[John M. Gwin Note--14 May 2020: And here's an interesting side note, at least for me:  I descend from Thomas Walker, Jr.'s SISTER, Jane Walker, who married Polly Gwin's BROTHER, John Gwin.  That means that I am DOUBLE cousin to all of Thomas' and Polly's descendants, which, of course, includes all the descendants on this page as well.]

Thomas Walker, Jr., and Mary "Polly" Gwin at
Unity Baptist Church
near Hardinsburg, Washington Co., IN
As stated in the "Sources" section above, in August 2016 I visited the Genealogy Department of the Stevens Memorial Museum at the John Hay Center on Market Street in Salem, Washington Co., IN, where a docent, Mr. Jeremy Elliott, and others helped me find material on the Unity Baptist Church where Tom and Polly (Gwin) Walker; her parents, and three other of her siblings were once received into membership.

According to the "Records of the Unity Baptist Church near Hardinsburg [Washington County, Indiana], 1818-1858, Typed and donated by Clara M. (Shanks) Burns, Salem, Ind., Received June 1963":

23.01--Thos. Walker and Polly Walker were each received June 1819 by letter and dismissed April 1827 by letter.  This confirms that Polly was alive and still married to Tom as late as April 1827, some ten years before the widowed Thomas married Jane Crim.  Further, from the Providence church records, we know that they joined Providence church the same month, April 1827.

Other family members' names I recognized in that list included:

23.05--Joseph Tipton and Jane Tipton (Polly Walker's sister Virginia Jane Gwin Tipton and brother-in-law Joseph Tipton); he was received by letter Feb. 1819 and dismissed June 1821 by letter; she was received Feb 1819, but Ms. Burns' transcription (and I assume the original as well) leaves blank any data regarding how Jane was received or how or when she was dismissed.  We do know that she was still alive in 1821 and probably still married to Joseph at that time.

22.00--Isom "Gwinn" (sic) and Mary Gwinn (sic--Polly Gwin Walker's parents); they were each received September 1825 by letter and dismissed "by death".  We know from his will that he died in Dec 1830, so this "by death" statement confirms that his membership was at Unity until that date.  And we know from the 1850 census, some 20 years after Isom's death, that she was blind, 80 years of age, and living with her widowed daughter Minerva and Minerva's children; therefore, her "by death" statement means that she would have been a Unity member until after that date.

23.02--David Denton and Elizabeth Denton (Polly Walker's sister Elizabeth Gwin Denton and brother-in-law David Denton); they were each received by letter in January 1835; Elizabeth was dismissed "by death"
, but not David.

23.11--Elijah Wright and "Manerva" (sic) Wright (Polly Walker's sister Minerva Gwin Wright and brother-in-law Elijah Wright); they were each received by letter in January 1835; Elijah, but not Minerva, was dismissed "by death".  We know from their deed that Elijah and Minerva bought and owned the 160-acre southeast quarter of Section 20, Township 1 South, and Range 2 East, on 15 Mar 1842, some seven years after they joined Unity Church.  So Elijah was alive and a member of this church at least those seven years.  I visited this property in August 2016 and spoke with the current owner, a Mr. Larramore, asking him if he knew of any old graves on his land.  He had not, but he said he'd recently found an old well and the foundation stones for a cabin, and he offered to drive me to the site, which I accepted.  He'd placed a large flat stone over the well to keep anyone from falling in, and the several stones had surely been part of the foundation of a building.  Is this where Elijah died and where Minerva brought her blind, 80-year-old mother to live her last days, where they were found in the 1850 census?  Could they be buried here on this property?

Subject: Thomas Walker's second wife Jane

Hi guys, I was poking around on Ancestry.com trying to find a marriage record for Thomas Walker and Polly Gwin. Not successful, but I did find a marriage record for a couple who must be Thomas and his second wife, Jane.

Indiana Marriages, 1802-1892 Record about Thomas Walker

Name: Thomas Walker; Spouse: Jane Crim; Date: 4 Feb 1837; County: Martin; State: Indiana; Source: Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT; Microfilm: 1316952 & 1436077
I also found another marriage that is interesting: Indiana Marriages, 1802-1892 Record about Thomas Walker.
Name: Thomas Walker; Spouse: Ann Queen; Date: 28 Mar 1842; County: Martin; State: Indiana; Source: Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT; Microfilm: 1316952 & 1436077
I don't have a clue about this one, do you guys? Wonder which Tom this is? I also did searches on Walker with keywords Martin, Orange, Crawford, Harrison, and Daviess. See attached PDF's   Bunches of
mystery Walkers.  Mike in SC
Looking for Tom and second wife, Jane, in the
1850,
1860, and 1870 censuses:

OK, here's another interesting piece:
From the 30 Sep 1850 census of Rutherford Twp., Martin Co., IN:
Residence #83, Family #83:

Thomas Walker, 59, male, farmer, $300 real estate, b. Tennessee, cannot read and write

Jane Walker, 59, female, b. Kentucky, cannot read and write

Anderson Walker, 18 male, farmer, b. Indiana

Eliza Simmons, 18, female, b. Indiana

This could very well be our Thomas Walker and this second wife, Jane, living with his second-youngest son, Anderson, and someone named Eliza Simmons (Anderson's bride/fiance/family friend?).  They are living in the same Indiana county, Martin, as Thomas and Polly's son Isom Gwin Walker.

