Ancestors of Gordon Alan Douglas and Kathleen "Kathy" Louise Brown . . |
When our son Jeremy
married Kara Douglas on 9 June 2006, we knew
this page would soon be forthcoming.
Charity had married Beau, and the Pihlaja page became
part of the tree. Sarah had married Jason, and
off we went with the branch for the Johnsons.
So when Sharon and I went to Albuquerque
for a visit with Jeremy and Kara in
March 2007, who was I to put off the
inevitable? Readers, we are delighted to
present to you our growing Gwin/Douglas connection!

Jeremy is a civil engineer, P.E., who worked with Parsons Brinckerhoff in Albuquerque while Kara went to the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. As an M. D., she is now finishing her years of residency in gynocology at University of Texas Medical Center on El Paso's west side, formerly Thomason Hospital. With the move to El Paso, Jeremy stepped down from PB and is teaching math, computer skills, and filmmaking at Mesilla Valley Christian Schools' secondary campus in Las Cruces. --John M. Gwin --

[John

NOTE:
The
following 4.0--John/Emily Douglass family may or
may not be that of our 5.0--Branch L. Douglas;
however, when I searched the 1870 Virginia census
for any Virginian of the right age with the given
name of Branch, this 5.08--Branch L. Douglass was
one of a mere handful to appear. And the fact that
he has the correct last name (though spelled with
two esses)] convinces me that he is indeed our
target.] [John M. Gwin NOTE: On
another note...
From: "Norman E. West" <nlwestattexhomadotnet> Date: August 25, 2007 To: <jmcdgwin@zianet.com> Subject: Southard connection This has nothing to do with your line, but... My great-great-grandfather was Elias Southard whom you have on your Douglas page in the census of 1870. His son Benjamin (who was between Emily J. and William F. who married Lucy A.) was my grandfather. It is interesting to me to find out her maiden name, possibly, and I agree with your findings, probably! Benjamin married and had a family in Virginia; however, his oldest son moved to Oklahoma when it was Indian Country, and Benjamin followed and died in Oklahoma and is buried at Ft Sill, Oklahoma. His wife refused to come to Oklahoma and is buried at Standardsville, VA. My husband and I raise wheat and cattle on my grandfather's land he got in 1903. This is all side-family-info, but your page was interesting to me, and I had to share. Louise Southard West]

I believe this is our Shem, husband
of Catherine and father of Amos. His age fits
and his location fits; further, how many Shem
Heatwoles can there be who match up like that?
SO, IF this is he--and I'm convinced it is--we
just opened up another generation! By the way,
Ancestry.com
mistranscribed his first name as "Shew". |

We learn here that his first name is
Shem. The names and ages of his family confirm
that this is Kara's ggg-grandfather. Finding
him here led us to him again in 1850 where we
learn that his father's name is Shem as well;
therefore, we'll call this one Shem Junior
and his father Shem Senior. |

This is the father of Amos F., from
whom our line descends. As you can see from
"carpinter", this enumerator doesn't spell well,
so we can take the spellings of the various
names with a grain of salt as well. |

No wonder we couldn't find him! What I finally
did was look at all the Amoses (I left the last
name box empty) in the entire census of Central
District in Rockingham Co., VA, and there he
was. OK, that doesn't, however, explain why I
haven't been able to find any of his siblings or
parents, so I'll keep looking. |

Gabrel Heatwole | My transcription is incomplete--there
are 3 more people in this household, whom I
believe to be Gabriel's daughter and her family.
Being two doors down from Cathern, I feel quite
strongly that they are related; perhaps Gabriel
and Cathern's deceased husband were brothers. |

Note: Kathy Douglas emailed
me regarding the spelling of
"Jaanila"; she wrote: I think that 'Jaanila' must have come from illegible handwriting. If the person was writing "Juanita" and the "u" looked more like an "a", and the "t" wasn't crossed, then it would look like "Jaanila." Until then, neither of us had looked at the original record, only at Ancestry.com's mistranscription of it (above, right). At left is this original. Of course it is Juanita, and she already knew that Gordon's aunt is Juanita, not Jaanila, but I think we have a sleuth here, folks! This is the type of thinking one has to do all the time in this hobby. Do you think Kathy has been bitten by the genealogy bug? (:-) To quote LeRoy Jethro Gibbs, [pause] "That's good work." |

