QUESTION:   What proof do we have that William
Bramwell Wilson's middle name is "Bramwell"?

I cannot find the source of this information anywhere,
yet I'm sure we didn't just make it up!

Does anyone know?

Hi, Virginia Rowe Wilson was my 2nd Great Aunt. I've been through your pages on gwingenealogy.net many times. It's been very helpful.  We recently found the headstones for Lula Wilson Wyatt and her husband at Glenwood Cemetery in Beeville.  She was Virginia's and William Bramwell Wilson's daughter. The photos are at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=149176298
I'm convinced her sister (Jennie Wilson) is buried there, too, based on her death certificate, but have not found her headstone.  We're still trying to find where Virginia Rowe Wilson is buried.  Have you guys turned up anything else on her?

John,

I came across your page while doing some research on my Wyatt line.  I noticed you were missing the names on a couple of Jame's and Lula's children:  Willie Wilson Wyatt is the oldest, 1879-1899, then Gordon Guin Wyatt 1892-1895.  This information has come from work my mom was doing on www.familysearch.org.  I believe she has some sources attached to the names.  Hope that helps you out.  I wasn't aware of a child born after Rebel.  Guess I have something more to research now.

David McKinnon

Hello, David--thanks for writing--good to meet you, cousin!  I have changed this page to accommodate these two additions you have brought.  I did take the liberty of changing the spelling of Gordon's middle name from Guin to Gwin.  Gordon was no doubt named for the family of the two brothers, Isom and William Gwin, who married sisters (Mary B. Wilson and Roe C. J. Wilson, respectively), Gordon's grandaunts (see 24.01 and 24.04 at the top of this page in the yellow highlighted section).  Having the same name myself, I've found many similar misspellings in official documents and elsewhere.  Thanks again!
John M. Gwin

Gordon B. "Sonny" Wyatt

In the presence of his family, Gordon B. "Sonny" Wyatt, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, February 10, 2008. Sonny was born May 11, 1928 in San Angelo, Texas to James Manly and Daisy Chandler Wyatt.
After his family moved to Austin, he spent his childhood and teenage years there, graduating from Austin High School in 1947. Having been recruited by Jess Neeley, Sonny accepted an athletic scholarship to play football at Rice University. His football career was highlighted by starting at halfback during Rice's most successful 1949 season, concluding with a victory in the Cotton Bowl.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Rice Univesity in 1951. After declining several offers to play professional football, he served two years in the United States Army and then began a career in oilfield equipment sales in Houma, Louisiana.
After five years in Louisiana, Sonny moved the family to Houston. The Wyatts spent 14 years in Houston with Sonny changing his field to life insurance sales. During this time, he served in many capacities teaching Sunday School, coaching little league football and baseball (his labors of love), and finally serving as president of the Memorial High School Booster Club.
Moving from Houston in 1974, Sonny and Joan lived in Galveston twice from 1974 to 1982 and again from 1995 to 2006. They also spent ten years in Cleveland, Texas and three years in Levelland, Texas. Every move left fond memories and lifelong friendships that were cherished his entire life.
Sonny was an avid golfer, football fan and political pundit even to his last waking moments. He will be remembered and revered for his warmth, tenderness and his ability to naturally dole out mercy and grace in the likeness of his Lord.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Joan Portis Wyatt; son, Michael G. Wyatt and his wife Faye; son, Judson C. Wyatt and his wife Michele; five grandchildren, Adam, Chandler, Richard, Rachel, and Daniel; his sister, Leona LaRoe, and many cousins, nephews and nieces. A special and heartfelt thanks to "Pop's" last caregivers, Kathy Pellow and niece, Judy Conklin. Sonny will be sorely missed by all of his family and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in Marble Falls, Texas at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Flowers may be received at the church. Arrangements entrusted to Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Marble Falls, Texas, 830-693-4373

Joan Aleen Portis Wyatt

Obituary

Joan Portis Wyatt passed from this life to heaven on August 25, 2016. Joan was pre-deceased by her parents, Ross and Ermine Portis; her husband, Gordon (Sonny) Wyatt; and her sister, Wanda Portis Eisenlohr.  She is survived by son, Michael Gordon Wyatt and wife, Faye; son, Judson Chandler Wyatt and wife, Michele; and five grandchildren, Adam, Chandler, Richard, Rachel and Daniel.

