This has nothing to do with your line, but... My great-great-grandfather was Elias Southard whom you have on your Douglas page in the census of 1870. His son Benjamin (who was between Emily J. and William F. who married Lucy A.) was my grandfather. It is interesting to me to find out her maiden name, possibly, and I agree with your findings, probably! Benjamin married and had a family in Virginia; however, his oldest son moved to Oklahoma when it was Indian Country, and Benjamin followed and died in Oklahoma and is buried at Ft Sill, Oklahoma. His wife refused to come to Oklahoma and is buried at Standardsville, VA. My husband and I raise wheat and cattle on my grandfather's land he got in 1903. This is all side-family-info, but your page was interesting to me, and I had to share. Louise Southard West]

What I finally did was look at all the Amoses (I left the last name box empty) in the entire census of Central District in Rockingham Co., VA, and there he was. OK, that doesn't, however, explain why I haven't been able to find any of his siblings or parents, so I'll keep looking.

Research: Order of Battle

01. We started this Hartsell line with Gordon's mom, 27.02--Dorothy Jean Hartsell.
02. Her father was 26.02--Dale Milburn Hartsell, both of whom show up in the 1930 census in Fresno, CA.
03. Dale was also located in the 1920, 1910, and 1900 censuses of Cocke Co., TN.
04. When Dale appeared in the 1900 census, he was living with his parents, 25.02--William Brownlow Hartsell (age 36) and his wife Josephine.
05. The jump to 1880 presented a problem, as Will and Jo were not yet married, so we had to depend on age and location.
06. Nevertheless, there was only one William Hartsell living in Cocke Co., TN, who was age 16 in 1880: the son of 24.0--John Harrison Hartsell.
07. For 1900, a John Hartsell was the right age, living in the right place, with the right wife, and with two of the right children (only one of whose ages is right, however).
08. We uncovered John again in 1870, and again all the names of people and places aligned themselves with those in the other censuses.
09. This led us to John again--this time in 1850--with all his siblings to date and his parents: 23.0--Abraham Hartsell and wife Rebeca.

10. Then on 29 Apr 2007, Kathy Douglas loaned me the Hartsell book--The Hartsell Connection by Larry D. and Magdalene E. Fox (who attribute much of this work to the research of Mrs. Edith Richardson of Gainesville, GA, a Hartsell descendant)--that belongs to her Aunt Lorraine Smith (who had mailed it to Kathy and Gordon). Information I've gleaned exclusively from this work appears below in this purple color. It is far too extensive for me to copy in its entirety here, however. Aunt Lorraine, I promise to be very careful with it--thanks for sending it! I've already read through quite a bit of it and have seen that it corresponds almost perfectly with what I have already found out as listed above. I plan to make a copy of it and give it back to Kathy as quickly as possible.

[Mike Brown Note: Elizabeth's maiden name is Truelove, sometimes spelled Trulove. I believe they may have met in AZ as there is a Sidney Brown operating a saloon with his oldest brother John in the 1880 census, although Sidney's age doesn't match. Elizabeth may have been there visiting family, an aunt named Louise Davis, that she grew up with in CA after her parents died. Elizabeth's father, William, was a prospector who died in 1869. I don't know what year Sarah died. I can't locate her in the 1870 census, which by then her children are living in CA with their grandfather, Joel Davis, Sarah's father.

Concerning Sidney S. Brown, I have not been able to locate him in the 1870 census. It would be interesting to see if the 22 year old was still in NY or had started his way west by that time. My info on Sidney in the 1880 census is speculative and unconfirmed, but it is the best lead I have at this time. I am also stumped on the next generation beyond his parents, Royal H. Brown & Alida Potter. Royal named his first born John, Sidney's oldest brother. I found the names John Brown and Polly Spaulding in NY, who had a son named Royal H. and who was born in the correct year, but I have been unable to find enough information to confirm it's our Royal.]

