Private HARVEY S. BROWN, Co. B & Co. C, 86th Illinois
Harvey S. Brown was born on July 4, 1838 in Pittstown or Troy in Rensselaer County, New York, the son of Royal H. Brown and Alida (Potter) Brown. Royal was born on September 8, 1813 to John Brown and Polly (Spaulding) Brown. John Brown was born in Heath, Massachusetts on July 18, 1771 to John Brown and Lucy (Rugg) Brown. John and Polly (Spaulding) Brown had 4 children. John passed away on March 3, 1833 in Raymertown, New York and his earthly remains were laid in the Hillside Cemetery in Pittstown, Rensselaer County, New York.25.03--William P. Royal H. Brown was married to Alida Potter on __________ __, 183__ at __________, New York. Alida was born on March 2, 1815 in __________, New York, the daughter of __________ Potter and __________ (__________) Potter.
At the time of the 1850 census, the Brown family is found in Watson Township of Lewis County, New York;
Royal H Brown M 37 New York; Olida Brown F 36 New York; John Brown M 13 New York; Harvey Brown M 12 New York; William Brown M 10 New York; Sidney Brown M 2 New York; Orson Eldria M 32 New York;
About 1856, at the age of 18, Harvey S. Brown apparently struck out on his own moving west to Wisconsin, where he settled in Albion, Wisconsin. There he attended the Academy. He remained there for two years. In 1858 he moved to Illinois where he settled in Peoria County near West Hallock, Illinois. In the 1860 census of Peoria County, Harvey Brown cannot be definitively located. There is a Henry Brown, age 21, born in New York, working as a farmhand on the farm of Bartholomew and Cornelia Noyes in Elmwood Township in Peoria County, but, this is as close to the correct information that I can find.
At the time of the 1860 census, the rest of the Brown family are still found in Watson, Lewis County, New York;
Royal H Brown 46 New York; Alida Brown 45 New York; Sidney S Brown 12 New York; Clark L Brown 8 New York
In the early 1860's, the Brown family came west to Illinois to join Harvey here in Peoria County. They, too, settled in the West Hallock area of Peoria County. Royal H. Brown died on Oct. 23, 1862 and his mortal remains were laid in the West Hallock Cemetery in Peoria County.
At the time of the 1870 census, Aleda is found residing with her son, Harvey S. Brown, and his family in Akron Township of Peoria County, Illinois;
Harvey S Brown M 32y Farmer 5,000 700 New York; Rosa A Brown F 26y New York; Ella Brown F 3m Illinois; Aleda Brown F 55y New York; William Potter M 13y New York;
At the time of the 1880 census, Aleda Brown is found residing with Lucretia Green in Hallock Township in Peoria County, Illinois. Aleda is listed as Widowed and is working as a House Keeper. Her father is listed as having been born in Rhode Island, while her mother is listed as having been born in Connecticut;
Self Lucretia Green F 88 New York; Other Alida Brown F 65 New York
Alida died on Mar. 10, 1891, and her mortal remains were also laid in the West Hallock Cemetery.
Now to continue with the biography of Harvey S. Brown.
On August 13, 1862, Harvey S. Brown went to Marshall County, probably Henry, Illinois where he volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in the Henry, Illinois area of Marshall County, by a man by the name of Elias C. Brearley for service in the Union army. At the time he volunteered he listed Akron Township of Peoria County as his place of residence.

When Brearley had about 100 volunteers, he led the Marshall County company into Peoria where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, Brearley and 88 of his volunteers, including now Private Harvey S. Brown, were mustered into service as Co. B of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Brearley was elected Captain of Co. B.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, down to the railroad depot. There they were joined by the men of the 85th Illinois, who had been mustered into service at Camp Peoria. There at the depot, the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois boarded trains bound for Camp Joe Holt in Jeffersonville, Indiana, which was located across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky.
The trains carrying the men of the 85th and 86th arrived at Jeffersonville, Indiana on the morning of September 9th, and the men of the regiments began to drill almost immediately. On September 10th, Privates Harvey S. Brown, Ansel Crouch and ____ ____ were transferred from Co. B of the 86th to Co. C of the 86th, most likely at their request, because Co. C was full of men recruited from the Chillicothe area, including Medina Township and ____ Township. Company C was commanded by Captain Joseph F. Thomas, who before the war was a Physician in the Chillicothe, Illinois area.

