a total of eleven children. Nancy
Arrington was his wife but a woman named Elizabeth was
mentioned in his will.
Great-great:
Thomas Gwin and his
nephew John married Mildred Bates and Winifred Bates,
daughters of James Bates and Betsy Vaughn. Betsy
Vaughn or her mother is thought to be a first cousin
of Jane Randolph, mother Of Thomas Jefferson.
Thomas and his nephew John moved to IN about 1811.
John's father John, brother of Thomas, might have
moved to IN around 1802, but the records in Corydon
started in 1809. They both purchased land near
Lanesville, IN, in 1815. I haven't checked land grant
records in Floyd County where they may have lived
first. Thomas Gwin was apparently a school teacher and
the father of three daughters and eight sons for a
total of eleven children. He, his sons, and his nephew
and sons owned considerable amounts of land in and
around Lanesville. Four of his sons, Thomas Jefferson
Gwin, Berry Gwin, James Jackson Gwin and George Holmes Gwin all voluntered in June
1846 for the Mexican War with the 2nd Indiana Regiment
and were apparently at the battle of Buena Vista. All
survived and were mustered out June 1847. He died
2/1835, Mildred died 2/1859.
Great:
George Holmes Gwin,
after the Mexican War, petitioned the people of
Lanesville (150+) to get an alcohol license. The bar
in Lanesville is now called the Circle Bar. He sold
the bar and other land around Lanesville in the early
1850s and moved to Brookston, In. He later became a
captain in the Civil War on the Union side. His family
consisted of six daughters and five sons for a total
of eleven children. He died 10/19/1905;
Elizabeth died 2/14/1896.
2
Grandfather:
Charles Holmes Gwin
moved from Brookston, in to a farm in Kosciusko County
one mile south of Nappanee when my father was sixteen
years old. There were three daughters and four sons in
his family. They moved in 1903. He died 4/20/1938, Lu
Alla died 1/27/1937.
Father:
Wilyard Holmes Gwin, my father, was a farmer
first, last, and always and raised six children listed
below; he died 3/2/1979; my mother, Mary Ann McGowen,
died 8/31/1957.

George
Holmes Gwin, the
one from Pittsylvania Co., VA
(earlier known as Halifax, Lunenburg
and Brunswick Counties) was my
ancestor via the
Fallen/Falling/Fallin/Fallon line.
I am related to Elizabeth Gwin
who married Redmond Fallin (Redmond
was born about 1775 in or near
Danville, Virginia).
They had one son (among
others) who is my ancestor: Littleberry
Falling/Fallen/Fallin who married
Ann E. Townes and moved to
Maury Co., TN, prior to 1840.
They had a son named Edward
Townes Fallin/Fallen.
Ed had moved to Arkansas by
the start of the Civil War and was a
veteran (Confederate) of the 32nd
Arkansas Infantry and later was in
the 45th Arkansas Confederate
Cavalry. He was a
prisoner of war in 1865 and released
(paroled) at Jacksonport, Jackson
Co., AR.
Ed Fallin married Julia Lou
Simmons in 1866, and one of their
sons was George
Minor Fallin, Sr.,
who married Clara Johnson in 1916.
They had one son named George Minor
Fallin, Jr., who is
my grandfather, born 1921 in Clay
Co., AR, near the Missouri line. G.
M. Fallin, Jr., passed away in 1985.
He was an aviation mechanic and
machinist mainly for McDonnell
Douglas and/or their subsidiaries
and also had done some work on the
construction of the St Louis
Missouri Gateway Arch.
I grew up in
Missouri with frequent visits to
Arkansas, and I now live in New
Mexico (USA--the state, not the
country! hmmphh!) I have a few
more details, but that's it for now.

My
best guess at the
spelling and
mispronunciation of
this given name,
Jesse, is based on
the old-style
double-ess. The

transcribed below,
must've heard
Jeffrey (spelled
here Jefrey), not
Jesse. We'll
see which is
right--I'm tending

[John M. Gwin NOTE: This
gap is explained by James' military
service, and evidently Harriet is
the celebration child of his return
a year later, after which I predict
that his wife dies and James works
at raising his children on his own,
explaining the six-year gap between
Harriet and James P.; James P.,
then, would be the son of James and
his second wife, America.]

