SOURCES:

(1)  In October 2003, Carol Callison, another "potential" cousin, sent in several different e.mails of information on descendants of Horatio and Lucinda, as well as a photo and some family data on a somewhat mysterious Theodore Gwin and his wife Elizabeth. I've not seen where we are related yet, so I have created this page as a clearinghouse on anything related to these couples. Hopefully, having her information available to others viewing my own will allow someone to make a connection. Please feel free to e.mail Carol and/or me, John Gwin, with any questions or anything you may have related to the people mentioned in this site.

Horatio Jones Gwin

I am still looking for information on my gg grandfather, Horatio Jones Gwin. He was born about 1809 in PA. He died 1881 near Handford, CA. He married Lucinda Newcomb in Knox County, OH 1838. She died Nobelville, Hamilton Co. IN, Aug. 1850. They had 4 children: Mary b. 1839, Gaven b. 1841, Thomas b. 1843, Austin b. 1846 (my g grandfather). All the children were born in Ohio, except Austin who was born in Michigan. After Lucinda's death Austin was raised by his uncle Leonard Newcomb, Thomas went with Horatio to CA. Austin married Florence Tripp, had 8 children and died in Oklahoma 1914. Thomas stayed in CA and died after 1930. I have no idea what happened to Mary or Gaven. I think Horatio parents were John and Catherine, but no proof.

I have records of Austin B. Gwinn, married to Florence Clupp( but could be Trapp?) They had 9 children: Rush, twins, Hattie and Harry, Aggie, John, Lou, and Charles Edgar Arthur(my g-grandfather); he was married to Myrtle Edgar. Myrtle was born 12-31-1888. Could we be in the same tree?

I believe we are working on the same tree! My great grandfather was Austin Burt Gwin; he was married to Florence A. (maybe Aurilea) Tripp. What I have for their children is: Mary Lucinda (Lou), Agnes M. (Aggie?), Emily, William Harrison (Harry), his twin Harriet E. (Hattie or Hat), Horatio (Rush), John Robert (my grandfather) and Charles E. A. Gwin.
I have a photo of Charles' headstone; he is buried at Terlton Cemetry at Terlton, Pawnee Co., OK. I do have him married to Myrtle, but I could never find her maiden name.
The last thing I found for Myrtle is the 1920 Housecreek, Pawnee Co., OK, census. She is listed as Myrtle Swain with the correction of Gwin. She is listed as a widow, born about 1889 in Missouri. She has 2 daughters: Marie, born abt 1908, and Anna, born abt 1910. I also have the WWI draft registration for Charles Ed. Gwin.

Yes!...Marie was my grandmother! Myrtle was my great-grandma Hickey. She remarried at some point and was a widow... All of those names are in the family Bible. My mom did all of the research on the family tree, because I had a brother who was a hemophiliac (genetically passed from mother to son) and she was trying to find out where it came from. I have a really cool book that she had and filled out; it includes lots of pictures; she had tin types. My email is njdiag@aol.com...Charles Edgar Gwin was my great-grandfather.

This shows all the promise of being the father of John Paul Gwin and the great-grandfather of Jeanette Whytrock. He is a white man named Gwin who was born in Kansas, is married to a Native American and living in Creek Co., Oklahoma, a year or two before John Paul's birth.

If William H. Gwin is in fact the father of John Paul Gwin, it means that John Paul had this older sister who is Jeanette's grandaunt.

On January 21, 1920, a couple who answered the census as John Gwin, age 18, and his wife Hazel, age 16, were roomers at 108 1/2 East Hobson in Sapulpa (a suburb south of Tulsa), Creek Co., Oklahoma. His race was listed as Indian, hers as white. He had not attended school since 19 Sep 1919, but she had. Both could read, write, and speak English. His occupation was listed as battery expert, hers as none.
He reported that he and both his parents were born in Oklahoma; she and both her parents were born in Missouri.

However, on Apr. 4, 1930, a John P. Gwin, age 28, was listed as living on E. 2nd St., Tulsa, OK. He was single, Indian, a welder by trade, and a native of Oklahoma. But he listed his parents' place of birth as Kansas (father) and Oklahoma (mother).

I am looking for John Paul Gwin, b. 1901 Creek Co., OK; d. 1976, Cherokee Co., OK -- JW

Jeanette,
To my knowledge so far, your John Gwin is not a relative of mine. But I'm interested, so I looked for him in the 1920 Oklahoma census and  found the following:

On January 21, 1920, a couple who answered the census as John Gwin, age 18, and his wife Hazel, age 16, were roomers at 108 1/2 East
Hobson in Sapulpa (a suburb south of Tulsa), Creek Co., Oklahoma. His race was listed as Indian, hers as white. He had not attended school
since 19 Sep 1919, but she had. Both could read, write, and speak English. His occupation was listed as battery expert, hers as none. He and both his parents were born in Oklahoma; she and both her parents were born in Missouri.

Best to you,
In Jesus,
John  (Contact information:)

John, First I want to thank you so much for the information that you have sent. Yes this is my long lost grandfather. It has taken a very long time to find even how his name was spelled. No one in the family would give any information on him, so it has been a long search.  I am thankful to you. His mother was half Creek and half Cherokee. His father is white and born in Kansas.  Thank you, John.

Jesus is Lord,
Jeanette Whytrock

[Carol Callison Note: I'm not sure how the following people are related to this line. L to R: Elizabeth KYLE Gwin; Theodore Gwin, 65 yrs. (we have never seen a middle name for him); their daughter Julia Elizabeth GWIN Brown, 34; and her husband Jonas F. Brown. This was a big get-together at Theodore and Elizabeth's home about 1906 or 1907, going by the age of baby Gladys (b. 1906, their 5th child, whom Julia Gwin Brown is holding). Knowing the area, this had to be in a newspaper, but we have not found it yet. Many people were there.]

My name is Deena Hill; my husband Gary Benton Hill's ggg-grandparents are Horatio Jones Gwin and Lucinda Newcomb. My husband comes through Horatio's son, Thomas Newcomb Gwin and Thomas' daughter, Zella Lucinda Gwin (called "Peter" her whole life). I have a picture of her. I understand she was quite the lady! She had only one child, Iris Linscott, who married Thomas Benton Hill. Thomas and Iris had four children. John Thomas Hill was the youngest of the four. That is my husband’s father.