By early October, the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, in pursuit of Confederate troops. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more to come. After the Battle of Perryville, the Confederate troops withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee where they would go into winter camp.
The men of McCook's Brigade would spend the winter of 1862/63 in Nashville and remain based there through the spring and early summer of 1863. The life for these new troops was difficult as the living conditions, life style and diet were not conducive to good health. Today, the Nashville National Cemetery is the final resting place of hundreds of union soldiers who died during that first winter in Nashville.
In the late summer of 1863, the men of McCook's Brigade participated the early movements of what would become known as the Campaign for Chattanooga, Tennessee. On September 19-20, 1863, the men of McCook's participated in the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, a union defeat. It is not known if Private Harvey S. Brown was with his company during this battle, as just over a month later on October 29, 1863, Private Harvey S. Brown was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps (V.R.C.).
The Veteran Reserve Corps, which was originally called the "Invalid Corps", was a military reserve organization created within the Union Army during the Civil War to allow partially disabled or otherwise infirmed soldiers to perform light duty, freeing able-bodied soldiers to serve on the front lines. Why Private Harvey S. Brown was transferred to the VRC is not known. He is not listed among the wounded from Chickamauga. Perhaps he was sick back in Nashville at the time of the battle, or perhaps he was injured in some way during the campaign for Chickamauga or during the battle itself. Whatever the reason for his transfer, Private Harvey S. Brown would spend at least part of the remainder of the war in the VRC. How long Private Harvey S. Brown remained in the VRC is not known, either. Perhaps he served out the remainder of the war in the VRC. It just is not known at this time. What is known is that Private Harvey S. Brown survived the war and was back in Peoria County by the fall of 1864.
Harvey S. Brown was married to Rosey A. Potter on November 19, 1865, in Peoria County, Illinois. Rosaline A. "Rosey" Potter was born on April 14, 1844, in Berlin, Rensselaer County, New York, the daughter of Riley Potter and Phebe (Green) Potter. Three children were born to Harvey S. Brown and Rosaline A. (Potter) Brown:
1. Ella G. Brown, born April/May __, 1870 in Peoria County, Illinois. Ella was married c. 1890/91 to Alfred S. Burdick. At the time of the 1900 census, Alfred and Ella are found in Hinesdale Township, Hinesdale vill., DuPage County, Illinois. They have been married 9 years and have not had any children. They are believed never to have had any children; A S Burdick Head M Feb 1867 33 New York; Ella Burdick Wife F Apr 1870 30 Illinois
Alfred S. Burdich/Burdick died on February 11, 1933 in Highland Park, Lake County, Illinois. He was born on 15 Feb 1867 in De Ruyter, New York, the son of Stephen Burdich, who was born in Preston, New York, and Susan Maxson, who was born in Alfred, New York. Alfred had been employed with Pres.-Abbott Labratories. Alfred's mortal remains were laid in the Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on February 15, 1933. Nothing more is known for certain about Ella G. (Brown) Burdick. There is a Ella B Burdick, who was born in 1870 in Illinois living in St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida in the 1945 Florida state census. She is 75 years of age. Could this be she?
2. Etta Alida Brown, born May 2, 1874 in Peoria County, Illinois. Etta died on March 4, 1880 in Peoria County and her mortal remains were laid in the West Hallock Cemetery in Peoria County, Illinois. See her Find A Grave Memorial# 25490984.
3. Riley Potter Brown, born February 10, 1879 in Peoria County, Illinois. Riley was married on July 17, 1902 to Sarah Charlotte "Lottie" McWilliam. Sarah was born on July 18, 1880 in Grand Junction in Greene County, Iowa. Sarah died on June 20, 1926 in Boy River, Cass County, Minnesota. Two daughters were born to Riley and Sarah, one dying in infancy: A. Ora L. Brown, born c. 1902/03 in Illinois; B. Ella Brown, born and died in 1906.;

