the handwritten notes of Orley Bush Gwin, my g-grandfather, for Caroline Gwin's

read the hamberlain quite clearly, but the first
letter is hard to read, could easily be a C. John

I'd say that pretty much seals it up!]

Gladys Saunier is the daughter of John and
CeeCee Dunn, and Henry, her widower,
returned to Stark Co., OH, after she died;
B--this
small marker is set beside and to the left
of the Dunn marker and reads "Father, J. H.

"Mother" (however, I saw the name

BINGO!
On a hunch that Caroline, last seen at age 16
living at home, would be married and living
near her parents, I did an Ancestry.com
search of the 1870 census of
Stanton/Miami/Kansas for any female by the first name of
Caroline. There were only three, and
this one is
(1) ten
years older than our Caroline was in 1860,
(2) b. in Iowa, and
(3) living only 3 doors from her
parents and 2 from her brother! Further,
according to the 1880 census, she is
(4) the daughter of parents born in
Tennessee and Kentucky, respectively!
No, this doesn't prove she's our
Caroline, but I am personally convinced this
is she. If so, then we know her middle initial
and the names and dates of birth of three of
her children.

Edgar's age leaves a large gap

Here is Maude, still single. Let's
see if we can find her married in 1900.

Hoping beyond hope to find a Gladys,
Eva, or Maude of the right age and married to
someone in Paola in the 1900 census, I search
all the other 32 pages of it but to no avail.

Aha! Caroline reports here that she
only had three kids, all of whom are still
alive. This may mean that Edgar H. was not
their child at all; however, it could also
mean that she does not care to
report/admit/talk about the deaths of other
children. An Edgar, age 1, was present in the
home in 1880, whom they reported to be their
son.

This is a single man. In May 2008, I
traveled to east Kansas and found the graves
of John H. and C. C. Gwin Dunn at Paola.
Located directly behind these graves are the
graves of a family by the name of Alvin and
Maude Joyce! Could Maude be the youngest
daughter of the Dunns and this Andrew the
younger brother of Alvin?

This census data, compared to the
1870 census (and especially the cemetery photo
of the Alvin and Maude Joyce graves in the
plot right behind John and Carolyn's) has me
totally convinced that this is our Alvin...

Ah. Now Carrie confesses that she
did indeed bear five children, only three of
whom survived. At least we know who those
three are--perhaps we can find them the same
way we found Carrie herself.
