An Outline of the Known Family:

20.00--John Vardaman, b. unk.,possibly 1670-80 but prob. earlier, prob. in Sweden; may have been of German, Swedish, or Danish descent, as all these countries have frontage on the Baltic Sea; d. 1714 leaving one adult son who was already married and away from home and three minor children.

21.00--William Vardaman, Sr., "Old William", "William I" , prob. b. in Sweden ca. 1695-1700, since court records in 1758 list his age as "about sixty"; m1. 1720 in New Castle Co., DL to Magdalena Petersson--proven by church records; William I had moved from Delaware to Virginia by 1734 and many years later to Newberry Co., SC, (1766); he had four sons and an unknown number of daughters; (m2?). to an Elinor Herd/Heard--(suggested by some sources--currently moot); m2.( 3?) to Bridgit Tinkler (Jack's and my ggggg-grandmother); 4 sons

22.04--James Vardaman, b. unk.; d. 1797 (proven by estate papers); moved into SC with his parents in 1766; m1. Jack believes this first wife of James may have been Sabra Liles/Lyles for two reasons: (1) her married name is Vardaman, and from census records, she's the only possible person who could've been married to him; and (2) the name Liles is the middle name of Jack's and my gg-grandpa, Edwy Liles Vardaman (who would become Old William's g-grandson); Sabra was the mother of William's first two children and possibly the first three; (m2. Jane Johnson); seven children;

23.02--Thomas Vardaman, b. ca.1777 in Dutch Fork, Newberry District, SC; d. 1857; m. in 1801 at about age 24 in Jefferson Co., GA, to Annie Vining (b.; d.; d/o Shadrach Vining and Phereby Ratcliffe); they moved around in GA and SC, finally settling in Coosa Co., AL, in 1836; nine children;

24.01--Edwy Liles Vardaman, b. 2 Feb 1804 in Putnam (or Jefferson?) Co., GA or b. in Newberry District, SC; d. 25 Jul 1879, age 75 (above obit. says 15 Jul, not 25); bd. with (first) wife at Smyrna Prim. Bapt. Ch. Cem., Goodwater, Coosa Co., AL--Find A Grave Memorial# 9903502 (my Uncle James B. Gwin placed a small memorial to Edwy at the Vardaman plot in the Smyrna Cem., but neither Cousin Jack nor I have any physical proof of their burial there, only the testimony of Uncle James and my father, Adrian Gwin, which, by the way, is good enough for me); m1. at age 19 in Upson Co., GA, 6 Jan 1824 (for 38 years) to Lucinda K. Mauk (b. 23 Mar 1806 in Wilkes Co., GA; d. Mar 1862  (or 17 Apr 1862); bd. Smyrna Prim. Bapt. Ch. Cem., Goodwater, Coosa Co., AL--Find A Grave Memorial# 76022024; d/o Mathias Jackson Mauk, Jr., and Frances Lea); 13 children; 33 grandchildren (11 Kilpatricks, 3 Houses, 8 Adairs, 4 Vardamans, and 7 Lukers!); served as Justice of the Peace in Tallapoosa Co., AL, for 24 years following his move there in 1848 (which would have been until about 1872--about the time, according to the above obituary, of his mental health failure), then moved to Coosa Co. (I speculate that his son John Forsythe Vardaman moved him and his second wife there so he--i.e., JFV--could help take care of him/them.); m2. 4 Jul 1864 to Martha Conway; no ch. by Martha;

Notes for FRANCES ANNIE ADAIR:

Frances Annie Adair Hardman was never heard
from again after her second husband George W. Rush died Jan 30, 1904. She did not inherit anything from George W. Rush's estate, as everthing he owned was left to his children from his first marriage. George and Fannie had no children.

A Death Certificate Search was conducted by the Alabama Department of Public Health from 1910 to 1920 and found no Death Certificate for Frances Annie Adair Hardman Rush (nor for any of the surnames or various spellings of these surnames). It is as if Frances disappeared without a trace.

None of her children remember hearing from her often if at all. But after George Rush died [i.e., in southern Alabama, not Texas], her children lost what little contact they had had with her. None of them knows what may have happened to her.