Riley Potter Brown died on January 19, 1965 in Cass County, Minnesota. His mortal remains were cremated at the Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, but CREMAINS WERE RETURNED, so they were not buried Lakewood. See his Find A Grave Memorial# 35507344.
4. Mary Ethel Brown, born October 1, 1880 in Peoria County, Illinois. Mary Ethel Brown never married. Mary Ethel Brown died on October 12, 1932 and her mortal remains were laid in the West Hallock Cemetery in Peoria County, Illinois. See her Find A Grave Memorial# 25490973.
At the time of the 1870 census, Harvey and his family are found in Akron Township in Peoria County, Illinois: Brown Harvey S. 32 M Farmer 5,000 700 New York; Brown Rosa A. 26 F New York; Brown Ella 3/12 F Illinois; May Brown Aleda 55 F New York; Potter William 13 M New York;
At the time of the 1880 census, Harvey Brown and his family are found in Hallock Township, Peoria County, Illinois. He is married and is listed as a Dealer In Horses. Both of his parents are listed as having been born in New York: self Harvey Brown M 40 New York; wife Rosa A. Brown F 36 New York; daughter Ella G. Brown F 10 Illinois; son Riley Brown M 1 Illinois; other Nancy Marwood F 19 New York;
In 1887, some of the surviving members of the 86th Illinois organized and held a reunion of the old 86th during the week of August 27th, the 25th anniversary of the mustering in of the men of the 86th. Harvey did not attend this 1st reunion, though more than 110 surviving members of the 86th did. The reunion was such a success that they continued to he held every August through 1923, when the few who were able to attend that reunion tearfully decided that they were too few and too old to continue to hold them. Through the years, Harvey was able to attend the 1890, 1892, 1900 and 1901 reunions.
In 1893, Harvey and Rosa moved the family to Wisconsin, where they settled in Milton, Wisconsin.
In 1898 they moved to Whitewater, Wisconsin, where they remained until Harvey's death.
At the time of the 1900 census, Harvey and Rosa are found in Ward 3 of Whitewater City, Walworth County, Wisconsin: Harvey is listed as having been born in July of 1838 in New York. His parents are both listed as having been born in New York. He and Rosa are listed as having been married 34 years: Head Harvey S Brown M 62 New York; Wife Rosa Brown F 56 New York; Son Riley P Brown M 21 Illinois; Daughter Mary E Brown F 20 Illinois.
Harvey S. Brown died on May 8, 1902 at __, Wisconsin. The following obituary was found in the "The Sabbath Recorder", Vol 58, No 21, p. 334 that was published on May 26, 1902:
"Harvey S. Brown was born at Pittstown, Rensselaer Co., N. Y., July 4, 1838, and died May 8, 1902. He was the son of Royal H. and Alida Potter Brown. In 1862 he enlisted in the 86th Illinois Infantry and remained in the army for about two years. He married Rosaline A. Potter, daughter of Riley and Phebe Green Potter, Nov. 19, 1865. They had four children, three of whom, with the widow, survive him: Mrs. Alfred S. Burdick, Riley P. Brown of Chicago, and Miss Ethel Brown of Whitewater. Rosaline A. (Potter) Brown died on February 5, 1939 in Ravina, Illinois. "The Sabbath Recorder", Vol 126, No 13, p 220, Mar. 27, 1939 had the following obituary;
"Rosaline Potter, wife of the late Harvey S. Brown, was born in Berlin, N. Y., April 14, 1844, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alfred S. Burdick, Ravina, Ill., February 5, 1939. Though confined to her room for the past eight years, she retained all her alert mental faculties, interest in people and events, together with her charming sense of humor.Rosaline's mortal remains were returned to Peoria County, where they were laid to rest in the West Hallock Cemetery in Peoria County, Illinois. See her Find A Grave Memorial# 25490989.
While young she became a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church at Berlin, and later at West Hallock, Ill., remaining loyal and faithful to that fellowship until her death. Her daughter Ella, Mrs. Alfred S. Burdick, survives, and one son, Riley P. Brown, of Boy River, Minn. Two daughters preceded her - Alida in 1880, and Mary Ethel in 1932. Mrs. Brown was tenderly cared for by her daughter and was laid to rest in the West Hallock cemetery. H. C. V. H."

