Source A: My cousin Barbara Ward inherited a family photo album containing photos from approximately the 1840's through the 1870's or so.  In its index was the handwritten name George Clothier.  We think the photo Barbara found on the corresponding page is a match, as shown here.  Why his name and picture were included in the album is still something of a mystery.  At first we speculated that he may have married a Gwin or a Wilson, but we had no idea who.  (Now we know he didn't marry until he got to Galveston.) So perhaps he was included only because he was a family friend, maybe because he was a fellow veteran or perhaps a fellow church member.

Source B: Later, we discovered a listing for a Pvt. G. E. Clothier which appears in Anna Gayle Fry's book, Memories of Old Cahaba, on page 109 in the Roster of the "Cahaba Rifles", Company F, Fifth Alabama Regiment, C.S. A., as follows: "enlisted 10 Apr. 1861 at Cahaba by Capt. C. C. Pegues for one year; wounded in battle 1 Jul 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA; disabled for further service."  This lent credence to the "fellow veteran" theory above.

Source C: A search of the 1880 census revealed only one (of 22 persons of this name) who was b. in AL or in AL in 1880:

Name: George CLOTHIER
Age: 38
Estimated birth year: <1842>
Birthplace: Alabama
Occupation: Book Keeper
Relation: Self
Home in 1880: Galveston, Galveston, Texas
Marital status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Head of household: George CLOTHIER
Father's birthplace: VA
Mother's birthplace: SC
This told us much new information about George Clothier but still didn't give us a good explanation as to why he was included in the book.

Source D: I located and spoke by telephone with Dr. Grant M. Clothier of Prairie Village, Kansas.  [Dr. Clothier, a six-year Navy veteran of WW2 and following, enjoyed a career in education that has spanned five decades in Kansas and Missouri, culminating with his being named director and president, respectively, of two different educational organizations.  Entering his eightieth year, he still serves as co-editor of The Clothier Chronicles, a family newsletter published twice a year.]  Dr. Clothier graciously sent me the following items and his permission to publish them here--thank you, Sir!  :-)

1. Letter from George E. Clothier to the Editor of an unknown and undated newspaper(emphasis mine):

THE VETERAN AND MERCURIUS.

Wherein the Youthful Reunion
Orator's Niche Is Pointed Out

TO THE EDITOR:
The writer enlisted as a Confederate soldier in the spring of '61; was mustered in as a private soldier at Pensacola, Fla., by General Bragg; was a member of the Cahaba rifles, Fifth Alabama regiment; enrolled at the same time and with Senator John T. Morgan and has now in my possession a letter from Senator Morgan certifying to my faithfulness as a soldier.  I was shot down at Malvern Hill, Va.; lay in the hospital at Richmond three months; nursed back almost from death to life by my mother; carried home to Alabama on a litter. It was eight months from the time I was shot to the time I could first touch my left foot to the ground.  This in brief is our war record.  No better and perhaps not as good as thousands of my comrades. I have little taste for display or buncombe.  My conviction is that the church of Jesus Christ is the biggest thing on earth and covers all the demands in my nature as an organization and is supreme, so much so to me, that others, however worthy, count for little.  This is my peculiarity--that chills the enthusiasm in me which I do not condemn in others.  I was a soldier when not to be was a disgrace if able to bear arms.  It was a time when nothing else was expected of a man, for it was even difficult to hold some of the women back.  If the same demand was upon us today that was in my day we can more than duplicate the prowess of the old Confederate soldier in our sons and our daughters.  My recollection of the youth of my day leads me to believe they are out classed in our youth of today.  We have not retrograded in our progeny, but have advanced all along the line.  This is the simple truth.
Why, look at the conditions of today.  See how the old veteran is honored and cared for.  Is it not because of the reverence and love of his sons and daughters?  Surely they are the legislators and voters that make provision for the old veteran. Yes, give the old fellow a good time; cheer him in his few remaining years and make his life as pleasant as possible.  This were double honor, not only to the old soldier, but to your filial love.  Mercurius, what about him?  Why he's the son of a veteran, but he is different from the ordinary son because he has sprouted wings. The old veteran just dotes on him. He is in demand  at all of the reunions.  Mercurious is the orator, poet, painter all combined.  He tells the old veterans how he did it and thrills them with the account of his brave exploits.  He carries the old soldiers back to the ensanguined field where he hears the roar of cannon and cracking of rifles. He opens before his mind the opposing columns and, like a moving picture, displays the glory of a raging conflict.  This is the battle where the old veteran wins, and the rebel yell makes the echoes that die out while embracing the eloquent Mercurius. Well, thank the Lord for the old veteran and for Mercurius; but build the platform strong, for it must stand a strain--a strain of eloquence, a strain of responding enthusiasm.  Even bronze must have a foundation.
Let these occasions with their memories come and go, and let the old soldiers meet from time to time--at every meet the roll is lessened; some old soldier passed over the river to rest under the shade of the trees.  Let Mercurius get his inspiration from these gray-headed fathers of Mars, and may they drink the eloquence as new wine until their spirits are renewed and refreshed and the old yell of victory be heard all over the land.

