SOURCES:
I started with the work I inherited
from my uncle, my dad's brother, the late
James Bassett Gwin II
(1912-1984),
which he began compiling in the year 1950.
James said he obtained some of the information from
Memorial Record
of Alabama. My hat is off to Uncle James and all these
diligent researchers (below)!
Most of the
TOP part of this information
-Return to my Vardaman
Homepage for much more) comes from the priceless
research of
Mr. Jesse H. "Jack" Vardaman of Alpharetta, GA, my
2nd cousin, who assures me that there is quite a bit of only partially
correct information out there. But MOST of what he gave me is
clearly proven, and what is not is based on his distinguished analyses
of documented material. He is a son of Jesse H. Vardaman, who is a son
of Marshall E. and Clara "Odie" Carlisle Vardaman, my paternal
grandmother's brother and sister-in-law. In January 2002, I
enjoyed a tour of east Alabama with Jack as my guide--what a
delight! He asked me to transcribe his material to my website,
and that abovementioned page is the first installment.
Many thanks, too, to cousins Sherri
Foster, DSFoster@kscable.com;
Teresa Harris, tharris@arkansas.net;
and
most recently, Linda Davis, LINDYLAP@aol.com, for sending
additional information on Edwy's siblings and especially Hilda Tomme
and her family!
I have now begun to go through these
entries one at a time to look for them in later census records and on
Findagrave.com.

[John M. Gwin Note:
Jack believes this first wife of James may have been
Sabra Liles/Lyles for two reasons:
(1) her married name is Vardaman, and from census records, she's the
only possible person who could've been married to him; and (2) the name
Liles is the middle name of Jack's and my gg-grandpa, Edwy Liles
Vardaman (who would become Old William's g-grandson); Sabra was the
mother of William's first two children and possibly the first three;
(m2. Jane Johnson); seven known children]

David Crockett Tomme was a son of Joel Clinton Tomme and Hilda Jane
Vardaman; he was married to Virginia Ann Cash (third daughter of Moses
Reuben Cash and Pheletia W. Taylor) on Feb 16, 1861 at the home of her
father.
Shortly thereafter, David travelled to Ft.
Smith along with friends from Calhoun County, and on Oct 26, 1861, he
joined Co. "K" ("Calhoun Invincibles"), 4th Arkansas Infantry. After
his enlistment, the 4th fought the Battle of Pea Ridge, March 6, 1862,
the largest battle to take place west of the Mississippi River. The
regiment then moved east to Mississippi and fought in the Siege of
Corinth, MS, during the summer of 1862.
The 4th never returned to fight in Arkansas.
For the remainder of the war, the 4th fought in several of the largest
battles in the south, including: Battle of Richmond, KY, 1862, Battle
of Murfreesboro, TN, Dec 1862, Battle of Chickamauga, GA, Sept 1863,
Siege of Chattanooga, Sept--Nov 1863.
Through the summer and fall of 1864, the 4th
was in the Atlanta Campaign as a part of the force attempting to stop
Gen'l Sherman. After Atlanta fell, the 4th was sent back to Tennessee
where they fought the battles of Franklin and Nashville. On March 19,
1865, they fought their last major battle at Bentonville, NC.
By the end of the war, David had risen in rank
to 2nd Sgt. and was the regiment's 6th ranking officer.
He returned home to Bradley Co. (now
Cleveland) where he and Virginia were active in the community and
raised their family.
As other family members had done previously,
David and Virginia later moved to central Texas where they lived out
the remainder of their lives.

MRS. ANNAH
OVERTON
My friend has gone Home. The last loving act has been done for her and
the mortal remains of Mrs. Annah Overton, widow of the late J. H.
Overton, Jr., lies in the Harlow cemetery only a short distance from
where she was born. Lovely of form, beautiful of character, kindly,
gracious and loving she who is no more has left to friends and loved
ones the memory of a guiless life and the assurance that her gentle
spirit no more harrassed by pain, has passed through the gates not made
with hands. "How blest the righteous!"
Annah Ophelia Tomme was
born near Toledo, Sept. 1st 1887. She joined the Baptist Church when
young and in the years of her early womanhood was married to Prof. J.
H. Overton, whose death preceeded hers. She died June 3rd, 1913,
leaving four dutiful daughters, Mrs. W. L. Jones, Misses May, Grace and
Ruth Overton, all of whom were here when the change came. May our
Father comfort them, keeping them in the hollow of His hand until, in
the fullness of time, this dear family circle shall be brought safely
to the Homeland without the loss of one.
As a neighbor, wife, Christian friend, and
mother, my friend was all one could wish for. Farewell till the shadows
lift and the glory dawns.
A short service was held at
the home, Bro. Brown conducting the service at the cemetery.
Fittingly beautiful floral
tributes were sent by many friends. The Woman's Missionary Union, the
United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sigma Tau Club sent
especially beautiful pieces.