Sarah Charlotte McWilliam, familiarly known as 'Lottie,' was a daughter of D. P. McWilliam of Milton, Wis. When she was born, July 18, 1880, the family lived at Grand Junction, Iowa. They continued to live there until Lottie was 20 years of age and had become a member of the Seventh Day Baptist church at that place. In the year 1901, the family moved to Milton.
She was married to Riley Brown July 17, 1902. Mr. and Mrs. Brown lived for two years in Chicago, seven years in northern Wisconsin, and for the last fifteen years they had lived at Boy River, Minn., where Mrs. Brown died June 20, 1926. The body was brought to Milton where the funeral service was conducted at the home of her parents by Pastor James L. Skaggs on Wednesday afternoon, June 23, and burial was made in the Milton cemetery.
Two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Brown. One died in infancy. The other, Ora. L., was present with her father at the funeral.
Mrs. Brown was one of a family of ten children, and she is survived by eight: three brothers and five sisters. Two of the brothers, Ervin and Darwin, and a sister, Clara, live near Milton. The other brother, Arthur, is at Tillamook, Ore. The other sisters are Belva, of Boy River, Minn.; Bertha, of Plainfield, N. J.; Ella, of Palo Alto, Calif.; and Moleta of Stoughton, Wis. Mrs. Brown is also survived by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Davis, Milton, and by many other more distant relatives.
She was known for her devotion to her family, her consideration of friends, and her kindness of heart. God's great world with its life and beauty held a great fascination for her. She is gone, but she will be affectionately remembered by those who have known and loved her.

[Mike Brown Note: Elizabeth's maiden name is Truelove, sometimes spelled Trulove. I believe they may have met in AZ as there is a Sidney Brown operating a saloon with his oldest brother John in the 1880 census, although Sidney's age doesn't match. Elizabeth may have been there visiting family, an aunt named Louise Davis, that she grew up with in CA after her parents died. Elizabeth's father, William, was a prospector who died in 1869. I don't know what year Sarah died. I can't locate her in the 1870 census, which by then her children are living in CA with their grandfather, Joel Davis, Sarah's father.
Concerning Sidney S. Brown, I have not been able to locate him in the 1870 census. It would be interesting to see if the 22 year old was still in NY or had started his way west by that time. My info on Sidney in the 1880 census is speculative and unconfirmed, but it is the best lead I have at this time. I am also stumped on the next generation beyond his parents, Royal H. Brown and Alida Potter. Royal named his first born John, Sidney's oldest brother. I found the names John Brown and Polly Spaulding in NY, who had a son named Royal H. and who was born in the correct year, but I have been unable to find enough information to confirm it's our Royal.]

Subject: Bertha Ann Brown
Bertha Ann Brown was my grandmother. She died right after she had my mother Ruby Frieda Luft (4th child). I have been trying to find information on her. My mother recently passed away, and I didn't get who my grandmother's parents were and where they were born.
After my grandmother died, my grandfather remarried and had another child, Doris Luft. As it stands, all my aunts and mother have passed.
Thank you for your page; I was going off in the wrong direction. I do have family tree on Ancestry.com named the Cavanaugh Family. I currently have 1400+ entries.
26.06--Lester Sylvester Brown (my grandfather), b. 15 May 1895 in NE; d. May 1969; m. on 6 Feb 1924 in Compton, CA, to Georgie Louise Dodds (b. 4 Sep 1904; d. Oct 1989); 3 ch.

[age 24 in 19 Jan 1920 census of Armona, Kings Co., CA, where he is a single man and a laborer living with Royal E. and their mother Elizabeth A.]
[Kathy Brown Douglas Note: My grandmother's name ... was actually "Georgie." My dad told me that she was named for Uncle George (but we're not sure how he fits in--my dad thought he was another brother of Leticia/Lettisha). Also, Uncle Alfred was Leticia's brother, but the info says that his name is James Albert, so now I am confused.]