Jack Vardaman and I found her in the 1900 census--in TX, living with her daughter--but like her kids, we can't find her after George dies,
either.

27.01--Nancy Annie Elizabeth Hardman, b. 29 Dec 1873 near Pickneyville, Clay Co., AL; d. 9 Jul 1958 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL; bd. Forest Hill Cem.,

, in Clay Co., AL,
 to James Lewis Mann (b. 15 Aug 1873 in AL; d. 15 Jul 1965 in Blount Co., AL; bd. unk.); ten known ch.

[listed as Anney E.  Hardman, 6, b. AL/GA/GA, in the Jun 1880 census of Wicker and Pinkneyville, Clay Co., AL]

[Jack Vardaman Note:  Jim Johnson's aunt, Berta Mann, told him that her dad, James Lewis Mann, was a mean man who kept his wife pregnant, and after Nancy divorced him, he married a
much younger woman and had a number of children by her.]

[John M. Gwin Note--2 Nov 2020:  I copied the following bio from James Lewis Mann's FindAGrave memorial:]

[John M. Gwin Note--3 Sep 2019:  This week I received the following email from a cousin--my own third cousin once removed--Margaret Stabler, whose corrections, additions,
and comments appear in this dark green color

"I can add/correct some of this page.  The name for Fannie is Fannie Ferrin Vardaman.  She was my great-grandmother.  I can also add to the children of
Leora Benton Adair Brasfield Williams.  She had Sadie May who married Lawrence Nelson, Annie Lucile who married J. D. Bell, and George Leroy Brasfield who married
Margaret Leona Biggs.  Leora and her husbands (Joe Harvey Brasfield and R. B. Williams) are buried in the Baptist cemetery in Pine Apple. Alabama.
Lucile
and J. D. are buried in Luverne, Alabama, and Sadie and Lawrence are buried either in Century, Florida, or Flomaton, Alabama.  I can give you a list of the rest of the family,
grandchildren, etc.                  Margaret Stabler"

[John M. Gwin Note--16 Oct 2021:  Today I messaged my cousin to ask her about her last message, i.e., Margaret Stabler, whose corrections, additions, and comments

:]

Hi, Cousin!
I hope you and yours are well and avoiding the Covid!
Some time back you sent me some very appreciated updates to my "Adair" page at http://gwingenealogy.net/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Vardaman/AdairEdwMMaryBVardaman.htm.
You and your descendants appear there.
Today I was studying the data you sent, and I have a question:  Who are the parents of your grandchildren, Annwynn and  Connor--Lisa? or David and Laura?
I hope you see this and can answer.  But I especially hope you and all of yours are well.
Talk to you later!

            Annwynn  and Connor belong to David, and all of Sadie and Lawrence Nelson's daughters have passed away.  You need to find a copy of the Brasfield/Brassfield
genealogies.   It was printed in 1959. It details all of the Joe Harvey and Leora Adair Brasfield family up to that date. There is one Spann child, Joe, who was born after that.
The book came about when a lady tried to figure out how two men with the name Brasfield were related.   Turns out they were each related to a different brother who were
both in VA in the 1700s.
            All four of Sadie's daughters' husbands have also passed away.

        Fred was a Lt. in the Army Air Force, shot down in the Ploesti Air Raid, missing in action, then Prisoner of War for two years. Also was vice-president of Escambia County Bank, Flomaton,
Alabama.

        When Fred and Nellsene were first married, they lived in Frisco City.  After the war, they lived with Mr. and Mrs. Nelson in Century.  Then they moved to Pensacola, and Fred worked at
Sears.  Later he came to work at the bank with his father.  Later, his brother, Carl Jones was appointed as a director of the bank--Escambia County Bank.  Fred became vice-president of the bank.

        GA put the following on the WWII website:
        "First Lt. Fred Jones was a bomber pilot of a B-24.  His airplane was shot down during the air raid on the Ploesti oil fields in Rumania.  He was declared missing in action, but later it was
discovered that he was a prisoner of war.  Fred was a prisoner of war for two years.  He received the distinguished flying cross for his participation in the raid on Ploesti."

