78 Listen,
my people, to my [b]instruction; Incline
your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I
will open
my mouth in a parable; I will tell riddles of old,
3 Which
we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us.
4 We
will not
conceal them from their children, But we
will tell
the generation to come
the praises of the Lord, And His
power and His wondrous
works that He has done.
5 For He established a testimony
in Jacob, and appointed a law
in Israel, which He commanded our fathers that
they were to teach them to their children,
6 So
that the generation to come
would know, the children yet
to be born, that they would
arise and tell them to
their children,
7 So that they would put
their confidence in God and not
forget the works of God, but comply
with His commandments
8 And not
be like their fathers, a stubborn and
rebellious generation, a generation
that did
not prepare
its heart and whose spirit was not faithful
to God.

[Special]--News has just reached here that Mr. John Vining, a farmer who lived six miles east of here, committed suicide near Pittsboro about twenty-two miles from his home. He had been in a state of mental aberration for some time, and he had been brought to Coffeeville and confined, that he might be placed in the state asylum, but was thought to be better and released. He was visiiting his wife's father in Calhoun County and was in a room with several children, and, after telling them to go out and play, seized a shotgun, placed the muzzle over his heart and touched the trigger with the ramrod, when the gun was discharged, killing him instantly.

You were born in December of 1980. You were always sweet and happy, and you loved to swim. You were always there when I came to visit. I was devastated when you moved to Tennessee from California with your family. You were taken from us at the tender age of 19, killed by a drunken driver.

Embrace Your Vining Heritage
By Cynthia Vining Dean
Taken from her Facebook page Aug 2023Our first Vining immigrant came from Wincanton, Somerset, England. Yes, we are from an immigrant family, so therefore we are all immigrants to this country. Many people that came to the colonies came as indentured servants. However, William Vining did not. He came to meet up with his elder brother John and make his way in this country.
William came from a middle class family that owned The White Horse Inn. Our William left England some time in the 1670's and settled eventually in the colony of Massachusetts. His son William married a woman by the name of Ann Nichols.
When Ann was thrown out of their Presbyterian Church, William decided to move south to North Carolina. His son Jeptha became a dyed-in-the-wool, fire-and-brimstone pastor in the Baptist faith. He eventually went to Georgia to set up many new houses of worship.
Along the way he would buy up head rights to land that was near the rivers and then sell them at a profit. Jeptha would allow black slaves into his churches, which was not very common in the Southern churches at that time.
Both Jeptha and his son Thomas were Patriots. Jeptha gave money to the American army, and Thomas was paid by the army to be the Watcher of the Road.
Thomas' son was John Vining, born 1796. He was a state senator and represenative for the state of Alabama from Madison Co. throughout the 1820's and 1830's. He was a Presbyterian by faith.
When John's son John married Ann Carty, our descendants acquired the MTHFR*** mutated gene. Out of their eight children, seven inherited the mutated gene which accounts for the alcoholics and mental disorders as well as the eccentric people in the later generations.
John Sasser Vining, the son of John born 1825 fought for the North in the Civil War.
As our family went out into the wilderness, schools became less accessible. My own father only got a third grade education because he contracted TB. However, his brothers and he all went to Technical Schools and became airplane mechanics for the big planes, and my father learned how to install sprinkler systems in new buildings. They would periodically go for more training to enhance their trades and do better.
I am proud to be a daughter of a blue collar worker. It enabled me to get a college degree while my sister got her masters in English. We in turn have had our children get a higher education. Each generation should do better than the last. So we have a lot to be thankful for.
Our forebearers were good God-fearing people who took interest in their communities and supported the American Revolution and for the North in the Civil War. None of our family were slave owners, because we didn't profit from the slave trade. I believe our tolerance for people who are different than we are is our heritage, and I still carry on that tradition in my own life.
***What We Need to Know About the MTHFR MutationBy Jennifer Trimbee, RNUpdated: Feb 16, 2021Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase or MTHFR is a gene. Every person carries two copies of this gene, one from each parent. Gene mutations occur when there is a variant in a gene's DNA coding. There are many MTHFR mutations, but the two most common variants are C677T and A1298C. People diagnosed with an MTHFR variant have a mutation in either one or both copies of their MTHFR gene.

FAG BIO for JEHUDOB: "Abt. 1780" Note: I do not know if 1780 is correct... or a transcription error. I've seen both 1780 and 1790 cited in various family trees. However, if his wife's DOB of 1780 is correct, I'm guessing 1780 is correct for him.
No DOD is listed.
Jehu was the son of Shadrack and Phereby (Ratcliff) Vining, and he married Sarah Williams 26 Jul 1810 in Morgan Co., Georgia.

