Return to the Genealogy Home Page

The updating of the numbering system used on this page has been completed. Generation 28 is my own;
27 is that of my parents; 29 is that of my children, etc.  --   John M. Gwin, Mar 2009

The reformatting of the name font and census data for this page has been completed. --John M. Gwin, Aug 2011

SOURCES:

1--My first source of info for all this page is my father's late brother, James Bassett Gwin II.  Page 46 of his collection is entitled BASSET FAMILY HISTORY and starts out:

"Compiled by James Basset Gwin II of 2918 45 St New Orleans 20, LA in the year 1949 from records submitted from the collections of Kate L. Gwin, Tuscaloosa, AL, and Edith Snow, Washington, DC.   Information obtained from Major Champ Carter McCullough who employed genealogists to trace this ancestry."

2--My second source is Mr. Jeffrey Neil Bassett, bassettgenealogy@hotmail.com, who saw my page and sent me information he said came from Elizabeth Nitschke Hicks. I cut his info apart and added each piece where it was applicable. Thus each note preceded by JB/ENH came from him. Thanks, Jeffrey.

3--And now my third source is Ms. Elizabeth (Liz) Nitschke Hicks herself , erootrot@usa.net , my 3C1R (third cousin once removed). Special thanks to you, Liz, for all your insight, help, and information! :-)

4--Today, 4 Apr 2007, another cousin checked in and supplied some more good data. He's Michael Stewart, my 4C1R (4th cousin once removed), and I'm adding his input below in this green.  And in July 2007, 4th cousin Cecile Crawford followed up on what Michael sent, adding quite a bit more, which I'm continuing in this same green. Now here's more on this line from 4C1R Stephen David Stewart: in Oct 2008 he updated his family's section, which I'm also continuing in this same green.

5--Since then, I have also used Ancestry.com to access census and other documents.  Since Christmas 2017, thanks to my son Jeremy and daughter-in-law Kara, I've used their DNA services, too, confirming over 78,000 living cousins in all my lines--and counting!

6--FindAGrave.com has been a valuable resource as well.  Thanks to the thousands who have built memorials for loved ones and others.

7--And Facebook.com has helped me trace lines of deceased family into the present day.

John McDonald Gwin

Basset, pronounced /bah-SAY/ is French.  When Jean Jacques Luis Basset married Madamoselle Mary Lavalette and had two children, that's how they would have pronounced it.  But when their son moved to England, the locals there called it Bassett, pronounced /BASS-ut/ (rhymes with "Pass it!"), and added the extra tee, which some of James' and Mary's children evidently kept.  For example, Uncle James' middle name is Bassett, and he always pronounced it with the English pronunciation, never the French.   He said his dad (same name) always pronounced it that way, too, and he assumed his grandmother, Ida Eliza Bassett, did also.

M y   G e n e r a t i o n    O n e

21.00--Jean Jacques Luis Basset m. Madamoselle Mary Lavalette; 2 sons; (siblings and parents of JJLB and ML are unk. to me).

My uncle James Gwin's notes said his name was Georges Basset m. Madamoselle Lavalette. He got that information and all the following information in 1949 from the collections of Kate L. Gwin, Tuscaloosa, AL, and Edith Snow, Washington, DC, who had gotten it earlier from Maj. Champe Carter McCulloch, mayor of Waco, TX, who "employed genealogists to trace this ancestry." Uncle James' introductory paragraph to his Basset pages reads,

"The name BASSET is French and originally pronounced "BASS-AY". The first mention of this name revealed in research is found in 'The Geneva Armorial' in 1399 as a Burgess named Robert son of Permet member of the council of state in 1404 (sic). The closest relative found was a Georges Basset in Geneva, Switzerland, who was a member of a Hugenot family in the eighteenth century before the French Revolution.  Georges Basset was apprenticed to a silversmith and fell in love with a Madamoselle Lavalette who was the daughter of a French nobleman.  Her parents objected to their courtship and sent her away to Wales to school to separate them.  Georges followed her and married her.  They had two sons.  One of them emigrated to America, and his whole family were wiped out in a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia.  The other son, named John James Louis Basset, married Mary Miles, an English girl, and they settled in Sussex, England and raised 14 children."
Some of what this unknown, employed, genealogist found is obviously correct, but it is also clear that some confusion exists.  If Georges Basset is indeed in this line, he may have been the FATHER of the Jean Jacques Luis Basset I (John James Louis Basset I), the latter of whom went to England and married Mary Lavalette as is proven below.

