Ancestors and Descendants of
Wiley

Aletha Hough

SOURCES:
1. In October 2008,
Mary Lee
contacted me concerning this Wiley Preston, her gg-grandfather.
While we can't yet connect him to my line, I'd run into his name
often in my Alabama searches, and our mutual interest prompted
this page for which she has supplied most of this initial data.
2. The various census reports
continue to provide this second source of information.
3. In June 2009, a relative who wishes to remain anonymous has
provided data concerning
eleven ancestors of Wiley
Preston Guinn.
4. Following up on data from Source #3, I went back to
Genforum.com and found a
Marken Frazier Gerhardt who claims descent from Charles
and (now a 12th ancestor)
Elizabeth Husbands Guinn through their
oldest daughter Mary Jane Guinn who married Charles Frazier.
5.
Jeff
Eaton contacted us in Feb 2012 regarding the
descendancy
of his wife from Wiley Preston Guinn.

[Mary Lee Note:
At
some point in the marriage of Wiley Preston Guinn and Aletha
(Hough) Guinn, Aletha deserted her husband and their
children. Wiley remarried later and raised his children and
ended up in Texas, where he died. He is buried in the Valley

to Aletha Hough or where/when she died. Wiley Preston
Guinn's second wife's last name was KELLEY. Not much info on
her is known yet.]

At
first glance, one
would think that the marriage record below refers to
the couple on the right, above. And that thought
would be correct. However, closer scrutiny would
uncover the given name of the surety for that marriage
as that of Hough--which happens to be the maiden name
of the OTHER Wiley's wife! How's that?

CYPRESS - Evelyn L. Irwin,
95, died July 22, 2009.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in
Windwood Presbyterian Church. Graveside services will
be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery in
Amarillo with the Rev. Charlie Jones, her longtime
former pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by
Kingwood Funeral Home.
Evelyn L. Irwin, beloved mother to four sons,
grandmother to seven grandchildren and
great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren, was
born April 16, 1914, in Clarendon, where she met and
married her husband of 68 years, Kirven S. Irwin.
She displayed the "can-do," "make-do" or "do-without"
spirit that came from weathering two World Wars and
surviving the Great Depression. By her diligence, she
made the hard dirt and adverse growing conditions of
the Texas Panhandle produce fruits, vegetables and
flowers. Her pear preserves were a treat, and her
fried chicken can never be duplicated. But her real
artistry was with needle and thread. She could sew
anything she could see or imagine, from outfitting
herself and her children, to stitching Barbie clothes,
making canvas fishing floater rigs and even fashioning
her eldest granddaughter's wedding dress. She loved to
catch fish and was good at it. She's probably baiting
a hook with her husband right now.
The family would like to express deep appreciation for
the loving care given by the staff at Ainsley Courte
and devoted care by the staff and nurses at The
Heritage in Tomball.
She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.
They were longtime members of Second Baptist Church of
Amarillo.
Her parents, Charlie and Avie Rilla Jones; her
husband; a son, Mitchell; and a grandson, Alan,
preceded her in death.
Survivors include three sons, Vern and wife Betty and
Jerry and wife Kathy, all of Houston, and Terry and
wife Jo Helen of New Orleans. Evelyn was from a large
family of 12 children, with only her sister, Clarice
Hall, of Clarendon surviving.

We
started
this census search in 1860 and found Wiley--and possibly
his mother (see below). 1850 is our second stop. I am
hoping and expecting to find Wiley living with his
parents. I'm also hoping and expecting to find some older
siblings. For example, this James could be an older
brother of Wiley.

But where
are Wiley and his parents? He reports in 1860
that he was born in AL, so where were they when the 1850
census came? I can't find them anywhere--in AL or not.

Good sleuthing, Mary! If it is true that she is Wiley's
mother, she was about 41 when Wiley was born, meaning he
was likely one of her youngest children if not the
youngest. So Wiley likely has older siblings for whom we
should watch. I think the 1850 census of this same
town should reveal something.

Several
factors
give
us
reason to believe this is the former Nannie Guinn: she has
the same first name; she's 25, and our Nannie was age 15
ten years ago; she's living two doors down from our
Nannie's parents; and, while Alfred's POB and that of his
parents are all out of kilter, she lists KY as her mom's
POB as does our Nannie.

Ancestry.com has
mistranscribed her name as "Mannie"; however, on close
inspection at 200%, I'm certain it's "Nannie". Now I'm
further convinced than I was while viewing the 1910 census
that this is our Nannie because (1) she finally has given
a census report to someone who has recorded the POB of her
and her parents accurately--see also the 1910 census
above; and (2) her middle initial is listed--B--and our
Nannie's middle name is Bell.

