1970's-era Reunions of

A Page to Celebrate the Memories

The LORD used the ministry of the Navigators in each of our lives to draw us closer to Himself while we were at New Mexico State University.  For some of us, that seems like a long time ago.  These reunions (1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, and the "All-Years" Reunion and Conference in 2009) have helped to bring back the memories, renew and keep friendships and relationships up-to-date, and encourage us in our walks with the LORD. May we all continue here to give Him the praise and honor and glory He deserves until we see Him face-to-face.

We are now in Fort Worth for a kind of furlough after 21 years in Austria. We moved out of that country on June 17, 2006. We have never had a furlough of more than 11 weeks since we moved there. We feel that God is moving us on to join a ministry in Israel.

I have attached a photo taken with some friends in Georgia a few weeks ago. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

God brought Robert Day into the world on July 12, 1949 in Santa Fe though his family lived in Los Alamos. In fact, Bob has lived in Los Alamos and surrounding area nearly all of his life though he left several times to pursue education and career.

He officially accepted the Lord when he was nine years old, answering an altar call at the First Baptist Church. But it wasn’t until Bob was a sophomore in high school (1964 for those who are counting), that he received a wakeup call from the Lord. Bob went through some very difficult life experiences then and realized he needed divine help. He made a lordship decision to obey Christ and commit his life wholly to Him. As a result, a real hunger for Christ captured his heart, and a new excitement about the revealed truth in God’s Word began to grow.

Bob received his mechanical engineering degree from New Mexico State University in 1974. Though looking to go elsewhere, God made it clear that He could use Bob right here in Los Alamos. A door was opened, and Bob took a job with Los Alamos National Laboratories. Bob married Patty Clanton in 1978. Both became members of the Pojoaque Valley Bible Fellowship where Bob served for 22 years. For eight of those, Bob served as an elder. Then the Lord called him to Crossroads and he became one of the first deacons elected to this church. Bob sees the deaconate as an office primarily concerned with serving the needs of the church body; first our own, then the wider Christian body of Los Alamos, and finally to those outside the church.

Classic Engineering, LLC

Located in downtown Grand Rapids, Classic Engineering was founded in 1998 by a multidisciplined core team of engineers who have worked together for over fifteen years.  Classic’s fifteen associates are led by Doug Huyser, P.E., Principal, a structural engineer educated at Michigan Tech University. Rounding out the structural group are Tim Bosma, P.E.; Marlan Freeburg, P.E.; and Karin Kasper, P.E.; plus two structural draftsmen. Classic’s structural team has a reputation for finding quick solutions and having a sharp eye for details. Their broad experience in new and re-build construction projects is focused on commercial, retail, residential, and industrial facilities. Some of their more unique projects include a thatched roof residence (importing materials and skilled labor directly from the Netherlands), and a large sports facility. Classic also provides Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC engineering as well as Steel Detailing services, to deliver projects as a comprehensive design team or by discipline.

We regret that we cannot make the reunion.
We must factor it in--do you do it every five years? Do you allow people over 70 to attend?
(April 10, 2006:70...unbelievable!)

Mr. and Mrs. R. Dwight Hill have invested the past 35 years of their lives in discipling men and women to follow Jesus Christ and apply Biblical principles to daily living. Their primary focus has been to equip lay people to multiply their lives spiritually, thus helping to fulfill Christ's Great Commission to make disciples of all nations. (Matthew 28:18-20)

For the past 20 years the Hill's have concentrated their discipling efforts on leaders in the business and professional community in the United States, Asia, and Europe.

Mr. Hill grew up in Hong Kong, as his father was the director of a shipping company headquartered there.

Mr. Hill is a graduate of Pepperdine University in Southern California, U. S. A., and Mrs. Hill is a graduate of Gordon College in Boston, Mass., U. S. A.

The Hills have two children, Wes and Julie, who were born in the Philippines. Both are married and reside in California, U. S. A. Their children and their spouses are also serious followers of Christ. Together, Dwight and Ruth enjoy three grandchildren.

The Hills reside in Paradise, California, U. S. A., having recently returned from five years residency in Singapore. Mr. Hill is currently writing The Facts of the Matter which enjoys a worldwide audience. Other writings are planned that will enhance this publication with insights, Bible studies, etc.

At the age of 43, Scot went home to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit on December 30, 2005 after a long illness. Scot graduated from Santa Fe High School and attended NMSU in Las Cruces, then went on to technical school to become a certified welder. While living in Las Cruces, Scot was a member of the University Presbyterian Church where he was ordained as a deacon.

He was active in the outreach to the homeless and people in prison. Scot was very involved in the KAIROS and Crossings, both ministries within the prison, where he was able to communicate with and connect with many of the men because of his love and concern for them. Scot also worked with Walk to Emmaeus weekend gatherings, ministering the love of God in many ways. Scot was always willing and able to be outspoken in his faith of the Lord Jesus Christ and shared that faith whenever possible. When Scot moved back to Santa Fe, he attended Christ Church. He was much loved by those who knew him. He managed to keep a positive attitude in the face of his debilitating illness.

He liked to tell all he met that he was an "ordained bilingual deacon" and we will all miss his enthusiastic greetings of "God Bless You!" While on earth, Scot displayed the reality of God and the truth of the Christian Gospel to all who knew him. He is now enjoying the presence of God and praising Him without any more pain or physical limitation.

Scot is preceded in death by his brothers, Mike and Joe, and his mother, Louise.

He is survived by his father, Jack, of Santa Fe; and his siblings: Bill and Debbie Horne of Midland, TX, Linda and Jim Alexander of Snohomish, WA, Nick Horne and Paula Clayton of Santa Fe, NM, Jeff and Marcy Horne of Santa Fe, NM; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

A funeral has taken place at Berean Baptist Church in Santa Fe on January 9th and a Memorial Service will take place at University Presbyterian Church in Las Cruces on Sunday, January 22nd at 3:00 in the afternoon. Rev. John C. Pickett will officiate, and there will be an opportunity for Scot's friends to share memories of him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Gideon's International, PO Box 6118, Santa Fe, NM, 87502.