Let's see if we can find them in 1860.

OK, here are Thomas and Jane,  each 67 and b. in TN and KY, respectively, living in Halbert Bluff, Columbia Twp., Martin Co., IN.  Living next door is a Sarah Walker, 25, b. IN, in the home of John, 30, and Mary, 24, Walpert, and their four young children. I believe that Mary Walpert and Sarah Walker could be two of Anderson's sisters.

And here is Anderson, 28, also living in Halbert Bluff, Lost River Twp., Martin Co., IN, with wife Margreate, 28, and children James, 7; Wm. H., 5; Thomas, 3;, and John, six months. (Living next door is Hannah Walker, 35; and children Mary, 14; Thomas, 11; Wm. H., 9; and M. A., 7, a daughter.)  I believe that Hannah could be the widow of one of Anderson's brothers.

Shall we try in 1870?  Hmmm. Nothing confirmed yet on Thomas or Anderson--maybe one of Anderson's kids:

[Mike Walker Note--Mar 2006
John and Jim, I was researching Isham Gwin Walker's children on Ancestry.com, and stumbled on this line of Gwin descendents.

Isham Gwin Walker (s.o. Thomas Walker Jr. and Polly Gwin) had a daughter named Susannah Walker, b. 1839, who married an Edward Moore, b. 1819. in Martin County, IN in 1869. They had several children, one of whom they named after his great-great-grandfather Isom Gwin. He had two sons, Roy and Rex in 1899 and 1902. Apparently they moved to Kansas between 1910 and 1920.

Did you guys know about this line? It is easy to trace it via census data.

[John M. Gwin Note--11 May 2020:  The marriage data below was taken from the Ancestry.com page located at this URL: https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=OGN1&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&indiv=1&dbid=5059&gsfn=isom%20g&gsln=moore&new=1&rank=1&uidh=2gw&redir=false&msT=1&gss=angs-d&pcat=34&fh=0&h=2047633&recoff=&ml_rpos=1&queryId=0bb45c0ab43fedf09faf7ef309e2aca4  ]

The Athens Review
Services for Frank C. Perkins, 86, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at First Christian Church, Athens, with the Rev. Bill Hauck officiating.  Burial will be at Oak Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Carroll- Lehr Funeral Home.
Perk, as he was known to his close friends and family, passed away peacefully from this world into his Savior's arms the evening of August 20, 2011, in Athens, Texas, surrounded by the love of his family.
Perk was born Oct. 3, 1924 in Washington, Indiana to the late Lucille Moore and Charles Abraham Perkins, Sr.  He married Dorothy "Dot" Hickey in 1947 in Odessa, Texas.   They were happily married for 55 years.
Perk joined the U.S. Navy at 17 to serve during World War II.  After leaving the service he attended Louisiana Tech, and then he was off to Rice University, where he was the shortstop for the Rice Owls.
He completed his education at Oklahoma University, where he received his degree in petroleum engineering.  He started his career with Gulf Oil Company and continued practicing engineering with San Juan Exploration and Producing Properties, Inc.  Following years of working in the field managing drilling projects, he then became a vice-president at Republic National Bank, using his petroleum engineering experience in the oil loan department.
He was an elder at East Dallas Christian Church and was very active coaching the men's and women's baseball teams.
All Perk ever wanted was a simple life.  So in 1976 he retired to Athens, buying the ranch of his dreams and, of course, a John Deere tractor.  Raising Santa Gertrudis cattle, mending fences, and working the land with his dogs by his side was a dream come true for Perk.  Moving to Athens allowed him to be a constant fan at his grandchildren's sporting events, where he made friends with everyone around him, both young and old.  He loved baseball and, of course, his beloved Texas Rangers.         Life at the ranch provided him with many happy memories of holiday celebrations, Sunday meals, and opportunities for him and Dot to be surrounded by the children and grandchildren they held so dear to their hearts and loved so very much.
After moving to Athens, he became an active member of First Christian Church where he taught Sunday school for 20 years.  It was here that he met his lovely wife Betty Tinsley. Together they enjoyed being stewards of the church as well as entertaining family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his wife of 55 years Dorothy; sister, Ruth Perkins; sons, Kertis Paul Perkins and Frank Keith Perkins.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Betty Perkins of Athens; brother, Charles Abraham Perkins, Jr., of Santa Fe, N.M., son William Karl Perkins of Dallas; daughter, Kelley P. Deibel of Athens; daughter-in-law Linda Katherine Perkins of Bella Vista Ark.
He leaves behind his grandchildren, Amanda Kody Lawson and husband Michael of Guthrie, Okla., John Fredrick Deibel, Jr. of Tyler, Matthew Scott Perkins and wife Chandra of Bentonville, Ark., and great-grandchildren Jackson Paul Lawson, Dylan Kayla Meyers and Samuel Dutch Perkins.