This photo
(right) is of part of one of the pages of the 14
Jun 1860 U.S. Census of
Old Salem, Dist. No. 3, Washington Co.,
TN, showing the residents of residence #266.
Listed is this 22.05--Delilah Hartzell Early, 65 and b. in TN, widow of Mr. Early and mother of the head of this household, Martin L. Early, age 34 (a farmer with $3000 in real and $8000 in personal property), who is also listed with his wife Charlotte (30, nee unk.) and children: Samuel, 8; Delilah, 6; Sarah, 3; and Benj. F., 2. That leaves the Augusta Johnson, 24 (whom I believe to be one and the same as the 23.08--Delilah A. Early, b. 1836, daughter of 2.5--Delilah and youngest sister of Martin); her daughter Elizabeth Johnson, 1; and her husband, George W. Johnson, 22, b. NC, none of whom can read or write. |

Please note that I have listed census records here in two different formats. First are
summary transcriptions of copies of the
original census records transcribed by Ancestry.com,
some of which may have been mistranscribed.
Because I was in a hurry at the time, I simply
cut and pasted them from Ancestry.com into
the places above where they best fit to at
least get some
of the data (names and ages) onto this page.
Second are
my own transcriptions, below, of copies of the
original census pages. These include more data
than simply the names and ages of the parties
as in the summary trancriptions. These are
listed in charts with this pale yellow
background. While they take longer to add, I
believe they may be more valuable because of
the additional information.

mistranscribed his first name as "Abbas", so if
you're trying to find the page from which this was
transcribed, type that in instead. This is the
Abraham Hartsell who appears above as
#3.04--Abraham Hartsell, Jr. I am searching every page of the census of this district to see if other Hartsells appear. |

but his name does not yet appear in the outline

may be a brother; however, while a brother six
years younger does appear in the outline, his name
is Paul Anthony Hartsell. Let's continue our
search of the enumeration. |

I'm so glad I made this search! Here is
a Thomas Early. I recognized the last name

indicates he was born before the turn of the

and sure enough, his wife is named Delilah! |

This is Susan (nee Butler) Templin,
Kara's gg-grandmother. She reports here that she
has survived two of her ten children. Seeing the
large gap between Bertie and Edith, I speculate
that the two victims (of whatever did them in)
were born in approximately 1905 and 1907. |

Her name here is clearly spelled
Keriah. Mr. Butler is not listed here, but
the age of her youngest daughter pretty much
tells us that he died after she was concieved

I have listed census records here in two different formats. First
are summary transcriptions of copies of the
original census records transcribed by Ancestry.com,
some of which may have been mistranscribed.
Because I was in a hurry at the time, I
simply cut and pasted them from Ancestry.com immediately
below
to
at
least
get
some
of the data (names and ages) onto this page.
Second
are my own transcriptions of copies of the
original census pages. These include more
data than simply the names and ages of the
parties as in the summary trancriptions.
These are listed below the summaries in
charts with this pale yellow background.
While they take longer to add, I believe
they may be more valuable because of the
additional information.

Ella's age is likely a clue to their
wedding date. Three months plus nine more
would put their marriage about July 1869. And
if Rosa was b. in NY, that would probably mean
that their move to IL would've been within the
year, don't you think? |

It appears that she is actually the daughter of
the household head, Riley, and wife of Riley's
son-in-law, Harvey. Rosa is Riley's daughter, so
if my earlier specualtion is correct (that Riley
and Alida are siblings) then Rosa and Harvey are
first cousins, perhaps putting Ella and Riley B.
at risk for genetic deficiencies/defects. I hope
their descendants turned out well. |

It appears that she is actually the
daughter of Harvey and Rosa, thus the granddaughter
of the household head. This is
H&R's firstborn (we believe); however, with
no more children showing for ten years, we may
assume that several have died very young,
leading us to believe that others may even have
preceded Ella in birth; therefore, their
marriage could have been even earlier than July
1869. |

