[In her 1992 letter to Roy L. Smith, Linda Derry said she had "some ads from the Dallas Gazette that mention the wagonshop of William J. Smith and Chesley Gwin in Liberty Hill."  We now have documented proof that "Liberty Hill" was not a town but rather the name of the post office in the Town of Athens--how strange is that?!  And sure enough, the census of 5 July 1860 of "Liberty Hill, Athens Beat," Dallas Co., AL, lists the C.R. Gwin family as living in residence #266, with the family of Wm. J. Smith living next door in #267.  (And now that we think about it, it's not strange at all, since the city of Athens, Limestone County, AL, was established BEFORE the town of  Athens, Dallas County, AL, and mail addressed to one Athens could easily be confused with the other, so naming the post office in the town of Athens "Liberty Hill" would be the only possible way to justify keeping "Athens" as the name of the newer town.)]

[The 1860 Census of Athens Beat, Liberty Hill Post Office, Dallas Co., AL, on 5 July lists C. R. Gwin, 33, wagonmaker, with real estate valued at $800 and personal property at $6425, b. in AL; wife M. F. Gwin, 29, b. in AL; and children W. J. Gwin, 8, male; J. I. Gwin, 6, male; and Enoch Gwin, 2, male, all b. in AL.]

[The 1880 census of Dallas Co., AL, lists C. R. Gwin, age 53, a white, married, male, living in Browns, AL, with his wife, P. B., age 45, and a son, C. J., age 14.  I believe this is Chesley Richard for at least these three reasons: his age matches, his wife's middle initial B. could easily be for Blevins, and Browns is only about 9 miles nw of Bogue Chitto and less than a mile e. of Belvue where Chesley's grand-nephew (and my grandfather!) James Basset Gwin was born  21 Apr 1872.]

[Mary Bell Guin, d.o. C.R. and M.E. Guin, listed as b. 1 Mar 1856 and d. 22 Jun (no yr), and her brother John I. Gwin (Dec. 24, 1853 - Oct. 4, 1907),  are bd. in the Bell Family Cem., e. of Rt. 5 on the county rd. at Weissinger Lakes, about 3 mi. s. of Browns, Dallas Co., AL; I visited this cemetery in Jul 2003 and again in Jul 2004 and took these pictures.]

[JMG NOTE:  Chesley is the maiden name of the wife, Sarah, of the alleged patriarch Richard Gwin.  Uncle James used this fact to reinforce the alleged reliability of the Richard Gwin story.  But according to one transcriber, in his diary, Rev. Cotten calls him Charley more than once, with no mention of Chesley. Was Cotten hard of hearing, misinterpreting Chesley for Charley?  Or could the full name have been Charles Chesley Richard Gwin?  Could the transcriber have misread Charley for Chesley?  Charley, in Cotten's 22 March 1850 entry, was "getting married tonight to Miss Bell at Bogue Chitto".
(A few months before my dad, Adrian S. Gwin, died, I asked him where Bogue Chitto is, and he said he guessed it was somewhere on Bogue Chitto Creek, which his family had to cross every time they went from McDowell to Selma and back--he said it's pronounced BOH-guh CHIT-uh Creek).  Sure enough, in January 2002, several miles west of Cahaba on County Road 180, I found this community and walked through the graveyard of one of the old churches there.]

[John M. Gwin Note: Working under the theory that girls who married in these days generally stayed in the vicinity of their parents' homes, and having found Chesley and Patty in Browns, Dallas Co., AL, I did a search for anyone by the name of Fannie living in Browns in 1880.  In the white population, there were only two: one was a daughter living with her parents, and the other was a Fannie G. Leiser, age 19, wife of A. P. Leiser and mother of a ten-month-old daughter, Kate G. Leiser.  I followed this Leiser family in the hopes of finding some evidence that this would be our Fannie, perhaps even Chess or Patty living with them in their old age.  Voila! She has a son named C. Gwin Leiser (wanna bet his name is Chesley Gwin Leiser?), and she's living next door to her dad, Chesley R. Gwin, and stepmom, Paralee Gwin, in 1910 in Browns, Dallas Co., AL!]