Searching for Maggie Moore Bledsoe Lefler
[John M. Gwin Note:  All material in this olive drab color regarding descendants of 25.03--Susannah Walker, above, who married Edward Moore was taken from material posted by an unknown-to-me contributor at Ancestry.com and is unresearched by me.  The color of material I have researched and confirmed has been changed to black.

One reason to hold this contributor's claims here as possibly in error, at least in part, is the claim that Margaret gives three of her children by Otto Bledsoe the same names as three of her kids by Otto Lefler!  Before now I've only seen this occur in cases of memorializing one child who died young by naming another younger sibling after her or him.  And so I will plan to go to the census documents, searching the names of Margaret's alleged husbands, to correct or confirm this claim.

And I did.  I searched for Otto Bledsoe in the 1900 census of Indiana with a spouse named Margaret, and, as you can see, I found Otto, Maggie, and Jean living in French Lick Twp. of Orange Co., IN, where Maggie states that she has been married three years with only one child still living of two who have been born to her.

Checking further, I found the family again in 1910, where Maggie states that she's birthed FIVE children, only three of whom are still living, none of which three is old enough to be Jean, meaning Jean has died between the 1900 and 1910 censuses.

Next we found them in the 1920 census, then in the 1930 census.

Then we saw a photo of his death certificate and their FindAGrave memorials, complete with a clear photo of their gravestone.]

John,
...I am the daughter of Thurston T. Walker (and Emma Cross), son of Thomas Thurston Walker  (and Mabel Tweeten), son of Thomas Thurston Walker (and Bertha Weedman) , son of Isom Gwin Walker II (and Margaret Childers), son of Isom Gwin Walker I (and  Clarissa Thurston)...

25.09--Thomas Thurston Walker m. Lucinda Riley;
26.04--
Thomas Thurston Walker m. Lucinda Riley;
The first (25.09--) Thomas Thurston Walker (as you know) was the son of Isham (sp?) Gwin Walker, Sr., and Clarissa Thurston.  He was born in 1854 in Indiana, married Lucinda Riley, and died in Illinois 1926.  He established the Walker line from which Mike Shelby Walker descended. According to the way Ancestry.com calculates relationships, this Thomas Thurston Walker is my gg-granduncle.  When I first started working on my genealogy, I had a hard time not mixing him up with my great grandfather and may have incorrectly attached censuses, records, etc placing his death in Indiana -- I think I have fixed this now.

The second (26.04--) Thomas Thurston Walker was my great-grandfather who was the child of Isham (sp?) Gwin Walker, Jr., and Margaret Childers.  He was born in Indiana (maybe Boone or Martin Co.) in 1881 and married Bertha Weedman (of Pike Co, IN) in 1905.  By the 1910 Census, "Big Tom" Walker (he was a mountain-sized man) and Bertha were living in Adams Co., ND,  with their 3-year-old son  (my grandfather), (27.01--) Thomas Thurston Walker II and younger sons Robert and Paul.  Also living with them was another man, 28-y-o Osker (Elmer) Louis who had come from Indiana with Big Tom.  (Mr. Louis appears on all the censuses for 1910-1940 with Big Tom as a farmhand, but I wish I knew whether there was some other connection, as this is an awful long time to work for someone with little or no pay -- he is just another unsolved mystery.)

Big Tom was also accompanied in his move from Indiana to North Dakota by his parents, Isham Gwin Walker, Jr., and Margaret Childers Walker, as you can see in the 1910 Census.  Although I had very little from my father on our genealogy, I do remember that when I was in my later teens, my dad told me that he knew his great-grandparents had lived in a "soddy" in North Dakota.  If this is true, I can understand a rationale for why they ended up buried in Virginia:  their eldest daughter, Laura Emily Walker (wife of Fred Hagen) who also appears in the 1910 Census in Hettinger, ND, moved to Virginia.  Conditions in ND were very bad, and perhaps when she moved to Virginia, she also moved her elderly parents with her hoping to improve life for those elderly folks, too.  Unless you have other information, I place their final resting places in New Kent Co., Virginia (quite a change in terrain from ND!!)  Laura and her husband seemed to have done well in VA, and she is (I believe) buried in Richmond, VA. (She had daughters, but I have not figured out who in that line to contact  -- another genealogy project to work out.)