I have listed census records here in two different formats. First
are summary transcriptions of copies of the
original census records transcribed by Ancestry.com,
some of which may have been mistranscribed.
Because I was in a hurry at the time, I
simply cut and pasted them from Ancestry.com immediately
below
to
at
least
get
some
of the data (names and ages) onto this page.
Second
are my own transcriptions of copies of the
original census pages. These include more
data than simply the names and ages of the
parties as in the summary trancriptions.
These are listed below the summaries in
charts with this pale yellow background.
While they take longer to add, I believe
they may be more valuable because of the
additional information.

Dead giveaway! I searched the 1850

It appears that she is actually the daughter of
the household head, Riley, and wife of Riley's
son-in-law, Harvey. Rosa is Riley's daughter, so
if my earlier specualtion is correct (that Riley
and Alida are siblings) then Rosa and Harvey are
first cousins, perhaps putting Ella and Riley B.
at risk for genetic deficiencies/defects. I hope
their descendants turned out well. |

It appears that she is actually the
daughter of Harvey and Rosa, thus the granddaughter
of the household head. This is
H&R's firstborn (we believe); however, with
no more children showing for ten years, we may
assume that several have died very young,
leading us to believe that others may even have
preceded Ella in birth; therefore, their
marriage could have been even earlier than July
1869. |

I decided to include this family
because the last name, GREEN, is the same as
Lucretia's, residence #170 above, and he's also
from NY. He could be a
grandson of Lucretia and thereby a first cousin
to Harvey. On the other hand, there are MANY in
this census who were born in NY; in fact, it
looks like an entire trainload of Illinois
settlers may have made a mass exodus from NY
together! Who knows--maybe they're ALL
related... A quick scan search of this census has turned up another GREEN family--Jefferson, 50 (NY/NY/NY); wife Mary, 41 (IL/MA/MA); daughters Hettie A., 17, and Sarah M., 15; granddaughter Mollie Ovesen (Overen?), 1; an elderly Nelson couple (who are likely Mary's parents--MA/MA/MA). And living next door is an Overen/Oveson family--and on and on it seems to go! Are they all Brown relations? Another thought: the father of Sidney Brown's wife, Elizabeth Truelove Brown, is William Green Truelove. |

This is our John Clark Shaw.
Considering what we may have
learned in the 1930 census, this is the only
entry I've found that: 1. has him b. 1903 in OH, 2. has his father b. OH, and 3. has his mother b. England. Further, the location is on the way to California... Now we have his parents' names, ages, PsOB, even a brother, etc. |

Dorcas' name, his initials, and the

the right family. Granted,
they're not proof, but I'm convinced.
Therefore, I'll move forward, looking for John

I came
across this photo of what I believe to be four
generations of mother/daughters. I
believe the photo was taken in late ‘48 to
early ‘49 and can verify that it is of my
sister, mother, and grandmother (Katrina
Felker-Bright). I also believe
it is of my great-grandmother Dorcas Dow-Felker
(she would also be Kathy Douglas’
great-grandmother), who was born in 1872 and
died in April 1950. If it is she, she
looks to be roughly the 76/77 she would have
been at the time of the picture.

