An Interesting Discovery:

As some of you know, we have a theory that suggests that three groups of Gwins may have descended from one Virginia family.  (See more on that theory here.)  Joy descends from the Group One Gwins of the theory, and her late husband Hal descends from the Group Three Gwins of the theory!  And if the theory is correct, she married her own cousin from perhaps as many as eight or nine generations back.  And that means that Hal Junior and his sister are not only siblings but also cousins!

When and under what circumstances did Isham move to Colorado Springs?
How did he die at age 30?]

In June 2004, while traveling through Colorado Springs, we stopped, found his grave, and took this photo, right.

Isham G. Gwin

[John M. Gwin Note:  Fifth cousin Danny Gwin found this handwritten note and sent me a copy.  It reads:

Wilsonville Ala Oct 26/05
To the Hon Judge of Probate
Chilton Co., Ala
You are hereby authorized
to issue marriage licens
on demand to I G Gwin Jr.
I G Gwin Sr, Father

This is clearly our family.  I. G. Gwin, Jr., would have just turned 17 years of age and may have needed
just such a document as this from his father to marry Hattie Bolding, who would have been about the same
age as Junior.    We know that Junior had developed or would soon develop a respiratory condition of some sort
that would require him to move to a higher altitude.  He and Hattie moved their family to Colorado Springs, Colorado,
where he died 17 Oct 1918 and is buried.                                                                   Thanks for sending this, Cousin Danny!]

Cousin,

My son and I took a "road trip" on his Spring Break last month, and we happened to ride through Gastonburg, AL, where my grandfather lived.  I showed him the plot of ground (now occupied by run-down trailers) where he lived, and visited the old town cemetery where my uncle is buried.  My grandfather, as you may know, is buried in Morrell, Arkansas where my father was born.
Keep in touch, if you will. All the best.

John and Suzette, 2014

[John M. Gwin Note--16 Jun 2020:  I have copied the following obituary from Cousin John's good FindAGrave memorial.]
OBITUARY
Dr. John Michael Gwin, 64, beloved husband, father, and professor, passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at home in Chapel Hill, N. C. with his wife Suzette by his side.
John was born June 21, 1949 in Montgomery to Irma Rebecca and Emmett Brindley Gwin.
He graduated from Fairhope High School. A lifelong learner and teacher, Dr. Gwin's degrees included a B.S. from Auburn University, M.B.A. from the University of Georgia, M.S. in counseling and psychotherapy from the University of South Alabama, and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He married Pamela Jane Blair in 1970 and had two sons. She passed away in 1998, and he would meet and later marry Suzette Burkhart.
Dr. Gwin devoted many of his years to
teaching, which included roles as a professor of commerce at the University of Virginia's
McIntire School of Commerce, professor of marketing and global business at the University of Mobile, and adjunct professor of educational psychology, engineering leadership and interdisciplinary studies at the University of South Alabama.  He also served as a visiting lecturer to the Universite' de Paris-Sorbonne, and was a Fulbright Scholar at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.
A member of the American Mensa organization, Dr. Gwin worked as a consultant for the World Bank, the Allied Irish Bank and several Fortune 500 companies.
Following the death of his first wife, Dr. Gwin returned to his childhood home in Fairhope, where his parents Irma and E. B. had owned and operated the Bedsole & Gwin
department store. There he married Suzette, and they raised a joyful, blended family.
Dr. Gwin enjoyed international travel and took every opportunity to get out into the world. He was an avid golfer in his earlier years, and spent a lifetime fascinated by cars and auto racing.
Credited with having a profound and positive influence on many of his students, Dr. Gwin also enjoyed the company of his family and lifelong friends from Charlottesville, Fairhope, and around the world.
He rarely stopped teaching for a moment, always willing to provide advice and a helping hand to those in need.  He equally enjoyed a quiet room to read and research his interests and could often be found pursuing new and varied intellectual topics.

Dr. Gwin was an active member and
volunteer at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Daphne prior to moving to Chapel Hill.
Dr. Gwin was preceded in death by his
parents,  Irma  and   E. B.;   and  his   first   wife,
Pamela.
He is survived by his wife, Suzette; sons Colin (Jennie) Gwin and Connor (Emma) Gwin; stepdaughter Jessica (Marlon) Lewis; stepson Jerry (Nicole) Burkhart III; step-granddaughters Ashton and Aubrey Goundas; and step-grandson Devin Lewis.
A celebration of life service will be held on the June 28, 2014, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Daphne.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Building Fund, 28788 North Main St., Daphne, AL 36526.
Arrangements are by Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Durham, N.C.

Railroad foreman My dad, Adrian S. Gwin, told that once, after his father had been killed in a train wreck, this cousin and a team of railway workers came to their house in McDowell and built them some playground-type equipment in their yard for them to play on, including a teeter-totter made from railroad ties. Emmett and many other of the cousins went out of their way to be father-figures for them.

Ancestry.com has this cousin marrying in 1950 in Wilcox Co., AL, to some unnamed sweetheart.

[John M. Gwin Note:   In June 2003, Ms. Mary Elizabeth Tinney Hill of Wilsonville, AL, responded to an article I had posted to several list serves.  It turns out that her Tinney family of Wilsonville knew my Gwins of Wilsonville, and she has quite a bit of information about my family.  One item is the picture, below, of the students at Wilsonville School.  On the back are two sets of comments identifying most of the students and telling some things about them.  These two sets of comments are transcribed by me below the picture.  The student closest to the camera is William Arthur "Tony" Daniel who married Mary Edith Gwin, my first cousin twice removed (26.05 above).]