Our cousin Liz Hicks sent me a photocopy of the old 1767 marriage license.  I transcribe it here with typeset words in boldface type and handwritten words in italic type.  The five signatures are also underlined.  The fact that he is listed here as a watchmaker perhaps lends credence to the story of someone being apprenticed to a silversmith, above.  The fact that the last names of the two witnesses are neither Basset nor Lavalette perhaps lends credence to the story of their eloping without either parents' permission (or at least presence).  And the fact that the fourth child of JJL Basset II is George perhaps lends credence to the existence of a Georges in their upline somewhere.

Transcription of the 1767 Marriage Certificate
of Jean Basset and Mary Lavalette

22.01--One of the children (no name listed) allegedly emigrated to America; the family all allegedly perished in Philadelphia in a yellow fever epidemic.

22.02--John James Louis Basset (Jr.?) m. Mary Miles, an English girl; settled in Sussex, Eng.; 14 ch.; [JB/ENH notes: *53B1. Jean Jacques Luis "James" Basset; m. 13 Jun 1803 in St. Marylebone, London, Eng. to Mary Miles]

Some of these fourteen children emigrated to America, almost all of whom came to Cahaba, AL. Those known (or reported/believed) to have made this trip (or these trips, as I so far know only how and when one family--William and Harriet--came, not the others) across the Atlantic include (1) James, (3) Charlotte (and her husband Fred Cheesman), (4) George, (5) William (and his wife Harriet), (6) Louis (he married Sarah Gwin in Cahaba), (8) John (mentioned in Fry's Memories of Old Cahaba), (10) Joseph (he married Mary Gwin in Cahaba), and (11) Emma (all three of her marriages occurred in North America).  Suffice it for now to say that little is known of and some confusion exists concerning the three youngest as to whether or not they came, exactly what their names were, and how and when they died.

Immediately next is the list I have of the fourteen. Following it is an expanded version of that list with known downlines.

23.01--James Basset
23.02--Mary Basset

[FindaGrave Note: Name Batistine "Batie" Roe, b. 1841, married Charles Frederick Cheesman about 1859. Charles was son of Frederick & Charlotte Cheesman, also in this cemetery.  Charles enlisted in Confederate States Army as Bugler, in Company F, Texas Cavalry, Morgan's Regiment.  The last record I can find on him is Jan 28, 1910, on an application for Confederate pension, when he was residing in Jefferson Co, TX.  Submitted by: EleanorB (#47071635]

[John M. Gwin NOTE: In the same 1870 census of Matagorda Co., TX, a Charlotte Cheeseman, age 42 and born in England, is listed as a housekeeper and living with Charles F. and the three children, Irene (9), Martin (8), and Frederick (4). We know that Charles' father, Fred, had died in 1866, and since Charles' wife, Batistine, does not appear in this census, we may assume that she also had died in the four years since baby Frederick was born; therefore, I believe that this Charlotte, listed as age 42 and being born in England, is indeed our Charlotte, the mother of Charles, and that either someone made a mistake in transcribing notes or she intentionally lied about her age, which in truth would've been 64, not 42!]

Obituary clipping from an unnamed newspaper
copied from her FindAGrave.com memorial

[John M. Gwin NOTE--2008: According to Anna Fry in Memories of Old Cahaba, Jerry "Jere" Lister lived "over the point" (i.e., across the Cahaba River by ferry from downtown Cahaba) in the same neighborhood as did John and William Basset, two of Robert George Cheesman's uncles. Fry says that the three were proprietors of fashionable tailor shops, and it may be that they were partners of a single shop. It is likely, then, that Mary Ellen Lister is the daughter of this same Jerry Lister.  In the 1860 census, Robert was age 23, working as a mail contractor, and living with his parents in Matagorda Co., TX.  Since he married Mary Ellen two years later in 1862 in Cahaba, he must've gone back there to marry her!  As stated above, she and her brother, Charles Lister, are still alive in 1920 and living with her daughter, Maggie Cheeseman Gibbs.]