(II?), b. 1
Jan 1819; d. 19 Oct 1905; bd. IOOF
Cem., Brookston, White Co., IN; m. ca.
1843 to Elizabeth Ann Lamb
(b. ca. 1823 in IN; d. 14 Feb 1896;
bd. IOOF Cem., Brookston, White Co.,
IN); volunteered Jun 1846 for the Mex.
War, 2nd IN Regt.; apparently was at
battle of Buena Vista; mustered out
Jun 1847; Capt., USA, Civ. War; lived in
Brookston, White Co., IN; 6
daus., 5 sons;
Born January 1st,
1819, in Lanesville,
Harrison county,
Indiana. At the age of
eighteen years learned
the trade of a
blacksmith, which he
followed for eighteen
years in Lanesville,
moving to White county,
Indiana, in November,
1854, where he engaged
in farming. He went to
Mexico as a soldier in
the 2nd Indiana
Volunteers, commanded by
Colonel Bowles. He
served twelve months and
was appointed corporal.
In 1857 he was appointed
first lieutenant in the
Indiana Militia by
Governor Joseph A.
Wright. He assisted in
organizing Company F in
August, 1862, of which
he was commissioned
Captain, in which
position he served over
two years. When the time
came for the march to
the sea he was deemed by
the Colonel as unable to
make the march, and so
on November 8, 1864, he
resigned and returned to
his home in Brookston,
White county,
where he still resides.
Captain Gwin is the
oldest survivor of the
regiment, having passed
the four score years,
and recalls the old days
with pleasure when he
was Captain of "Gwin's
Rangers." His portrait
shows him as full of
vigor yet. A portrait
taken in the army will
be found on another
page.

Not my family line, just sharing.
From the book "HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY, COUNTIES OF
WHITE AND PULASKI INDIANA. Historical and
Biographical. Illustrated. Chicago; F. A. Battey
& CO., Publishers. 1883."
page 382, Big Creek Township, White County, Indiana.
"JOSEPH W. STEWART, County Sheriff, was born
November 3, 1839, in Henry Co., KY, and is one of 12
children, only three of whom are yet living, born to
HIRAM and LUCY (CHILTON) STEWART, both natives of
Kentucky, and of Scotch and English descent. JOHN
STEWART, the father of HIRAM, was a soldier in the
War of 1812. HIRAM and his family came to Indiana in
1845, and located in Tippecanoe County, just across
the line from Prairie Township, this county (White
County). In November, 1847, MRS. STEWART died of
consumption; in 1850, HIRAM and his family moved
into this county, engaged in farming, and here died
in July, 1866. JOSEPH W. STEWART was reared to
farming, and principally in Indiana. He was married,
February 5, 1863, to MISS MARY A. GWIN, daughter of
CAPTAIN GEORGE H. GWIN, of Prairie Township, and to
this union has been born one child - ADDIE. MR.
STEWART continued farming in Prairie Township, where
he yet owns 120 acres, until his election to the
office of Sheriff in 1882, when he moved to
Monticello. He is a Democrat, and both he and wife
are members of the Free-Will Baptist Church."

Ross,
I am helping a cousin track down her roots, and they
seem to conntect to your roots. This is what we
have: Elizabeth Gwin married Richard
Douglas Lilly on September 13, 1827 in
Harrison County, Indiana. We believe her mother
could have been Milly Gwin that we found in the
census September 10 1850 District 45 Harrison
County, Indiana dwelling 656, Widowed age 70 born in
Va.
Is this the Mildred you talk about in your posting?
Did she have a daughter Elizabeth?
Hope to hear from you,