BIOGRAPHICAL GLIMPSES

Earl Campbell Horan, Jr. was born into the military family of Colonel Earl and Margaret Horan. His formative years were spent in Alabama, where his father was Professor of Military Science and Commandant of Marion Military Institute.  Earl was so eager to join the Army that at 17 he joined the Alabama National Guard as a truck driver.  Earl completed two years of college at Marion Institute before fulfilling his dream of attending West Point.  Earl was a gifted athlete in high school and was sought after by many of the Southeastern colleges.  His love of sports continued through his cadet days to his officer days, during which he was outstanding in the field events of Europe’s track and field competitions.  In his 40s, Earl began running marathons, which was a testimony to his athletic skills and perseverance.
Earl arrived at West Point tall, talented, laid back and full of humor.  He truly was one of a kind and treated plebe year as an adventure not to be missed.  His levity in Beast Barracks brought all of us new cadets comic relief, which unfortunately was coupled with many pushups, although Earl was seldom caught.  When Earl would march us as plebes from North Area through South Area enroute to the academic buildings, he had the ability to bring the upperclassmen located in South Area to the point of a frenzy. His antics throughout the four years endeared him to his classmates but were not always well received by the Tactical Department.  Consequently, early on Earl became a member of the Century Club. There was a Don Quixote quality to Earl, because he never failed to see windmills that needed to be tilted, yet never at the expense of others.  He was an excellent athlete, a good student (at least when the chips were down), and he had a few experiences with the Academic Department.  Earl possessed one annoying trait, at least to his roommates: he always attracted the best-looking girls.  He was a talented musician with the guitar and enjoyed four years with the Glee Club, appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show among other highlights.  Music was very important to Earl, and he played and sang whenever possible, and his room in the barracks was never dull.
Upon graduation, Earl joined the Infantry.  After completion of the Infantry basic course and Ranger and Airborne schools, Earl was enroute to his first assignment in Berlin, Germany, only to be met on the drop zone after his final jump by the lovely Leiser Chandler from the University of Alabama, whom he had been dating for a couple of years.  Leiser led him in his airborne fatigues to the Justice of the Peace in Cusseta, Georgia where they were married.  Thus began a wonderful love story, only to be interrupted after Earl’s retirement by the untimely death of Leiser.
At his first assignment in Berlin he worked at both Check Point Charlie and Spandau Prison. After Berlin, Earl’s career followed the usual pattern of young Infantry officers in the 1960s and 1970s: Berlin; Fort Bragg, NC; Vietnam; Fort Benning, GA; Vietnam; ROTC; then Fort Campbell, KY; followed by Fort Leavenworth, KS; Japan, Leavenworth, Bragg, and Grenada.  It was during his first assignment at Fort Bragg that Earl became Special Forces qualified and experienced his first combat tour in Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces.  Earl returned from Vietnam to Fort Benning in 1966.  While there he became very involved with the cast and crew making the film The Green Berets.  The director was so taken with Earl that he named the fictitious SF camp in the movie after Earl’s camp in Vietnam.  Earl taught John Wayne how to be a Green Beret.  Not a bad accomplishment by a young captain.  Throughout his career, and especially in combat, Earl displayed calm leadership and coolness under fire, which earned him numerous awards for valor, including the Silver Star.
In addition to his combat tours with Special Forces and the Phoenix Program, Earl served as a company commander at the Infantry Center at Fort Benning. He was the assistant PMS at Murray State in Kentucky.  Later, he was the S-3 of the 3d Battalion, 187th PIR, 101st Airborne Division.  After attendance at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Earl was assigned to IX Corps at Camp Zama, Japan.  He returned to Fort Leavenworth on the faculty of CGSC.  His next assignment was to XVIII Airborne Corps, where he was assigned as the deputy G-5.  While with XVIII Airborne Corps, Earl participated in Operation Urgent Fury.  Earl commanded the stay-behind force that helped the governor to stabilize Grenada.  His actions in that capacity were so widely applauded that Earl became one of the Army’s foremost authorities on civic action, especially in a special warfare environment.
Earl’s final assignments were with the Special Warfare Center School, culminating as the deputy assistant commandant.  It was in this last position that Earl was instrumental in establishing Special Forces as an independent branch within the Army.
After retirement from active duty, Earl and family remained in the Fayetteville, NC area.  There Earl became active in real estate, his church, AUSA, Kiwanis, and numerous civic and charitable organizations. He continued his love of music by playing the mandolin in the bluegrass band Foggy Mountain Boys.
Earl was more than just a great soldier and a multitalented individual.  He was a loving husband and father whose accomplishments and zest for life where often overshadowed by his humility and understated approach.  He was a remarkable and memorable individual who enriched the lives of all with whom he had contact.  They can’t help but smile when they hear Earl’s name.

