The updating of the numbering system used on this page has been completed. Generation 28 is my own;
27 is that of my parents; 29 is that of my children, etc.  --   John M. Gwin, July 2009

The reformatting of the name font and census data for this page has been completed. --John M. Gwin, Aug 2011

Welcome to our House Family page!
Sources:

01.  Some information collected herein has been provided by James Bassett Gwin II, some of which he obtained from Memorial Record of Alabama in 1950, but much was sent by...

02.  ...Third-cousin-once-removed  Stephanie Lynn "Stevie" Johnson Jenkins in e.mails to John Gwin in and since March 2000. And now to start off 2010, Stevie sends us photos of George and Francis as well as of her own family--thank you, Cousin!

03.  Click here to see some photos I took in Jan 2002 of House-related tombstones in the region of eastern-central Alabama while touring with my second cousin, Jack Vardaman.

04.  In Feb 2007 we heard from Patricia Ann Watrous Hasenmueller who volunteered some corrections (shown below in this green)--thanks, Patricia! :-)

05.  In 2009 we began adding data from various census enumerations. And as the red note at top states, I have also renumbered the individuals on this page to correspond to those numbers of the same generations on my other pages in this site.

06.  In Jun 2013, many thanks were sent to Jim and Janet Fazekas who found the page and shared some much appreciated corrections and additions--including the wonderful photos from their collection.  James, like Stevie (source 2 above) is my 3rd cousin once removed; he is Stevie's 3rd cousin.

07.  In Dec 2020 I added at least one photo to the late
Steve Johnson's FindAGrave.com memorial for George.  I was sorry to hear he had died.  I have included George's obituary from the memorial Steve created for him.

[John M. Gwin Note--4 Dec 2020:  I have included here the short bio that the late Steve Johnson found and added to his FindAGrave.com memorial for George.  With Steve's passing, maintenance of George's FAG memorial has been taken up by Kelby Johnson.]

"George went to war on May 22, 1862.   He was with General Lee at Appomattox at the surrender.  George and his brother, William, walked all the way home to Alabama, two of very few survivors from the area.  George was a member of Company C, 2nd Battalion, Hilliard's Legion, Alabama Volunteers."
Please note that Steve Johnson's FAG memorials now appear to be maintained by Kelby Johnson.  The last name indicates that Kelby may be related to Steve.  This bio updated by John M. Gwin.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Anyone having information, photos, corrections and stories they would like included, PLEASE feel free to contact me so I can include it. I want nothing more than for the memorials I manage to be the very best and most complete memorials on FindAGrave.

OBITUARY
Kenneth Dale Skuffeeda was born 6 June 1932 in Clay Co., AL to Carl and Myrtle (Dooley) Skuffeeda and died following a brief illness surrounded by his family on 12 Aug 2014 in Eureka, CA.
The Skuffeeda family moved from Lorain, OH to Longview, CA in 1947.   Kenny attended R. A. Long High School, graduating in 1950.
He attended Lower Columbia College while working part-time at Long Bell Lumber Co.  In 1952 Kenny began his 42-year career with Long Bell International Paper.  He spent his last 20 years as a heavy equipment operator in the chip and log export division, retiring in 1994.
He leaves his wife of 37 years, Jeanette; two daughters, Glenda Wheeler and Marty Elmore (Bob); three stepdaughters, Carol Ann Mahaffey, Janice Buckner (George), and Jeanne Gray; a nephew, Phil Lovingfoss; a stepsister, Pat Roland; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Myrtle; a brother, Raymond “Skuffy”; his stepmother, Alice Skuffeeda; and a granddaughter, Kari Dudley.
Kenny had a love for Formula One car races, antique cars, bowling, collecting “stuff,” antiquing, and camping.  He participated in local car shows and swap meets and enjoyed driving--around town and in the local Unique Tin Car Cruise--the 1936 Chevrolet pickup he built.
He was a passionate traveler, visiting all of America’s 48 contiguous states, Alaska, and seven Canadian provinces.  Kenny and Jeanette enjoyed many winters in Casa Grande, AZ.
Kenny Skuffeeda was a loving husband, father, and friend to many. He was a genuinely cheerful soul, and his ready smile and laughter will be missed.  He never knew a stranger.
Light refreshments will be served at a gathering in Kenny’s memory from 1 to 3 p.m. on 28 Aug 2014 at the Local 21 Longshore Hall, 617 14th Ave. in Longview.  We hope you’ll join us.

Sylacauga, AL – Mrs. Raye N. Downing, age 85, passed away peacefully at home July 1, 2012. She was born at Gantts Quarry, Ethel Raye Neighbors and was the youngest surviving child of Oliver and Pearl Neighbors. She grew up in Sylacauga and married Neil James Downing on June 26, 1953. After living a short time in Decatur, GA and Marysville, TN, she returned to Sylacauga with her family in 1961.