J. W. Cash
DIED: At his home in
Bowman township Wednesday, June 29, 1898. Mr. James W. Cash. Mr. Cash
was native of Georgia, but moved with his parents, Mr. Ruben and Mrs.
Felitia Cash, to this state when quite a boy. He has spent most of his
life within the present limits of Cleveland county.
He entered the Confederate army
when 18 years of age and was in several hard fought battles. He was
always to be found in the ranks fighting bravely for the cause he
loved. He was wounded once, but soon rejoined his command and did
valiant service to the end of the war.
During the war when but nineteen
years of age, he married Miss Laura J. Tomme with whom he lived
pleasantly until sixteen years ago when death called her away. From
this marriage he leaves four children survivng him.
Some ten or twelve years ago he
married Mrs. Ross who survives him. To them was born a son, but he
preceded his father by one year to the better world.
Mr. Cash was a good man, a good
citizen and a kind Neighbor. He was a hard-working, painstaking man who
was always in fair circumstances. He never talked about his neighbors
but preferred to do what he could to make the world better. He was a
consistent member of the Baptist church and had for quite a while been
a deacon in the New Hope church and was one of the standbys of that
church.
His aged mother, two brothers,
Rev. W. H. Cash and General Cash, and a sister, Mrs. J.M. Whorton, are
the only ones of a large family to survive him. To the sorrowing wife
and relatives we extend our sympathy.

[Jack Vardaman note: I have a copy of his obituary which states that he was
in his 71st year. If this is true, his correct year of birth
would have been between June 1783 and June 1784. If this were to
be correct, Joseph would have very definitely been a son of Jane
Johnson Vardaman, not Sabra Lyles Vardaman, and probably
only a half-brother to William and Thomas. However, on the 1850
census Joseph is shown as 69 years of age which would place his birth
in 1781--the date furnished to me many years ago by another
researcher. His age category on the 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses
is so broad that it could agree with the 1781 date as well as a 1783 or
1784 date.]

[Jack
Vardaman Note: James (22.04 above) is reported to have
had 7 children. We know positively of the three sons (William,
Thomas and Joseph) who all married Vining sisters. We also
know positively of one daughter, Rachel, who married Jacob
Soutar. In addition, we know of two more daughters -- Nancy
who married a Mr. Martin and the youngest who is believed to
have been named Sally -- from the Johnson family records,
although I have no proof for these latter two. The name of the
seventh child, undoubtedly another girl, is unknown to us. By
interpolation, this child had to be older than either Rachel or
Sally. I say that this child was undoubtedly another daughter
because had she been a son, I believe that we would have some record of
him just as we have extensive records for the first three sons.]

Hi John,
Saw your posting regarding Hilda J Vardaman. She was the daughter of
Thomas Vardaman and Annie Vining. I think you already know
that though. Hilda married JOEL CLINTON TOMME Sept 1, 1831 in
Meriwether CO GA. Joel C Tomme was a Missionary Baptist preacher.
You can find him referenced in HISTORY OF ARKANSAS BAPTISTS (page 208)
by J.S. Rogers.
The children of Hilda and Joel were
: William, James Riley, Thomas, David Crockett, Marion Elizabeth,
Missouri William, Joseph A, Sarah Frances, Laura Jane, Jesse Mercer,
and Marshall Searcey.
The parents of Joel C Tomme were Joseph
Tomme Jr and Zilpha Vining.
I show the siblings to be: Edwy Liles,
Edilda, Rachel, Elizabeth, Jane Frances, Thomas Jefferson, Ruth Ann,
Peter Lafayette.
Hope this helps. You will find that the
Tommes, Vinings and Vardamans married each other a lot.