Joan was born December 18, 1931 to Ross and Ermine Portis at the family home in Pasadena, Texas at the height of the Great Depression. At a young age her family moved to Houston in the area now known as Midtown. She came to know Jesus and was baptized in her early teens at First Baptist Church Houston setting the path and tone for the rest of her life.
She graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1949 and matriculated to Rice Institute where she met her future husband of 57 years, Sonny Wyatt.  They were married December 20, 1950 at which time she decided topostpone her formal education to become a homemaker, wife and mother.
In 1973 they moved to Galveston where Joan founded and led the Galveston Bay Area BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) group. In 1982 Joan and Sonny moved to Cleveland, Texas, where Joan re-started her studies and received a BS and an MS in Psychology from Sam Houston State. After receiving her license (LPC), she counseled individuals and consulted with the area Head Start program. In 1994 she accepted a position as a professor of psychology at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.

After several years they moved back to Galveston. During the next few years, Joan did a short stint in Ukraine with the Peace Corps. She also spent several weeks in the remnants of the USSR as part of an initiative of the Presbyterian Church to study the growth and change happening in the church (all denominations) in the former USSR after the end of the Cold War. She traveled all over the world, playing the Old Course at St. Andrews; walking the Great Wall of China; tracing Jesus steps in the Holy Land.

They moved to Marble Falls, Texas in 2006 and, after Sonny passed away in 2008, she took great pleasure both in being a grandmother to her five grandchildren and with all the friends made in her life adventure. Near the end she punctuated her writing with Philippians 1:21 "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain." To God be the Glory.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at The Lakeway Church located at 2203 Lakeway Blvd. in Lakeway, Texas on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. Flowers are welcome or, in lieu of flowers, a contribution to a charity or church of your choice. -

            Published in Austin American-Statesman Sept 4, 2016

Her parents are buried in South Park Cemetery; Pearland, Brazoria, Texas and there is a tombstone there inscribed with Joan's name, but we are uncertain of her burial site.

Mr. Gwin,  While trying to fill in my family tree, I came across this page: www.gwingenealogy.net/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Wilson/wilson.htm and thought we could exchange some information.  My grandfather's name was Ulric Wyatt Browne, Jr.  He was the son of Ulric Wyatt Browne and Sadie C. Wyatt.  I found a 1940 census record that shows his mother to be Mary S. Browne.   My uncle is Ulric Wyatt Browne III.  I'd be happy to provide you with any information you'd like, and would appreciate any sort of information or direction you could give me.   Thanks in advance!

26.06--Gordon Gwin Wyatt, b. 1892 in TX/AL/TX; d. 1895 at age 2 or 3; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.; DESCENDANTS NOT POSSIBLE

Subject: James Will Wyatt / Lula Wilson

John,
I came across your page while doing some research on my Wyatt line.  I noticed you were missing the names on a couple of Jame's and Lula's children:  Willie Wilson Wyatt is the oldest, 1879-1899, then Gordon Guin Wyatt, 1892-1895.

John M. Gwin

Hello John,
I hope you are doing well. I thought I would send you some info on what I have been researching lately.
I found a little more information on Willliam Bramwell Wilson, son of Nathaniel Burdine WILSON.
He married Virginia ROWE about 1857, possibly in Texas.

Their two children were:
1. Virginia "Jennie" WILSON - born 21 JAN 1859 -never married -died 22 AUG 1926 in Bee County, Texas.

2. Louisa "Lula" WILSON - born 21 JAN 1861 - married James William WYATT abt 1880 in Texas
died 08 JUN 1935 in Bee County, Texas

He was enumerated on the 1860 Wharton County, Texas census on page 250A.
His widow Virginia was enumerated on the 1870 Washington Co., TX census on page 087A.
She was also on the 1880 Lee Co., TX census in Dist. 91 p. 45; the stamped page no. is  023.

