Rodney W. "Mike" Danhauer Family Notes . |
DISCLAIMER: VISITORS TO THIS PAGE need to know that I am not related to the Danhauers and that this page is an attempt to provide my friend Mike Danhauer with a place to collect his own oral family history as well as information from the genealogical collections of others who have already done much/most of the legwork. NOTHING on this page IS TO BE CONSIDERED DOCUMENTED OR PROVEN other than the census reports and by what is quoted here as being presented by him or by others.John M. Gwin
Session 1--Today, 12 May 2001, my dear friend Mike Danhauer and I sat down together with my notebook and pen and lots of his memories, and I jotted down his thoughts on his family as he worked his way back through his--their--history. Following is my edited-for-readability transcription of those notes.
Session 2--Mike stopped by for a few minutes on 9 Jul 2001, and he recalled more information and anecdotes. Mike and Olivia will be traveling to a reunion of the remaining members of his family later this month, so sometime in August we should be updating this even further.
Session 3--Saturday, 29 Mar 2003, we celebrated Mike's 80th birthday at church, and I got to take several notes on his children's and other family members' memories of his/their past.
Session 4--This is not a meeting with Mike but a report of some research I have been doing on the internet. Recently I entered the keywords "Danhauer", "Lyndon, Kansas," and "Osage County" into a search engine and found several hits, not the least of which was a notice of a Civil War diary of a David H. Danhauer of Lyndon, Osage County, Kansas! I emailed the owner who agreed to send me a copy of its transcription, which copy arrived 5 Apr 2003. How could this be any other than one of Mike's direct ancestors?Another of the hits was of a book, A Family History Gilliland-Danhauer of Lyndon, Osage County, Kansas by Nadine Howard Gilliland, the only known copy of which is located in the private Garst Museum of Greenville, Darke County, Ohio, and the surnames of which included "Carpenter, Danhauer, Gilliland, Hall, Hoblit, Mills, Roberds, and Woodhall." A quick phone call to the museum (937-548-5250--spoke with Ms. Virginia Housman) resulted in disappointment: non-family members are not allowed to use the facility for research! For a price, however, one may hire the museum's volunteer docent to do the desired research. One should send a letter to Ms. Phyllis Crick, Garst Museum, 205 N. Broadway, Greenville, OH, 45331-2222, with the specific information requested. Research fees include ten dollars per hour plus fifteen cents per copy and postage.
Ms. Housman also referred me to the Greenville Public Library to see if another copy of the book might be there: 520 Sycamore Street, Greenville, OH 454331-1438 -- (937) 548-3195.
Since then I have received e.mails from two other Danhauer descendents, each of whom has a copy of the above-mentioned book, A Family History Gilliland-Danhauer of Lyndon, Osage County, Kansas! We're now in the process of updating some of the data we've been missing. Thanks, Susan
He and my mom, the former Beulah Durbin, were from the town of Lyndon, KS [JMGNote: Lyndon is the county seat of Osage Co. about 25 miles due south of Topeka.] I imagine they were born and raised there, and maybe even lived there for a while after they were married. The reason I say that is that I know all of their first three children were born in KS, though perhaps not in Lyndon. My guess is they were probably married in late 1908 or early 1909, because their first child, my oldest brother Melvin, was born in Oct 1909. Both sets of my grandparents, the Danhauers and the Durbins, were from Lyndon, but I don't know if they moved there from somewhere else or not.
I don't remember any
of my four grandparents, nor do I know either of my
grandmothers' maiden names. But I do recall my older
siblings telling me a little about them. Grandpa
Durbin died early, they told me, and Grandma Durbin
remarried a Mr. Oyler/Oiler. She was a warm and
loving person, and everyone had good things to say about
her. I remember nothing about Grandpa Danhauer,
but Grandma Danhauer did come to visit us once in
Colorado Springs. I don't know if I'm remembering her
myself or just recalling what others have said, but she seemed
to be a more stern person--cold and distant.
I'm the seventh of eight children who survived birth:
2. Thelma Mae (or May) Danhauer, called "Mae" (May?), b. May 1911 in KS; deceased;
3. Irma (Erma?) Allene Danhauer, called "Ninee" (say NIGH-knee) first by her husband, and the name stuck--usually she goes by Allene, though; b. 28 Dec 1912 in KS; still lives in Colorado Springs, ten years and four months older than I;
4. [I speculate that since the children were about two years apart, a baby was probably miscarried here--in or about 1915, but I don't know that for sure.];
5. Marvin Smith Danhauer, b. Sep 1917 in Lamar, CO; lived in Salida, CO, until his death in 2002;
6. Virgil Danhauer, b. Nov 1918 in La Junta, CO; d. by drowning summer of 1937, age 18 (nine months later our mother was killed in an automobile accident in Mar 1938);
7. Roberta Danhauer, b. 24 Apr 1921 in La Junta, CO; deceased;
8. Rodney Woodall Danhauer, Jr., b. 4 Apr 1923 in La Junta, CO; called "Junior" for years until nicknamed "Mike" by one of the brothers--either Melvin or Marvin--since at age twelve he was "getting too old to be called 'Junior'"; m2. to Olivia; lives with her in Las Cruces, NM, where he retired as Physical Plant Foreman at NMSU in the 1980's; they are members of and have served in many capacities at the First Evangelical Free Church of Las Cruces, she in particular as deaconess, he in particular as trustee, building committee foreman, and (currently and for several years) deacon board member;
9. Marilyn Danhauer, b. Nov 1925 in La Junta, CO; m. David Oxley; both still live in the Los Angeles, CA, area;
When I was eight, in 1930, we moved west into the mountains. Dad was out of work, and a man who owned three ponds (stocked with trout for sale to restaurants) hired him as caretaker. Years later Marvin told me that he thought the man and Dad were bootlegging whiskey, and perhaps the man had been thrown into jail.
The family only stayed there six months, and in late 1930 we moved about three miles away to a little house that was back about a mile and a half from the road. The landlord owned four horses, and we were to provide upkeep for the place and the animals. That fall, our family harvested potatos we had planted earlier at the pond, and we lived that winter on wild game and the potatoes we'd stored in the spud cellar. But there was no hay, and through the winter the horses grew skinnier as they ate the dried grass from the building's thatched roof.
In the Spring of 1931 a big snow came, and we were snowed in for a month. Finally Dad was able to walk wearing snowshoes to the road where he borrowed a neighbor's old gray mare and rode into town for flour and other groceries. On the return trip, the big sack of flour rode behind the saddle across the mare's rump. Since nothing in those hard times was ever thrown away, Mom sifted that flour over and over again. But for months afterward, all of us spat out little short, coarse, gray, horsehairs from just about every piece of bread we ate! But we never went hungry, to my recollection.
From 1930 to about 1937, we lived in that same area-- about a seven-mile stretch of Route 24 between Divide, CO, and Woodland Park. We lived several different places, but we always went to school in Woodland Park. The Woodland Park School had all twelve grades on one campus, though there were several different buildings.
In the summers, I remember my mother telling Virgil and me to go and get a couple of cottontails for supper, or maybe three if there were more going to be there for dinner. We had a little .22 rifle, and we'd always try to shoot them in the head--usually did, too--so as to make cutting and eating the meat easier. Sometimes the rabbit would spook and run before we could get a shot off, but we learned that if we gave a little whistle, it would stop and sit up just long enought for us to get it. Of course, in the winter when we were in school, we couldn't get out to get a cottontail except on weekends, so we usually had venison and occasionally, elk.
In the spring of each year, we'd help the landlords bring in their cattle and calves. We never got any beef for helping, though.
For the promise of fifty cents a day, I worked for my older brother Melvin on his farm for two summers. Of course, I never would see a cent of the money until the crops came in three months later. It was 1936 and 1937, and he was raising head lettuce. (I remember it was 1937, because I was there when we got word that Virgil had drowned that second summer.) Melvin had me plowing with a four-horse team and a gangplow, and one of those horses had a reputation as an outlaw. He had run wild in the Wyoming plains for the first five years of his life, and when he was finally caught, they tried to break him to be a saddle horse but couldn't. So he was trained as a work horse. He wouldn't let anyone in his stall--my brother had to harness him from the next stall, reaching over the side rails. But that horse never was anything other than docile to me, even when I'd have to reach down near his feet to hitch him to the plow. Maybe it was because I was just a kid, but I guess he trusted me. Man, if Mother had known I was working with that famous old horse, she'd never've let me go!
At the end of the summer, when I got paid that $45, I'd give it right to Mom and she'd buy us clothes for school that fall. And she also used some of it to buy us a used clothes washing maching, one with a crank you would turn to operate the agitator. Sure beat that old washboard and tub she'd used all her life! Seems like she used some of it to pay on the charge account at the grocery store, too. You know, it never occurred to me to think that any of that money was mine--it was all just used for the family, and everyone understood that.
And there we quit again to go our various and sundry directions. I'm going to print up copies of this for Mike and Olivia to take to their reunion so others can comment.

