The updating of the numbering system used on
this page has been completed. Generation 28 is my own;
27 is that of my parents; 29 is that of my children, etc. -- John M.
Gwin, May 2009
The reformatting of the name
font and census data for this page has been completed. --John M. Gwin, Aug 2011
My first source of info for all this page is my father's late brother, James Bassett Gwin II. Page 46 is entitled BASSET FAMILY HISTORY and starts out:
"Compiled by James Basset Gwin II of 2918 45 St New Orleans 20, LA in the year 1949 from records submitted from the collections of Kate L. Gwin Tuscaloosa Al, and Edith Snow, Washington, DC. Information obtained from Major Champe Carter McCulloch who employed genealogists to trace this ancestry." His notes for Anne Gwin and Joseph Basset were "submitted by his [i.e., Joseph Basset's] granddaughter, Mrs. H. P. Hilliard (Cara Lee Macon) of 902 Gaines St., Ennis, Texas, May 1930 (some dates supplied from other sources)."
My second source is Mr. Jeffrey Neil Bassett, Jnbassett@aol.com, who saw my Genforum post and sent me information he said came from Elizabeth Nitschke Hicks. I cut his info apart and added each piece where it was applicable. Thus each note preceded by JB/ENH came from him.
My third source is Ms. Elizabeth (Liz) Nitschke Hicks herself , erootrot@usa.net , my third cousin once removed through this Basset line.
Fourth are the 1850 census of Dallas
Co. and the 1870 census of Shelby Co.
Fifth are the sisters, Jo Ann Napper and Rosemary Grubbs, each of whom
is my fourth cousin--twice! :-)
These tables may help explain these multiple relationships:
Relationship
through William
Sutton Gwin and his
aunt, Mary Ann Gwin |
Relationship
through Ida Eliza
Basset and her uncle, Joseph Lavalette Basset |

[John M. Gwin Note: One can now see that although Jo Ann and I are full fourth cousins twice, we really do not seem to be double-fourth cousins (as we would be if two siblings had married two siblings). Instead, I speculate that we are only one-and-a-half times fourth cousins (or one generation away from the double-sibling generation. Having found no such word in Merriam-Webster's Unabridged for this situation, I believe I am correctly coining the term sesqui-fourth cousins. However, since I am neither a geneticist nor a trained genealogist, I defer this call to those more knowledgeable than I; it may be that Jo Ann and I actually are double-fourth cousins.] |
Uncle James' notes are evidently
incorrect on this generation:

My aunt Cora Lee (daddy's sister) started a family search years ago when she was really up in years, and made a trip to Alabama doing some good research. This was all before the days of the computer and her resources were limited. I was very interested in taking up the work then, but I was working full time.
My mother was quite ill at the time and I spent weekends with her and my step father. Then Aunt Cora Lee became ill, and I moved her near me in order to help her. When my mother passed away, my step dad, who was totally blind, required a lot of help in order for him to stay in his home.
Our brother lived in Ca. and was not in good health. Rosemary was helping him and going back and forth to Ca.. Also coming here as often as she could to help, so we were both very busy for several years.
What I am going to do now is compile all the history I have, get it better organized, and study your website thoroughly. If I find anything in what I have that I think you may not have, I will certainly let you have it.
If you want to search for any of my line of the family, please feel free. I'm sure Rose will agree.
I have a daughter living in Fayetteville, Arkansas She and her husband have an insurance agency, and Gary is also an auctioneer.
Does your daughter and her family live permanently in India? Sounds very interesting.
We have a his, mine and ours family. James and I were both married before. I had a daughter by my first marriage and James had four children by his. Then we had two of our own. So we raised six children. His daughter lived with her mother.

Subject: Hilliard Family Tree
Hello:
My mother, Jo Ann Napper, had been corresponding with you by email regarding her grandfather, Hiram Preston Hilliard. She is trying to piece together the Family Tree. Her computer crashed and she has been unable to email you for several months now. I told her that I would write to you for her.
Right before her computer crashed, she thought you had told her you had been able to locate her grandfather's father. Her grandfather is Hiram Preston Hilliard. He was an orphan, but I think my mother knows that his mother's name was Mary Kimbrough. Hiram may have had a half sister who was from Florida.
If you have been able to locate any information about Hiram Preston Hilliard, I would appreciate it very much if you could let me know. Thanks very much in advance for your help.