I decided to include this family
because the last name, GREEN, is the same as
Lucretia's, residence #170 above, and he's also
from NY. He could be a
grandson of Lucretia and thereby a first cousin
to Harvey. On the other hand, there are MANY in
this census who were born in NY; in fact, it
looks like an entire trainload of Illinois
settlers may have made a mass exodus from NY
together! Who knows--maybe they're ALL
related... A quick scan search of this census has turned up another GREEN family--Jefferson, 50 (NY/NY/NY); wife Mary, 41 (IL/MA/MA); daughters Hettie A., 17, and Sarah M., 15; granddaughter Mollie Ovesen (Overen?), 1; an elderly Nelson couple (who are likely Mary's parents--MA/MA/MA). And living next door is an Overen/Oveson family--and on and on it seems to go! Are they all Brown relations? Another thought: the father of Sidney Brown's wife, Elizabeth Truelove Brown, is William Green Truelove. |

[Mike Brown Note: Elizabeth's maiden name is Truelove, sometimes spelled Trulove. I believe they may have met in AZ as there is a Sidney Brown operating a saloon with his oldest brother John in the 1880 census, although Sidney's age doesn't match. Elizabeth may have been there visiting family, an aunt named Louise Davis, that she grew up with in CA after her parents died. Elizabeth's father, William, was a prospector who died in 1869. I don't know what year Sarah died. I can't locate her in the 1870 census, which by then her children are living in CA with their grandfather, Joel Davis, Sarah's father. Concerning Sidney S. Brown, I have not been able to locate him in the 1870 census. It would be interesting to see if the 22 year old was still in NY or had started his way west by that time. My info on Sidney in the 1880 census is speculative and unconfirmed, but it is the best lead I have at this time. I am also stumped on the next generation beyond his parents, Royal H. Brown & Alida Potter. Royal named his first born John, Sidney's oldest brother. I found the names John Brown and Polly Spaulding in NY, who had a son named Royal H. and who was born in the correct year, but I have been unable to find enough information to confirm it's our Royal.] Here's a Green

At
first I thought this might be the Leonard from
the 1910 census, because the bottom of the page
was in shadow and mostly illegible (as shown by
the blanks at left). I'm fairly sure it says
that Samuel's parents' POB was England. This
gave me hope that Melissa's POB might be
England. Then I barely made out that Melissa had
6 living children, so I turned the page and saw
that there were indeed three more kids. With
disappointment, I read for all of the girls that
their mom was born in Minnesota, not England. So
that means that this is not our
Leonard. |

only entry I've found that: 1. has him b. 1903 in OH, 2. has his father b. OH, and 3. has his mother b. England. Further, the location is on the way to California... And, if it is he, then we have his parents' names, ages, PsOB, even a brother, etc. |

Dorcas' name, his initials, and the
place of residence pretty much nail this down as
the right family. Granted,
they're not proof, but I'm convinced.
Therefore, I'll move forward, looking for John