Taken from the cover of Ed's 2003 book, A Muslim's Heart, available from
Dawson Media, PO Box 6000, Colorado Springs, CO 80934 --- (ISBN 0-9672480-6-X)

"Muslims are not the enemy. They are simply people. People who need Christ. But they're also people who see the world much differently than Western Christians do.

"A Muslim's Heart provides Christians with a crash course in relating to their Muslim friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Without understanding the way a Muslim thinks and feels, and the cultural reason for this, any attempts at evangelism will target the mind without engaging the heart. Geared for Christians who are attempting to relate to Muslims overseas or in their own neighborhood, this book offers practical, field-tested instruction for reaching a Muslim's heart with the hope of Christ."

Joe Jackson grew up in a good Christian home in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was baptized and became a member of the Second Trinity Baptist Church at the age of twelve. Yet he never committed his life to Christ until later. The Lord began to graciously work in Joe's life. He gave his heart to Jesus Christ during his freshman year at New Mexico State University. Through the ministries of Campus Crusade for Christ, The Navigators, and The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Joe's life was dramatically changed. Joe was the fifth-round draft pick by the New York Jets and finished second in quarterback sacks in his rookie year. He played with the Minnesota Vikings' famed Purple People Eaters with Carl Eller, Alan Page and Jim Marshall, and was elected into the New Mexico State University Hall of Fame. Today he travels world-wide as an evangelist.

Hal and Karen Jensen have been with The Navigators for over 35 years. Hal was recruited to the Navigator ministry in 1961 while serving in the U. S. Marines Corps in San Diego. The Jensens have worked with and supervised military, collegiate, community, and Native staff in New Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, California, and Arizona. Hal is an ordained Pastor and served at Saddleback Church in California for over three years, helping Dr. Rick Warren develop his small group ministry. For the past 10 years the Jensens helped pioneer and develop The Navigators’ Native American Ministry and served on the Ethnic Leadership Council of The Navigators. They have recently turned over the leadership of the Native American Ministry so it can be native led.

The Jensens are currently raising funds and moving toward a Sabbatical to plan for the next 15 years.  They will continue to assist and serve in the grassroots development of the Native Ministry, coaching and mentoring as God leads, and help recruit and develop future Native Staff.  They will continue an apostolic expansion of the Gospel through their ethnic contacts and provide some counseling within the Navigators and some consulting outside the Navigators. The Jensens have a unique contribution to our work in influencing generational ministry cross culturally.

Karen is an accomplished disciplemaker and is the director of women’s ministry and assimilation in her own church, Scottsdale Baptist. She speaks extensively throughout Arizona on disciplemaking, mentoring, and generational ministry. Hal and Karen are both mentoring students preparing for the Pastorate, through Phoenix Seminary.

The Jensens have lived in Arizona for 14 years and have three grown married children and two grandchildren.

It is with saddened hearts that we inform you that Hal's and Karen's firstborn, David, died of a heart attack in May 2012 in California. They're on Facebook.

-------------------------------------
Repetitive calving is considered an excellent strategy to maximize milk production over a dairy cow’s lifetime. However, one of the greatest challenges facing the dairy industry is how to most efficiently return cows to the pregnant state soon after delivery of a calf.
Charles R. Staples, an internationally recognized ruminant nutritionist, has researched and identified dietary nutrients that play key roles in improving reproduction. Staples found that feeding supplemental omega-three fatty acids, such as those found in fish, have improved pregnancy rates. Also, feeding other fat sources such as soybean oil, that contain higher concentrations of the essential fatty acids linoleic and linolenic acids, have improved cows’ fertility. These improvements in pregnancy rates are thought to be due to more active ovaries, to a reduction in embryonic death and to an improvement in liver function.
"Utilizing dietary nutrients to coordinate tissues and organs to set up for conception and embryo survival has been the most exciting aspect of my work," Staples says.
Besides obtaining more than $550,000 in funding during the last five years, Staples is regarded nationally and internationally as a speaker and consultant in the field of dairy nutrition. Based upon his work of using dietary nutrients to improve reproduction in dairy cows, Staples was honored in 1998 by the American Dairy Science Association with the Nutritional Professionals Applied Nutrition Award.

HOMESCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP & INFO
We’ve finally achieved critical mass ? there are so many homeschoolers at K2, it’s time to start our own K2 homeschool support group. What this means is that we can network with other K2 homeschoolers for activities, information, lab classes, art projects, a shoulder to cry (or laugh) on, share joys and struggles, or group discounts on outings. For those considering homeschooling this fall, come on over! We’ll hold informational sessions and answer any questions you have. After July, call ahead before you join to see where we’re meeting.

Debbie Emerick Buckler told me she got a letter from her recently--Melissa and her husband are pharmacists in the Albq. area (see Deb's e.mail below).

Monday, 7 Aug 2006: Wonderful! Melissa called and we got to visit by telephone! And the day after the reunion, too! She is a pharmacist at Walgreens in Edgewood, a small but growing community 23 miles east of Albuquerque just off I-40. Her husband Larry recently retired and now works at home. They have no children but are aunt and uncle to her siblings' many kids. Neither of them has or uses a computer at home, but her nephew is into them, and she's excited about finding this webpage and seeing everyone. She says she'll send us a picture or two to post here. Thanks for calling, Melissa!

Bob is an environmental engineer with Brown and Caldwell and Bonnie works part-time as an accountant. Jared graduated from the Naval Academy in 2004 and is in Meridian, MS doing advanced training on jets. He’s had a lifelong dream to be a Navy pilot, and the Lord is enabling him to accomplish that! The Navy also paid for him to get a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering. Amy is getting serious about her job search. She majored in Graphic Design. Bonnie Allen (for the four of us)

I have a cheap little handycam (digital 8) that we could use. It is not a great camera but it would probably work. I haven't tried copying it to a CD/DVD but I'm sure it can be done. To be honest with you I have not really used it that much. I do have a tripod. I will bring it just in case we need it.  I will be happy to be your recording person as well.