[listed as C. J. Gwin, 14, in the 1 Jun 1880 census of Browns Pct., Dallas Co., AL]

[John M. Gwin Note: Anna Todd states that the 1910 census of Browns, AL, shows Chesley and Paralee as being married in or about 1868 (married 42 years in May 1910); therefore, it is likely, in my opinion, that Fannie died either in childbirth with this C. J. Gwin or shortly thereafter, and that Paralee married Chesley at least partly because of his need of someone to help care for the children.]

Subject: Possible match for C J Gwin born c.1866

Hello John,

I happened across your web page today.  I have a Chesley James Gwin in my family tree that I think might be a match to the C J Gwin you have listed on your page, although at this point I cannot say with 100 percent certainty that this person is the same C J Gwin.

I've pieced together the following information using census records and what little information my father has been able to share.
My great-grandmother's second husband was Chesley James Gwin, born ca. 1866 in Alabama.  By my calculations (using the 1910 census) he married Elizabeth "Bessie" Flynn Boyd, born c. 1863 in Ireland, about 1902, somewhere in northern California. Prior to that (per the 1900 census) Bessie Boyd and her two sons lived in Sonora Township, Tuolumne County, California.

The 1910 census shows Chesley, Bessie and Robert (my grandfather) living in Contra Costa County, in the unincorporated town of Bay Point.  They had been married for 8 years at that point and Bessie had given birth to four more children (none of whom lived past early childhood.)

By 1920 they had moved to Alameda County, to the city of Berkeley.  In this census Chesley is listed as Charles W. Gwin and he worked as a grocer.  Bessie and Chesley appeared one more time in census records; in 1930 they were still living in Berkeley and owned the grocery store.

My father tells me that Bessie and Chesley moved in with my grandparents in the early 1930's, not long before they died (both from cancer, Bessie on 5/21/1934, Chesley on 12/31/1936.)  They were cremated, and for years their ashes sat on a shelf in my grandparents' garage.  Eventually the ashes were spread on a mountain side somewhere in Northern California (not sure of the location.)  No personal effects of Bessie or Chesley [are known to] remain.

I'd love to know where Chesley was between the time of the 1880 census and the time he married my great-grandmother.  I doubt I'll ever be unable to uncover anything, though.

I hope that this information is of use to you.

Hi John,
I recently made the discovery of Chesley Gwin's marriage date to my great-grandmother Elizabeth Flynn.  According to the Tuolumne County (California) Index of Marriages 1875-1910 they were married on August 26, 1903.  I sent a request today for the marriage certificate and hope to have it soon.  Maybe this will be the confirmation that we've been looking for--hopefully the certificate will include information regarding Chesley's parents.  If it does, I'd be happy to scan a copy to you.

Hi John,
I did research this morning: Chesley R. Gwin and his wife Paralee were still alive at the time of the May 11, 1910 census of precinct 29 (Browns), Dallas Co., AL, ED 86, p. 192.

Hi John,
Attached is a picture of Chesley Gwin with his wife Bessie and my uncle John Boyd.  The negative that the picture came from wasn't in the best condition, but the picture doesn't look too bad.  My uncle was born in Fresno, California, in 1924, so I'm guessing that this picture was taken in 1925.
I hope all is well with you!
Take care,
Anna Todd

I can understand why the census taker wrote Charles: Chesley might have said "Chahsley" with an Alabama accent, and the writer misunderstood him to say "Charley" and wrote "Charles". But how he could have mistaken "jay" for "double-u" is beyond me.

You have a great "Gwin" web page.  Thanks for sharing all your hard research work with the public.