"An
illustration of sorts--and an engaging
digression--brings to the fore a recent
hypothesis promulgated by N Brent Kennedy
that Melungeons are descended from Ottoman
Turks. Evelyn McKinley Orr, a member of the
previously mentioned Melungeon Research
Committee, wrote a few years back that her
Melungeon ancestor, David Goings (whom she
discovered in the fall of 1989) must have
had Turkish ancestry because Norman Goings
of Selma, Indiana, wrote that in 1939 that "Tuckahoe"
was the term used by the family to describe
itself. Somebody suggeted to Orr that "Tuckahoe" was a
"nicname for people from Turkey." Orr stated
that David Goings married in Montgomery
County, Virginia, and that his wife's family
were members of the New River German
settlement."
"Tuckahoe" is not at all a misreading or mispronunciation of Turkish. Tuckaho unequivocally alludes to the Virginia origins of Goings. In "Tennessee Civil War Veterans questionnaires", George Washington Lewis of Lebanon, Tennessee, stated that his father Carroll Lewis was from James River in Virginia and that his grandfather Samuel Lewis was a colonel in the Continental Army during the Revolution. He commanded a "regiment of Tuckaho Indians." "Tuckaho" was once a widespread sobriquet for Virginians, especially those from east of the Blue Ridge. The term is derived from the Powhatan language and originally applied to several different roots, tubers, and fungi, some used by Indians for food, especially in the form of bread. Tuckaho was possibly consumed by poor Virginians of every color, for the word came to refer to Virginians generally. The Tuckaho Indian regiment mentioned by George Lewis was composed of foot soldiers from the piedmont counties of Albermarle, Fluvanna, Louisia, and so forth, and was but one of several Virginia regiments of Indian soldiers. Several reputed Tennessee Melungeons had been Revolutionary soldiers in piedmont Virginia before moving down to Newman Ridge. In fact, several mustered and served in the general region of the said Tuckaho Indian regiment. In the Tennessee Civil War Veterans questionnaires, George Lewis stated that the farm he grew up on near Lebanon, Tennessee, was worked before the Civil War by hired free Indian labor..." "The latest exotic-origins movment, favoring connections with Portuguese, Ottoman Turks, or possibly other Mediterraneans, has generated a peculiar following on the Internet--another virtual community. For such folks, Melungeons are a hot topic, as illustrated by five recently published books and the developement of the ad-hoc "Melungeon Research Committee" noted earlier in this essay. However, I suggest that the current movement is but the latest in a series of mid to late 20th century reinventions of the Melungeons. Unfortunately, while hypothetical "Off-shore Others" flood Appalachia and the word-wide web, real Melungeon histories and historic identities are being cast aside." CS Everett Appalachian Journal. I am suggesting that the controversy over the Melungeon ethnicity is motivation of some of these vigorous attempts to deny the well documented black and white African ancestry of the Mihil-Thomas Gowen line. The more adamant of those who have denied African, have actually traveled to Turkey with Mr. Kennedy and strongly support his opinions. While I have high regard for Brent's character, I strongly disagree with him on the Turkish origin of Melungeons. He and I continue to communicate frequently and have none of the rancor that is directed to me by some of his followers on this sub. Some of these so called exotic origins of Melungeons are coming under extreme academic fire, many of those theories will not survive scrutiny or time. We would be wise to keep that controversy separated from sound Gowen research to avoid being labeled as re-inventors of history. I rarely find anyone with the GRF objecting to Mihil and Thomas' Negro kinship who did not first have a strong opinion about the origin of the Melungeons. On the contrary, my article on the origin of the Melungeons was inspired from convincing documented archives of the GRF. This is how it should be. You should state your opinions without going into attack mode by talking about "speculation" etc. Let others make their decisions on the documentation. Genealogy, precisely documented, should drive the theory, not the other way around. Tim Hashaw Houston, Texas |
From a
search of each of the 1900, 1910, 1920,
and 1930 U.S. Census data for "Rodney Gwin" Based on these
searches, it appears to me that this Rodney
R. Gwin is a son of a Harry and Iva Gwin and
that he moved away from home for some reason
by the time he was fifteen. He was born in
Indiana, which is where my Gwins were;
however, he was living in central
Indiana--Madison Co., not the southern
part--in 1900, north of where my family
lived but very near where the "other"
Indiana Gwins lived. This is not
conclusive, of course, for he could have
been born in the southern part of the state
and only lived in Madison Co. because he was
boarding there. At this point, then, we are
pretty much forced to abandon this pursuit
via census reports, since there is no 1890
census available (it was burned), and try
some other route such as birth certificates,
etc.

