Could
the following be the family of our Henry
and Nancy?
I
don't think so, personally, since
according to the information I have,
Wendell's grandparents, Wm. H. Small
and Martha Ann Cooley Small, would've
only been 13 and 11 years old,
respectively, in 1850, and the 1850
census shows the son, William, to be
age 26. But I could've erred
somewhere, so I'll post this here
until we know for sure. First,
then, is Marsha Rising's post on
Genforum.com, followed by that family (to which she
refers) in the 1850
census of St. Clair Co., MO.]
William
H. Small b. 1792 in KY; moved to ?? Illinois. Wife
Nancy. Moved to St. Clair County, Missouri where he d.
1852 leaving wife Nancy, children Clara, Henry Toles, William, Polly, John
and Albert. Can anyone provide additional info?

POB
narrows
down
the date of the move to Oregon to the years 1851-1857, but
my guess is that both these families came out to Oregon on
the same wagon train; if I'm right, then we can use the

the dates of Nancy's and Malinda's births, above. |

This
is
Wendell's
grandfather,
b. in Missouri.
Speculation arises when I wonder why the move was made
to Oregon. Could it have been to avoid the issues of
slavery and the Civil War? Look at the dates of birth of
the children, all of whom were born in Oregon during or
after the war. Further, though there are two Small families in Cottage Grove in 1860 (see 1860 census above), neither seems to be the family of this William. Our William H. Small would've been 23 years old and MAYBE just married. I checked all 24 pages of the 1860 Cottage Grove/Eugene census, but didn't see him there. I'm also looking for him Missouri, but nothing yet. He could've been on the trail that summer and missed the census. [OK, according to the 1870
census of Monroeville
Twp., Colusa, Colusa Co., CA, just nw of
Sacramento--some 300+ miles south of the Eugene area,
there is
a William Small, age 23 and single, b. MO, a stock
raiser, living there. Everything fits for this to be
our William, out on his own, working a trade.
Keep in mind, however, that this is only
speculation at this point.
Nevertheless, giving even more credibility to this possibility is the fact that in the 1880 census (below), William's daughter Margaret is listed as having been born in California. If this is he, then, in Monroeville, CA, in 1870, then it is certainly possible that our William, while living and working there, met and married Martha, then moved back to Oregon. If this were the case, they would have great reason to go back to California to visit her parents, and especially to allow her parents to see the birth of their newest grandchild, Margaret.] |

light. |