ROGERS KILLS THRASHER...
M. Thrasher, a share cropper on the farm of L. C. Rogers about six miles east of Ashland, was shot five tmes by a revolver in the hand of Rogers Tuesday morning and died immediately after the shooting. Rogers came to Ashland and gave himself up to the sheriff and was placed in jail to await his preliminary hearing here tomorrow (Friday) morning. It seems that Rogers and Thrasher had been having trouble all during the year, and the trouble was aggravated Tuesday over the gathering of the crop, culminating in the death of Thrasher. It is a very sad affair. Thrasher is survived by a wife and several children. Rogers also has a wife.
CARD OF THANKS...To Our Many Friends:
We wish to thank you for the kindness shown us at the death of our dear husband and father, also for the nice box we received from the Ashland friends. We shall never forget the wonderful way you proved to be our friends in this sad hour of trouble.
Mrs. M. Thrasher and Children

The following is a copy of a letter written to my mother [John M. Gwin Note--unk. date: Mrs. Adrian Belle Vardaman Gwin, my grandmother] by Leon A. Nolen of 1609 12th St., Birmingham, AL, on 29 Sep 1944.
"Dear distant cousins:
"As
you
know, I have been interested in my family line in order to know
whence they came and what contributions they made in the times in
which they lived. We have the Vining line in common.
"About
three
or four years ago, I visited for a short while with Miss Annie
Vardaman and her father, John T. Vardaman in
Sylacauga, Alabama. At that time I knew very little of the
Vining Family; since, however, I have found records which show our
relationship. At that time Mr. John T. Vardaman told me that Mr.
John
Forsythe Vardaman [JOHN GWIN
Note: my great-grandfather], father of
Mrs. [Adrian Belle Vardaman]
Gwin and Mrs. [Maggie Mae
Vardaman] Webb, along about 1870 or 1880
wrote down in a book--a buckskin or calfskin back, I remember he
said--a history of the different family connections--the Vardamans
and Vinings, etc. Cousin Maggie [JOHN GWIN Note: the aforementioned
Mrs. Webb] tells me that there was such a book her
father had, but she is unable to locate it. If that book could be
found, it certainly would throw a lot of light on things that may
be now forever lost. I should like very much to see it in
reference to the Vining family. If possible it would be found, we
are beginning to think more of our lineage now than formerly."
(Note: this book
has never turned up and is evidently lost forever--James B.

The following is taken from a letter written to my mother from a Leon A. Nolen dated October 11, 1944 address 1609 12th St., B'ham, AL
LAN-10--He states that there were three Vardaman brothers who married three Vining sisters. This agrees with other records that we have. However, the names of the Vardaman brothers differ from our records. He states that the brothers were named Thomas, Joseph, and William.
LAN-11--Our records show that they were Peter, James, and William. Thomas Vardaman who married Annie Vining was the son of James. However, our record does not show who the original three Vardaman brothers married, and it could be that they married the three sisters before Thomas their son married Annie. This letter states that the three sisters were named Annie, Rachal (sic), and Ruth; another sister to the above was Zilpha Vining who married Joseph Tomme around 1800 in Jefferson Co., GA, a second marriage in 1840 to Anthony Holloway in Troup County, GA. (note that a daughter of Edwy Vardaman, son of Thomas Vardaman, had a daughter named "Zylpha Thommie Hollaway Vardaman, evidently named for this Zilpha Vining.)
LAN-12--Also some names are given which are not found in the other records that I have. Children of Thomas Vardaman and Annie Vining:
Edwy L. Vardaman b. in Newberry District, SC, 1804;
Jane E. Vardaman, b. 22 Mar 1821;
Thomas Jefferson Vardaman, b. 4 Apr 1828;
Peter Lafayette Vardaman, b. 11 Feb. 1830; and
Ruth Vardaman.
LAN-13--This letter states that evidently there were a number of other children as the records are missing from the time of their marriage until 1821. He states that Ruth Vining was old enough to join the Crooked Creek Church in Putnam Co., GA, indicating that Ruth was born early in the marriage. This letter states that Annie Vining Vardaman is buried in an unmarked grave near Sylacauga AL, in Mount Olive Cem. A brother of Annie Vining, Jehu Vining, who was born in 1790, is buried in the old Acker Cem. in Bibb Co. (it doesn't say if this is GA or AL.).
LAN-14--The name of a Mr. Greer is given as a descendent of a Rev. Jeptha Vining.
LAN-15--I have the name of a Mrs. Gladys J. Busby, (Mrs. George M. Busby) of Rt. 1 Box 160, Chandler, Arizona, dated 1955, as being a relative of the marriage of Annie Vining and Thomas Vardaman, who has collected some genealogy on this family.
LAN-16--The following names are found in Coosa County Cemeteries Records, a copy of which is to be found in the Archives of Auburn University, and are believed to be related to the Family of John Forsythe Vardaman. Information taken from cemetery headstones and from Vol. #1 pages 150, 151, and 131:

[John M. Gwin Note--8 Nov 2023: Most of the data included in Abraham's and Eleanor's entry above is taken from Mr. Russ Livingston's WikiTree.com page modified some six years ago on 27 Mar 2017. Russ lists Abrahams' father as William Vining, not John, and for several reasons, I'm tending to agree with Russ and lean toward William myself. I need to ask Delane about that.]