[John M. Gwin Note: The outline list of Jan's and Larry's descendants, below, is taken from Jan's
OBITUARY,
copied here from her good FindAGrave.com memorial.]
Joyce Jan "Jan" Williams was born in Red Cloud, Nebraska, February 12, 1933. She was the only daughter of Mayree (Hudson) and Howard B. Kaley. Jan departed this life on April 30, 2013 at Midwest City, Oklahoma.
Jan received her formal education attending the Red Cloud, Nebraska Public Schools and Stephens College in Missouri.
Howard Kaley and Jan were noted horse exhibitors, attending parades and horse shows, and Jan was considered one of the state's most accomplished professional jumpers, having jumped at the Kansas City Royals and the San Francisco Cow Palace. She held numerous winning ribbons from surrounding states. Jan was also invited to try out for the Olympics. Her folks, however, believed that Italy was too far from home.
Jan was always seeking new adventures in testing limitations. Her motto was "I'll try everything once." She held the family parachute bailout record of 14, 520 feet, which will probably stand for some time and not be challenged.
Jan was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother lovingly referred to as "Grammy." She and her husband, Larry, were married at Red Cloud, Nebraska in 1952 and served together in the United States Air Force for 30 years, traveling to many parts of the world. During this time Jan, besides mothering five children, was also an office manager for an audit agency. The past thirty years found Jan and Larry operating a fine jewelry business and traveling in many states. Their many friends considered them the mom and pop of their trade. Their home has been in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma since 1974.
Preceding her in death were her parents and two children, an infant daughter, Laurie, and Timothy, who was twelve.
Surviving are her beloved husband of 60 years, Larry D. Williams from Canova, South Dakota; children, Jeffrey Kaley Williams and wife Leean of Texas, Kristie Ann McGuire and husband Kevin of Colorado, and Jerry Jay Williams of Colorado; granddaughters Kaley Lynn Young of Texas, Lindsey Marie Brown and husband Spencer of Colorado, Stephane Ann Young of Georgia, Kelsey Ann Chilcoat and husband Jace of Oklahoma, and Juliana MacKay Kaley Williams of Texas and a host of family and friends.
Greatly missed by all her family and friends over the United States, she will always be in our hearts. Inurnment of cremains was in the Red Cloud Cemetery, Red Cloud, Nebraska.

believe this to be our Dorcas, since there is no other
Dorcas Dow to be found of this age in the United States in
1880. However, the enumerator failed to list her
relationship to the head of the house, so we're not real
sure whether she's a daughter or a granddaughter (perhaps
a child of Rosa, for instance). She does name her
firstborn son Alvin D. Felker, making it very plausible
that he is named for this Alvin Dow; nevertheless, it is
NOT clear whether this Alvin Dow is Dorcas' son's father or grandfather; either
is possible. If the former, then Alvin Dow is in
generation 24, but if the latter, then he is in generation
25.00, and Rosa and some unknown person are Dorcas'
parents. Perhaps we will solve this mystery from
another source. |