Hi John,
My name is Mike Brown in California. George & Joanne Brown are my uncle and aunt. I enjoyed very much looking at your research on the family names, and I wanted to add whatever I could.
Unfortunately none of it is computerized. You may have some of this information already, so please forgive any duplication.
I can confirm your information on Sidney Brown's parents, Royal H. Brown and Alida Potter.
Royal died between 1860-70 because Alida is widowed and living with her son Harvey in Illinois in 1870. I do have additional information on the Potter line.
Sidney Brown died July 4, 1919, in Hanford, CA. His wife Elizabeth's maiden name is Truelove, sometimes spelled Trulove. She died June 28, 1928, in Laton, CA. They were married in Cochise Co., AZ on April 5, 1880. I believe they may have met in AZ as there is a Sidney Brown operating a saloon with his oldest brother John in the 1880 census, although Sidney's age doesn't match. Elizabeth may have been there visiting family, an aunt named Louise Davis, that she grew up with in CA after her parents died. Elizabeth's parents were William Green Truelove and Sarah Davis, married in Shaw's Flat, Tolulome Co., CA in 1855. William was a prospector who died in 1869. I don't know what year Sarah died. I can't locate her in the 1870 census, which by then her children are living in CA with their grandfather, Joel Davis, Sarah's father.
Royal E. Brown died in 1956. I have no information about his marriage, if he ever was.
Nettie Brown married Ralph Delano Dec. 24, 1903. She died May 14, 1956, in Lewis Co., WA
Lee B. Brown married Litisha Dodds in 1922. Litisha was the mother of Georgie Dodds, Lester Brown's wife. No children. Lee died in 1959. (I did not have the 1930 census info on Lee--thank you!).
Rosa Brown married Madison Stogdill in 1911. She died March 7, 1959, in LA Co., CA.
Bertha Brown married Henry Luft in 1914. 3 children. She died in 1920 at age 29.
Lester Brown (my grandfather) married Georgie Dodds on Feb. 6, 1924, in Compton, CA.

Good to meet you as well. I looked at the updated pages and let me first say how much easier on the eyes it is to read your typed and organized research than my handwritten scribbles and notes! What a gift to the Brown family--thanks again for taking the time to do this. I know I have a few additional names and dates which I will pass on to you when I locate them.

My research on the family over the years has been very satisfying to me, although at times I've hit a lot of dead ends! Kathy undoubtedly mentioned the Jesse James connection to you, something we have been told since we were kids, but I have not been able to fully connect the dots (if you are able to, John, you will most definitely be the new Brown family hero!). Here is what I know about it:
The James name enters on my grandmother Georgie Dodd's line. As I mentioned previously, her mother is Littisha, or Letisha, Reynolds (m. Dodds), who married Lee B. Brown in 1922. Littisha's parents are William Reynolds and Mary A. James, married Feb 12, 1864, in Macon Co., MO., and who came to CA I believe in the 1890's. Mary James' death certificate lists her birth as Nov. 22, 1845, and her death date is June 22, 1918. Her father is listed as A. James and mother as Ruth Smith. In The 1850 census of District 22, Macon Co., MO., I found an Alfred James, age 45, and wife Ruth, age 45, and one of their children is Mary A., age 10 (putting her birth year in 1840, not 1845 as indicated on the death cert.). A brother is on the same census, named Hampton, and I found a Hampton James living in CA with Mary A. and husband William Reynolds in the 1900 census, so I'm fairly certain I have the correct family. Beyond this, I'm not sure how to proceed to connect our family with the infamous outlaw. Kathy and I have both viewed the Jesse James family tree and neither of us found a connection. But it's compelling because Jesse (b.1847) and Mary A. are born in the same generation and in the same state, although different counties. Perhaps distant cousins?

Concerning Sidney S. Brown, I have not been able to locate him in the 1870 census. It would be interesting to see if the 22 year old was still in NY or had started his way west by that time. My info on Sidney in the 1880 census is speculative and unconfirmed, but it is the best lead I have at this time. I am also stumped on the next generation beyond his parents, Royal H. Brown & Alida Potter. Royal named his first born John, Sidney's oldest brother. I found the names John Brown and Polly Spaulding in NY, who had a son named Royal H. and who was born in the correct year, but I have been unable to find enough information to confirm it's our Royal.