I am interested in the Archie Floyd Gibbs, [Sr.], who married Maggie McKay Cheesman.  My brother and I are looking for an Archie Floyd Gibbs who was the father of our grandfather George Travis Gibbs, Sr. of Summergrove, La.  Our Archie Floyd Gibbs was married to Georgia Annie Colquitt and they had only one son.  They either divorced or he died.  We know they left Summergrove, La., but we do not know if they were together or what.  I did find their marriage certificate at the court house in Shreveport, La.  My grandfather was born June 20, 1893 and was raised by his uncle, Will Colquitt.  I know he never mentioned his father and he never lived with his mother.  She lived in El Paso in later years.    Just wondering.         Jeanne Beth Gibbs G

Dear John,   My grandfather was George Travis Gibbs, Sr.  His father was Archie Floyd Gibbs and his mother was Georgia Colquitt.  His parents (I assumed) divorced when he was very young.  My grandfather was raised by Will and Virgie Colquitt of Summergrove, La.  He never mentioned his parents or any of the Gibbs.  We have found nothing about her, but I know she was living around El Paso, Texas in the 1920's.       Thanks for writing.            Jeanne Gibbs Gray

OBITUARY
Eileen Moselle “Mo” Stewart, age 84, passed away, February 12, 2020, surrounded by loved ones in her daughter Lisa’s home in Houston, Texas.
Mo was a sixth generation Texan born April 12, 1935 in Refugio, Texas.  She was the first of two children of Pal and Jo Lankard of Bay City, Texas.  She met the love of her life, Scott Stewart as a teenager. Scott and Mo became inseparable sweethearts and strong leaders at Bay City High School, where they cultivated friendships that remained strong until her death.  After graduating at the top of her class, she accepted a scholarship to attend Mary Baldwin College in Virginia.  After a year she transferred to Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, before finally landing at the University of Texas at Austin. After marrying Scott in 1957, she received her degree in education from the University of Texas.

After living six months in Virginia, while Scott served in the Army, and another few months in Louisiana Scott and Mo returned to Bay City, Texas.  After the birth of their two children, Lisa and Mike, in Bay City, Texas, they eventually settled in Houston, Texas on Kingsride Lane in 1966.  Mo lived there until 2015 after Scott passed in 2005.
Mo was a fantastic educator and started her teaching career at her alma mater Bay City High where she taught English Language Arts.  Shortly after the birth of her second child, she stayed home to raise her children, and during that time she taught music appreciation and worked as a substitute teacher.  In 1980, after her kids were grown, she began working full time at Spring Branch Middle School, where she taught until her retirement in 2000.  During these years she flourished, teaching American History and Gifted and Talented classes.  She adored middle schoolers and kept in contact with many of her students for years.
During her fifty years living at her home on Kingsride Lane in Houston, Mo and Scott cultivated a beautiful and fun homelife with their children Lisa and Mike.  There were many family gatherings throughout every year.  Family gatherings to watch University of Texas football games during the day would culminate late into the evening with Mo singing in the family band, Uncle Dave on the piano, and Scott on the washtub bass.  Everyone else found an instrument and joined in.  As cherished as those times are, the arrival of grandchildren made things even more special.  Mo and Scott loved spending time with their grandchildren more than anything else.  Mo made every day special, and always made sure to never miss a grandchild’s birthday or an important event in their lives.
Mo was also a loyal member of the Ann Pogue Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) as well as the Ima Hogg Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic (DRT).
Mo was preceded in death by her husband Scott Stewart and sister Connie Ory.  She is survived by daughter Lisa Davidson and husband Walter; son Mike Stewart and wife Beverly; sister-in-law Cecile Crawford; brother-in-law David Stewart and wife Marilyn; granddaughters Connie Davidson, Marie Davidson, and Mallory Stewart; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to the visitation and funeral with the family. The visitation and the funeral will be Friday, February 21, 2020 at Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, 12535 Perthshire, Houston Texas.  The visitation will be at 11:00 – 12:30. The funeral service will begin at 12:30.  Serving as pallbearers will be Walter Davidson, David Crawford, Travis Crawford, Wesley Crawford, Patrick Crawford and Steve Stewart.