Hello!
I have some information here that my mother, Jo Ann Napper, wanted you to have about some missing descendants. If you have any questions about anything, just let me know, and I can ask her if I don't know the answer. Here it is:
This is information that is missing on page five that states that descendants of Cara Lee Macon are missing. These are the children of sisters Jo Ann Hilliard Napper and Rosemary Hilliard Grubbs:
1) Mrs. James Napper is Jo Ann Hilliard, married first to Leon B. Tarno, one child, Sheila Ann Tarno Napper Cooper; married second to James Lewis Napper, two children, Joanna Lynn Napper and Paul Lewis Napper; four stepchildren, James Larry Napper, Jamie Lee Napper, William Robert Napper, and David Alva Napper.
2) Mrs. J. R. Grubbs is Rosemary Hilliard, born April 2, 1934; married Jimmy Rhea Grubbs; lives in Lakewood, CO., four children, Michael Grubbs, Steven Grubbs, Deborah Grubbs, and Mark Grubbs.
Also, Cara Lee’s son George’s middle initial is J.
My mother, Jo Ann Napper, said she is anxious to know who John Gwin’s father is? She only has a few Gwin names besides her great-grandmother. Ann Gwin is her great-great-grandmother.

SEPARATED FOR 52 YEARS--REUNITED HERE
H. P. Hilliard and his sister, Mrs. H. C. Taylor of Mobile, Ala., reunited here after 52 years separation. In 1869 down in Florida there lived two little orphan children, a boy aged seven and his half-sister of four years. Conditions were such that they were separated, the boy being taken into one home and the girl into another in different cities. For the next 52 years they did not so much as hear from each other.
About a month ago some relatives made a visit, and in talking over old times and inquiring about those who have passed away, one of their children happened to mention the whereabouts of H. P. Hilliard of Ennis, Texas, and the other knew of Mary Dillon, now the wife of H. C. Taylor of Mobile, Ala.
They were informed of the whereabouts of each other, and in response to an invitation from Mr. Hilliard, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor of Mobile arrived here early Thursday morning for a visit in the Hilliard home. It was a joyous meeting, and although they were too young when separated to recognize each other now, they have renewed their allegiance to each other and are enjoying a reunion which neither of them ever expected to occur.
[John M. Gwin Note: If one starts with 1869, one can add 52 years (of separation) to that year to get the approximate date of this reunion: 1921. This means one should be able to find her in the 1920 census of Mobile, AL and work backward from there.]
See? I think this is probably the family of Mary Dillon:

This section is temporarily in use to hold census summaries for Mary Dillon Taylor (above, right). 1910-20 In 1910 and 1920 they're still in Mobile... 1900 ...but in 1900 they were in Sibley's Mill, Baldwin Co., AL (just east of Mobile and Mobile Co., but still in the Bay area). Here in 1900 we find out some more clues from their reports: she states she was b. Jan 1864; Hiram was b. Sep 1857. All of her eight kids are still alive. They have been m. 19 years. His dad was b. in SC; her dad was b. in Illinois(!); both their mothers were b. in AL. And here we run into the problem of the missing/destroyed 1890 census. If only they'd married a year earlier! Nevertheless, since it's so close to their wedding, they're likely in the same town as each other, so we'll look for him first, then try to locate her near him. 1880 OK, here's one Hiram Taylor, single, age 22, a boarder, no occupation listed, and in Mobile! 1880 Oh, and look here! Mary J. Dillon, in the Bay area, age 16 living with a Fox family. She and her parents were b. in Florida--this agrees with the reunion article. And she's adopted! Looking good! Shall we see if we can find these Foxes in 1870? 1870 Here are James and Mary Fox with sons David, 3, and James, 2--and an Albert, 6 mos., who evidently didn't survive childhood. Mary Dillon is not there--yet. She'd have been six years old at this time, however. |