I was glad for your phone call John, but you didn't leave me a phone #, so I didn't know how to call you back. We have a caller I.D., but I still couldn't figure it out.
I have to run 2 weddings the weekend of the reunion. (This weekend 4!)
My scrapbooks are pretty much nonexistent. Each of my 3 kids has 2 file boxes that I hope to put together someday. I'm not even sure where to look for old Nav pictures.
Yes, Kathy Dube is a real sweetheart. She does live close in Mesilla. She and her brother Dave built homes next to each other and have a little acreage with pecans. She has her master's in electrical engineering, and they both work at White Sands. Dave's wife died of cancer. Kathy never got married. She's very committed to her Catholic church and gives a lot to it I'm sure. Their mother recently died, and Kathy and Dave took good care of her. Her mom was Presbyterian and her dad was Catholic. Kathy recently took a tour of the Holy Land, and we had a good visit the last time I was there. I'll look up her address and phone # and send them to you. It would be lovely if they were invited to come.
Ed led her to the Lord, and then I followed her up. We have been good friends. I think Ed led Dave to the Lord, too--you'll have to ask him. I got a great letter from Melissa Nilchee  (not married name). She is a pharmicist and wrote me a long, long letter--she became a Christian at an Andre Cole magician Campus Crusade thing, and then I got to follow her up. I remember taking her to see "Jaws" to see how she would react--she had a Navaho straight face all the time, and I got a kick out of her seeing that scary movie.

Hi, John!
It is so good to hear from you and see even the little bit of information about old friends. The pictures on the website are great! I'm sorry I don't have any current ones to scan, nor do I really know how.
Here's a little info about us you can include. Keith and I have a family delivery business (since 1991). We have been homeschooling and are almost through. Luke (21) is about to enter UTD as a junior in Electrical Engineering. Jon (18) has one more year of high school and will begin some community college classes. He plays Varsity basketball in a strong homeschool league. Joshua (16) will be a sophomore and plays Junior Varsity basketball.
This is Rikki Smith Stine's email address.  I'm sure she'd love to hear from you. -- rikkijac@juno.com
We won't be able to make the reunion, but I'm sure it will be great fun and a blessed time!

We moved out of that country on June 17th. We have never had a furlough of more than 11 weeks since we moved there. We feel that God is moving us on to join a ministry in Israel. For Sunday morning, two different churches have asked me to speak. It could be that I will say yes to one of those invitations and not be at the service. Thanks for all your hard work on the reunion! I want to just mention something.....
We are launching a Chinese Missionary Training School in Phuket Thailand in Sept. 2007 with a soft opening this fall just to get it started. I have a power point presentation on this ministry and another one about our first year back in Asia.
I am just mentioning it because this party is not about ministry presentations but just renunion and fun.  Anyway my thought is, what if I invited people to a restaurant on Sunday evening, when nothing is going on, to make a presentation of what work is happening there in southern Thailand? If you think that this is an "impostion" on the reunion, please just say so.....   Please give me your thought.....
OK,  I am winding down the Coyle reunion in North Carolina and heading south on Friday, the Emericks just invited me to stay with them!  It was Joanne that gave me the 4 Spiritual Laws which I read and was born again in 10 minutes flat!
Looking forward to seeing you....

John,
Sorry that we cannot make this year's reunion, but Kathy asked me to send you a recent picture of our family and an update for the website.  We are doing well and certainly appreciate you for providing this rapid "update website."
Our five children are doing well and a short synopsis on each follows:
* Erin, 24, 4th year Ph.D. Physics student at the College of William & Mary studying Theoretical Particle Physics (we'll leave it right there lest I display ignorance in any further description).
* Joanna, 23, 3rd year J.D. student at Ave Maria School of Law hoping to be a prosecutor (if you must have a lawyer in the family at least they can be putting bad guys away instead of chasing ambulances)
* Heather, 22, Senior Music Education at Cedarville University graduating and getting married in December 2006 (her fiancé, Sam, is an Assistant Pastor)
* Kelsey, 10, 5th Grade Homeschooler with interests in music, ballet and social skills.
* Kurtis, 10, 5th Grade Homeschooler with interests in music, basketball and engineering stuff.
Kathy and Paul turn 50 this fall so it's a new chapter in our lives.  Kathy is pumped for the next 8 years of homeschool with the twins.  Paul is 22+ years at Dow hoping to have it go longer but you can never tell with big corporations these days. We are excited about the Lord, church, children, friends, homeschooling, Patrick Henry College and more.  We are trying to master focusing on the few important things in life and meeting with some success. Hope you are all well and have a great reunion.
Blessings,
Paul

For those who are interested, I am a Human Resources and Safety Manager for a large vineyard management company. Since most of our workers are hispanic, my ability to speak Spanish is a tremendous assest. I live in Sacramento, work in Lodi, and travel to our offices in Napa and Healdsburg almost every week. I attend Faith Presbyterian Church nearby. So work and church keep me busy. My youngest daughter, Sarah, is getting married in October. Larissa is a doctoral candidate in molecular biology at the University of Texas in Austin. If anyone wants to correspond, please give them my email.
Hope all is well with you and your family.

We won't back out. Actually, we've been thinking about it for weeks, but looking at this rain made us think that it would be so much better. I hate to admit it, but a bunch of the folks are actually grandparents now and the idea of sitting in the grass doesn't seem to be the thing. We will plan on it and look forward to it.

Let them know there is a heated pool and also a pool table; if their young people want to use it, it will be open and ready to go. Also a hot tub.

The grill is fine, you can let them know it's there so they can grill if they want to.

Directions:
From University Avenue take the frontage road of I-25 South at the University Golf Course. Frontage Road is named Las Alturas. Go one mile south, turn left on Mission Bell. Proceed east 1 mile until you come to the corner of Falcon Drive and Wildwood Place.  Address is 4504 Wildwood Place.  White brick home on the southwest corner.