Some Good Communication
From: Shortilee918ataoldotcom

Subject: Re: Possible
Relative, Choctaw, AL.----- GUINN
Hi!
Thanks for answering my email so fast.
It was my Grandmother, Rose Etta
(GUINN) Irwin, who was the Guinn connection in my family, to
Wiley P. Guinn. My grandmother's father (Alfred Henry Guinn) was
Wiley P. Guinn's son.
I appreciate the offer to add my info
to your website. Thank you so very much. I'll get all my info
together and send it to you.
I also have a family photo of Alfred
Henry Guinn's wife and children, if you have a place to post it.
(It's already on a website that pertains to my grandmother's
Guinn-Farley connection--Farley's were from Kentucky.)
Maybe the photo might help in "seeing"
similar characteristics of these GUINNs in comparison to others.
(It was Alfred Henry Guinn, my g-grandfather, who married a
Farley.)
My goodness, this genealogy can get
confusing...haha.
I'll send the info on my Guinns
asap...and again, thanks so much!
God Bless~~~~Mary Lee

a message dated 10/11/2008, JMcDGwin@zianet.com writes:
Hello, Mary Lee--thanks for writing--good to meet you!
I've seen your father's name many times over the years
and often wondered just how he and I are related.
I still have no idea.
But I do have a theory, and I'm fairly convinced it's at
least partially true.
I'm fully convinced that my ggggg-grandparents were
Richard Gwin and Sarah Chesley, both of whom were allegedly
born, raised, and married near Jamestown, VA. I believe that
they had at least one son, Isham/Isom, whom we know married
Mary Canterbury near Blacksburg, VA, and moved into what is
now eastern TN where they raised ten kids. Isham was a Baptist
preacher who grew to hate slavery, so when Indiana entered the
Union as a free state, he free his slaves, sold his farm, and
moved most of his family to southern Indiana. But at least two
of their sons, John and William, moved to Alabama (in
disagreement with their father), and raised their families
there. I descend from John.
Here's the theory, then: Richard had other brothers--and
sons--some of whom moved west through what is now WV and OH
and into central Indiana. Most of these other IN Gwins descend
from a man named Holmes/Homes Gwin whom we believe to be
related to Richard. But others of these VA relatives of
Richard moved south through the Carolinas and GA and into AL
that way. I think your Wiley could easily have descended from
some of them. The names Chesley Gwin and Isom Gwin surface in
several of these families; this is our greatest clue and the
theory's source.
I'd love to build a page for your family and put it in my
"As-of-yet-unrelated Gwins" site, if you're of such a mind. If
you haven't seen it yet, it's at www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/gwinsAsOfYetUnrelated.htm
.
These pages often (perhaps weekly) result in others
contacting us--just as you did tonight--with additional
information about the various published lines. The page is on
my site, so I act as the webmaster, but the page will be
partially yours as well, and I'll make additions, revisions,
and/or deletions at your direction. As others send in things,
the page will melt together as have so many others in the
past.
Yours would start off similar to this mockup of what
you've sent so far:

Hi!
The page looks great! I appreciate your
doing it, so much!
There are some corrections,
though, since I got to see the page itself...minor, I suppose,
but I'll let you be the judge of that.
ROSE ETTA (GUINN) IRWIN, daughter
of Alfred Henry Guinn and Martha Bell (Farley) Guinn, was my
Dad's mother, and not my Mom's. Rose Etta Guinn-Irwin had 5
children: a daughter who died at 5-months old; 2 sons who died
in the late 1990's; a daughter who is still living and is 94;
and a son, (my Dad), who is 86 now.
Also, I found the birth
dates/death dates, this morning, for some of Alfred Henry
Guinn's children, if you think that would be helpful and where
some are buried. Let me know. [My 94-year-old aunt provided me
with this info.]
I'll probably just send you what I now
have, per my conversation with my aunt this morning, and you can
decide whether it should be included, okay? I'm relatively "new"
to what details to include. So sorry for the lack of experience
in compiling info...I'm working on it, though.
Have a great day and be blessed~~~~Mary

Hi again....
Just in case you are interested, I wanted to alert you that I just
found out that *allegedly* there exists a will for James
FITZGERALD, AKA: James Fitz GERALD.
With info from Phil Crowther, I was able alert a descendant who
has researched the FITZGERALDS about Jester COCKE and his daughter
Mary Ann who married James FITZGERALD - whose daughter Mary Ann
Fitzgerald GUINN is the mother of Wiley Preston GUINN.
Anyway, due to the paucity of information about Jester COCKE, his
daughter Mary Ann Cocke FITZGERALD and her daughter Mary Ann
Fitzgerald GUINN -- I thought that the discovery of a will for
James FITZGERALD *might* be of interest to you.
HOPEFULLY, the poster will email a copy of it to Phil, so that the
contents can be posted online.
TAKE CARE!!!

Maranda,
Thank you very much for your help. I'm looking forward to
investigating the Cocke family and the connection to the
Fitzgerald family. I do have a copy of James Fitzgerald's (Fitz
Gerald)will found in Madison Co., Al.
Sincerely, Marken Gerhardt
Hello, Marken!
Hello, Marken!
I had NO idea that there was a will available for James Fitzgerald
AKA James Fitz Gerald.
Is it posted anywhere online?
Phil Crowther has an extensive website about his ancestor, Charles
COCKE -- who many people presume was the brother of Jester COCKE.
Here are 2 pages on his website where the surname FITZGERALD is
mentioned:
http://home.southwind.net/~crowther/Cocke/Jester.htm
http://home.southwind.net/~crowther/Cocke/_StateAR.htm
Phil has also brought together all the information about Jester
COCKE, the father-in-law of James Fitz Gerald -- there are quite a
few pages on his website devoted to *the* Jesters, PLURAL - as
there seem to be (at least) 5 different individuals by this name.
ONE of them is the father of Mary Ann who married James
FITZGERALD.
Can you email a copy of the will to Phil? OR... can you transcribe
it in a posting on genforum?
Thanks so much, Marken!