Article in "Bates Booster" newsletter No. 179,

The Bates brides were daughters of Samuel &

Hi Ruth,
I tried to email you, but it bounced back.
I think that George H. Gwin is probably a son of
Thomas Gwin and Mildred (Bates) Gwin. George married
Elizabeth Ann Lamb 11/10/1842 in Harrison County, IN.
The marriage was performed by Robert B. Pennington,
who was a J.P. in Lanesville, Franklin Township. In
1860, after moving to White County, he was living next
to a James Gwin, who has, among others, a son, David
M. Gwin, who was born about 1838. There is a death
record for this David M. Gwin from Battle Ground,
Tippecanoe Co., IN. He died on 10 Oct. 1913 at age
75y, 9m, 20d, and was buried in Battle Ground
Cemetery. His parents were given as James Gwin and
Nancy Harbeson. There is a marriage record for James
Gwin and Nancy Harbison in Harrison Co., IN on March
22, 1837. There is a marriage affidavit attesting that
his mother, Mildred Gwin, gave her consent to the
marriage. It is very likely that your George is a
brother to this James. Thomas Gwin, the husband of
Mildred, is a son of George Holmes Gwin, who died in
Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1796. Thomas came to Harrison
Co., IN, along with some of his siblings, before 1820.

All in the following section marked
with this red lefthand column
is taken from Jesse Blaine Gwin's
1961 book, History of the Gwin Family.
From Chapter
1, Early Gwin Families in America, page
12, subheaded Virginia,
paragraph two, we read:
Col. Edmund Gwin from Ireland was another
early settler in Virginia. He went to Pittsylvania
County and is reported to have been massacred by early
Indians. It is known that at least some, and perhaps
all the Gwins from Ireland originally came from Wales. Col.
Edmund Gwin had a son, George Holmes Gwin, who
died in 1796. His Will has been often quoted in
early history publications and is as follows:
In the name of God, Amen, I, George Holmes
Gwin of the county of Pittsylvania, State of
Virginia, being weak of body, but of perfect sense and
memory, thank God for it, do make this my last Will and
Testament:
FIRST, I give my soul to God, the maker of it, in
hope of a perfect resurrection.
SECOND, my body to dust be buried in Christian manner
at the discretion of my Executors. My worldly goods
which it has pleased God to bless me with, after
paying my lawful debts, I dispose of in the following
manner:
ITEM--I give unto my beloved wife, Elizabeth Gwin,
the plantation where I now live during her natural
life. Also two negroes, Philos and Amey, and
all horses, cattle, hogs, and sheep with all my
plantation tools and household goods, and after her
death be given to my son Thomas Gwin.
ITEM--I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Martha
Bostick, one negro woman, Lucy, and
increase.
ITEM--I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Nancy
Southerland, one negro girl, Homeal, and
increase.
ITEM--I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Elizabeth
Fallen, one negro girl, Philas, and
increase.
ITEM--I give unto my son, John Gwin, that
part of my land on the south side of Sandy River
beginning on Sandy River at a poplar about the deep
hole. Also a negro boy, Joe.
ITEM--I give unto my son, Jesse Gwin, that
part of my land on the north side of the said river
beginning on the east side of Rocky Branch, thence up
the branch to Wilson's line to the river at the Bear
Garden line; also one negro boy, Lacy, one bay
mare, and one sorrel horse.
ITEM--I give to my son, Holmes Gwin, one
negro, Stephen.
ITEM--I give to my son, Littlebury, one
negro, Roger.
ITEM--I give to my son, Josiah Gwin, one
negro, Amey, and land on Sandy River; also
tools and stock lent to my wife.
LASTLY, I leave my two beloved sons, John Gwin
and Jesse Gwin, to be my sole Executors of
this, my last Will and Testament.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have set my hand and seal this
the 11th day of October 1794.