Paul, my first reaction is, "What a wonderful idea!" I've been trying to think of an alternative site anyway because rain is forecast for Sunday.
THANK YOU both for thinking this through with us and volunteering your home.
We can still notify all the local people to bring lawn chairs, coolers, ice, and bottled water.
Everyone will be bringing his/her own lunch, so you probably won't have to even fire up the grill, especially if we don't mention it and make it available.
I just can't think of any negatives to the idea, except that you guys will have had a herd of people (whom you love, nonetheless!) in your home and will likely have a mess to clean up. But we can get a crew to help you with that.
I'd like to forward your e.mail to a few other people to make the decision more than just yours and mine, but I have a feeling everyone will agree.
I will wait to do that, however, until I hear from you again, just to give you one last chance to back out! :-)
Absolutely a great idea and offer.
THANKS AGAIN for the great idea and for volunteering your home. Talk it over one last time and get back to me, please.

Love to you both,
In Jesus,
John

We have a nice pool with a gazebo that people can sit around and in, a 60' shaded patio, 3 large public areas in the house. We have 3 bathrooms. There is a pool table for the younger set or older set. We have had parties for more than 60 there, so think about it if you want to move the venue from the park. We would be happy to host it. There is a bar-b-q grill people can grill their food on.

Thanks for all the work you have done so far to put this together. The web site is fantastic. Keep up the good work.

We looked at the motels you mentioned last time and the Staybridge Suites sounds good. We were in one for a month here when we first moved in. I have stayed in the Comfort Inn and most likely have some points there based on all the times I have stayed there in my travels. Do you have a Fairfield Inn in town? Howdy John,
Great to hear from you. I'm thinking it's pretty amazing that the relationships formed in the 70's at NMSU are still enduring.

We (Linda and I) have yet to make a reunion, mainly because we've allocated vacation for our high school reunions which occur the year after and 2nd year after the Nav reunion (I'm class of '72 and Linda is class of '73 at Deming). It has worked well for Pete since most Nav reunions have been in close proximity the LCHS reunions (Pete was class of '71).

If we go with a reunion in the fall or spring (nice weather times), there is no alignment with any HS reunion. If, as in the past, the reunion may be aligned with a HS reunion time wise, I'm wondering about shifting a year to align with folks from the class of '72. I have yet to know how many others that would benefit. Most of my friends from '72 that participated in the Nav group are still local to Las Cruces and could probably attend whenever.

Regardless of the timing with a reunion, I'm thinking we will make a strong effort to attend a Nav reunion. I looked over the web site pictures and recognized many of the folks. It would be great to see them again. Thanks for working to pull all this together.

TELEPHONE REPORT: Today the Lord reminded me of Bob Gould. I called his father, who still lives here in LC and who gave me Bob's phone number in Phoenix (see directory above). Then I called Bob and spoke with his son, who told me Bob is working around the clock right now--literally 24/7--and won't be able to correspond with me until this project is completed. But I left him my phone and email address. It was good to talk to his father and his son! I hope to hear from him soon. --John Gwin

Hi John--Wow...thanks a lot for all the work of putting that together. We really enjoyed our time out there and getting to see you the next year as well. God has taken us through some great challenges since being in Tucson...we are now expecting some more in the near future. He has done a lot of healing in areas most never go, for which we are really grateful. Because of that work, we are now more able to assist others. Take care and thanks again. Carl

Hi John: I have been back over two weeks from California and upon arrival home became quite sick with bronchitis and sinusitis, running a temperature for over a week and on two high-powered antibiotics. Am doing better finally. Talked with Pat Irons and Miss, and I want to host a get-together for the gals at my house.

The time would be 1:00 pm on August 5th at 2043 Wagonmound Trail, 88012.  Phone number is still 505-522-8507.
The invitation is open to all the gals involved in ministry and the wives of the guys and older children of the the people involved if they would like to come. We will have dessert and beverages. It was a rich time of sharing the last time, so it will be an informal time. We will probably have a sharing time, but the gals can feel free to come and go as they need. Looking forward to the time. John & Sharon,
Please put us on the list. We plan to be there if we can. I say this because we moved Debbie's parents from Hobbs to Midland last year and have been looking after them. Deb's dad has alzhiemers and her mom is pretty feeble. Deb's mom is still able to take care of her dad, but they don't drive. I don't think this will be a problem unless things get goofy, but they both are declining, healthwise. We look forward to seeing everyone again. We'll keep in touch on the planning and see how things develop.
Thanks for putting Scot's obit on the site.  He were a good brother, in both senses of the word.

Hi, John and Sharon. Thank you. This will give me some email addresses to send my Christmas letter to. I had a letter ready to send out that covers the years 2000 to 2002, but I lost my copy of my address list that was on the computer. Fortunately, I have an old paper copy of the address list, but it's going to take time to type it all into the computer. I'm going to send as many as possible by email. I also need to add an update for this year. Carolyn

Hi, John.
Thank you for getting this started and checking with us on what dates are best. The first or third weekend in August might be better for me. Andrew will be graduating from high school (home school) in June, and in July we will probably be having a family reunion. My scanner rarely works, so if I send a photo, it will have to be much later, by regular mail.

I really want to go to the reunion, but I'm trying to do a lot this summer. I'm still thinking about going. I forgot to mention the reunion to Vicky. I think I gave Vicky's address to somebody, maybe Lonnie, when somebody was asking for addresses.
If you want to call me, my phone number is 714-554-6854. I'll look at the reunion page again later. (I look at it every few weeks.)

Hi, John.
Here is a copy of the email I originally sent to Lonnie on June 19. I looked and didn't find a response from him, which I would expect if he had received it. Maybe I sent it to the wrong email address. I  sent Jim a copy of this email after I sent it to Lonnie, just to make sure I didn't say anything that Jim didn't want me to say. Jim said everything was okay. If you want to put the original email below on the website, it's okay. I guess I should have sent you a copy at the same time, too. We can definitely use prayer for God's will for our relationship.
Carolyn

Original email:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, Lonnie.
I'm sorry I'm taking so long to let you know if I can go to the reunion.  I thought I was free that weekend, but my plans for August are up in the air right now.  I might not know until August 1, but I'll set that as a deadline for letting you know, unless you need to know sooner for reservation purposes. If I do go, I'm hoping my boyfriend Jim will go with me, so everyone can meet him. I really do want to go, but I might end up trying to do too many things this summer if I do go.
Just to let you know a little bit about my boyfriend, we started dating two years ago in September. We're praying about marrying, and we're waiting for God to give us the answer. We met at church. He's been an engineer at Boeing for the last 2 1/2 years. He started going to Biola last fall, working on a graduate degree in apologetics. He's thinking about changing to their seminary (Talbot Seminary). Evangelism is what's on his heart, especially the people he knows. He only wants to do God's will. So that's a short summary about Jim.
Let me know if you need to know before August 1, and I'll make sure I decide by whatever deadline you have.