She was a long time kindergarten teacher at First United Methodist Church. Her students were one of her greatest pleasures. Travel was another passion with family and friends. She visited Cuba, Canada, Europe and most of the United States. For many years she loved fishing with her husband and sharing Lake Martin with her family. She loved and embraced all life and nature with a smile and a laugh. She was thrilled equally with the smallest bird and the largest sunset. Listening to Gospel music made her beam and she lived her life to the fullest. Raye was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings: Clyde Neighbors, Levis N. Chambers, Doris N. Killian and Floyd Neighbors.

She is survived by her three children, Dr. Michael Downing, wife Connie and their daughters Michelle, Lauren and Shannon; Tammy Downing Puckett, husband Brent, and their daughter, Zoie; Randall Downing, and his son, Ridge and daughter, Shaylyn.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 5 at 9:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Sylacauga. A funeral service will be at 11:00 AM with Rev. Lewis Archer and Dr. Ted Spears officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the FUMC of Sylacauga Kindergarten, 105 East Spring Street, Sylacauga, AL 35150.   Memorial messages may be sent to the family at www.radneysmith.com.  Radney-Smith Funeral Home will direct the services.

Oh and by the way, we're expecting a new House "cousin" in July!
Take care!
Stevie

Mr. House is my late great-great grandfather. His tombstone is in Brownsville Cemetery in Hollins, AL. He was born in January 1, 1836 and died February 23, 1917, of injuries he sustained when a tornado came through Hollins. He was sitting in his favorite willow limb chair on the porch. Hope this helps.

Houses Whose Relationships to
George Voulentine House
Are Not Yet Apparent

[John M. Gwin Note:  Following are contributions by several individuals who have contacted me regarding whether or not their House relatives are related to our House relatives.  While we have not yet found any such connections, I gladly list them here in the hope that others who may have those connections will contact us and share them.
One very interesting clue is the name Meldora which appears several times in these various lines--including ours (see George and Frances' second child, above)--and which I have highlighted each time in this blue.]

Nicholas Christman was my father-in-law's step-grandfather. The Christman family migrated to Olmestad Co. in Mn and later to Renville Co. They had land from the New Ulm Land office which turned out to be a military reservation (No internet in those days, or fax), so they moved to Watonwan County. Nicholas looks very much an Indian. He was loved dearly by the Lewis brothers.

Hi
I found my name at this site; does this mean that I am a descendant of George Valentine House?
Thank you.
Nell Ann McDaniel, granddaughter of Luther Martin Vaughter
Thank  you,
Ann
Hi Ann--thanks for writing--good to meet you!
No, it does not necessarily mean that you are George V. House's descendant. Evidently you are related to the people named in this red outline; however, these names have been contributed by people who are related to SOME Houses, but their connection to us is not yet apparent. Happy hunting!

Comments: My sister, Patricia Hasenmueller, forwarded you some information on the family of David Orton Knight, our maternal grandfather, in 2007. The information shows Paul Knight as marrying "Mary". Mary's surname was "Love".

I was doing some research on my Family Tree and came across your page.  I was looking for information on my paternal grandmother Johnnie Francis Knight.  On her death certificate it lists her parents as David Orton Knight and Ollie V Bennett.

I am writing to let you know of a correction to be made and also seeking more information on my Knight relatives.

Johnnie Francis Knight married Jake Bradford Stevens.   Jake was the son of George Madison Stevens and Lucy Belle Carpenter (Stevens).  Jake was my paternal grandfather.

He and Johnnie are buried together in Brush Creek Tennessee.  I have documentation and picture of the grave if you would like any copies.

I know that these are not really direct descendents of your line seeing as how Johnnie Knight was a child of David's first marriage.  I do thank you for having this information available online though, as I did not know that David had been married a second time.

My husband is a descendant of the Albert Elias House family and we have done research for many years and have some information you can plug into your outline.  All of the dates are documented and the tombstones have been observed in th Brownville Cemetery. BTW-it is the Brownville Cemetery, not the Presbyterian Church Cemetery.  That is a common mistake because they are side by side, but are governed by two different entities. So please change any Presbyterian Church Cemetery to Brownville Cemetery, County Road 7, Clay County, AL.

Let's work on an update concerning the children of W. E. and Charity, re: stillborn daughter and Antoinette House.
Re: stillborn daughter-- I have a copy of a letter written by a ? Vardaman in May of 1860 to John F. Vardaman which says

"There have been four infants buried at Smyrna in 10 days, one was Mrs. Crawfords, another Benjamin Catchings wifes, William Houses wife, another J. Barnettes wifes child all of which newborn infants".

(There is no marker in the Smyrna Cemetery for this House infant.)  So, please correct your comments concerning this infant.  (Your comment about the four-year gap between Antoinette's birth and John Henry's was most probably because W. E. was away fighting in the Civil War.)

Re: Antoinette--the spelling is off in various records, but she is definitely the oldest child of W. E. and Charity, b 18 nov 1862-Alabama, d 30 may 1934-Arkansas; married 12 nov 1882 to Lewis Presley Long, b 20 jan 1862; d 23 apr 1935-Arkansas; both buried in Unity Cemetery, Ashley County Arkansas.  These dates were found on their tombstone in Unity Cemetery. 8 children