Mr. Vining was born in Atkinson County, Georgia on August 30, 1940 to Mr. George Vining and Myrtice Rowe Vining Jackson.
Mr. Vining was preceded in death by his parents, as listed, and his loving wife of 35 years, Susan Brantley Vining, son Dan Gary Vining, Jr., brother Vince Vining, sister Mamie Vining Summerlin and second wife Joan Melton Vining.
Mr. Vining is survived by his son, Danny Vining, granddaughter Amanda (Billy) Elliott, two daughters Debbie Howell and Sherry Newman, two bonus daughters Tonya (Tim) Hall and Missy Melton, brother Jay Vining and two sisters Delane Delk and Melinda Wilson, and great-grandson Jaxson Powers, all of Jacksonville, Florida.
In the early 1960's, Mr. Vining moved his small family to Jacksonville where he obtained employment with the Swisher tobacco company, furthered his career and education, and remained for over 25 years, earning many awards and achievements along the way.
Eventually, he and his wife Susan decided to start their own company and formed Gary's Trucking, where he and Susan worked diligently to form a prosperous company which he ran and operated until his retirement.
In his retirement years one of his biggest enjoyments was going to the flea markets and garage sales. On Friday or Saturday morning, you could always find him searching for a garage sale. He also enjoyed having his own garage sales. He always thought that if he paid 25 cents for something, then certainly it had to be worth at least two dollars to anyone else, and that was what he expected to get out of it. He also enjoyed fishing, having barbecues, and just being with family.
Mr. Vining was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Garden City Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida.

Genealogy Update from Delane: Wednesday, 8 Nov 2023
John,
I had knee surgery two weeks ago for a “bucket handle" torn meniscus. It has not been fun at all. Still in a brace and will be at least until my next appointment Nov 28. I have no idea how I managed to tear it, but I sure hope it’s a one and done... We lost Gary (b. 30 Aug 1940) 15 Aug 2022 to a sudden heart attack. Vince (b. 3 May 1953) died from cancer 7 Feb 2011. My older sister Mamie Vining Summerlin (b. 18 Dec 1945) died 19 Oct 2017. So that’s three out of six. My brother Jay (Jefferson Vining b. 6 April 19430) has been in a nursing facility since Feb 2023. He has cancer and wasn’t expected to survive a month when he was admitted into the hospital in February, but he has a strong will to live. We are blessed that he is still here. I think you have my parents' information--George Vinson Vining and Myrtice Coreen Rowe Vining Jackson. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season. It’s always good to hear from fellow family trying to preserve family history.

Comments from Delane E. V. DelkI have to share with you. Most of you that know my family knows we lost my younger brother Vincent way too soon, and when we did, it almost killed me. He and I were very close. Shared some deep secrets while he was spending his last few weeks on this earth. His personality was one that only he shared. The remaining siblings only wished we had that gift of walking into a room and within just a few minutes having the entire room laughing. He was the only one of seven that was gifted with always making you feel better not matter how bad it was.I loved my brother with my entire being. To tell you he was no saint was putting it mildly. I could sit here and say if only for eternity, but unless you walked a mile in our shoes, you couldn't possibly understand the torture that lived within your soul every day. But enough of that.We knew my brother has a son, Thomas Vining, Tommy to us. Tommy celebrated his very first birthday in our home in Fayetteville, NC. Due to many reasons, we lost contact with Tommy until about eight or nine years ago. We reconnected through My Space. I'm sure some of you remember My Space, and it was about four months before we lost my brother. Now due to Ancestry DNA we have learned Vincent left us another wonderful surprise: a beautiful daughter Sarah Marie Carey! Tommy flew from Alaska to Virginia Beach to meet his sister for the very first time today. They both look so much like their dad that my heart sings with joy. I am so happy for Tommy and Sarah, but I am extremely happy for our family also. I have sat here and looked at this photo and cried like a baby. I know my baby brother can't help but be happy knowing his babies are together. I wish I could be there to share these wonderful special moments with the two of you, but know you both are in my heart. Welcome Sarah!!!29.01--Thomas Vining; facebook [PRIVATE]; m. unk.