William Bramwell WILSON served in Co. L 8th Texas Cavalry (Terry's Texas Rangers).

The link below states that that he mustered out after serving 90 days, but I have my doubts; I think
he died during the war. I am now trying to find information on his death.

[John M Gwin Note:  THANK YOU, Mark, for your faithful sleuthing that has resulted in all the excellent information in this green box!  I have added more data from the census sources you mentioned, in addition to which I found and have also added some 1920 census data. With you, I am very confident if not absolutely sure that all of this data illuminates the lives of our William Bramwell Wilson, his wife Virginia Rowe, and many of their early descendents--with the possible exception of the 1860 census data and the Texas Rangers references. I am tentatively suggesting, at this point, that the W. B. Wilson listed there MIGHT be referring to a person other than our William Bramwell for the following reasons:

1.  The date of birth on his enlistment record is 1832, possibly making him five years younger than our W. B. Wilson;

2.

TX/MS/MS We know that Wm. and Lula had been married 20 years at this census, so where do the other 3 missing children go in the birth order? I think at least one and maybe two came in the seven-year stretch before Manly; the other--or maybe two--likely came in the five-year stretch between Sadie and Lee. Since the younger of these would be listed were he/she still alive, that's where at least one of the deceased would go, meaning that the other living child is older and probably married and living elsewhere.

John,
You are welcome...as I mentioned I called someone from this family several years ago in Oklahoma and explained the Rowe connection. Never heard back from them. C.B.

C. B., I HAVE FOUND VIRGINIA ROWE WILSON.  Now I know about whom you spoke.  She's the wife of William Bramwell Wilson, my g-g-granduncle.  I have a photo of Wm. B. Wilson on my website.  I only recently discovered his wife's name, and I haven't studied that material much yet.  I can't even tell you at the moment how I learned that her maiden name is Rowe.

Looking at my page, I recall knowing from James Bramwell Wilson's father's will (long before I knew Virginia was a Rowe) that they had two children (both girls) who, with Virginia, inherited James' portion, since he had died.  Only the younger sister survived to marry, and her second child was named James Manly Wyatt.

THANK you very much for getting in touch with me, and thanks again in advance for anything you share with me on your tree that I don't know yet!   :-)

Best to you and yours,

Hello,

My father-in-law (my wife adopted by her grandparents) was Manly M. Hi, Virginia Rowe Wilson was my 2nd Great Aunt. I've been thru your pages on gwingenealogy.net many times.
Thanks,
Jim Hill

Hi John,

I got your message on Ancestry. Nice to meet you also. Virginia’s sister (Sarah Elizabeth Rowe) was my great-great-grandmother. Their parents were Shadrack and Sarah Rowe of Brazoria County.  My Ancestry page for Virginia is at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/75233843/person/36332274723

Texas law says that there should have been a death certificate for Virginia, since she died after 1903. There is not, at least not that we can find. I’ve looked and looked for it. Found death certificates for both her daughters (Jennie and Lula). They were both buried in Beeville, TX.

Jennie Wilson never married and she and her mother lived together her entire life. They were in Mangum, OK in 1900, and in Runnels County, TX in 1910. Lula and family lived next door in both places. Then in 1920, Lula and family have Jennie living with them in Beeville, TX, but no sign of Virginia. Thus my conclusion that Virginia probably died between 1910 and 1920. But was it Runnels County, or Bee County, or somewhere else, I don’t know. We’re still looking.

I did put together some of the military history for her husband, William Bramwell Wilson. It is posted on my Ancestry page for him  http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/75233843/person/36332284921

There are several points in the document. I know on your Guinn family web pages there was a discussion where one of our mutual relatives put forward the idea that Bramwell was in the Terry’s Texas Rangers. At the time, this was dismissed because the ages were off. His enlistment record actually does not give a DOB. Instead the Terry’s Texas Rangers web page says “born in AL around 1832”. However, a 3rd party web page “about” someone is less than authoritative. Even enlistment records often had inaccuracies.