Two people you may not have known, but who were in my Bible Study were John Lucero from Lincoln, NM, and Medardo Sanchez from El Paso. Lonnie may have known them.
Thanks for the web site. Very well done. Broomfield and Highlands Ranch and Aurora are suburbs of Denver. We both know Janet Malm and Mike Hogan now live in this area.
Vee Ann and I have been married 26 years, in the Denver area for 28. I work for the Federal Aviation Administistration (FAA) as a Project Engineer, and Vee Ann works as a nutritionist for USDA. I will send picture(s). That's a promise!!
Keep bangin' on those piano keys, John. I may put together a couple of MP3's starring John Gwin singing a couple of songs. I still have the cassette tape. Of course MP3's can be e-mailed, so stay tuned.

John:
I need to cancel my reservations for the reunion. I am sorry for the late notice. There are too many family activities which demand attention. My youngest daughter Meredith is returning from a two week backpacking trip on Friday afternoon. I have another engagement in CO over Labor Day with my eldest daughter Mallory. She is just completing Basic Training at the Air Force Academy. Labor Day will be the first time we can spend time with her since she left home in June. The Academy is a bit scary and we would like to provide as much support as possible to her as she begins her fourth class year.
Please give everyone our regrets. Know that our hearts and prayers will be with you all this weekend. My life would not be anything today without the love and support of you all leading me to the Lord, teaching me the basics of discipleship, and allowing me to grow in my faith before you. I am who I am because of your examples thirty years ago.
Blessings,
Dave for all the Morgans

John, the reason Lee and I have not communicated much with you about the reunion is that we will be in ___ until Aug 5, but we still don't know our flight schedule. All arrangements are being made through the NM Legislature & the ___ government, so we are not on the arranging side but the receiving side. I sure wish I could be more certain, but I am hoping that Lee and I and Ben and his wife, Kirsten, will be at the Sat. dinner. Simon, Philip & Caleb will be returning from east TX that day, and two of them would like to come, too, but again we won't know more until they are closer to home. Maybe we could have a reservation for 4, if there is still room, and if anyone has to cancel, we could be notified and might be able to fill in for them. I'm pretty sure all my guys and my "doll" will join Lee and me on Sunday. As soon as we get notice of our flight schedule, we will let you know. At any rate, we are very much looking forward to the reunion with our friends. I, personally, wish we could just blow off this trip to __.  I'm already planning to take a sleeping pill for the flight home so I can visit when we get back and not be so tired!
Thanks for doing so much planning and communicating on this weekend. Ben and Kirsten are expecting their first, our first grandbaby, Christmas Eve. Can't wait to see all the grandbaby pictures floating around our group! Moira, for Lee, too.

Subject: Reunion

Dear John,
I'm very disappointed to have to write this email, but Lee & I will not be back from ______ until Sunday midnight! We will miss the whole reunion. Caleb wants to go to the dinner, if he can talk one of his brothers into going, but I think they'd be just fine dropping in to the picnic. Let me know what we need to pay for them to attend the picnic, or if I should encourage them to attend the dinner because of reservations.  I'm hurt that the ________ governmental official & whoever is the contact in the NM legislative offices didn't even care about our plans, but there's nothing I can do. Even tho' we've been notified, we still don't have tickets to prove this change in plans, but I thought I'd let you know what it's looking like. I hope someone has to stick around at least on Monday that I could visit with! I'm trying not to fight this whole thing, as it upsets me so much, but I'd also really like to be here for the reunion & at least be sure of our plans so you could plan earlier for numbers.  Just one more reason why I hate the legislature & only endure the inconveniences & demands because I think God wants us here.  I'm also already dreading the next legislative session because I should have a little grandbaby here in Las Cruces that I'd much rather cuddle!
Have a good day--surely you are a little more control of your plans. Of course, we never really are in control if we've given control of our lives to God. Somehow, I think God would have me at the reunion rather than off in _______. Hmmm. Is God really in control or not? Of course He is, so why do I feel not???
In Christ's hand,
Moira

Howdy! Such a blessing browsing through memory lane--cool web site! Just a note to let you know we will not be attending the reunion and also a small up-date to where in the world we are for now. (Let me check.) Jack 's job (Contract Computer Design Engineer) brought us recently to the Houston area. Valerie (23) is completing a B. S. degree in Business/marketing; Karen (21) is completing an Assoc. degree in Business; they are looking forward to finishing in December and going to Bible school together in January 2007.  Stephanie (19) is going to Peru in July with Teen Mania and will attend T.M.'s Honor Academy. Ryan (16) is busy with youth activities, home-school, and sports.

John,

Attached is a copy of my proposed letter to people who are on the address list from 2001. I realize that quite a few of these addresses are no longer current, but it is the best I have right now.  I will try to make better use of e-mail because it is easier to respond to it. Please look over the letter and let me know if I have omitted any information, or if you have any suggestions. I plan to try to get it out next weekend (at this point that may not be realistic), so I will need your response soon.

I got a letter from Char Hoskins, so you can include her e-mail address in your file. Her address is twitti53@cs.com. She is raising support for a trip that she and Ed are making to Lebanon early this summer with some students interested in reaching the Muslim world. You may want to contact her and publicize their trip to the Nav gang. I think some may want to help "grandpa" Ed in this venture.

She also mentioned that their son, Matthew, is in Las Cruces getting his master's degree while helping attend to his grandparents. Their daughter, Maria, is expecting their first grandchild in April. The day after we got her letter, Nathan called and informed us that they are expecting as well, probably some time in October. I guess the old gang is slowly moving from students to grandparents.

I called Hal last night and he said he would put the reunion on his calendar. He is scheduled to share with us Sunday morning. He also said that he would be glad to help us with hotel reservations. His daughter works for one of the major chains and can get group reservations for $39.00 per night. That is about as good as we can get.