"An illustration of sorts--and an engaging digression--brings to the fore a recent hypothesis promulgated by N Brent Kennedy that Melungeons are descended from Ottoman Turks. Evelyn McKinley Orr, a member of the previously mentioned Melungeon Research Committee, wrote a few years back that her Melungeon ancestor, David Goings (whom she discovered in the fall of 1989) must have had Turkish ancestry because Norman Goings of Selma, Indiana, wrote that in 1939 that "Tuckahoe" was the term used by the family to describe itself. Somebody suggeted to Orr that "Tuckahoe" was a "nicname for people from Turkey." Orr stated that David Goings married in Montgomery County, Virginia, and that his wife's family were members of the New River German settlement."

"Tuckahoe" is not at all a misreading or mispronunciation of Turkish. Tuckaho unequivocally alludes to the Virginia origins of Goings. In "Tennessee Civil War Veterans questionnaires", George Washington Lewis of Lebanon, Tennessee, stated that his father Carroll Lewis was from James River in Virginia and that his grandfather Samuel Lewis was a colonel in the Continental Army during the Revolution. He commanded a "regiment of Tuckaho Indians." "Tuckaho" was once a widespread sobriquet for Virginians, especially those from east of the Blue Ridge. The term is derived from thePowhatan language and originally applied to several different roots, tubers, and fungi, some used by Indians for food, especially in the form of bread.Tuckahowas possibly consumed by poor Virginians of every color, for the wordcame to refer to Virginians generally. TheTuckahoIndian regiment mentioned by George Lewis was composed of foot soldiers from the piedmont counties of Albermarle, Fluvanna, Louisia, and so forth, and was but one of severalVirginia regiments of Indian soldiers. Several reputed Tennessee Melungeons had been Revolutionary soldiers in piedmont Virginia before moving down to Newman Ridge. In fact, several mustered and served in the general region of the said Tuckaho Indian regiment. In the Tennessee Civil War Veterans questionnaires, George Lewis stated that the farm he grew up on near Lebanon, Tennessee, was worked before the Civil War by hired free Indian labor..."

"The latest exotic-origins movment, favoring connections with Portuguese, Ottoman Turks, or possibly other Mediterraneans, has generated a peculiar following on the Internet--another virtual community. For such folks,Melungeons are a hot topic, as illustrated by five recently published books and the developement of the ad-hoc "Melungeon Research Committee" noted earlier in this essay. However, I suggest that the current movement is butthe latest in a series of mid to late 20th century reinventions of the Melungeons. Unfortunately, while hypothetical "Off-shore Others" flood Appalachia and the word-wide web, real Melungeon histories and historic identities are being cast aside." CS Everett Appalachian Journal.

I am suggesting that the controversy over the Melungeon ethnicity is motivation of some of these vigorous attempts to deny the well documented black and white African ancestry of the Mihil-Thomas Gowen line. The more adamant of those who have denied African, have actually traveled to Turkey with Mr. Kennedy and strongly support his opinions. While I have high regard for Brent's character, I strongly disagree with him on the Turkish origin of Melungeons. He and I continue to communicate frequently and have none of the rancor that is directed to me by some of his followers on this sub.

Some of these so called exotic origins of Melungeons are coming under extreme academic fire, many of those theories will not survive scrutiny or time. We would be wise to keep that controversy separated from sound Gowen research toavoid being labeled as re-inventors of history. I rarely find anyone with the GRF objecting to Mihil and Thomas' Negro kinship who did not first have a strong opinion about the origin of the Melungeons. On the contrary, my article on the origin of the Melungeons was inspired from convincing documented archives of the GRF. This is how it should be. You should state your opinions without going into attack mode by talking about "speculation" etc. Let others make their decisions on the documentation. Genealogy, precisely documented, should drive the theory, not the other way around.