To: jmcdgwin@zianet.com Subject: Bassets I noticed the comment below on your website (now removed, thanks to this good response from son Jack). Harry M. Basset was my father. He did not serve in the military. He actually lived with his first wife, Annie, for a period of weeks--I understood from family remarks that she started a fire in their house and he moved out. He actually never divorced until 1940 to marry my mother, Carolyn Henderson. Jeff and Liz have told me everything I know about my family history. 23.10--Joseph

This has to be our Will C. Lewis, widower of Emma. Everything matches, from his age to his occupation his and his parents' POB. The only discrepancy is that he declares he is still married, when in fact, his wife had died some eight years earlier! Did he "go off the deep end" when she died, leaving his daughters Basset and Mollie with someone else to raise? He is here in Houston, hundreds of miles from Ennis, in 1900, but in 1910, he'll be living with Mollie and her family. So where are Basset and Mollie? |

[World War I Draft] REGISTRATION CARD #26
for Joe Lavalette Basset, age 27, of Central, Miss., b.
Jany. 29, 1890, US citizen, natural born in Lexington*, Ala,
US, white, medium height, medium build, brown eyes, auburn
hair, registration date: 6-5-17, Dallas Co., Ala, Precinct
25. Card is signed by the registrant: "Joe
Lavalette Basset" [*John M. Gwin Note: Lexington was a town
in Dallas County near the present-day town of Safford. An
elderly local farmer and homeowner told me in 2006 that
present-day Dallas Co. Rd. 109 was once the
Cahaba-to-Lexington Road.] |
Excerpt from Memorial and Biographical History of Dallas County, Texas (1892):
G. T. Macon, a contractor and builder of Dallas, came here in March, 1889, and has already erected many residences here, as well as the Oak Cliff Hotel and the Christian Church. Besides, he has also put up several business houses, as the Henderson Building on Commerce Street, etc., in 1890 when he employed 250 men. He was born in Alabama, in 1845, the fifth in order of birth of the ten children of E. J. and Mary Ann (Syler) Macon.
His father, E. J. Macon, was born in North Carolina and early in life settled in Alabama. He was at first a saddler and afterward became a planter and accumulated considerable wealth, but the ravages of war swept it mostly away. He died in 1863 and his wife, Mary Ann (Syler) Macon, a native of Alabama, died in 1861--both died in Shelby County, Alabama.
In 1864, in Shelby County, Alabama, Mr. G. T. Macon was
married to M.E. Bassett (see 4.1
above), a native of that State and brought up in Cahaba. Her
parents were Joseph L. and M. A. (Gwin) Bassett.
Her father was born in England and her mother in
Alabama. Mary Ann Gwin Bassett died in 1845, and the father
was killed in a sawmill in Talladega County, that State, in 1865.

As the title
states, there are no other Kimbroughs (of any spelling
of which I could think) to be found either in the Ancestry.com
transcription database of the 1860 federal
census of Selma, Dallas Co., AL, records
or in my persusal of their photocopies of the original
documents. I could see no Kimbroughs at
all in Ancestry.com's
1870 census data thereof. The family's migration pattern is of interest: from NC north to VA, then southwest to TN, then southeast to GA, and finally west to AL. IT'S POSSIBLE THAT THIS IS OUR HIRAM'S MATERNAL GRANDFATHER--see Kate's notes below. |
Nancy Kimbrough | 45 |

It was recorded
that Nancy could neither read nor write. |
|||
Katy Kimbrough | 15 |

It was recorded
that she had attended school within the year. Cousin Jo Ann Napper writes, "I am led to believe by a note my aunt made while researching for Hiram's parents, that Hiram's mother must have been Mary Kimbrough, sister to John Kimbrough. " But
the
oldest
child
listed
here
is
Katy, so if her name is
Mary Katherine, and if she
marries Mr. Hilliard in the next couple of
months and if they have
a baby right away, she could be the mother of
our Hiram. Possible, perhaps, but not
very plausible.
It is very
possible and even plausible, however, that Katy
has an older
sister Mary who is already married to
Mr. Hilliard and may already have conceived our
Hiram. |