I have additional info that you might like on "Paralee Blevins (Cook) Whitfield" who was widow of Bryan Whitfield (also spelled "Bryant") -- 1st Lt., Co. G, 9th AL Inf. They married in 1861 at St. Thomas Episcopal Ch. in Greenville, Butler Co., AL, and he was killed in action C.S.A.

Bryan Whitfield was born 1833 in NC, son of George Whitfield b. 1804 NC (see several Ancestry.com family trees with this family). His uncle (great uncle?) Nathan Bryan Whitfield, built antebellum mansion "Gaineswood" in Marengo Co., AL.

Info from Another Chesley Gwin Line

[John M. Gwin Note: I contacted Fillmore "Fil" Gale Guinn of Midland, TX, this morning (4 Feb 2006) who may prove to be my fourth cousin, if not my 6th or 7th. He sent me his gedcom data which I have transcribed into my format as follows.]

22.00--Isham Gwin, b. ca. 1770 in VA; d. 1830 in Orange Co., IN; m. Mary Canterbury;

23.00--John Gwin, b. 7 Nov 1792 in the Carolinas; d. 7 ____ 1877 in Wilsonville, Shelby Co., AL; m. Jane Walker;

Fil, it is at this point in your genealogy--between generations five and four  going backwards from you--that I wonder if you have perhaps gotten some overlap into one of the "other Chesley Gwin" lines. It looks to me as if you are approximately where I was three years ago in 2003 when I decided to go to east Tennessee and see if I could find anything on Isham. [Everything I found then (and have found since) is posted on my page for Isham. I have also found quite a bit on John's youngest son and my gg-granduncle, Chesley R., and his wife Mary Frances Elizabeth "Fannie" Bell, most if not all of which is posted here on this page.] Let me explain about these "other" Chesley Gwins.
A couple of years ago, my double-fourth cousin, Barbara Ward, and I decided to pool our research on the various Chesley Gwins (all spellings of Gwin) we had discovered and produce a page trying to tie as much of it together as we could. The result is on a page I had built earlier for a Chesley Gwin who married a Levinia Clay in Alabama. I refer you to that page in the hope that you may find things there that will help you confirm your connections to either one family or the other. It is our strong belief that all these Chesley Gwins started with one couple: Richard Gwin who married Sarah Chesley near Jamestown, VA, around 1760-1770.

So, whether you descend from the Chesley Richard of Alabama (b. ca. 1828) who is the son of John and Jane of Tennessee and Alabama (my ggg-grandparents) or from the Chesley Richard of Arkansas (also b. 1828!) who is the son of another Chesley Richard and Levinia Clay of Georgia and Alabama, I welcome you as cousin, Cousin, and look forward to a lifetime of working together on this amazing family puzzle!

Some Correspondence with Fil Guinn and this Branch of the Family:

Philip [Fillmore]:
Here is a short history of my family. I hope that it helps.
My father's father was Eli A. Guinn, born in Conway, Arkansas in 1880.
He had four brothers, three of whom were named Henry, Tom and John B. Guinn.
My father's mother's maiden name was Harp.
My father, Fillmore Chesley Guinn, was born in Vamoosa, OK in 1911 and shortly after he was born, the family moved to Guthrie.
They continued to move around some and lived in Muskogee, Konawa, and finally settled in Ada.
He had one half brother named Eli A. Guinn, Jr. who was a career military man.
As you would expect, he moved around quite a bit but returned to Ada when he retired.
My dad and my mother, Sibyl Lee Hubbert, were Ada High School sweethearts.
They married in 1937 and moved to Houston due to the lack of career opportunities in Ada.
I was born in 1939 and my brother, Bartley M. Guinn in 1941 in Houston.

Hi Chuck,
Eli A. Guinn Sr. was married to a Girtie Harp and had your Dad, Fillmore Chesley Guinn and your aunt Alma Belle Guinn.
My dad, Eli A Guinn Jr.’s mother was Effie Eilzabeth Hix and they also had a daughter Kathrine Belle Guinn.
Eli Sr.’s parents were Chester (or Chesley) Guinn and Amanda J. (unknown).
I have census information with Eli Sr. 28 years old in January of 1910 which would mean that he was born in 1881, not 1880.
Chester and Amanda had 7 children, 6 boys and one girl.
The information I have is from a Joan Guinn Eaton, granddaughter of Eli Sr.’s brother Richard B.
The children were Eli, Frank, Tom, Ferd, Richard B., Henry, and the daughter was Hattie Bell.
I have information that Chesley Guinn’s father was Chesley Guinn; his mother was Fannie Bell; they also had a daughter, Fannie.
Chesley Guinn Sr. parents are John Guinn and Jane Walker with John Guinn’s father name being Isham Guinn.
I am planning to meet with Joan in Muskogee in August to get more information.
I have tried to email you with the address you left in another post, so if you read this, my email is fillmore@grandecom.net.
If anyone has any more information, please feel free to email me. I will give you anything I have as well.