William's BIO from his FindAGrave.com Memorial--VETERAN OF WWI, CALIFORNIA, PVT 4 CAVWilliam Henry Dodds, Jr., 70, was the son of William H. and Sarah Ann (Briner) Dodds. He had been a resident of Hanford for 43 years, operating a ranch southeast of the city until his retirement. He died in Long Beach, California.
He was survived by three daughters, Mrs. Sadie May Sagaser of Laton; Mrs. Georgie Louise Brown of Long Beach; and Mrs. Ethel Henrietta Bliss of Mentone.
Sadie's BIO from her FindAGrave.com MemorialSadie May Sagaser was born in California on June 17, 1902 and left this world on May 13, 1996 to live with loved ones and friends in paradise. Sadie's maiden name was Dodds and her mother's maiden name was Reynolds. Sadie lived in Fresno when she died.
I invite family members and friends to add to this memorial.
27.02--Joseph Nelson Sagaser, b. 27 May 1931 in Tulare, CA; d. 9 Dec 2015 in Fresno, CA; bd. Tipton-Pixley Cem., Tipton, Tulare Co., CA--FAG#156133537; m. Dorothy A. Gunderson (b. unk.; d. unk.; bd. unk.); at least three ch.;
OBITUARYJoseph Nelson Sagaser passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, 9 December 2015 in Fresno, California. Joe was born on 27 May 1931 in Tulare, California to Alvin Nelson Sagaser and Sadie Mae Dodds.
On 25 June 1955, Joe married the love of his life, Dorothy A. Gunderson in Van Nuys, California and after 61 years of marriage, she nursed him through his final days. Rare is the devotion they shared.
Joe is also survived by his children, son Joseph C. Sagaser, his wife Colleen and their three sons Mathew, Daniel, Jacob and his wife Kim. Jacob and Kim blessed Joe with a great-granddaughter; Hailey. He is also survived by his daughters Lisa Sagaser, Kim and her husband John Tanksley and their children John and Katherine.
Joe continued a legacy of pioneers that were some of the first immigrants to North America and in the first waves of settlers to the American West-- hard working farmers, ranchers, military, merchants, and inventors. He was raised during the Great Depression in the Central Valley of California and with his parents and five siblings cleared virgin land and established a family farm along the banks of the Kings River in Laton. Life was not easy, but as a family they persevered. Joe went on to graduate with honors from the University of California Davis with a degree in Entomology and led a distinguished career as a researcher; developing and testing pest control techniques for agricultural crops in California. His work ethic, ingenuity and character garnered him much respect in the agricultural community that continued long after his retirement.
Joe had an unwavering love of God and family and instilled in them all the importance of hard work, education, character, and integrity. Writer Clarence Kelland described Joe perfectly when he wrote, “My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.” Joseph Sagaser came from a long line of strong, pioneering people of character and created an exemplary legacy of his own. The example he set with his life will continue on in the following generations. He will be missed.
A grave-side memorial to honor his memory will be held at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Tipton Cemetery, located off of highway 99 at 10395 Avenue 144 in Tipton, California.

searched in 1850 Ohio for a William Henry Dodds b. ca.1836
in OH with a brother two years younger named Joseph. This
William's family seems to fit that criteria.
There's no proof of that yet, of course, but there is
enough data to make the possibility feasible and warrant
recording it here. We'll go next to the 1860 census and
see if we can find the family there. |

son
Henry two lines below is our Wm. H. Dodds, then we now
know his father, also William H. Dodds (Sr.). His

I
have no doubt this is our William H. Dodds, future
husband of Leticia Reynolds. Having found him in 1910 as
a native Californian, we can see here that his age is
right, his parents' places of birth are right, his
father's name is the same (so they are Sr. and Jr.), and
we learn that his own name, Henry, gives it away as
being a namesake for President Harrison. |

MO/KY/KY | I
wonder if she married a cousin to be still using the

her husband died. Maybe we can find out if we can find
her again in 1900. Oh, I notice in this same census that
she is deaf and dumb. Hmm. I wonder if someone took
advantage of her disability. Or maybe it was a shotgun
wedding, and he tried to get out of it, getting the
wrong end of the shotgun in the process, and she really
did end up being a widow. Speculation aboundeth. |

My
guess
is that this is a son of Alfred who had already married
and moved out of the house by 1850 and therefore doesn't
appear there. The fact that they are living next-door to
his parents, Alfred and and Ruth, is another huge clue.
That he, like Hampton, is b. in KY settles it for me. |

that she is deaf and dumb. Hmm. I wonder if someone
took advantage of her disability. Or maybe it was a
shotgun wedding, and he tried to get out of it,
getting the wrong end of the shotgun in the process,
and she really did end up being a widow. Speculation
aboundeth. |

This
is Mary A. James Reynolds' son as well, of course,
so the three granddaughters, above, are likely James' and
Annie's daughters (they've been married 12 years, and the
oldest is 11--that's a pretty good clue. Mike Brown read this and
added the following: "Incidently, the James A.
Reynolds that was already 33 yrs. old in the 1900 census,
I met as a little boy, when he was in his 90's. We
called him Uncle Alfred (his middle name). And you
are correct that the three girls are his and Annie's
daughter's. Addie was his care giver when I met
him. Littisha is not there with her family in 1900
because she was up north getting married to William H.
Dodds, Jr. I believe I have their marriage
date and place at home which I will forward to you." |