Here is the 1860 census showing the Wilson family.  I have cut and pasted it to line up with the family of John W. Veazey (my great-great-grandfather), who lived two houses away.

People have always read his occupation as “sawyer”.  What it actually says is “lawyer”.  Here is a comparison of the census taker’s handwriting.

[John M. Gwin Note: And look at the capital letters S, by contrast, in the name and occupation of the fifth person in the Wilson household, a "G. W. Spooner, Shoe Maker".]

In the second case, J. D. Whitten was a lawyer in Wharton County.  So was W. B. Wilson.

I’ve concluded also that W. B. Wilson joined Terry’s Texas Rangers  at Corinth, Miss., and then fought at Shiloh. Ninety days later his enlistment was up in June 1862, and he returned to Texas, where he seemingly vanishes. The theory and supporting docs are in the attached document.

But here to me is what the real mystery is: Why did W. B. Wilson join Terry’s Texas Rangers and go to Mississippi instead of joining his brother's-in-law company in Texas?  His brother-in-law and neighbor was my great-great-grandfather, Capt. John W. Veazey, who raised Company C, 35th Texas Cavalry (Brown’s) and was stationed in Wharton, Brazoria, and Galveston counties. Not only was J. W. Veazey his brother-in-law, but 5 of his other brothers-in-law (the Rowe brothers) were in J. W. Veazey’s company, as well as W. B. Wilson’s own brother (Isham G. Wilson).  Isham’s tombstone states that he served in the 35th Texas Cavalry (Brown’s).  And I found his military records in the National Archives.  I’ve attached them as well. I also have all the records for the Rowe brothers. They were together throughout the war.

Family members strove to serve in the same units as their brothers, fathers, sons, etc.  And so it seems really strange to me that W. B. Wilson joined a different unit. It is quite possible that he joined the 35th Cav after returning to Texas in the summer of 1862. But I have found no record of it.

Anyway, sorry for the sidetrack, what I’m actually trying to find out is if there’s been any word on what happened to Virginia beyond what is on the Gwin web pages?

Thanks for your help,
jim

Here’s more confirmation of W. B. Wilson being an Attorney in Wharton County, TX. I was looking for someone else in the microfilmed Probate records and ran across this page in the Index. It lists W. B. Wilson as the Administrator for eight different deceased persons with different last names on that page in Wharton County.  I did not count the total number or try to look up the dates.  The only reason I can think of for anyone being an Administrator for that many different people is as a Lawyer representing the estates or wanting to earn fees for services.

[John M. Gwin Note: Heading for 2nd column (where W. B. Wilson's name appears those eight times) says, "ADMINISTRATOR, EXECUTOR, OR GUARDIAN"; column three header is "DECEASED OR MINOR".  This document does not appear to be dated.]

The above 1862 newspaper clipping from the Houston Telegraph was found and sent in by Jim Hill--thanks, Jim!  (We have copied it below in case the image is broken.)  Notice that "W. B. Wilson, Esq., of Wharton" evidently carried from Beaumont to Houston the newspapers from which this article was written.  This is proof that W. B. Wilson was alive as late as 19 July 1862.

McClelland's Capture not Confirmed

He Makes a Stand at Berkley.
EVERYTHING STILL IN SUSPENSE
ETC., ETC., ETC.

By the Beaumont train of last (Friday) night, we have Mobile papers of the 6th and Jackson, Miss., of the 7th, for which  we are indebted to our friend W. B. Wilson, Esq., of Wharton.
We regret to have to announce that the intelligence reported in our last, that McClellan had surrendered with 14 Generals and 36,000 men, is not confirmed.  To be sure, we have no intelligence as late as that purports to be, but Mr. Wilson left Opelousas on the 15th, and says that Gov. Moore had not received the dispatch which passengers who left on the 12th reported he had, and, consequently, that ground of the report is removed.
