SOURCES:

1.  First is the GEDCOM of Deanna Falletich sent in by double-fifth cousin Mike Walker, below.  The 1850 census data, below, uncovered since Mike first submitted this and I started this page, reveals that this could not be our Mary Ann Canterbury Gwin.

2.  In Feb 2010, Rayma Hartman sent us the beginnings of her family line.  Hopefully we'll learn one day how she is related!

3.  In Sep 2010, 5th Cousin Jim Wall found the marriage certificate of our Isham Gwin and Mary Canterbury.

4.  In early January 2014, 5th cousin Mike Fryman found this record of Mary Ann Canterbury's line including her two alleged marriages, allegedly first to John Temple and second proven to Isham Gwin.

I took a couple of weeks off of my Walkers and Gwins to do some research for a completely different line of Walkers for an old friend. When I came back to my family, I picked up the following on ancestry.com.  Could Mary Ann Canterbury b. 1758 be our Mary wife of Isham Gwin? The source is Deanna Falletich.  I hope this message finds you and yours happy and healthy in 2006.

I don't think so.  I just now put two and two together and saw that in the 1850 census of Orange Co., IN, excerpted and summarized below, our Mary Canterbury Gwin, Isham Gwin's widow, is living with her daughter Minerva and family in what I think is probably the old homeplace.  Mary is blind and reports her age as 80, making her year of birth ca. 1770, some twelve years later than this Mary Ann Canterbury.

This is Minerva "Manervy" Gwin: widow of Mr. Wright, tenth-born child of Isham and Mary Canterbury Gwin, sister of Elizabeth Gwin who married David Denton (res. 35 above, this census), and sister of John Gwin who moved to Alabama and is my ggg-grandpa. Two scenarios stand out to me: either she has invited her mother, Mary, to move in with them to spend Mary's last years, or--and I believe this is more likely--she has moved back to the old homeplace to take care of her mother in Mary's last years.

In 2001, Ms. Doris Gyarmati posted on the Childers Family Forum that Minerva's husband's name is Elijah (see note immediately below).

The pioneer ancestor Isom Gwin/Gwinn, Guinn, Sr. descent was born Virginia between 1767-1770 and has marriage bond dated August 30, 1787, in Montgomery County VA to marry Mary Canterberry. He came to Crawford County Indiana by 1819 from Tennessee. He was a minister of Providence Baptist Church in Crawford County Indiana from October 1819 until his death about December 1830. Prior to that he was the minister at Bethel Church in Crawford County where on April 12, 1824, he performed the marriage of his son, Richard W. Gwinn, and Nancy Watkins at Harrison County Indiana.
