Introduction

Following is a story of a reunion of families who disappeared from each other and "were never heard from again."

Until the new millenium.

For the time being, I (John M. Gwin) am serving only in a capacity as unofficial scribe, there being no connection yet to me.  But give it time.  These stories always get better!          :-)

On 3 Nov 2000, Jay Rasco ( jtrain@cableone.net) ( jtrain481@msn.com) wrote me (John M. Gwin--jmcdgwin@zianet.com) the following:

John, I have just found about my Wilson connections, which came about by my posting to the Genforum on the Wilsons of Eastland, Texas.  A lady there recognized the names of Hodge (W. B. Wilson) in Elmer Bryan's story and gave me the phone number of Jimmy Wilson, son of Hodge Wilson.  I called him, and he gave me and my brother Jerry Rasco the name of Betty Gannaway in Abilene, (who provided all this information).  This is more info on the Wilsons than we have ever had. It's pretty exciting--makes me wish I had started searching a long time ago!  John, I don't know if any of this will help you in your search for Wilsons or not, but it's worth a try. Jay Rasco
And so I transcribed Betty's notes, putting them into my own format. (These transcriptions appear below in black type.)  Then this spring (2001) Jay sent me a copy of the Bryan Story as told (to him?) by his uncle, Elmer Bryan, on what may have been his 80th birthday in May 1993.  At that time Elmer had said,
In 1973 I had my first open heart surgery at Mercy Hospital, and in 1983 I had a second open heart surgery at Alvarado Hospital in La Mesa. The Lord has truly blessed me by saving my life after these two heart surgeries and helping me survive in 1993 and my 80th birthday.
I transcribed Jay's notes from Elmer into my own format as well, then entered them into the page below.  Elmer's recollections appear in red to contrast with Betty's black, and notes from Jay and/or me appear in green.  All of the information below, then, is my understanding of these notes shared by long-lost first cousins Jay Rasco and Betty Gannaway.  The information from each appears to concur with and complement that from the other.

Jay and I both believe that this Robertus Wilson line is connected somehow to my Nathaniel Burdine Wilson/Ezekiel Burdine Wilson family (please see A Rasco/Wilson/Gwin Connection), but we are still looking for the link--probably a sibling or ancestor of Robertus--that will connect them

Today (19 Jan 2008) I called and spoke with Betty Gannaway herself, who told me that recent research done by another cousin has shown that Robertus Wilson and Keziah Pitchlyn (Keziah said to be Native American), who were married only five years, had no children and thus could not be the parents of James C. Wilson. Therefore, I have changed the name of this page as shown above.

We'd all love to hear from any of you who may be able to help in this endeavor. Please let us know. Thanks!

John M. Gwin

SOURCES:
1. Jay Rasco contacted me with the original information (see Introduction, above).

2. Then he sent me all the data (in this red, below) from Uncle Elmer's memory (see Introduction, above).

3. Next, Betty Wilson Gannaway and I visited by telephone, and she told and sent me more data (in this green, below).

4.  Many photos--and other data in this orange--were sent to me in 2006-2008 by Julia Burton, xupx99jab

5. Much data based on the above was found using the various censuses (excerpted throughout).

6. Don Wilson has checked in with data as old as 1788; as we connect it, we're posting it in this turquoise, below.

7. Karrie contacted us in Sep 2009 with data listed below in this green.

8. Kristin Rasco contacted us in Dec 2010 with data listed below in this violet.

An Outline of the Known Family So Far

1.00--unknown Wilson, b. unk.; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unknown;

[Jay Rasco Note:  I am, of course, trying to find out who Willie Mae Wilson's grandparents are, and at this point there is some thinking that they are/were Robertus Wilson and Keziah Pitchlynn Wilson. I have evidence that Robertus and Keziah were married in Seveir County, AR, but there are no official documents that they had children. But there are some family members (distant cousins) who say that Robertus and Kezziah had (the four children named here):]

[John M. Gwin Note: But see Betty Gannaway's rebuttal above.]

[John Gwin Note:  Most of this data on Tennie Wilson Dunkin and her children is taken from a PDF descendent chart sent by Julia Burton. Her data, however, lists the children in the following birth order, which is inconsistent with the dates of birth: 1 Jack; 2 Asbury; 3 Garvey; 4 Nettie; 5 Hovey; 6 Homer]

John Gwin Note:  The circumstances in Johnny's birth seem to indicate that his father was other than and before her marriage to Lawson Bryan.  Elmer may have known of Johnny but not realized he was--or chosen to list him as--also one of Willie Mae's children.]

Hello. I am in the process of trying to figure out my genealogy. I stumbled upon your website--http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/WilsonAncestorsJimCScottJosephMartha.htm. I have come to many dead ends, and this is the best information I have found so far. I am the granddaughter of John Truman Sims (son of Lola Mae Wilson and John Lewis Sims).   John Truman was married to my grandmother Olive Gentry on March 16, 1947 in Witchita, KS.  They had 3 children: Sharon (living), Michael (living), and Kathi (passed--not sure of a date).  I have photos of my grandparents on their wedding day. I am thankful to have found all of this. Thank you for all the work you put into it. This was a true blessing to find. If I can help you in any way in return, please let me know.  Best to you,  Karrie

I haven't been able yet to find Lawson Buford Bryan in 1900, so I searched in 1880. This is as close as I've been able to get. Based on his age, his POB, and his 1880 location, I believe this is he. (The town of Blanket is in Brown Co. just over the line from Commanche Co., our Lawson's location in 1910.