On Sep 04, 2011 Jerry Hoffman added the following data to the memorials he created on Findagrave.com for Hannah Danhauer Boyd and Phillip Y. Boyd |
|
Hannah
was the first of eight children born to Elias Danhauer
(1782-1842) who emigrated from Germany in 1803. Her
mother was Elizabeth Cummins (1795-1840) from
Pennsylvania. Her parents were married in PA but
relocated immediately and later both died in Muskingum
Co, Ohio. Hannah married Phillip Y Boyd in Muskingum
County, Ohio, and together raised nine children.
Hannah's burial is with her husband Phillip in the old
section (east) of the
cemetery. Her stone was broken from base and flat
on ground covered by dirt. Phillip's stone was near edge
of bushes about 20 feet south. The smaller standing
stones mark the graves of their last children in Clay
County who died young.
|
A county history said Phillip was born in New Jersey, but it might be innacurate since his parents were married in Hagerstown, MD, at the edge of the frontier. Phillip's father was Robert Boyd who was born 1757 in transit on the Atlantic Ocean and served as a teamster for six months during the Revolution. He married Eve Young (widow of Oliver Silverthorn and mother of Phillip Y. Boyd) in 1790. Robert died in 1853 in Muskingum County, Ohio. Phillip moved from Muskingum County, Ohio, with his family to Clay County, Indiana about 1851 and became a successful land owner/farmer. Phillip, a blacksmith by trade and supposedly of Irish descent, married Hannah Danhauer in 1833 in Muskingum Co, Ohio. Phillip's gravestone in Wesley Chapel is in the old section (far east) of the cemetery next to bushes and broken off from its base and also broken in half. It had been obscured by dirt, vegetation and overhanging sassafras trees but the inscriptions were clear and it photographed well. Hannah's stone, also broken from the base, was about 30 feet north of Phillip's imbedded in the ground |

