[John M. Gwin Note--22 Jul 2022:

This website is just getting too big.  It appears I haven't been back to update it for seven years!
THREE THINGS:  First of all, tonight I discovered that 24.06--Minerva Weathers, above, married a John Denton, and for the last hour or so have been working on exploring that line.
Secondly, in trying to post online what I've learned, I discovered a broken link that I'm trying to fix.
And thirdly, I'm also "rediscovering" the fascinating email below that I evidently pasted here onto the page some time ago, perhaps because I was in a hurry and didn't have anyplace else to save it.  But now I can't remember who sent it!]

>> Here's my line: Joseph Tipton married 23--Jane Gwin, their son 24--Isom
>> Gwin Tipton married Mary Murr, their daughter 25--Amanda married Michael
>> Hannel, their daughter 26--Louisa May Hannel married Uriah Cephus Breeden,
>> their daughter 27--Hattie Myrtle Breeden married Isaac Orville Baker, their
>> daughter 28--Norma Alene Baker married Luther Franklin House, their son is
>> 29--Myron Wade House, born 14 June 1951 in New Albany, Indiana.
>>
>> I haven't been out on a lot of websites yet and didn't want to appear
>> ignorant, so I asked about Isom Gwin's place of ordination in case I had
>> missed it somewhere else. I have some info that might help. Here it is. He
>> was ordained to the ministry from - but not necessarily at - Providence
>> Baptist Church of Christ. The minutes read thus: "A motion maid by brother
>> Spenser Clack to tolerate brother Isom Gwin to Exercise his gift
>> wheresoever the Lord in his providence may call him. Laid over till next
>> meeting for consideration." On June 18, 1803 the minutes say "the Motion
>> maid by brother Clack for brother Gwins bounds to be inlarged Laid over at
>> brother Gwins request." On July 16, 1803 Providence appointed Isom Gwin and
>> Ebenezer Leath as delegates to the association. On 15 January 1804 these
>> minutes state: "A petition from Tuchaleechey Church for brother Isom Gwin
>> to be ordained to take the pastoral care of them it was granted if he is
>> found Sufficient when Examined before a presbytery which is to Set at the
>> fork pigeon on the first Saturday and Friday before in April." [I suppose
>> we might assume that Isom was ordained at the Forks of Pigeon in April
>> 1804.] On January 19 1805 letters of dismission were granted to Isom Gwin
>> and wife and son William Gwin by Providence Church.
>> Also, one final note. Bartholomew Co. estate records list 6 children of
>> Joseph Tipton - Sarah, Ibby, John S., Isom Gwin, Lydia, and Joanah. Sarah
>> married Jonathan Neal. Ibby married Wilson Ferguson. Lydia married Daniel
>> Babcock. Joanah married Elijah W. Crandall. Farewell for now and God bless

Hello,
I just found the Gwin site.  Amanda Tipton, granddaughter of of V. Jane Gwin Tipton Weathers, was my great-grandmother.  She married Micheal Hannel (Harrison Co., IN.), and their son Jacob Isom Hannel was my grandfather. I knew very little about Isom Gwin Tipton other than his father was Joseph Tipton from Tenn. and that he was named for his grandfather who was a pastor.  Thank you very much for publishing your research.  I will continue to enjoy it.
Sincerely,
Doris Hannel Gosnell

Hello Cousin Doris!
I'm very glad to meet you--thanks for writing.  Using your data, above, I found Amanda and Michael in 1870 with three children, the older two of whom must be his by a previous marriage, since Amanda would've only been 11 years old when Sarah was born.  I found them again in 1880 with five children and will continue the search by census soon.
John

Hello,
I will send you the information of our line in installments as I have limited computer skills.  Thank you for compliling Amanda's descendants.  My dad knew a great deal about his grandparents, and I have learned to admire them.  Amanda Tipton Hannel 15 Dec. 1849 ( Isom Gwin Tipton, and Mary Elizabeth Murr -- Mary's parents were John Murr and Catherine Hamman) died 6 Oct.1923. Amanda married Michel Hannel (perferred spelling) on 24 June 1869.  Michel was born 15 Aug 1840 in Neuwiller, Alsace, France. (parents Jacob and Sarah Kopp Hannel. He came to the United States and Harrison Co. in 1843.

Children of Amanda and Michel Hannel:  7 Feb. 1870 Martha Ann; 11 Feb. 1871 Jacob Isom; 14 Feb. 1872 Louisa May; 26 Mar. 1873 John William; 13 Feb. 1878 Emma Elizabeth; 30 June 1881 Michel Henry; 18 Aug. 1883 Charles Benjamin; 8 Oct.   1887  George Abslam
; 4 Oct. 1889 Joseph Edward     [source: family Bible]

Michel was a stone mason and farmer.  He built the stone house on the farm where he and Amanda lived in what was then Scott Twp. in Harrison Co.  Amanda was resourceful and raised sheep and flax.  She was a skilled weaver.  Ruins of the stone house and fences  still remain at the location.  Michel served in the home guard and the Union Army during the Civil War, ( Co. I, 13th Inf. Reg. IN.  Amanda and Michel were members of Mt. Solomon German Reformed Lutheran Church, founded  in 1810 in Harrison Co.  They are buried in the family plot next to Jacob and Sarah Kopp Hannel in the church cemetery.
Michel was first married to Matilda A. Brown on 8 Nov. 1860.  She died 26 Feb. 1865 and is buried in Potato Run Church Cemetery.
Children of Matilda and Michel Hannel:  22 Aug. 1861 Sarah M.; 26 Aug  1863 Mary M.
My dad was the son of Jacob Isom Hannel and Melvina Carolina Barks.  (Next installment soon)
Sincerely,
Doris Hannel Gosnell