"An
illustration of sorts--and an engaging
digression--brings to the fore a recent
hypothesis promulgated by N Brent Kennedy
that Melungeons are descended from Ottoman
Turks. Evelyn McKinley Orr, a member of the
previously mentioned Melungeon Research
Committee, wrote a few years back that her
Melungeon ancestor, David Goings (whom she
discovered in the fall of 1989) must have
had Turkish ancestry because Norman Goings
of Selma, Indiana, wrote that in 1939 that "Tuckahoe"
was the term used by the family to describe
itself. Somebody suggeted to Orr that "Tuckahoe" was a
"nicname for people from Turkey." Orr stated
that David Goings married in Montgomery
County, Virginia, and that his wife's family
were members of the New River German
settlement."
"Tuckahoe" is not at all a misreading or mispronunciation of Turkish. Tuckaho unequivocally alludes to the Virginia origins of Goings. In "Tennessee Civil War Veterans questionnaires", George Washington Lewis of Lebanon, Tennessee, stated that his father Carroll Lewis was from James River in Virginia and that his grandfather Samuel Lewis was a colonel in the Continental Army during the Revolution. He commanded a "regiment of Tuckaho Indians." "Tuckaho" was once a widespread sobriquet for Virginians, especially those from east of the Blue Ridge. The term is derived from the Powhatan language and originally applied to several different roots, tubers, and fungi, some used by Indians for food, especially in the form of bread. Tuckaho was possibly consumed by poor Virginians of every color, for the word came to refer to Virginians generally. The Tuckaho Indian regiment mentioned by George Lewis was composed of foot soldiers from the piedmont counties of Albermarle, Fluvanna, Louisia, and so forth, and was but one of several Virginia regiments of Indian soldiers. Several reputed Tennessee Melungeons had been Revolutionary soldiers in piedmont Virginia before moving down to Newman Ridge. In fact, several mustered and served in the general region of the said Tuckaho Indian regiment. In the Tennessee Civil War Veterans questionnaires, George Lewis stated that the farm he grew up on near Lebanon, Tennessee, was worked before the Civil War by hired free Indian labor..." "The latest exotic-origins movment, favoring connections with Portuguese, Ottoman Turks, or possibly other Mediterraneans, has generated a peculiar following on the Internet--another virtual community. For such folks, Melungeons are a hot topic, as illustrated by five recently published books and the developement of the ad-hoc "Melungeon Research Committee" noted earlier in this essay. However, I suggest that the current movement is but the latest in a series of mid to late 20th century reinventions of the Melungeons. Unfortunately, while hypothetical "Off-shore Others" flood Appalachia and the word-wide web, real Melungeon histories and historic identities are being cast aside." CS Everett Appalachian Journal. I am suggesting that the controversy over the Melungeon ethnicity is motivation of some of these vigorous attempts to deny the well documented black and white African ancestry of the Mihil-Thomas Gowen line. The more adamant of those who have denied African, have actually traveled to Turkey with Mr. Kennedy and strongly support his opinions. While I have high regard for Brent's character, I strongly disagree with him on the Turkish origin of Melungeons. He and I continue to communicate frequently and have none of the rancor that is directed to me by some of his followers on this sub. Some of these so called exotic origins of Melungeons are coming under extreme academic fire, many of those theories will not survive scrutiny or time. We would be wise to keep that controversy separated from sound Gowen research to avoid being labeled as re-inventors of history. I rarely find anyone with the GRF objecting to Mihil and Thomas' Negro kinship who did not first have a strong opinion about the origin of the Melungeons. On the contrary, my article on the origin of the Melungeons was inspired from convincing documented archives of the GRF. This is how it should be. You should state your opinions without going into attack mode by talking about "speculation" etc. Let others make their decisions on the documentation. Genealogy, precisely documented, should drive the theory, not the other way around. Tim Hashaw Houston, Texas |
From a
search of each of the 1900, 1910, 1920,
and 1930 U.S. Census data for "Rodney Gwin" Based on these
searches, it appears to me that this Rodney
R. Gwin is a son of a Harry and Iva Gwin and
that he moved away from home for some reason
by the time he was fifteen. He was born in
Indiana, which is where my Gwins were;
however, he was living in central
Indiana--Madison Co., not the southern
part--in 1900, north of where my family
lived but very near where the "other"
Indiana Gwins lived. This is not
conclusive, of course, for he could have
been born in the southern part of the state
and only lived in Madison Co. because he was
boarding there. At this point, then, we are
pretty much forced to abandon this pursuit
via census reports, since there is no 1890
census available (it was burned), and try
some other route such as birth certificates,
etc.

believe this to be our Dorcas, since there is no other
Dorcas Dow to be found of this age in the United States in
1880. However, the enumerator failed to list her
relationship to the head of the house, so we're not real
sure whether she's a daughter or a granddaughter (perhaps
a child of Rosa, for instance). She does name her
firstborn son Alvin D. Felker, making it very plausible
that he is named for this Alvin Dow; nevertheless, it is
NOT clear whether this Alvin Dow is Dorcas' son's father or grandfather; either
is possible. If the former, then Alvin Dow is in
generation 24, but if the latter, then he is in generation
25.00, and Rosa and some unknown person are Dorcas'
parents. Perhaps we will solve this mystery from
another source. |