From
Chapter 3, The Gwins in Indiana, page 46, subheaded George
Holmes
Gwin Descendants, we read:
The Will of George Holmes Gwin, son of Edmund
Gwin, given in Chapter 1, gives his sons as John,
b. about 1755, Jesse, b. 1758, Thomas, b.
1772, Holmes, Littlebury, and Josiah.
We have found no later records of Holmes, Littlebury,
or Josiah, but we know the three sons John, Jesse, and
Thomas, went to Harrison County in southern Indiana. The
records show this migration west was in 1802 or 1803,
but it is not certain they all went west at the same
time.
It is known that Jesse served in the
Revolutionary War, and the name of Holmes Gwin
appears in Revolutionary War Records. As already
mentioned, Jesse Gwin was at Gwynne Island
(Virginia) when Governor Dunsmore was driven out
by the British in 1776.
John Gwin's sons were James, George, Edmund,
Jr. (b. 1785), Edmnd II, John, and
Holmes. Edmund, Jr., married in
1812 and had two sons, David Howard and Edmund,
and two daughters, Celia and Katherine.
Thomas Gwin, b. 1772, d. 1835, married Mildred
Bates and probably did not move to Indiana until
1811. He had a son, William Vaughn Gwin,
b. 1807. In 1830 William Vaughn married Susan
Hedrick of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. They
lived at Lanesville, Indiana, and in 1852 he was Sheriff
of Harrison County. Thomas had another son of
record named Berry Gwin. Berry is known to
have had a son, James Monroe Gwin, b. 1837, 10,
22. James Monroe Gwin, during the administration
of President Buchanan, 1857-1861, was Assistant
Postmaster of New Albany, Indiana under his cousin, F.
M. Gwin. Later he was in the feed business with
his father and was a member of the undertaking firm of Meeker
and Gwin. He married Julia Merryman
in 1860. In 1875 he was married again to Carrie C.
Warren of New York. They had two children, Newland
Gwin and Edith Gwin. Jesse Gwin, son
of George Holmes Gwin, had a son named Jesse Gwin.

Subject: Gwins in Virginia
I have been extracting information on Gwins in Virginia
from the Virginia Genealogical Society Journal. There
were quite a few deeds involving George Holmes Gwin
and Richard Gwin. Also, quite a few debt and
assault cases involving them!!?? Take a look at the
following and let me know what you think.

GWINs in
Virginia From Virginia
Genealogical Society Journal
[John M. Gwin NOTE: See yellow compilation chart at end of
this page.]
Yesterday I found that Ancestry.com has the Virginia
Genealogical Society Journal, Volumes 1-35 as a
resource. I am curious about the relationship of George
Holmes Gwin to my Isom Gwin. Going
through the journal, I could not find an answer to
that question. However, I did find information on GHG
in close physical relationship to other Gwins in
Albemarle, Goochland, and Pittsylvania counties. I
have extracted info on all these people, plus
some other Gwins whose relationship to GHG is less
certain.
It appears that
Richard Gwin and George Holmes Gwin lived very close
to each other, at least in the earliest
time. That would seem to indicate that they
were related.

Gwin first names transcribed by Jim and recorded on
this page in this green chart. I've recorded
immediately below how many times each name appears in
the transcription.I would like to believe
that all of these six Gwins are very closely
related.]
Richard Gwin: 20 times
1743-1749, 1754, 1756, 1775
George Holmes Gwin 14 times

Samuel Canterbury 1 time

Est. b. 1720, d. 1790;
therefore, I don't think this is the Richard Gwin
claimed by Isham to be his father; but he could
easily be Isham Gwin's
grandfather and same generation as--perhaps even
brother of--George Holmes Gwin.
Est. b.
1720, d. unk.; therefore, I believe this is the
older of the two GH Gwins in the yellow
compilation chart at the end of this page.
The two dates are for only
one trial, so very little input is made here.
Est. b. bef. 1780;
could be the same generation
as Geo. Holmes Gwin or that of his children.
Est. b. 1720, so he could be
the same generation as Richard Gwin and George
Holmes Gwin.
Est. b. 1740, d. aft. 1772;
He could be a younger brother to Geo. H. Gwin.
Could be related
to the Beards/Biards
who show up with William Gwin
in
Millers' Cove,
Blount Co., TN,
and later in
Dallas Co., AL.
Est. b. bef. 1770;
therefore, could be the same generation as--or the
older generation of-- the Mary Canterbury who
married Isham Gwin.