I'm not sure if this is our Katherine.  Marion County is where Indianapolis is and much farther north than I would expect her marriage to have taken place.  The date is within where I would expect it to be, but that and her name are the only indicators that this might possibly be she.  I post this here only as one possibility.                                              --John M. Sallie Tipton was the daughter of Isom Gwin Tipton and Mary Murr, so her maiden name was Tipton.
We found records of birth of the twins--Maud & Claud--that list their father as Cornelius Grabil--but we can find no marriage records for Sallie and Cornelius.  The only marriage that we can find records of was to John Deaton--so we have no record of who was the father of the other children.]

Crawford Co., Kansas, 1878
The Crawford County News, "Reform," was first published at Girard, August 6, 1875, by T. P. Fulton and C. G. Covell. November 19, 1875. George W. Tipton was added to the firm, the style then being Tipton, Fulton & Covell. February 17, 1876, Fulton retired from the firm, and the paper thereafter became Democratic. March 19, 1876, Covell sold to H. C. Brandon, and the firm became Tipton & Brandon, and continued the paper until November 2, 1876, when J. W. Lamoreaux become a partner. Tipton sold his interest to Lamoreaux, March 22, 1877, who conducted the paper until June 21, 1877, when Tipton bought out Lamoreaux, and carried on the business for a time. September 27, 1877, Tipton resigned the editorial control to Jacob S. Moore, but resumed it again after the campaign. February 7, 1878, H. S. Kline and W. M. Clarke, as Kline & Clarke, purchased the paper, and Kline became editor. On April 1, following, Clarke sold out to Kline, and the latter continued the paper until July 20, 1878, when E. R. Ridgley purchased it, changed its politics to "National," but retained Kline as editor. September 5, 1878, Ridgley and Kline retired from the establishment, the former having sold it to R. T. Root, of Burlington, Iowa, who leased it to J. J. Hadley, of Wyandotte.

[JMG Note: I have no idea if this is our 5.08--Geo. W. Tipton or not; I found it in a Google search. The date and place could be right.]

The following table for the descendents of Isom Gwin Tipton aligns data from different sources. It is of note here that in the 1860 Indiana Census there were two different Benjamin L. Tiptons, each about age 5: one was in Clark Co. and the son of Johnathan and Elizabeth Tipton, the other in Harrison Co. and the son of Isom and Mary Tipton. Some of the following researchers, evidently not aware of this, have inadvertantly mixed the two. It is the intent of this page to report the descendants of Virginia Jane Gwin Tipton Weathers, to include the family of the latter of these Benjamin L. Tiptons.

photo of Ben Weathers taken about 1880. He said, "This is a photo of my third great-grandfather, probably taken in Crawford County, Indiana. He died in 1881 at age 93 years. Benjamin Weathers married twice: Glathy Bullington and Mrs. Jane Gwin Tipton. From this photo (held at the Filson Club, Louisville, KY) a portrait was painted showing B. W. in a coat with a string tie. When he died, a suit and shoes were purchased--that indicates to me that my ancestor did not attend church where he would have dressed up."]

Rosie's mother, Cora Melvina White, then married her first cousin, Perry Alvin Hall. I believe she didn't want to at first and did so because the times did not permit a young lady to have a child out of wedlock. She came to love him very much. Dear John

My 4x great grandmother was Virginia Jane Gwin who married Benjamin Weathers through their son Warden Weathers to his daughter Eliza Weathers, who is also buried here in Sonoma County, California, who was my 2x great grandmother who married Henry Goss in Indiana. My mother’s grandmother was their daughter Ida Grace Goss, who married Commodore Dock Rogers. My grandfather was Charles Allen Rogers the first born child of Ida and Dock. My mother was the seventh child of ten born to Charles and Annie Thompson Rogers. My mother was Jewell Joyce Rogers born 1925 in Oklahoma.

My great grandmother Ida told me that we were related some how to the Lincoln family. She also told me that when they moved from Indiana to New Mexico when she was about seven years of age that her father Henry Goss shot three wild Indians off the roof of their sod house and loaded them up in a wagon and took them to town to show them off or collect a bounty if one was available.

Thanks again for the wonderful website.

Thank you,
Dana Kitchens

Greetings, Cousin!
Glad to have you aboard! Please allow me to "take you back a ways"--at least to where we connect:

http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/gwinVAtiptonweathers.htm

Your Isom Gwin Tipton is the son of Virginia Jane Gwin and Joseph Tipton, both of the Crowson's Cove area of Sevier and Blount counties, Tennessee. Virginia's dad, Isham Gwin, is your Isom's grandfather and my own gggg-grandfather. That makes your Isom Gwin Tipton my own first cousin--four generations removed, that is! And so you and I will likely be fifth cousins or fourth-cousins-once-removed, depending on how far below Isom Gwin Tipton you are.

You probably have lots of downline info we don't have yet, so I'm really looking forward to hearing more from you on this, Tina--I love meeting "new" family!
:-)
Best to you, "new" cousin,
In Jesus,
John Gwin
