[John M. Gwin Note:
The
family
of
a
Will H. Houston,
miller, age 32, of res. 1060, fam. 1056, Keyansville
P. O., Twp. 63, Gentry Co., MO, is listed in the 21
Jul 1860
census, with wife Jane, 32; son Ezekel, 11; dau.
Nancy, 5; and son John, 3. The same family
appears again on 27 Jun 1870 in Whitesville P.O.,
Platte Twp., Andrew Co., MO, as follows: William,
physician, 42, b. IN; Jane, 42, b. IL; and ch., all
b. MO: Ezekiel, 21, physician, m. in Jan 1870;
Nancy, 14; John, 12; George M., 8; Bell, 2; and a
female, Margaret, 20, m. in Jan 1870--clearly w/o
Ezekiel. However, on 10 Jun 1880, it
appears that tragedy may have struck, as the two
youngest children in 1870, Geo. W. and Belle, now
appear as nephew and niece in the Cooper Twp.,
Gentry Co., MO, home of their uncle Silas (has to be
the b/o William) 56, farmer, b. IN/DE/DE, and wife
Cinderilla, 50; with ch. Nancy, 20; Isaac, 18; and
James, 9. Having now brought this research
through three census records, it now appears that this William is NOT
our William, since his parents are
both b. in Delaware.]

OBITUARY
Fred Ray Little, long-time resident
of Ditch Valley, was born on the tenth of
March 1937 in Buffalo, OK to Houston
Marvin and Mary Ellen (Williams) Little.
He passed away October 24, 2021, at his
home.
Fred
grew up on the family farm. They milked
Holstein cows, grew alfalfa, wheat, oats
and barley as crops. He shared his
father's love of horses, so there has been
a small band of Quarter Horses on the
place to this day.
He
started his schooling in Englewood, Kansas
and graduated from Rosston High School
with the class of 1955 and was a proud
member of the state championship
basketball teams of 1953 and 1955. Upon
graduating from high school he attended
Oklahoma State University and received his
Bachelor of Science degree in Animal
Science. Many life-long friendships
started at Stillwater and continue to this
day. In 1957, he and Joyce Ann Hayes
were married. They celebrated 64 years of
marriage on September 6 of this year
[2021].
After graduating from college, Fred
started working for American Breeders
Service and traveled all over the United
States and Canada buying bulls for their
breeding program. This job started his
long career in sales. He had a knack for
the sales industry and could sell
anything. Opportunities at home led him to
be a full-time farmer and rancher with his
dad and brother. Later in life, he also
worked for the Oklahoma Department of
Agriculture and was a cattle buyer and
attended sales locally as well as in
Colorado, putting loads together for his
customers.
He
was very community minded, serving on fair
boards and working at the state and
national level on agricultural issues.
Milk Association meetings, Farm Bureau and
Farmers Union conventions, and
relationships with the Cattleman's
Association and the Pork Council allowed
Fred and Joyce to travel all over the
country speaking on behalf of our
industry.
His
health issues in later years prevented him
from having what many would consider a
normal life. Yet with the help of his
loving wife and caretaker, he was able to
persevere and handle it with a sense of
humor and grace.
Fred
was a member of the Rosston United
Methodist Church. He never met a
stranger and would carry on conversations
with anybody. He loved making phone
calls to friends and neighbors and loved
watching Cowboy basketball, especially
when they were good!
He
is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Ann
of the home; children, Vic and Melva
Little of Fort Supply, Rhonda and Tony
Smith of Depew, Alan and Angie Little of
Bristow and Doug and Debra Little of Ditch
Valley; sister, Glenda Riddle of Cedar
Falls, IA; and sister-in-law, Deloris
Little. He is also survived by twelve
grandchildren, twenty-one
great-grandchildren, four
great-great-grandchildren, and numerous,
nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and a
host of longtime friends.
Fred
was preceded in death by his parents; his
parents-in law, Lloyd and Hazel Hayes; his
brother Charles Little; and his sister and
brother-in-law, Lila and Jack Mann.