I had just noticed that you didn't have any information listed for Elias Danhauer's son Samuel and his wife Catherine France, so I thought I would offer the information that I have. Also, I was wondering if anyone out there has pictures of the Danhauer's from generations past. If so, I would love to add them to my file. I have pictures back to my great-great-grandfather Delbert Elza Danhauer (1874-1937) that I would love to share if anyone is interested. "I have in my possession a journal of David H. Danhauer of Osage County, Lyndon, Kansas. He was married to Susan F. Groves. Anyone who has David as an ancestor please contact me at dorislg@cox.net with his birth date and place of birth and I will mail it to you. It is a very interesting journal of his days in the Civil War."
Doris, thank you for posting this information. I'm writing for a dear friend, Mr. Rodney Woodall "Mike" Danhauer, Jr. We attend the same church in Las Cruces, NM, where today we celebrated his 80th birthday with a family reunion at the church.
I've been interested in my own genealogy for several years, and now I'm helping Mike search for his roots. Today at the party I got interested again in helping Mike as I interviewed several of his family members. Then tonight I read your post (copied above) and decided you must indeed have one of the keys to Mike's history.
I've discovered on the internet that the Danhauer name is fairly rare, quite rare indeed in Kansas, and almost non-existent when searching for it in relation to Lyndon, the county seat of Osage Co., Kansas! News of this journal gives me hope that your David and Susan are my friend's great-grandparents if not his grandparents.
I realize your post is almost a year old, but if you still have the journal, I entreat you on Mike's behalf to allow us to pay you to make us a photocopy of the document. I can send you money by PayPal, personal check, money order, or however you'd prefer it--assuming, of course, that you still have it and are willing to copy it for us.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
In Jesus,
John

I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can do anything more.
Not right now, I guess, unless you can think of something else you think would look good on his page. The whole idea is to put as much out there as we can, hoping (1) that someone else can use it to fill in their blanks and (2) that someone else who has info that we don't can write to us and help fill in OUR blanks--just like you did! :-)
Ok, and I'll be John--thanks again!
Best to you, Leslie!
In Jesus,
John

Subject: Danhauer familyI think what you have done for Mr. Danhauer is cool. . .I can’t help but think there might be some connection between him and the Danhauer family currently here in Muskingum Co. [OH]
One of those ladies, an Amelia Danhauer, is my grand aunt by marriage ? she married my grandfather's brother Arthur Roscoe Shumate. Her parents are Wm. Julius Danhauer and Lenora Trout Danhauer. Her grandparents are Ernest Conrad Danhauer and Augusta Sophia Amelia Bohnstedt Danhauer. Ernest was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, about 1830. It appears that he and Augusta were married in Muskingum Co., though she was also born in Germany.
Just an FYI. . . . .

They had a son named named David H. Danhauer (1849-1931), who had a son Delbert Elza Danhauer (1874-1937), who had a daughter Margaret Marcella Danhauer (1915-2004), who was my great grandmother. Margaret Marcella (Danhauer) Berck (1915-2004) just died a few years past. Anyways, I have a file on ancestry.com that lists all of the information I have compiled so far on my family, including the Danhauer family. If your friend is interested in viewing this, let me know, and I can add his e-mail address as a guest. This will allow him to view all of the information I have and also add anything that I am missing, if he wants. I also have a copy of Samuel Danhauer's (1819-1891) son David H. Danhauer's (1849-1931) obituary from the newspaper if anyone is interested. Sincerely, Amanda |