OBITUARY
Lieutenant Colonel George David "David" Stewart, a fifth generation Texan whose ancestors were citizens of the Republic of Texas, finished his life in triumph when he died in his home surrounded by family on August 4, 2020 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease and cancer.
Born November 22, 1938 in San Antonio, Texas to Mary Kaine and Arthur Cheesman Stewart, David grew up in Matagorda and Bay City before moving to Houston to attend the University of St. Thomas where he met the girl of his dreams, Marilyn, who became his wife of 56 years when they married on September 7, 1963.
On the eve of their 50th wedding anniversary, he wrote this about their years together:
"Fifty years ago tomorrow I married the girl of my dreams, and she is still the girl of my dreams who still makes my heart jump with joy when she walks into the room.  We have shared a wonderful life together, and I hope that through the grace of God, we will have many more years together before the Lord calls us home.  Her love and faith in me have been the driving force in my accomplishments as a husband, father and man.  There would have been no successes without her.  She has endured the stress of reestablishing a new home many, many times; being separated from soldier in peace and war; raising our four children and a grandchild; and putting up with me and my idiosyncrasies and health problems while still smiling and saying "I love you."  I am so lucky and happy that she was brave enough to say yes to my offer to love her and take care of her for as long as we live. Marilyn, you are the girl of my dreams, and I love you so very much."
Throughout his life, David went by many names and played many roles. To his four children, Stephen David Stewart, Patrick Albert Stewart, Christopher Warner Stewart, and Mary Cecile Stewart-Oliver, he was "Papa" and later just "Pop". To his grandchildren, including one he raised as a daughter, Jocelyn Nicole Stewart-Closson, and his other seven grandchildren: Kiska Daegan Varela-Stewart, Tristan Doyle Varela-Stewart, Austin Warner Stewart, Brandon Cade Stewart, Christopher Rodrigo Stewart, Jenining Campbell, and Keeley Natalia Oliver, he was simply "Grandpa".  To his great-grandchild Zahr, his name was unspoken but acknowledged with a baby's smile. To the children he invited into his home and raised as his own for a time, most notably Sarah Bray, he was Mr. Stewart.  To his deceased brother, Scott Stewart and his sister Mary Cecile Crawford, he was little brother.  To friends, he was David. To very many nieces and nephews, he was Uncle David. To others, he was Colonel Stewart or "The Boss", and to a lucky few Cub Scouts, "Akela".
We measure success in many ways. Some amass great wealth; others dazzle us with their talents; and some like David succeed through their service to others.  If service to others could be counted in dollars, David would have been a billionaire.  He earned a B. A. at The University of St. Thomas in Houston, and after one year in law school at The University of Houston, he enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War.  In 1963, after completing Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he received a commission and later became a member of the elite Army Rangers.
While serving in Vietnam, David demonstrated his bravery and selflessness most notably when in the dead of night, under shellfire from the enemy, he rushed across camp and ripped the door off the mess hall in order to extinguish a light that the enemy was using as a target for their barrage, possibly saving the lives of many of his fellow soldiers.  For this valor in combat, the Army awarded him the Bronze Star.  Despite the hardships of battle, he always kept his sense of humor and loved to relate a story of how an extremely venomous snake had slithered into his tent (he had a lifelong fear of snakes) and upon seeing it, he unloaded an entire clip of ammunition from his M-16 to kill it. David never received a Purple Heart for his service to his country in Vietnam, but complications from his exposure to Agent Orange during his tour of duty ultimately led to his death.
David also served in Murphy Dome in Alaska, Dyess AFB, Ft. Bliss, Ft. Hood, Ft. Sill, and Ft. Lee, before the Army sent him to study journalism. In 1974, he received a Master of Science in Journalism from the University of Kansas where he was inducted into Kappa Tau Alpha, the Journalism Honor Society.  While his studies brought him to Kansas, his children remember his time in Kansas most for the days he spent on university-sponsored trips such as frog hunts, fossil gathering missions, and, yes, snake hunts.
David's master's in journalism led him to service at the Pentagon with the Office of the Chief of Public Affairs, Department of the Army, where his primary responsibility was coordination of the Army's celebration of America's Bicentennial.  During this time, he also took on a job as pack master of the local Cub Scout pack where, during awards ceremonies, he wrapped himself in a colorful blanket, donned an authentic native American headdress, and painted his face to become "Akela", the leader of the pack.  He remained active with the scouts for years after his sons had reached adulthood and was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver award for his service.  It was here also that he began his interest in philately (stamp collecting), an interest he shared with all his children to some degree.  He spent many Saturdays picking through stamps with his children at the local stamp store known as the Postal Bell.  Stamps led to coin and postcard collecting.