A typed transcription of the following newspaper advertisement was sent to my double-4th cousin Roy Lester Smith by Ms. Linda Derry, Director or the Cahawba Project, Dallas Co., AL, sometime in the early 1990's.  I received a copy of it in January 2004 from double-4th cousin Barbara Ward.

William J. Smith and Chesley R. Gwin, while being business partners, are also related as follows: Chesley is uncle to William's wife, Mary Jane Gwin Smith, so Chesley is William's uncle by marriage. William was born ca. 1832, and Chesley was born ca. 1828, so, while Chesley is older by about four years, they are still about the same age.

More Concerning Chesley J. Gwin, son of Chesley R. Gwin

Subject: Re: Fwd: Possible match for C J Gwin born c.1866

Hi John,

...I received Chesley's death certificate a couple of months ago...His place of birth was given as simply Alabama, no city or county (my grandfather provided this bit of information on the death cert.)  His date of death was 31 Dec 1936 in Berkeley, CA...I did find  one negative of Chesley and my grandmother that I'd like to scan and email to you also, as soon as I learn how to use my new scanner!

Thanks again,
Anna Todd

Hello again, Anna!

...I believe your CJ and my CJ are VERY likely the same person...I think we'll probably stumble over some documentation of it someday...By the way, have you seen the pictures from the old (1840's-1880's) photo album Cousin Barb Ward has?  Chesley Gwin's parents, brother, sister, and several nephews, cousins, inlaws, and even one Outlaw are there, plus many more.! They're online at http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/Index2PhotoAlbum.htm.

Best to you,

Hello Anna--great to hear from you--thanks for writing!        :-)

Hello John,

...I have a Chesley James Gwin in my family tree that I think might be a match to the C J Gwin you have listed on your page, although at this point I cannot say with 100 percent certainty that this person is the same C J Gwin.

Sure does look good, though, doesn't it? The dates of birth are the same, the birth states are the same, the initials are the same. If they are the same, then my Chesley's middle initial J was for James, and likely it came from the Bell side of the family.  Maybe one of Fannie's brothers was a James.

They had been married for 8 years at that point and Bessie had given birth to four more children (none of whom lived past early childhood.)  By 1920 they had moved to Alameda County, to the city of Berkeley.  In this census Chesley is listed as Charles W. Gwin and he worked as a grocer.

Whoa--I have questions at this point. Why was the name changed?
Surely this would not have been a transcription error, would it?
And why would the middle initial be so different?
Bessie and Chesley appeared one more time in census records; in 1930 they were still living in Berkeley and owned the grocery store.  My father tells me that Bessie and Chesley moved in with my grandparents in the early 1930's, not long before they died (both from cancer, Bessie on 5/21/34, Chesley on 12/31/36.)  They were cremated, and for years their ashes sat on a shelf in my grandparents'
garage.  Eventually the ashes were spread on a mountain side somewhere in Northern California (not sure of the location.)  No personal effects of Bessie or Chesley remain.
Let's see: If your CJ and my CJ are the same, then you and I are related like this, if I have everything right:

John Gwin m. Jane Walker
parents
John Gwin m. Jane Walker
William Gwin m. R.C.J. Wilson

Chesley R.Gwin m. "Fannie" Bell
Wm. Sutton Gwin m. I.E. Basset

C.J. Gwin m. "Bessie" Flynn Boyd
James Bassett Gwin m. A.B. Vardaman
2nd cousins
Robert Gwin
Adrian Sutton Gwin m. D.L. Keeney
3rd cousins
your Gwin parent
John M. Gwin m. S.L. Hamrick
4th cousins
Anna Todd
I'd love to know where Chesley was between the time of the 1880 census and the time he married my great-grandmother.  I doubt I'll ever be able to uncover anything though.