Based on these searches, it appears to me that this Rodney R. Gwin is a son of a Harry and Iva Gwin and that he moved away from home for some reason by the time he was fifteen. He was born in Indiana, which is where my Gwins were; however, he was living in central Indiana--Madison Co., not the southern part--in 1900, north of where my family lived but very near where the "other" Indiana Gwins lived. This is not conclusive, of course, for he could have been born in the southern part of the state and only lived in Madison Co. because he was boarding there. At this point, then, we are pretty much forced to abandon this pursuit via census reports, since there is no 1890 census available (it was burned), and try some other route such as birth certificates, etc.

I think Ken should be included in the history. I noticed that Stacey and Ron were (Kenneth Clark Brown, born 9-6-56 in Long Beach, CA, brother of Kathy)
Grandma Brown (Georgie Louise) was born on 9/4/05 in California
Grandpa Brown (Lester Sylvester Brown) was born on 5/15/l896 in Nebraska
Grandma Dutch was 22 when she married in 1927 – also include her middle name “Carey” She was born inCarey, OH (Dorcas Carey Felker)
My grandfather’s name (Grandma Dutch’s father) was Henry Robert Felker and he was born in Indiana in Sept. 1856 and died in 1908. I guess this is what is written already, so never mind .
My grandfather and grandmother married in 1899 – her maiden name was Dorcas Dow and she was born Nov. 27,. 1852
Your dad and I were married in 1952
Guess that’s about all for this time because I need to go each lunch before I go to my foot therapy. This was very, very interesting to me.

Hi, John, yes that is the Lester Sylvester Brown that belongs to us.
George said that there was a sister of Rosa and Lester and her name was Nettie (sp?).
Also possibly there was an Elisabeth (sp?) that was their sister.
Lester Sylvester Brown died in May 1969, and
Georgie Louise died in October of 1989.
Also Dorcas (Dutch) Shaw died in November 1970 and
John Clark Shaw died in January 1984.

I just remembered that you don’t have my Aunt Kay’s (Katrina Felker (Bright) year of death. She died in l976.
She was married to Leonard Phillip Bright.
They had two children, Natalie Rose and Richard Phillip.
Also George just told me that his father (Lester Sylvester) had another sibling and his name was Lee B. Brown.
I don’t know when my Uncle Al (Alvin Felker) died. It was after my Aunt Kay and Mom.
He was married to Nancy (don’t know maiden name) and didn’t have any children together.
She had one from another marriage, a daughter.
Now George just found his dad’s death certificate and it says his year of birth was 1895.
Also my grandmother, Dorcas Dow Felker, was remarried (don’t know the date, but many years later) to a J. N. (think it was John) Brown.
No relation to us, of course.
She died in 1950 in Long Beach.
That’s all for this time. This could get to be time consuming!!

Hi John, A few items:
Gordon's dad's name is Roslyn Elwood Douglas, goes by "Doug."
In the family photo, change James to Doug (James is his father)
In the family photo, Rebecca is the newborn, and Jessica is age 4.
Photo taken May 1989.
Gordon's eldest brother is Roslyn Elwyn--different name than his dad, so he is not a junior.
Married Kathleen Elizabeth Manning on Dec 17, 1966. ( another Kathy Douglas!)
Stacey Douglas married Janet Miller June 26, 1982. No children.
Doug has an older sister, Olive (married William Middleton), and a younger sister Joyce Elizabeth (married Carl McAndrews).
I don't know their dates of birth and marriage. If you would like to call and talk to my father-in-law, his number is.
He has an excellent memory and could give you lots of info about the Douglas clan.
Beth's name Elisabeth is spelled with an "s". Her birthdate is May 29, 1987.
Rebecca's city of birth is Visalia, CA (same as Beth's)
Please change my profession to registered nurse and lactation consultant.
Ron and Kathy Douglas have 3 sons--info is on the pages that I copied. all married now with children.
Georgie Louise Dodds was born 9-4-04, not 1905.
I confirmed that with my mom today.
Ken and his first wife Janice Casey Jones Brown have 2 children--Greg and Leslie--info is on one of the pages that I copied. Divorced.
Ken and Margo Melinda Morales were married June 1, 1996.
Margo did not change her name to Brown.
Whew!! This family tree has many branches!!!