Geo. E. Clothier.

Subject: George English Clothier

I was just cruising on your web page and found the picture of George English Clothier.  I saw you were trying to figure out his links to the Gwins, so I jumped onto Ancestry.com and found quite a bit of data:

George's dob is July 1842.

In 1850 he was living with both of his parents in Monroe Co., Al.  His father George was age 36 and born in Virginia.  His mother is listed as Sarah M. age 34 born in SC.  This census lists an older sister--I think it says Virginia--who would have been born in 1840 in Al.  It lists the other children as George E., Sarah E., Mary B., and John, who was 11 mo old on Nov 29, 1850.

In 1860 he was living in Athens, Dallas Co., Alabama, with his mother Sarah, age 44, born in SC, and with his siblings Sarah E. Clothier age 15, Mary B. Clothier age 13, and John Clothier age 10.

The Rest of the Story?

[JMG Note: Thank you so much, Cousin Mike, for sending all these good data.  Seeing that George lived in Athens in 1860 has triggered a thought: this may be the connection as to why his picture is in Martha's photo album.  So I'll step in here and insert the following copied from my web page for our first cousin thrice removed, Martha R. Gwin Holley, and piece together in this note what may be "the rest of the story."

Martha grew up in Athens, too, and likely went to school with this George Clothier, as he was less than a year older than she. Perhaps they were only good friends--or perhaps she was romantically attracted to him (and perhaps he to her!). And yet when things were warming up for war in September 1860, she, then 17, opted for the older man--twice her age--Madison "Matt" Holley, 33.

Some seven months later on 10 Apr 1861, while Martha was starting her second trimester with daughter Minnie, George, not yet 19, enlisted in the Cahaba Rifles, went off to war, and, on or about his 20th birthday in July 1862, received a disabling wound while with General R. E. Lee (whose picture is also in Martha's album) at the Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia. His mother, Sarah Clothier, traveled to Richmond where he lay in the hospital for three months, nursed him back to health, and brought him back by train to Athens on a litter where, about the following March (1863) he was able to step out of bed for the first time since being shot. (All this from George's letter, above.)

Perhaps George's siblings--Sarah, Mary, and John, then 17, 15, and 12, respectively--even stayed with Matt and Martha while their mother was in Richmond with George. (Martha's baby, Minnie, would have been 10 months old, and Martha could have used the help of the Clothier kids in taking care of the baby.)   We don't know when she received the photo of George and placed it into her album, but it likely carried many fond memories for her of school chum, friend, and local hero.

Martha's page is located at http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/gwinisommarybwilson.htm#marthaRosannaGwinHolleyLester]
5.2--Martha Rosanna "Mattie" Gwin, b. 5 Apr 1843 (but gravestone says 1844) in Dallas Co.; d. 15 Sep 1923 (but gravestone says 14 Sep) at age 80 of heart failure in Perry Co., AL, where she had lived 14 years (according to death certificate); bd.16 Sep 1923 by J. A. Bice at Mars Hill Cem. near Marion, Perry Co., AL; lived and died at Perry Ridge community, Hamburg, AL, near Marion; an uncle was a Dr. [must be Isham Griffin] Wilson of Demopolis. [John M. Gwin Note: My double-fourth cousin Barbara Ward, who descends from Martha and second husband Bryant, once thought that Martha was adopted. Thanks to some of Barbara's excellent sleuthing, however, we're all now certain that Martha is the natural daughter of Isom and Mary.]