I would take care of it but I don't know motels in the Las Cruces area very well. Perhaps you can get someone to call Hal and work out the details with his daughter. I left Hal's phone number at home, but I will try to get that to you soon. I thought I better try to get this letter to you without any further delays.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for the letter.

Yours and His,
Lonnie

John,

It is high time to get back to you with the information I have received concerning attending the reunion.  The following is the basic information I have received.  I will try to forward the letters to you so you can see what has been written.

..........Name.............................Attending?..........e-mail address...............need hotel?
Cosmo & Suzette Tomaselli........No.............cosmotomaselli@msn.com

David & Marcy Morgan..............Yes..........david_morgan@comcast.net.........yes
Lee & Moira Rawson..................Yes..............moirarawson@gmail.com
Ann Hermes................................Yes.................ahermes@nmsu.edu

Some additional e-mail addresses I collected along the way but have not given me a definite response are

drpatty37@msn.com............(Days)

You will need to add Hal and Karen Jensen to the list, but I don't have their e-mail address. Was Hal able to help on the motel reservations?  I suppose we can offer to pay their motel costs and collect enough at the reunion to cover it.

The only one that I thought I could contact but so far have not succeeded is Bob Anderson. My letter got returned and e-mail seems to have vanished. I think I will e-mail Ed Newell to see if he can help me. Perhaps Bob is still supporting them.

I will do my best to keep you better informed of the responses I get. Perhaps they won't be coming so fast now that the first group of them have arrived. Let me know what you have been arranging for everything else. In some cases (like ours) we may have some adult children attend the dinner as well, but I will try to get that information when we need it.

Keep in touch and may God continue to bless you.

Lonnie

Subject: Reunion

John,

I have been trying to e-mail you but as usual, my mail comes back. Let me give it another try before I send this snail mail.

Things have been hectic lately, so I will try to get a message to you during a lull at work. I can't remember all the details and my data is back home, but I think I have most of the essential information memorized.

Frank and Laura Strickland told me they were coming when I called again about two weeks ago. He has probably contacted you by now. I did give him
the information about housing, so he should have made reservations as well.

Moises Montoya said he definitely would be there.  He was going to call David West to see about sharing a room and cutting down on expenses.

David West said he would be there if he could get someone to care for his ostrich which are in need of constant care. I think he will be there, but it is not for certain.

Bob and Patty Day plan to be there. Their daughter, Abby, is getting married this weekend, so they are up to their ears in planning right now. They will bring most of their children but were asking about some alternative entertainment for them during the banquet. Their youngest is about six now, so they are not infants. Do you know of anything planned for the children?

Mike and Lee Delano will not be there. They have a vacation in Wisconsin planned for that time. It is a family reunion so it was not very easily rescheduled.

I still have not heard back from Ralph or Donna, but hope to soon.

The Theyes are still somewhat uncertain of their schedule. I will be there, and I am sure Nathan and his wife, Becky, will be there. Maria is quite sure of being there, and I think Andrea will also be there. Part of the uncertainty is that Jonathan will be home on leave from Iraq during that time. He thought it would be earlier, but the Army doesn't always do what is expected.

He arrives August 1st or 2nd, and his plans are very uncertain. He would like to join us, but it depends on his girlfriend who is the primary reason for coming home during his two-week leave. If the two of them go, we will have seven of us at the banquet. It will be somewhere between three and seven.

What do the numbers look like now? Do we still have room left at the banquet? How about rooms at the hotel? Maria and I are planning to stay at our house, but if everyone goes we will need a hotel room.

Do you know if Delie needs a ride from the airport?  I e-mailed her that we could pick her up but haven't gotten a reply.

I know all these uncertainties are making your job very difficult, but I am sure things will work out all right. Keep in touch these last weeks. Let me know if you need anything else from me other that the number from our family who will be attending.

I am sure you are aware that Pete and Jeannie Gerhard are planning to attend. I asked Pete to be responsible for a communion service on Sunday morning. He is planning to do that.

Do we have the Christian school for the worship service again?  That worked out very well last time. We could join a church worship service, but the private service seemed to be special.

Thanks for inviting Bill Horne to lead some singing. That is appropriate for both the banquet and the worship service. When were you planning for him to lead singing?

Gratefully, Lonnie

Sorry we won't be around next summer, but we'll enjoy hearing about the shindig you folks put on!

2006 Reunion Plans
Updated 2 Aug 2006 at 6:00 p.m. Reunion Daylight Time

The Reunion
Committee:

Lonnie Theye, Missie Lockyear, John Gwin, Tom Taylor, Ann Hermes, Pat Hippo, Bill Horne, Bob Altuna, anyone else who wants to be! Volunteer yourself! or call John at 505-522-2171   :-)

When it
will be:

Saturday and Sunday, August 5 and 6, 2006, are the finalized dates! Mark your calendars...

Where the Banquet
will be:

SI Italian Bistro, home of Sweet Indulgence Bakery -- 523 E. Idaho, Las Cruces, NM -- (505) 523-1572 (see menu

We have an update on the banquet site. Several have had to change their reservations to regrets, plus the restaurant has verified that they may actually serve a maximum of seventy, not sixty, so the event is still on at SI Italian Bistro.

How much
it will cost:

1. Your own travel here.

2. Your dinner (we'll each order our own from the menu at Si Italian Bistro -- entrees are $6.50 to $16, avg. about $12 -- plus drinks, desserts, tax, and gratuity).

3. Your picnic lunch (purchase your own between church and the picnic from your favorite restaurant or fast-food place and bring it with you to the picnic).

4. Your housing (see below).

5. An offering will be taken at the worship service Sunday morning to benefit the ministries of one or more of our full-time missionaries.

The Speakers:

Hal Jensen has agreed to be at least one of our speakers. Hal is also working on getting Jerry White (former president of the navigators) and Alan Andrews (present U.S Director of the Navs) to come. Maybe Roger Fleming, too?

