The reformatting of the name font and census data for this page has been completed. --John M. Gwin, Jan 2014

Return to my Genealogy Home Page

Most of the material on these Keeney pages was originally taken directly from the excellent work of my late first cousin once removed
Roscoe C. Keeney
in his 2,597 Keeney Relatives and its related after-followings.

Roscoe's many years of diligent, reliable research on these family lines
served as stepping stones for many more family members' searches!

In Oct 2010, Anna Pinter, Uncle Dan's granddaughter and my own 2nd cousin, has contacted me with more data on her line.
Now in Oct 2012, Brian Williams, possibly a great-great-grandson of Uncle Nick, has contacted me with more data on his line.

Please be patient, as I've not finished transcribing
Roscoe's enormous work to these pages yet--thanks!

One of those related after-followings, a special issue of the Keeney Update, March 1987, includes a preface which numbers the generations beginning in America.  The first ancestor mentioned in that preface is unnumbered. However, I, John Gwin, in searching for a way to align ALL my lines, am renumbering them, starting with my own generation as 28. All others will go forward or backward from there. That leaves us plenty of room to work backward without having to stop and say, "Rats. I wish I'd started with ten instead of nine." And maybe we're being optimistic, but in this rapidly expanding world of the internet, who knows how soon and how far back we'll find ourselves? So 28 it is.

[John M. Gwin Note--29 Oct 2021:  Tonight I am adding, below, a poem I wrote in the summer of 1970 when I was stationed at Biggs Field, Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX.
Entitled "Gold, Silver, and Precious Stones", it is based on the Scripture passage in I Cor. 3:10-15 and is dedicated to this Robert H. "Uncle Bob" Keeney.  My mother, Dorothy Lee "Dot" Keeney Gwin-- daughter, niece, and cousin of homebuilders--drew up the plans for the new house she and Dad wanted to build, and she asked Uncle Bob to build it.  And together with his two sons, Bob and Tom, they did just that in the winter of 1960-61 at 7 Keiffer Drive, St. Albans, West Virginia.]

Gold, Silver,
and Precious Stones
        For Uncle Bob Keeney

My granduncle built our house,
And because it was going to be ours,
He'd send back all the faulty materials
To the lumber and supply company
To be exchanged for the best they had.

He had the blueprints for that house,
And nobody knew those plans as well
As Uncle Bob did.  As a result,
Our house is the best one on the block.

There's Someone Else Who sort of works like that.
Right now He's working on my new house.
As soon as I realized His blueprints
Were better than the ones I had,
I turned the whole job over to Him.

And because I know it's going to be the best,
I'm not so unhappy when I've asked
For something to go into the house,
And His answer is a gentle, "No, send it back."

Obituaries

Rev. LeRoy M. Keeney

The Rev. Dr. LeRoy M. Keeney, 83, of St. Albans, died at home June 9, 2004, after a long illness.

He was retired as pastor from the Highlawn Baptist Church, having served from 1949 until 1986. Following his retirement, the Rev. Keeney served as interim minister for the First Baptist Church of Dunbar, the Main Street Baptist Church of Point Pleasant, and Calvary Baptist Church in Charleston.

He graduated from Charleston High School, attended Alderson Broaddus College, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Morris Harvey College in 1943. In 1946 he graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Alderson Broaddus College in 1973 and served as a member of its board of trustees for over ten years.

The Rev. Keeney served as president of the West Virginia Baptist Convention in 1965, its centennial year. For over 30 years he was a member of the West Virginia Baptist Executive Board. He served over 25 years as president of the West Virginia Baptist Education Society, which grants 50 scholarships annually to students preparing to enter the ministry. The Rev. Keeney was a founder of the St. Albans Ministerial Association and served as its president. He was a member of the St. Albans Rotary Club and also served as its president. He was chairman of the first committee to develop the Parchment Valley Conference Center. For many years, he was a volunteer chaplain at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

The Rev. Keeney is survived by his wife of 62 years, Theresa Knapp Keeney; daughter, Rebecca Palmer and her husband, John, of Charleston; son, Stanley Keeney and his wife, Martha, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; beloved grandchildren Morgan Griffith and her husband, Dave, of Charleston, Campbell Palmer and his wife, Suzanne, of Falls Church, Va., Mary Beth Keeney and her fianc Chad Gunerra, and Brian Keeney of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and great grandchildren Amanda Jane and Michael Griffith, and Jack Palmer. His last surviving sister is Mrs. Wirt (Frankie) Harmon of Paris, Tenn.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, June 12, at Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans, with the Rev. Joe Hyde and the Rev. Cyril Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Highlawn Baptist Church.

The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Virginia Baptist Education Society, c/o Dr. Lawrence Hoptry, Corresponding Secretary, P.O. Box 248, Nitro, WV 25143; or to Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Avenue, St. Albans, WV 25177.

The family expresses thanks to Hospice for its care of Rev. Keeney, and to Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, for handling the arrangements.

This is my granduncle Roscoe Conkling Keeney, Sr., son of John Stires Keeney and Hannah Catherine Frazee and brother of my grandfather, McDonald Keeney. This is Maggie Paxton, now the bride of Granduncle Roscoe Keeney. Until seeing this census, I'd never heard her called anything but Maggie. Perhaps her given name IS Maggie and the enumerator speculated that this was a nickname and recorded Margurette. On the other hand, this being her first census as an adult, she may have given the enumerator her real first name, a rare occurrance.

This is my granduncle Robert Keeney, "Uncle Bob", as I knew him. He and his two sons, Tommy and Bobby, built our house at 7 Keiffer Drive in St. Albans. I got to watch and help them build it the winter of 1960-61. My mother, Uncle Bob's niece, designed the house, and they built it from her drawings--without an architect's blueprints.