Subject: gwin family in Indiana
Reply-To: kgwin@indy.net
Dear John,
I have a lot of information on the gwin family who
migrated from pittsylvania county, Va.
John Gwin of Danville Va. settled in Harrison
cty,1804.There was 9 children, one of which was my gg
grandfather
Homes Gwin, he had a brother Geo, Ed, John and Thomas.
four sisters, Elizabeth, nancy, sallie and Polly.
I believe I read somewhere in your site, that geo or maybe
it was john had a son who was a capt. in the civil
war. The capt was Isum Gwin, son of Homes and Mary
patterson Gwin.( see the 80th indiana on your web.) type
in 80th Indiana, scott Meeker of Wis. has written a great
deal on the 80th. I donated Isums civil war diary to the
Indiana historical society, Indianapolis last year.
If you are interested in more info, such as George's
migration to Macoupon county, Il, I will be glad to help
you with this info.
please consider there was many Geo Gwins, Holmes Gwin and
Homes Gwins. John Gwins brother Thomas also cmae to
harrison county in 1804. all settled in Lanesville,
In. My Great Grandfather Isum was born in Lanesville in
1826. buried in Martin county Indiana. Died 1906.
Hope to hear from you..

OK. I have thrown caution to the winds and combined
all the data in the above files, putting it into
my own format in outline form in this bright yellow
box.
Therefore,
NONE OF THIS SHOULD BE TAKEN AS FACT--YET.
So far, however,
most of this stuff seems to combine very
readily with
little to no disagreement, each researcher's
contribution
tending to enhance, not contradict, the
others'.

My best guess at
the spelling and misproununciation of
this given name, Jesse, is based on
the old-style double-ess. The 1870
census page Mike Walker also sent,
which I transcribed below, makes it
clear that this is Jeffrey (spelled
here Jefrey).

There are
clearly two double-u's in this name;
either the enumerator accidently wrote
the double-u twice or this was his
attempt at a phonetic spelling of the
respondent's prounciation of the last
name: /goo-WIN/ or /guh-WIN /; also
clear here is the actual first name of
Jeffrey, not Jesse as I had guessed
from the 1850 census reported above.

Bonnie Clark
Bonnie, I decided to transcribe the information I found on the
1997 RootsWeb Query Page for Pittsylvania County,
Virginia. I believe that Thomas Gwin is the father of your
Elizabeth Gwin who married Richard Lilly in Harrison County,
Indiana in 1837.
The information below was submitted by Jane Boward
boward@cfw.com .
February 14, 1997
"I am looking for the family of Mildred BATES of NC, perhaps,
who m Thomas GWIN (9 Jan 1772 Pit, 1825 or 35), s/o George
Holmes GWIN of Pittsylvania Co. In an old application I
found a statement that Mildred was the dau of James BATES and
Betsy VAUGHN. Also our family history is that my
grandmother's line is from Goochland, VA. There is a James
Bates who m (2) "Mary VAUGHN". (Thomas & Mildred moved
to IN ca. 1811)
Mildred & Thomas had dau, Nancy Arrington GWIN (m
gggrandmother). She was named for her grandmother, Nancy
Arrington who m George Holmes GWIN, mentioned above."
http://www.rootsweb.com/~vapittsy/que2.htm
Bonnie, as I mentioned to you, George Holmes Gwin purchased land
in Albemarle and Goochland counties before going south to
Pittsylvania. Some persons show that GHG was born in
Pittsylvania County-- I am quite sure that is incorrect.
I believe that there was a Richard Gwin who was in Albemarle
and/or Goochland counties before coming to Pittsylvania County.
John McDonald Gwin believes that my
Isom Gwin/Isham Guinn's father was Richard Gwin who married
Sarah Chesley.
I have added John Gwin and Mike Walker as copy to this e-mail
since they are serious GWIN researchers.
I enjoyed our phone conversation today. Thanks again for
the picture of you and your husband-- I think it was a good
picture of you and James (or, do you call him Randall?).
I'll try to post it to the family web site tonight or tomorrow.
Best wishes,
Jim

All 1820 United States Federal Census Results
1820 United States Federal Census Record about