OBITUARY
Ralph Edward Filby,
age 86, passed away Jan. 8, 2002 in
Kearns, Utah.
Born to Charles D. and Zella
Houston Filby on December 7, 1915 in
Junction City, Kansas, he married
Elma Riggs on May 25, 1945, in
Oakland, California. Their marriage
was later solemnized in the Salt
Lake LDS Temple on June 29, 1989.
Dad was surrounded by members
of his loving family and his wife of
57 years. He was proud that he
served his country in World War II
and was honorably discharged. Dad
had a constant thirst for technical
knowledge throughout his life.
He was considered a world class
tinkerer. Mom and dad were each
other's constant companions and
greatest love. They raised their
boys with commitment, love, and
sense of duty, and taught them
respect for all. Dad's family gave
him his greatest joy, and he loved
them all dearly. Dad kept his sense
of humor, which he had all of his
life, until his last hours. He loved
to play music (he also sang in the
church choir) and to do artwork,
which is displayed in his home. His
legacy will live on in his sons and
grandchildren.
He is survived by
his wife; sons: Lloyd (Susan) of
Sandy; Carl (Lynn) of Magna; and
DeVon (Jennifer) of Kearns; 12
grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren;
brother, Donald (Lois)
of Kansas; and sisters, Betty
Baity of Texas; and Doris Irvine
of Kansas. He was preceded in
death by his parents; daughter,
DeDria; one grandson, Troy;
brother, Charles; sisters,
Patricia and Audrey; and a very
special brother-in-law, Gerald
Quilter.
Dad fought the good fight and
finished the race, and he will await

Hello
James, I am the ggg-granddaughter
of John B. Houston and Mahala
Gwin. I
am was very interested to see your
posting. Do you have references for
primary sources for this info? I am
descended from Isham (Isom)
whose daughter Rachel Mahala
married Marshall Waters.
FYI, April 6 is National Tartan Day,
and there is a Houston tartan,
although it is not historic. I
believe it was created in the 70s.
The Houstons are my only Scottish
line; I think having a tartan is
really fun. Hope to hear from you,
will be glad to exchange
information. Cathy
Hines-Boulton
And now Cathy
writes with more on her line:
Hi John, Nice to
meet you. My descent is through
Mahala and John's son Isom,
who married Sarah
Ann Bowen. Their daughter was
Rachel
Mahala Houston, obviously
named after her grandmothers, Mahala
Gwin and Rachel Johnson. Rachel Mahala
"Haley" married Marshall E.
Waters. Their son Harvey L.
was my grandfather. My
mother got the Rachel but was spared
the Mahala! My
grandfather, Harvey L. Waters,
was first married to Annie Pritchard;
they had two children, Lee Truett and
Elizabeth.
Annie
died,
and
he
married
Lillian
Crosby Jenkins.
Their children were Virginia Ruth and
Rachel
Juanita. My parents: Rachel J. Waters
and George D.
Hines. When I married Robert Boulton,
I just added his last name to
mine. Cousin Cathy

24.04--Sarah A. "Sally" Houston,
b. 8 Jan 1838 in La Grange, Buckhorn Twp.,
Brown Co., IL, the first white birth in the twp.;
d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.
[listed as
Sally A. Houston, 11 and b. in IL, in 30 Oct 1850
census of Beverly, Adams Co., IL];
The
settler was John B. Houston
[Mahala Gwin], a brother-in-law of
William L. Dehart. He came the
1st of April, of the same year, and
located on the northeast quarter of
the same section. Mr. Houston
was also from the same county in
Kentucky, and came to this state in
1831, and stopped for a short time in
Morgan county. He and Dehart came from
there to La Grange together. He
had a family of eight children, six of
whom are yet living, none of them,
however, in Brown County. His daughter
Sarah,
born January 8th, 1838 was the first
[white] birth that occurred in the
township. Houston
left
here
in
1847
and
subsequently
moved
to Missouri, where he died. ...
"Squire and
Uriah [I?] Houston,
brothers of John B. Houston, were
also early arrivals. Squire Houston
came from his native state to Morgan
Co. in 1830, and to Brown with his
brother John B. in 1833, locating at
La Grange. In 1838 he purchased and
settled on land in section
twenty-two. About 1845 he
traded his place for the Kerragan
mill, on section thirty-four, which
he operated until 1852. He
died March 1882 in the eighty-second
year of his age. He reared a
large family. Isaac,
Uriah (II?), John, Isom G., and
Minerva, wife of P. G.
Butler, are living in the township,
and Malinda, wife of Silas
Reeves, resides in Elkhorn.

There seems to be
very little infomation available about James'

Houston. So I ran a search in Pike Co.,
IL (where she was living in 1900) for ANY
"Goldie" of this age in 1910, and the
following surfaced. I'll use this purple
table as a place to collect everything we find
about her (or someone who might be she).