David served in the Army for 24 years and reached the rank of lieutenant colonel.  While serving, he had numerous assignments in the Air Defense Artillery as well as public affairs assignments.  His jobs took him from coast to coast and overseas to Würzburg, Germany and the Greek Island of Crete.  He notably served two years as the Deputy Chief of Public Affairs at Sixth U.S. Army in San Francisco and four years as Chief of Public Affairs at Fort Bliss, Texas.  In 1985, he continued his graduate education in Public Affairs at the Army Advanced Public Affairs Course at the University of South Carolina before retiring in El Paso where he volunteered to help with the Texas Sesquicentennial.
In El Paso he became the Manager of Communications for the El Paso Chamber of Commerce and editor of EL PASO MAGAZINE and, later, Vice President of El Paso View Publishing Corporation and Executive Editor of EL PASO VIEW magazine.  In 1990, he received a Master of Education in Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso and then served as the Administrator of Our Lady of Assumption School in El Paso.  In 1991 he moved to Universal City, Texas to become the National Executive Director of the American Volkssport Association (AVA).
In 2002, he began what he considered his dream job – Director of the Alamo.  He loved this job more than any other and took greater pleasure in telling anyone who wanted to hear that he occupied an office that housed Sam Houston's desk and sword. During his time at the Alamo, he oversaw the completion of a full, state-of-the-art renovation of the Long Barrack Museum and landscaping projects that greatly enhanced the beauty of the historic shrine to Texas liberty and independence.  He also developed a master plan that included development of financial resources to ensure further preservation and expansion of the Alamo.  While director he met many celebrities.  He loved to talk about sitting next to country singers Faith Hill and Tim McGraw and meeting the stars of the 2004 Alamo movie that premiered in San Antonio. He often reflected on how courteous and friendly James Earl Jones was in person in contrast to the villains he played as Darth Vader in Star Wars and Thulsa Doom, the evil leader of the Cult of Set in the Conan the Barbarian movies.  Many San Antonians remember him for accepting an apology from Ozzy Osborne for his infamous crime of defiling the cenotaph, but Ozzy was more of a footnote to him than some of the other relationships including the strong friendship he built with Fess Parker, best known for his role as Davy Crockett.  He retired in 2009 two years before the Texas Land Commission took control of the Alamo from the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
When David was not working, he could often be seen at a Spurs game or doing some of the volunteer work he loved.  Throughout his military career and after retirement from military service, David had been extremely active in community and church activities, giving many volunteer hours to organizations such as the Randolph Metrocom Chamber of Commerce, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, the Armed Services YMCA, and Wounded Warriors.  He attended and assisted with ACTS retreat, taught CCD, and was President of the Catholic Parish Council at Leighton Barrack.  In recognition of his community service, he received the VII U.S. Corps Helping Hands Award and the Dickshire Coors Reach for Excellence Award.  In Germany, for his work in his church, he received The Cardinal Cooke Award.
In the military, in addition to the Bronze Star, David was awarded five Meritorious Service Medals, three Air Medals, the Army Commendation Medal (with Valor Device plus two additional awards), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Humanitarian Service Medal (California Floods), Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with five stars, and the U.S. Army Staff Identification Badge.
As a civilian, he was honored with Who's Who in the Southwest, Who's Who of Outstanding Americans, Who's Who of Business Leaders, Who's Who Worldwide, American Legion Citizenship Award, Daughters of Confederacy Cross of Military Service, and the American Volkssport Association President's Award.
David served as board member or officer in the following organizations: Texas Independence Trail Region, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Providence College Preparatory School for Girls, Brighton School, Presidio La Bahia, American Society of Association Executives, Public Relations Society of America, Society of Professional Journalists, and Rotary Club of San Antonio.
A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 18 at Porter Loring North with a rosary at 6:30 p.m.  A funeral mass is scheduled at 11 a.m. Aug. 19 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Selma, Texas followed by a private burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
Family and friends who wish they could be present can view the recording of the service below.  (See his FindAGrave memorial.)