Housing:

We have a reduced rate for a nearby local motel, Sleep Inn here in Las Cruces. Hal's and Karen's daughter, Kristina Harmon, arranged group rates for us at $39.00 a night!
The rooms are being held on a first-come-first-served basis.
As of 25 July, six of the ten are taken; call in reservations NOW.
Here's how to get those rates. She wrote:

Subject: Group Reservation at the Sleep Inn

John, Good news.  I spoke with the general manager (Pearl Olsen) at the Sleep Inn this morning, and she is holding a block of approx. 10 non-smoking rooms under my name for the reunion.

Just have everyone call the Sleep Inn directly at 505-522-1700 and ask them to book their reservation under the "Kristina Harmon group" for the weekend of August 4th, and they'll book everyone's individual reservation (so they can all pay separately) at just $39/night. You can't beat that!

Sleep Inn
2121 S. Triviz
Las Cruces, NM 88001
(505) 522-1700

-Kristina

How to get there: Sleep Inn is located at the northwest corner of the intersection of University Avenue and I-25. (Triviz is the west side frontage road to I-25.)

Transportation:

Sharon and I drove to Chicago in the summer of 2005 and later calculated that we could've saved a bundle by flying. Yes, gas prices are headed through the roof, and for some, flying might be just the ticket. Let us know if you'll need someone to pick you up in El Paso. Delie Rardin is using this option and has made arrangements for others to pick her up, so don't be afraid to investigate this.

Other
Responsibilities:

Videotaping--Can someone who has a video camera volunteer to do that?

.
Banquet
Decorations:

Mary Curry and others have done this in the past, but we're not planning this for this reunion.

Activities:

1.  Pat Hippo is hosting an informal get-together for the ladies at her home Saturday afternoon at 1:00. She says:
"The time would be 1:00 pm on August 5th at 2043 Wagonmound Trail, Las Cruces, 88012. Looking forward to the time."

To get there from the Sleep Inn (University Avenue and I-25), take I-25 north to the U.S. 70 exit, staying the far right lane. This exit splits three ways: left to Las Cruces, straight to White Sands, and right to Del Rey Blvd. Stay to the right, passing K-mart on your right and moving to the far left lane. Turn left at the light onto Del Rey and go under U.S. 70 through the next light. You'll pass a gas station on your right and then Mars Drive, also on your right. Stay on Del Rey about a quarter to a half mile past Mars Drive and turn right onto Settler's Bend. Follow this two blocks to Wagonmound Trail on your right.

2.  Rather than having a walking tour as we'd originally suggested, the NMSU Alumni Office has told us that they will very likely be able to provide us with a free bus tour of the campus Saturday afternoon! We are working on coordinating this with Pat's shindig for the gals so that those who want to can make both of these events. Bring your cameras!

.
Picnic:

Note Change of Plans

Plan B:  The weather forecast for Sunday is for rain, so Paul and Mary Curry have graciously offered their house as the site for our picnic.

From Sleep Inn, turn left onto University Avenue and go across the interstate. Turn right at the light onto Las Alturas which is the frontage road of I-25 South. Go one mile south, turn left on Mission Bell. Proceed East one mile until you come to the corner of Falcon Drive and Wildwood Place. Address is 4504 Wildwood Place. White brick home on the southwest corner.

To keep it simple, everyone should still bring her/his own picnic lunch. Many fast-food restaurants are available on El Paseo Drive. Paul says their barbecue grill will be available for any who wish to grill something.

They have a heated pool, so if you want to bring your swim gear and a towel, go for it.

Local folks, please bring a few lawn chairs--thanks!

Paul says:

We have a nice pool with a gazebo that people can sit around and in, a 60' shaded patio, 3 large public areas in the house. We have 3 bathrooms. There is a pool table for the younger set or older set. We have had parties for more than 60 there, so think about it if you want to move the venue from the park. We would be happy to host it. There is a bar-b-q grill people can grill their food on. Let them know it is a heated pool, and there's also a pool table; if their young people want to use it, it will be open and ready to go. Also a hot tub.

Picnic at Preciado Park on campus near married student housing. If you enter campus from University Avenue at Espina Street, continue south to the third stop at Stewart Street. Turn left on Stewart, go two blocks east to Williams; turn right one block to Gregg; turn right again and park along Gregg.

Please park along the curb on the park side (north side) of the Gregg Street. Please do not park on the housing side of the street. We've been assured by the Conferences Services Office (through whom we reserved the pavilion at Preciado) that there will be no parking permits needed nor parking citations issued.

Sunday
Worship
Service:

Mesilla Valley Christian School has again donated the use of their library. The school is located at 3850 Stern Drive in Las Cruces. To get there from the Sleep Inn Motel, go west on University Ave. to El Paseo Road. Turn left and follow it under the interstate. Be in the left lane and turn left at the light onto the frontage road, Stern Drive. The school is about a quarter to a half mile on the right. Enter the building by walking between the main building (Founders Hall) and the gym to the double doors on the left. The library will be to your immediate right.

Lonnie has asked Pete Gerhard to lead the Communion Service.

Tom Taylor has agreed to lead singing with Bill Horne.

Hal has agreed to speak and to invite Jerry White and Alan Andrews to speak also.

Misc.

Five years ago, Dave Morgan took and made copies of the group picture you see at the top of the page.

We're working on getting someone to take pictures for us and to videotape the banquet sharing time. Volunteers?

Financial Statement

Some time back, as the treasurer of the Reunion Committee, Missy Lockyear opened this account. After the 2001 reunion, the Committee decided to get another name on the account for her protection, and so we added my name.

Hundreds of dollars have passed through this account in the past. This year, in an attempt to keep the accounting to a minimum, we're letting everyone pay his/her own way rather than have registration fees and handling all that cash.

As the above statement reflects, there is now a little over $250 (two hundred fifty dollars) left over from 2001. So far this year we have to reimburse Lonnie for postage on the mailings and me $25 for reserving Preciado Park's shelter (non-refundable). Other expenses will probably include the rental of a Porta-Potty and purchase of bottled water for the picnic, communion supplies for the worship service, and maybe a few other items. We hope to use the funds already in the account to handle those expenses, and we'll report them all here.