But I digress.  By the end of the 1930s life in ND had taken its toll on the Walkers, and they were shattered and scattered.  Bertha with all of her young daughters can be found in the 1940s Census for Portland, OR.  Most of the Walker sons pulled up stakes and relocated to Oregon or other western states.  Big Tom Walker was still in ND on the farm in ND in the 1940 Census, living with his son (27.07--) Lynn and Lynn's wife (also) named Bertha and the ever faithful, Oscar Louis.  I do not know where Big Tom is buried or exactly when he died, but my mother recalls that he had cancer, and Bertha, his wife, returned from Oregon to nurse him at the end--but I don't know if she is right.

Big Thomas Thurston Walker and Bertha Weedman had 11 children in ND.  Their eldest, my grandfather, was named (27.01--) Thomas Thurston Walker, born 1906.  Since his father was called Tom, he was called Thurston.  Thurston married Mabel Tweeten, and together they had five sons and one daughter  My father (called Tom) was the eldest son and through an error was named (28.01--)
Thurston Thomas Walker. (See above)  When Mabel was pregnant with my Uncle Billy, Thurston deserted his wife and family in ND and moved to Oregon were he died in 1967. My father was the only one who had any contact with the "Oregon Walkers", and after he died in 2010, I realized I knew next to nothing about my kin.  I never met my grandfather Thurston or my great-grandmother Bertha, although they lived in Oregon until the mid 1960s.  It would be nice to close the chasm, but I might be too late for this life.

So, this is my (sad) story of the four Thomas Thurston Walkers.  I hope it contributes in some small way to your continued genealogical study.  Let me know if anything is inconsistent with your data.

[John M. Gwin Note--14 May 2020 I copied the following obituary from an unknown source some years ago, perhaps from Kinsey's FindAGrave memorial.

CORNWELL, Kinsey F., Spring Valley Herald  January 6, 1911
Kinsey F. Cornwell, of this city, who had been in bad health for some time, was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Hags of Martin Co., some time ago when he became bedfast, and Monday (January 2, 1911) he passed away peacefully to rest. His death was caused by a ruptured blood vessel near the base of his brain. He was buried at Wagoner's Chapel, Martin County, Wednesday. He had been engaged in the restaurant business at this place, but for the past year he drove the Wells Hotel Bus.]

CAUTION.  The data and descendants for Laura E. Walker, below, are partially unsubstantiated and not necessarily correct.
25.11--Laura Emily Walker, b. ca. 1858 in IN; d. in 1898 in Gore, OK at ca. age 41; bd. unk.; m. 19 Aug 1879 in Martin Co., IN, to Thomas Milton "Mack" McKittrick/Mack (b. ca. 1857 in KY; d. unk.; bd. unk.); no ch. in 1880 census, as they have been married barely 10 months; also living in the home in 1870 is a Hattie F. Walker, age 2; also living in the home in the 1880 census are her father, Isom G. Walker and her niece (we're still unsure who the parents are), Hattie F. Walker, 11; evidently Thomas Milton McKittrick changed his and his family's last name to "Mack" at some point, possibly because his nickname may have been Mack, possibly because his last name may have been difficult for some to pronounce;

[NOT LISTED in the 29 Aug 1860 Census of Halbert Bluff, Lost River Twp., Martin Co., IN, SO WHERE IS SHE?  Perhaps she's not as old as she said she was in 1870 and 1880 and therefore not yet born...]
[listed as Lawra E. Walker, age 13, in the 18 Aug 1870 Census of Shoals, Lost River Twp., Martin Co., IN];
[listed as Laura McKittrick, age 22, b. IN/IN/NY in the 30 Jun 1880 census of Lost River Twp., Martin Co., IN, and hosting (1) her father, Isom G. Walker, 65, b. TN/TN/TN, and (2) her niece, Hattie F. Walker, 11, b. IN/IN/OH]
[listed as T. Milton McKittrick, age 23, b. KY/KY/IN, in the 30 Jun 1880 census of Lost River Twp., Martin Co., IN, and hosting (1) his f-i-l, Isom G. Walker, 65, b. TN/TN/TN, and (2) his niece, Hattie F. Walker, 11, b. IN/IN/OH, and lvg. next door to a McKittrick couple and family who are likely his parents]

[John M. Gwin Note--8 Mar 2022:  Today it has occurred to me that the 25.10--Emily N. Walker and the 25.11--Laura E. Walker COULD be the same person.  Nancy E. (the E could stand for "Emily") appears in 1860 at age 4, then disappears.  The Laura Emily doesn't appear in 1860 (but should at about age 4-5) but DOES appear in 1870 at age 13.  Her extra name or nickname could be "Nancy".]