Julia sent this to me in Oct 2007. This has to be our James C. Wilson and his family; the presence of two unique names--Willie Mae and Dove--dispels any doubt. And so now we can continue the search into 1880, 1870, and beyond and perhaps find out if this family is related to my Wilsons or not.

This is Willie Mae Wilson Bryan. This census records that they have been married two years, so their est. marriage date is 1908. Willie also told the census taker that she had only two children, both of whom are living (i.e., James and Sarah); therefore, either the "Johnny" story is not true, or  Willie has chosen not to tell Lawson or at least not to make it known to this census that she had a child out of wedlock.

[John M. Gwin Note: A Don Wilson contacted me in July and Aug 2009. From the looks of the names, dates, and places of his emails, he may be talking about family beyond our James C. Wilson. I include his posts here as undated but in the order received. If you would like to contact Don, email me, and I will forward your mail to him.]

Hello John

A.  I found you on net. My name is Don L. Wilson; you have posted The Wilson/Bryan Story, as James William Wilson b. 1788 is my 4g grandfather; in reading, a lot of info. is wrong.
Jacob Wilson, b. N. C., his son James W. Wilson, b. N. C.
The 1860 Clear Creek Twp. Sevier Co., AR; all the Wilsons listed are my family.  This is all recorded in family books.
They go from N. C. to Ky. to Ala. to Ar. to Tx.

B.  Ann Elizabeth Wilson, daughter of James and Delila, married John McHorse in Paint Rock Valley, Jackson Co., Ala. on 10/25/1838.

C.  I forgot to tell you we have a Wilson reunion in Brownwood, Texas, in Oct. If you like, come on.

D.  Ann Oldham has written two books with my help,  A Newton Tree and The Willson/Wilson of Thomas and Jean Willson and Their Descendents. The Newtons and Wilsons have a close family tie.  The orginal name was Willson.  Jacob, when he moved to Ky in1794, dropped one L.  The Wilson book has 180 pages.

E.  The Wilson line seven generations,
I am trying to connect who is James C.'s father and mother.
The Newton family brought the Wilsons to Texas from Ark. in 1860.
There is a book Historical Trip Through Barren County, Kentucky written by C. C. Simmons who married a Wilson.
The family main line is Rowan Co., N. C. to Barren Co., Ky. to Jackson Co., Al., Clark Co. and Sevier Co. Ark.  to Tx., to Calif., and back to Tx.
Part of family John Ferguson Wilson and wife Sarah Wilson lived in Washington, Indiana.

The younger lady sitting at center looks to me to be Lilly Alice Beggs Wilson. If these speculations are true, then the man standing at left is probably Lilly's husband Dove, and the five kids are likely theirs, too (the oldest five of these?): Willie, Ellen, Hodge, Helen, Orpha, Frances, Jack.]

John, Thanks so much for all you're doing.  I was wondering on the death certificate of Dove Wilson: Samuel Watson Wilson Jr signed it; now, Samuel is a brother to Dove, and the father's name is Jim, so where did the Jr come from on Samuel?
Julia

Julia, Just a thought here: perhaps Sam Jr. is Dove's nephew, son of Dove's brother Samuel.

John A A Mobbs 1
Jerry Mobbs 8/12
Nancy A Mobbs 12

Look at the above item from the 1860 census. I see a Sarah Jane Mobbs, b. ca. 1855, whose mother's name is Tennessee. Our Sarah had a firstborn daughter named Tennessee. If she is ours, and if her husband were b. 1840, he'd be 15 years older than she, but it's worth a followup.

Readers, please take a look
at these Sevier Co., Arkansas, Wilson families in the 1860 census

and tell me if you think the third one, Jacob, could be the family of our
James C. and his brothers Joseph and Scott and sisters Sarah
and Betsy.
If so, then we have found not only James' father, Jacob Wilson, but most likely his grandfather as well, James Wilson, b. ca. 1788!

Callie's last name was Wilson. I think her husband's name was George Kennedy. They lived in Mineola, Texas
Thank you for all the information.

John, I gave you the wrong date of mother's death. It is October the 14th instead of the 12th. I was going to tell you a story told about the Wilsons in DeQueen, Ark. Back in the 1930s the Wilson family came into a lot of land.  One brother became very jealous of the brother with the land and killed him and took the dead brothers name and land. Also an old trunk with a lot of important papers belonging to the Wilson family burned around 1938 or in that time period. My uncle Charlie Wilson and his son Clarence were in DeQueen, and he pulled into a service station for gas. When Uncle Charlie asked the attendant about the Wilsons there in DeQueen stating that he was related to them, the man Uncle Charlie was talking to suddenly got a gun and told them to leave. Needless to say they left. Clarence said he could remember that very clearly. I don' t know how long ago that was. Clarence was a young man at the time this took place. This story was told many times in the family. I know Milton T. Wilson, a family member--probably an uncle, was involved or knew a lot about it.  Thanks for taking time to read this.  Elizabeth