        Lt. Jones was the pilot of the "Available Jones" B-24 bomber listed as missing after an August raid.
        Nellsene was the daughter of Laurence Franklin Nelson and Sadie Brasfield.  She married Fred Houston Jones on Nov. 20, 1938.  They had three sons:

Jasper Brantley "J. B." Cleveland
        Mr. Jasper Brantley "J. B." Cleveland, 87 of Dalton, GA, passed away Tuesday February 22, 2011 at Hamilton Medical Center.
        J. B. was born March 6, 1923 in Coosa County, AL to the late Julius Brantley and Alberta Harris Cleveland.
       He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-nine years and the mother of his children, Eva Abernathy Cleveland; brothers, Robert Allen Cleveland and James Harris Cleveland;
sisters, Mildred McDonald and Julia  Kathryn Childers.

        J. B. served his country in the European Theater during World War II. After the war he returned to Sylacauga, Alabama where he began his career in the textile industry.  As an
employee of Avondale Mills, he learned the dyeing process of textiles.  His reputation as an expert in this field traveled to Dalton where the carpet industry was getting into full swing.  He
took a job with one of the carpet mills as a dyeing technician but soon decided that he wanted to be in business for himself.

        He was a partner in several businesses related to the carpet industry and developed special techniques for dyeing and printing carpet.
        He loved to travel and sightsee and was able recently to retrace his journey as a soldier through Belgium, France, and Germany.  He loved gardening, and his neighbors and friends
loved picking blueberries from his patch of bushes.

        J. B. has been involved in many civic activities and has made many worthwhile contributions to the community.  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Elks, and the
First United Methodist Church of Dalton.

        J. B. loved people and has enjoyed the association of many friends throughout his life. He enjoyed himself most when he was with his family of whom he was very proud. He will be
greatlymissed.

        He is survived by his [JMG: second] wife Carolyn Farmer Cleveland; children and step-children, [JMG: I believe the following three to be children of J. B. and Eva Lavada Abernathy

Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Craig Jones, David Butler, Cody Padgett, Ty Tipton, Jared Butler, Jason Butler, Robert Lacefield, Jerry Lacefield, Curtis Lacefield, and Jon Lacefield serving as pallbearers. Irvin R. Butler, known to many as "I. R.", was born December 26, 1918, in Ardmore, OK, and died December 25, 2010, in Amarillo, TX. Mr. Butler grew up in Elida, and joined the New Mexico National Guard at the beginning of World War II. He was deployed with the 200th Coast Artillery unit to the Philippine Islands where he was captured by the Japanese. Mr. Butler was one of a handful of Bataan Death March survivors remaining in New Mexico. He was held captive by the Japanese for 3 1/2 years in the Phillipines before being liberated.

For a short time after returning home, he owned a pool hall in Elida. Soon, he started a dairy south of Portales, and later moved closer to town. After several years, he later became a grounds keeper for the Portales Public Schools. He continued running a few cattle on his land until the time of his death.

Mr. Butler had been a member of the Portales Masonic Lodge for more than 55 years, and of the American Legion for over 50 years.

He is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas and Gale Butler of Lake Jackson, TX, Bob and Kim Butler of Portales, Frank Butler of Cedaredge, CO, and Ted Butler of Portales; three daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara Butler of Albuquerque, Diane Butler of Albuquerque and Betty and Bruce Lacefield of Liberty, TX; 12 grandchildren, Michelle (Craig) Jones of Houston, TX, David Butler of Austin, TX, Ami (Cody) Padgett of Portales, April (Ty) Tipton of Portales, Jared (Tamara) Butler of Redvale, CO, Jason Butler of Wheatridge, CO, Robert Lacefield of Manassas, VA, Jerry Lacefield of Crestview, FL, Renne Lacefield of Dallas, TX, Curtis Lacefield of Ft. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Chieves and J. R. Butler; four sisters, Mary Blanton, Margie Clark, Ella May Pearman, and Charlcie Harrison, and a great-grandchild.