I hope that this information is of use to you.

Anna Todd

I'm looking forward to hearing from you again, Anna!
Your "potential 4th cousin",
In Jesus,
John

Subject: Chesley Gwin, 1900 census

Well, I finally found Chesley Gwin on the 1900 census, under the name Chesley J. Guinn.  He was living in Lumberton, Pearl River County, Mississippi. It doesn't look like there were any family  members living with him in Lumberton.  The other boarders in the household seem to have all been railroad workers.  I'm assuming that Chesley came to California between 1900 and 1902 because the 1910 California census shows that he and my great-grandmother had been married for 8 years.

...Shortly after the turn of the century, Lumberton, located in the north part of the county, withdrew from Pearl River County and was annexed to Lamar County.  For the time, this deprived Pearl River County of a saw mill industry...

... By 1927 most of the county's timber had been cut and the residents turned to truck farming and raising fruit.  Picayune was the Peach center, even holding a Peach Festival each year...

MRS. W. E. MASSEY, PIONEER RESORT CLUB WOMAN, DIES
Past UDC President had been ill for several weeks (Picture on p. 6)

Mrs. Annie Guinn Massey, 76, one of the best-known club women in Arkansas, died unexpectedly yesterday afternoon at her home, 738 Quapaw Ave.

Mrs. Massey had been ill for the past several weeks, but had returned home 10 days ago from St. Joseph's Infirmary where she spent more than a week. At the time she was fatally stricken yesterday she was sitting in bed talking with members of her family.

Mrs. Massey, born here in 187, (My notes: "part of date missing") the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chesley Richard Guinn, among the early white settlers in Hot Springs, was a past president general of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and had served as state and local president of the UDC. At the time of her death she was serving as historian for the Hot Springs chapter and was planning the annual UDC essay contest among high school pupils.

Mrs. Massey was instrumental in the organization of the Annie Guinn Massey chapter, Children of the Confederacy, which was named in her honor.

She had also served as local and state president of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a former president of the Arkansas Pioneers Association. She was also a member and past president of the Fortnightly study club of Hot Springs.

At the time of her death she was serving the DAR chapter here as chairman of the national historical magazine and as national defense chairman. On the state board of that organization she held the position of genealogist.

Mrs. Massey was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where she was deacon emeritus. She worshipped with the congregation of  (continued on page 6)

Hi Chuck,
Eli A. Guinn Sr. was married to a Girtie Harp and had your Dad, Fillmore Chesley Guinn and your aunt Alma Belle Guinn.
The children were Eli, Frank, Tom, Ferd, Richard B., Henry and the daughter was Hattie Bell.
I also have information that Chesley Guinn’s father was Chesley Guinn and his mother was Fannie Bell and they also had a daughter named Fannie.
Fillmore (Fil) Guinn

Hello John,
You may already have this information.

Here is a link for Confederate records in Alabama Archives. http://www.archives.state.al.us/civilwar/search.cfm

Chesley GWIN comes up three times under the following names.

1. Chesley R. GUIN
2. Chesley R. GWIN
3. C. R. GWINN
He was exempt from Confederate service because he was a wagonmaker, but he served anyway in Capt. A. W. Ellerbe's Dallas County Home Guard. He was captured at the Battle of Selma.

His widow, Pattie B. GWIN, applied for a pension in Shelby County on 29 JAN 1916.
According to FamilySearch IGI Individual Record, Chesley married Pattie B. WHITFIELD in Dallas County on 21 DEC 1870.

Best Regards,
Mark Hall

324/355 Gwin Enoch WM22 boarder S Clerk in store AL AL AL I really believe this to be the son of Chesley and Fannie Bell Gwin. He is living in Mississippi with the family of James H. Foster (36, a merchant, IN, Eng, IN) and Henrietta Foster, (34, IN, IN, IN) and their 3 sons: J. Riggs, (11, OH, IN, IN); Guild C., (9, IN, IN,. IN); and Matthew, (2, MS, IN, IN). Could this family somehow be related to the Gwins through Isham and Mary Canterbury Gwin, seeing that they all come from Indiana?