We notice here that both their fathers were born in England, so having this in common with each other may have been what drew them together. Perhaps the fathers even knew each other in Cahaba or in England.

Subject: Re: Charlotte and Frederick Cheesman

Hi John...........finally I am getting back to you with some information.  This has been a complicated spring and early summer....just lots of things going on that kept me from concentrating on any genealogy.  BUT.....There are a good many things that need to be corrected about the Cheesman family that moved to Texas.

To start with, for some reason others have indicated that the Frederick Cheesman family lived in Bay City (or close to Bay City) in Matagorda Co., Texas.......well, when they came to Texas, I do not believe Bay City really existed.  They came to Matagorda, Texas, a lovely, thriving community, one of the main Texas ports during and before the Republic of Texas days, and also very important in the time of the Civil War.  They came to Matagorda to live and, I believe, to be planters.  The family may have settled on Matagorda Peninsula or in the Caney Creek area, but all of that was really considered Matagorda.  I need to check my research a bit about the children other than Minna Jane Cheeseman, but I do know much about her married life and descendents.  Minna Jane was my great-grandmother.

Frederick and Charlotte Basset moved their family to Matagorda, Texas sometime in the late 1850's or early 1860's (I think).  Since the town of Cahaba was pretty much closed down by the Civil War, I don't think they would have left there until the outcome of the war was pretty certain.  I have been told though, the Cheesman family was very musical and provided music for the grand balls held at the Colorado House, a fine hotel in Matagorda, and these dances stopped sometime during the Civil War.  (One of the sons taught the latest dances--learned in New Orleans--I somewhere have a copy of his advertisement.)  This may have been C. F., R. G., or A. B., and I do not know their full names.  Charlotte and Frederick Cheesman are buried in the historic cemetery in Matagorda.  Battie Cheesman is buried by them, and her tombstone indicates she was the wife of C. F. Cheesman and died Oct. 21, 1867.  Age 26 years. (I assume this is the person you list as Batistine Roe who married Charles F. in Texas.)  Frederick Cheesman's tombstone states he was born in Horsham, Sussex County, England (no date given); he died at age 59, Nov. 3, 1866.

Minna Jane Cheesman was born in Alabama on Feb. 12, 1846.  She married Walter Scott Stewart in Matagorda, Texas, on March 11, 1869.  (I have a copy of their marriage license.)  He was born in Matagorda on Nov. 28, 1843 to Warner Watson Stewart and Lucy Tribble Stewart.  He was a soldier of the Confederacy and was gone from home and actively in the war from April 1862 until the war was over, returning home some time in 1865.  His brothers John A. Stewart and Greenbury Stewart were also Confederate soldiers.  John never came home--he died at Petersberg, VA, and we assume was buried there.  Minna Jane and Walter Scott Stewart are buried in Matagorda Cemetery along with all of his siblings except John and all but one of their children.

Minna Jane and Walter Scott Stewart had 5 children all born in Matagorda:
1)    Irene Stewart--born December 23, 1869 (m. Charles W. Burkhart , had 3 children)
a)  Charles Stewart Burkhart m. Lunelle Jones, from Livingston, TX--no children
           b)  Charles Lawrence Burkhart  m. Sophia Doubeck from Bay city 1 son:
1) Charles Kent Burkhart, b. July 22, 1934   m.Patricia _ about 1955

Sooooooooo...........

I have just added about 35 or 40 blood relatives that you didn't know about--and quite a few spouses too--I am a bit vague about some of my grandnieces' and nephews' birthdays, but the dates are close.

As you can see, Minna Jane Cheesman married into a family that repeated names over and over lots of times, so it gets pretty confusing sometimes.  When Mike Stewart contacted you and gave you some family names, he actually skipped a generation; his father was Walter Scott Stewart, son of Arthur Cheesman Stewart, son of Walter Scott Stewart, son of Warner Watson Stewart, but the first Walter Scott had a brother named
Arthur Cheesman Stewart who named his son for his father, Warner Watson Stewart (Who's on first...).  The Burkharts were all named Charles something, and Addie and Lillian Cookenboo both married Stewart brothers (and all of their Cookenboo brothers were named Henry-something after their father, Henry).

I am not at all sure what relation I am to you, but probably 4th or 5th cousin somehow.

In any case, it is fascinating to know how many people we are related to!

I will send you some pictures in the next few days.  I don't really have any Cheesman pictures except one of Minna Jane.

The home that Minna Jane and Walter Scott built and lived in is still standing, but in very bad shape.  There is quite a lot of interest in real estate in Matagorda again at this time, and that house is supposed to be up for sale again.  It has not belonged to our family since 1944, but I spent quite a lot of time there when I was a child.  After Minna and Walter Scott died, their son Arthur and his wife Lillian lived in this house.  My father brought his bride from San Antonio to Matagorda to live in his family's home, and this was just one block from the home once lived in by Minna Jane and Scott.