I looked at this census on Ancestry.com. On
the preceding page, written "page 41," I found
Fielding Luttrell, Nathan Luttrell and Vincent
Luttrell. On the following page 77 of 91,
written "page 42," I found:
William Guinn ---1--1 -1---1
Several lines below were:
Mary Luttrell followed by
Isham Gwinn 2---1-3
1-1--1 and
Champion Gwinn 32-2--- -----3
I doubt that the Isham Gwinn in Lincoln County,
Tennessee is the Isom Gwin who lived in Indiana at
about the same time. I provided the persons
named Luttrell because I am pretty sure that one of
the children of George Holmes Gwin of Virginia
married a Luttrell. I think that several sons
of George Holmes moved to Indiana, and that some
Luttrells came with them.
Somehow I think that my Isham Guinn/Isom Gwin is
related to George Holmes Gwin of Goochland,
Albemarle and Pittsylvania counties, Virginia.
Some day I hope to find how.
To put things in perspective with some facts, I am
providing additional information on Indiana GWINs
who were living about the same time.
11/28/1820 Wm. Huston obtained a marriage
license to marry Sarah Gwin, with c. of f. (consent
of father) Thom [I am sure that it is Isom.
JTW]. This is contained on page 9 of MARRIAGE
AFFIDAVITS AND CERTIFICATES Harrison County,
Indiana 1809-1865, by Walter S.
Beanblossom (a LOVE VIERS BAKER CLORE cousin of
mine. JTW), March 1973, published by the Ancestral
Trails Historical Society, Vine Grove, Kentucky.
I haven't been working on the Gwin branch in the
past couple of weeks (which means I don't have all the
names/dates in my head), but I'll be happy to drop you a note
with what I know after I can reorient myself to that branch of
the family.
Briefly, the FM Gwin (postmaster) is Francis M Gwin -- I don't
know who his parents were, but his uncle was Thomas Gwin,
sheriff of Floyd co (Indiana). Francis lived with William Gwin,
sheriff of Harrison Co in 1850, but I don't know if William was
his father/uncle/cousin/etc.
I do have the Gwin book now, but I'm not 100% convinced of its
accuracy on some counts (in fact, I'm convinced some bits are
WRONG), but I haven't been spending a lot of time on it (been
off on other family branches). Anyway, I'll put together
what I have and get back to you.
Best,
Claire

Hello, Claire--very good to meet you--thanks so much for
writing! I apologize for letting your letter get by me. I just
rediscovered it when I was reorganizing my files.
I'm very interested in hearing from you. I have a copy of the
JBG book, but there's a lot I haven't gotten to study yet. And I
haven't worked on my George Holmes Gwin page in ages, it seems.
It's probably time to do so again.
Best to you, In Jesus,

John,
If you're still working on Gwin family genealogy, I'd like to
chat with you about your George Holmes Gwin page.
I'm trying to sort out some family history and have information
on the "F. M. Gwin" that is mentioned in the Jesse Blaine Gwin
book excerpt as the "postmaster" under Lincoln.
(I've ordered of the JBG book, but not received my copy yet).
Anyway, I have 1850 census records with Francis ("F M") living
with William Gwin, Lilly, Greenberry B, Mahala, David W, and
Thomas "I" or "J" (in Corydon). All are listed with the
gwin surname, but I am unsure of relationships. In 1860 (in New
Albany), Francis is married with a young daughter, but Thomas
and Mahala are also living with him.
If you're interested in an email exchange, please drop me a
note.
Thanks,
Claire Schaeffer

John:
I read with great interest your latest contribution to the Gwin
genealogy which appears on the internet. However, I was
disappointed to find little of the Indiana branch of the famiy.
My 2-Great Grandmother was Nancy Gwin (married name Pilgrim),
daughter, I believe, of John Gwin, Jr., who was, I believe, a
grandson of George Holmes Gwin. I believe that these Gwins
originated in Pittsylvania County in Virginia, several families
settling in Harrison County, Indiana. My problem is that I have
been unable to find either the birth or death dates for Nancy.
Her marriage certificate was filed in Harrison County, Indiana,
on June 22, 1823.
Please advise if you have uncovered any further data on Nancy. I
believe that she must have died prematurely in the 1840's, since
her husband remarried in 1848.