For the Committee,
John Gwin

Army chaplain offers spiritual comfort to soldiers, families

By Jean Gordon

One of the tasks of Mississippi National Guard Chaplain Don Malin at the U.S. Joint Forces Headquarters in Jackson is counseling soldiers' family members over the telephone. After a year-long deployment in Iraq, Malin now spends his time supporting the state's military families.

To help:
To donate to the Military Family Relief Fund, send your check to the State Treasurer/Military Relief Fund at the State Treasurer's Office, P.O. Box 138, Jackson MS 39205.
For information, call (601) 313-6243.
Chaplain Don Malin of the Mississippi Army National Guard recently traveled to Philadelphia to visit the families of two soldiers killed in Iraq.
When he arrived at one home, he found a grieving father creating a memorial to his son in his home.
"Families sacrifice just as much if not more when their husbands, sons and daughters go out there," Malin said. "I thank them for their sacrifice."

As a chaplain with Mississippi's National Guard, Malin brings spiritual comfort to soldiers in the battlefield — and to their families back home. After his year-long deployment in Iraq, he now travels the state listening to the struggles of soldiers' families and promoting Mississippi's new family relief fund.
Funded solely by contributions, the program offers emergency grants to family members of soldiers serving overseas with the Mississippi National Guard or Reserve.

Gov. Haley Barbour signed a bill in June establishing the program, called the Mississippi Military Family Relief Fund.
The grants are limited to families of military mobilized as a result of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
"A number of people wanted to know how to help," Malin said. "This is one way to help, by putting money into this program."

Still, money troubles are among the many obstacles military families face when spouses get deployed overseas.
"The biggest challenge I have is emotional," said Melissa Tanksley, whose husband has been serving in Iraq since January. "It's the loneliness."

Special to The Clarion-Ledger:

Mississippi National Guard Chaplain Don Malin hands out school supplies to the children in Iraq during Operation Enduring Mercy.

Both members of the National Guard, Tanksley and her husband have five children, ages 27, 18, 13, 10 and 5.
Tanksley works for the Guard as the family program director for Mississippi. The program helps military families with managing child care, sorting out problems with paychecks and setting up support groups.
Though many family problems are logistical — such as having only one parent to shuttle children to school, doctor appointments and sporting events — children are often forced to make sacrifices.

"A lot have their income lowered," Tanksley said. "Kids who normally play ball, go to cheerleading camp or other extracurricular activities...all of sudden can't do them anymore."
Just as spouses endure the emotional toll of being separated, children experience a range of feelings when a parent serves overseas.

"It's awful on your kids," Tanksley said. "All of a sudden daddy's gone."
And each child copes with the absence differently. In Tanksley's family, her 5-year-old girl's stress-related chest pains landed her in the hospital, and her 13-year-old son's grades started to drop.
"There wasn't anybody in his class who knew what he was going through," she said. "He felt like an outcast."

But as the conflict in Iraq has dragged on, teachers increasingly prompt students to write cards to soldiers and create care packages to ship to the battlefield.
Tanksley said such community support is key to helping military families cope during wartime

History

* The heritage of the United States Army Chaplaincy reaches far back into history. Both ancient and modern societies have turned to religion in periods of conflict.
* The Old Testament often refers to priests accompanying troops into battle such as this passage from Deuteronomy 20:2-4: "Before you go into battle, the priest will come forward to speak with the troops. He will say, 'Listen to me, all you men of Israel! Do not be afraid as you go out to fight today! Do not lose heart or panic. For the LORD your God is going with you! He will fight for you against your enemies, and he will give you victory!'."
* The modern chaplaincy's roots are essentially medieval Catholic in origin. The Council of Ratisbon (742 A.D.) first authorized the use of chaplains for armies, but prohibited "the servants of God" from bearing arms or fighting. The word chaplain itself also dates from this period.
* During the Revolutionary War, chaplains served in every campaign and on every battlefield. Their duties included accompanying soldiers into battle, preaching in camp, visiting and caring for the sick and wounded and ministering to the dying.

And Malin's role is a critical part of that support.
"Some families are more comfortable talking with the chaplain," Tanksley said. "It's confidential."
Since the Revolutionary War, military chaplains have accompanied U.S. forces wherever they have served.

Chaplains are ordained by individual religious denominations before they join the military. They represent the spectrum of religious groups in United States and include members from Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Orthodox, Buddhist and Muslim faiths.
Malin has been a chaplain with the 168th Engineer Group of the Mississippi National Guard since the early 1990s.

His civilian job is as a Bible teacher at Mount Salus Christian High School in Clinton.
While mobilized in Iraq during the first year of the conflict, he led Bible studies and worship services for soldiers. But the biggest part of his job on the battlefield was counseling.
"People were having problems communicating back home at first," he said. "Soldiers were real upset they couldn't talk to their wife or their family."

Malin said the stress became so great for one soldier that the man wrote a letter with a list of people he intended to kill. The man then gave the letter to Malin.
After reading the letter, the chaplain talked the soldier into handing over his weapon.

"His coming to me was a way of getting help," Malin said, adding the soldier was later transported to Germany for psychiatric treatment.
Now that he's back home, Malin has shifted his focus to comforting the families of soldiers who have been wounded or killed.
He also lends support to those coping with a spouse's long deployment.

Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Tim Powell said the new emergency relief fund can help ease a family's financial burden — which in turn lessens soldiers' worries about about their spouses and children back home.
"It gives that soldier assurance that his family is taken care of," Powell said. "His attention in the fight should not have to be with problems at home."

The funds pay for nonrecurring expenses, such as emergency home or vehicle repairs or a one-time house payment.
"The Legislature in their wisdom wanted us to have the ability to do this," said Col. Robert Thomas of the Mississippi National Guard. "But it was up to the people of Mississippi to fund it."
Mississippians can donate directly to the fund or designate a contribution through their state tax return.

There are more than 12,000 soldiers in Mississippi's Air and Army National Guard. Some 3,400 are deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Powell said the fund is designed to take care of emergencies as quickly as possible.

"When that soldier is conducting his mission 'in country,' he needs to be 100 percent focused on what he's doing," he said. "A few seconds of distraction can cause injury or death of him or any of his soldiers. So it's important the soldier knows his family is being taken care of at home."