Irene Burkhart, Walter Scott's sister, only lived 3 blocks away.  The Burkhart home was started in 1832 by Rhodes Fisher who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836 (the Burkharts did not buy the home until the late 1800's).  The home Scott and Minna Jane built was probably begun in about 1869--but added onto later.  The home I grew up in was built in 1898 for Walter and Addie Stewart (and also added onto later).  It is a one-story home, has just been purchased, and is being somewhat restored, probably if on the market now would be at a price approaching $300,000--really bizarre to consider that my family probably sold it for $10,000 in 1947 when my father decided to move his family to Bay City!  The house Minna Jane lived in will probably go on the market now for about $100,000 or more, but it would take another $100,000 or more to properly restore it, so as much as I would love to own it, it is not something I can afford.

There is quite lot of history in the Matagorda area...it was a deeply southern, cultural city by the bay when it was founded there by Stephen F. Austin's colony in about 1826, but many things happened over the years, and it has been just a tiny community for quite some time.  There is now a lot of interest in the waterfront there, and a magnificent new bridge will replace the old "swing" bridge over the Intercoastal Canal on the road that follows the Colorado River and leads to the Gulf of Mexico.  Property is suddenly very expensive (it will be interesting to see if anything sells!)

I love to go there when I can, but I have very few  relatives in that area anymore.  Sophia Burkhart is still alive (age 97), but even though she maintains the old Burkhart home in Matagorda, she actually lives in Bay City, and her son, Kent, lives in Florida.

Wow...I started writing this about 11:00 Sunday evening, and it is now almost 3:00 a.m. Monday...I best go and get some sleep, but I will send pictures soon and look for other Cheesman information.

I am going to copy this to Liz Hicks (and to myself so I can remember what I wrote to you!!!), and I will forward it to Mike Stewart, too, but I don't know his e-mail right now.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Texas love,
Cile

Subject: Charles Frederick Cheesman or Cheeseman

Hello John,

I have just seen your web page concerning Charles Frederick Cheesman, headed Charlotte Basset and Fred. Ch., and I am wondering if there is any tie up with him and a possible second marriage to my gr-grandmother's sister, May Georgina Nazer in 1888. At least the name is the same, but the spelling of the surname seems slightly variable.

The only thing that I know about the husband of May Georgina Nazer is that he was a "rich old man". This was from my aunt, Betty, who, sadly, is no longer with us to furnish more details. I have found a marr. record in the IGI 24 Sep 1888, Manhatten, which corroborates her information, but I have been unable to find out any more about him. Later, she went off to Germany and married somebody else, which is also uncorroboratable, it would appear.

May Georgina Nazer was born in Northern Ireland, the daughter of Henry Kelly Nazer, and Eliza or Bessie G Sexton. Other kids of the family went to the States, too, producing a stock broker and an opera singer.

The image of the marr. cert. is not available, so I have gotten stuck.

I hope that, even if "my" CFC is not the same as yours, you may find him of interest!

P.S.: I have just realized that, in the IGI record, his parents are given as Fred C and Charlotte Bassett, and so I reckon we are talking about the same person.

Best wishes,

Rosemary Simons

John,
I stumbled across your page and I see that my aunt Cecile Crawford and my cousin Mike Stewart have already been in contact with you. I am Stephen David Stewart, b 4 Aug 1965 in Abilene, TX; m Theresa Lynn Smith on May 25, 1991 in El Paso, TX, born Aug 22, 1966 in El Paso, TX. My children are Austin Warner Stewart, b Feb 1, 1995 in Davenport, IA; and Brandon Cade Stewart, b Nov. 20, 1997 in Davenport, IA. We currently live in Houston, TX.
My father's information is correct--

My sister Mary's information is correct. I do not remember the date of her wedding
. I'll try to collect the additional information you are missing and send it to you ASAP.
Sincerely,
Steve Stewart

John,
Here's some additional information on my brother Christopher Warner Stewart: Jocelyn Stewart is the daughter of Sarah Elizabeth Dray, b 3-18-1975. Jocelyn was adopted by George and Marilyn Stewart. Christopher and Sarah were never married. Kiska Daegan Barela, b. 9-29-1998, and Tristan Doyle Barela, b 3-20-2002 are the children of Christopher and Kiska Victoria Barela, b 8-26-1974. Christopher and Kiska were never married.
I hope this helps.
Steve Stewart