William's family seems to fit that criteria.
There's no proof of that yet, of course, but there is

recording it here. We'll go next to the 1860 census and
see if we can find the family there. |

right, his parents' places of birth are right, his

we learn that his own name, Henry, gives it away as
being a namesake for President Harrison. |

Are we kin to THE Jesse
James?
What does the evidence say so far? [Mike
Brown
Note:
The
James name enters on my grandmother Georgie Dodd's line. As I
mentioned previously, her mother is Littisha, or
Letisha, Reynolds (m. Dodds), who married Lee B.
Brown in 1922. Littisha's parents are
William Reynolds
and Mary A. James,
married Feb 12, 1864, in Macon Co., MO., and who
came to CA, I believe, in the 1890's. Mary
James' death certificate lists her birth as Nov.
22, 1845, and her death date is June 22,
1918. Her father is listed as A. James and
mother as Ruth Smith. In The 1850 census of
District 22, Macon Co., MO., I found an Alfred
James, age 45, and wife Ruth, age 45, and one of
their children is Mary A., age 10 (putting her
birth year in 1840, not 1845 as indicated on the
death cert.). A brother named Hampton is on the same
census, and I found a Hampton James living in CA
with Mary A. and husband William Reynolds in the
1900 census, so I'm fairly certain I have the
correct family. Beyond this, I'm not sure
how to proceed to connect our family with the
infamous outlaw. Kathy and I have
viewed the Jesse James
family tree, and none of us has found a connection. But
it's compelling because Jesse (b.1847) and Mary A.
are born in the same generation and in the same
state, although different counties. Perhaps
distant cousins?]
[John M. Gwin Note: Mike, Kathy,
and all,
I'm also looking at the two, and I can't see a connection yet, either. However, let's continue to add to the two lines side by side as you see immediately below, because (1) we have no
knowledge yet of siblings
or parents of Georgie's
ancestor 3.0--Albert James
(husband of Ruth A. Smith),
and
(2) we have no assurance that our list of the children of Jesse's ancestors 3.0--William and Mary Hines James is complete; (3) we're not even sure that what we have as Jesse's line is accurate (see, for instance, the Editor's Note at the bottom of that column). For example, Georgie's ancestor 3.0--Albert COULD be (a) a nephew
of Jesse's ancestor 1.0--William James
(h/o Mary Hines),
(b) a grandson of this same 1.0--Wm. and Mary through an unlisted son older than 2.1--John M. James, or (c) another relation of which we've not yet thought. Don't give up yet! :-)] |

My
guess
is that this is a son of Alfred who had already married
and moved out of the house by 1850 and therefore doesn't
appear there. The fact that they are living next-door to
his parents, Alfred and and Ruth, is another huge clue.
That he, like Hampton, is b. in KY settles it for me. |

look

aligned with her birth certificate date, however, let's
say that the 1850 enumerator was bonkers and go with the

This
is
our
Hampton

Emily, still in Macon Co. I wonder why we
couldn't find any of these in 1870. Probably I'll have
to do a search of the whole county; then maybe we'll
find that Ancestry.com
mistranscribed the last name... |

wonder if she married a cousin to be still using the
name James, or if she took her maiden name back after
her husband died. Maybe we can find out if we can find
her again in 1900. Oh, I notice in this same census
that she is deaf and dumb. Hmm. I wonder if someone
took advantage of her disability. Or maybe it was a
shotgun wedding, and he tried to get out of it,
getting the wrong end of the shotgun in the process,
and she really did end up being a widow. Speculation
aboundeth. |

This
is
Mary
A.
James
Reynolds'
son
as well, of course, so the three granddaughters, above,
are likely James' and Annie's daughters (they've been
marred 12 years, and the oldest is 11--that's a pretty
good clue. Mike Brown
read this and added the following: "Incidently,
the James A. Reynolds that was already 33 yrs. old in the
1900 census, I met as a little boy, when he was in his
90's. We called him Uncle Alfred (his middle
name). And you are correct that the three girls are
his and Annie's daughter's. Addie was his care giver
when I met him. Littisha is not there with her
family in 1900 because she was up north getting married to
William H. Dodds, Jr. I believe I have their
marriage date and place at home which I will forward to
you." |