m1. 7 Sep 1860 in Athens, AL, [John M. Gwin Note: This is the Town of Athens in Dallas Co. which existed for only a short period and then died.] for 12+ years to Madison "Matt" Holley (b. 7 Aug 1827, d. 6 Dec. 1872, in Marion, Perry Co., AL; bd. Mars Hill Cem. near Marion, Perry Co., AL. (gravestone says: "Lewis Independent Cavalry, from 1860 to 1865, CSA, 1833-1873"); s/o Burrell Holley (b. 15 Mar 1797) and Frances Miller; Matt's brothers were Will Holley and Monroe Holley; Matt's sister was Martha Holley who m. a Mr. Steadman [John M. Gwin Note: Was this a relative of the Rev. John Steadman whom Martha's mother, Mary B. Wilson Gwin, above, married?  Indeed, was he the same man?]); Barbara Ward sent the following info on the ten children; there were six children by Matt Holley, (only three--Minnie, Carlos, and Clarence--survived to the 1880 census) and four by B. B. Lester;

6.1--Minnie Moore Holley, b. 3 Sep 1861 (but age 17 in the 1880 census); d. in childbirth 21 Oct. 1883; bd. unk.; m. 4 Jan 1883 for nine months to Thomas Judson Lester (b. 1859; b/o Bryant Brown Lester; [There's an interesting note here: Minnie's mother Martha Rosanna Gwin Holley Lester is therefore the sister-in-law AND mother-in-law to Thomas J. Lester, and Tom Lester's brother Bryant is also his father-in-law!  But this is the really cute one:  Minnie and Bryant are stepdaughter and stepfather, which makes Thomas Minnie's step-uncle, and since she is married to him, that makes her her own step-aunt! :-)]
In 1870, George, Mary, Sarah and John were still living with their mother in Orrville, Dallas Co., AL, (seven miles due east of Athens) along with their servant Jacob.

In 1873 he was married somewhere (probably Galveston) in Texas to Mary Eliza Campbell, born abt 1855 in TX. Her parents were from NC.

By 1880 George and Mary were in Galveston, TX.  They had a daughter, Estelle P. Clothier, who was born in Sept. 1879.  His mother, his siblings Sarah, Mary, and John, and the servant Jacob, were all still living with him in Texas in the 1880 census.

Jacob's last name is listed as Clothier as well, by the way.  He was born in SC in 1810 and was black, so I assume he was a former slave from Sarah's childhood home.

By 1900 George and Mary were in Ellis Co., TX, and had several more children.  George's dob is listed as July 1842; Mary's is listed as Oct 1853.  Their children are listed as:

Stella - Aug. 1879 (I assume this is Estelle)
George - July 1882
Julia (I think) - Oct 1884
Deborah - April 1887 (I think)
Robert - May 1889
Maude - Aug 1891

George's wife Mary E. Campbell is probably the daughter of Andrew M. Campbell, born in NC 1814 per the 1870 census of Galveston, TX. Others in the Andrew Campbell household are his wife, Victoria, b. 1842 in Tennesse, Robert M., who appears to Mary's twin brother--both were born 1853 in Texas, and Alice, b. 1869 in Texas.  There are also in the home an Alice E. Williams, b. 1816 in Texas, a Margaret Hawe, b. 1834 in NC,, and a William P. Hill, born 1870 in Texas.  There is a Hill family right next to the Campbells in the Census.

Andrew M. Campbell is Andrew Monroe Campbell, born 1810 in Mecklenburg Co., (Charlotte) NC.  His first wife was Mary Jane Neely, who is probably the mother of George Clothier's wife Mary.  She was born in 1821 and died Apr 1864 in Weimer, Colorado Co., TX.  Andrew's second wife was Victoria Williams.  He married her in 3 Jan 1866 in Fayette Co., TX.

Following is one of the Ahnentafels of Andrew M. Campbell's ancestors from Ancestry.com ("WFT" could refer to "World Family Tree"--but I don't know what that would mean; it could also be an abbreviation for any of the following: with--or without--further thought; will fix this; won't find this; ):

Hope all is well with you and yours!
